That ice cream van was a lifesaver!
My dad was a driving instructor and back in the days of proper diesels relying on compression alone he did a full lesson when the alternator belt went as the battery was only needed for ancilliaries.
I'd have been having kittens. How do you stay so bloody calm?!?
"The dashboard is black, the tyres have fallen off, the engine is on fire - it's only 8 minutes away. I'm sure I can make it" 😂
Hi Paul, I am a retired mechanic. I would drive dodgy customers cars in and sometimes they made it sometimes not. 😹 I used to rebuild automatic transmissions, so I have driven cars stuck in first, or drive them in reverse, all kinds of stupid problems. They will sort it out, easy fix really. good luck. 😸
At least they came out lol campervan up here in Unst Shetland front spring went last week they had to sit in a layby for a week RAC and AA didnt want to know
That was great Paul! The drama, the tension, the resolution - very nice. It's interesting to see what happens off the hills.
I love the way you make the best of what life offers you. What a frustrating experience, but there you are, still such a good man. ❤
Love the dedication! Bet you never would have ever considered doing a video like to this on the channel. :) Love it, ty!
You know when you're in a rush, every traffic light is on a red......
'Ull' east yorkshire.
my anxiety levels peaked on that drive! 😂 I used to drive trucks all over Europe and sometimes I’d be running on air 😱 but thankfully I always made it to a filling station, some days I honestly don’t know how! It’s a stressful experience! 👌😜😂
Had that with AA too, very annoying when you break down on a main road with good motorway links but still wait hours for a mechanic. Those call handlers must be the same ones as my doctor’s 😂 apparently if you break down on a motorway in France you need to get your vehicle off the motorway before you can be recovered.
Drove the Chevy to the Sheffy but the Chevy did die.
Loving your daily videos Paul no matter where you are. A newish sub as a newish hiker. Great channel, you’re so much more natural than most.
Many thanks
Life as it happens great stuff 🙃👍
Nightmare, but hey you got an ice cream and at least it wasnt persisting it down.
Over the years.. driven without a clutch more than once, been stuck in both 1st and 4th (ouch)..my first car (1975 Opel Kadette 1.2 coupe) I drove for 6 months with no starter motor!!
Modern cars don't like you to be able to drive round a problem! 😮
The drive belt also runs the water pump, so while the car will run a bit without the belt, coolant isn't circulating through your engine, so you can overheat rather easily and do serious engine damage. The belt's an easy repair as well, so in the future, don't drive it when it's broken. Better yet, replace the belt at the recommended interval. It's inexpensive and you could do it yourself. I've done many on my cars over the years.
Never known the aux belt drive the water pump, only ever the cam belt.
@@insoleandlaces I'm not familiar with that model, but every car I've had since 1988 has had a single serpentine belt that's driven the water pump, alternator, power steering pump and AC compressor, all driven from the crankshaft pulley.
@@scottplumer3668 Cars today are going back to timing chains, so eternally driven water pumps. Cars with timing belts generally have the timing belt power the water pump. Always change both if you are in there. 😸 P.S. They still all come with a serpentine accessory belt and power steering is now electric.
It's very common for the tbelt or chain to run the water pump
You did your best Paul with what you had and well you got an ice cream into the bargain lol . I used to drive an old mini traveler brown in colour and had to carry a small hammer with me as it would not start unless I got out lifted the bonnet and tapped the solenoid and it didn’t have any bells n whistles on either just a basic seats and doors 😂 what fun cars used to be then . Well done getting a video out nice one 👍
That's some serious dedication to continue with your 30 day challenge.
And on the bright side, 3 more days to go.
Not sure where in Shef you live? (Meresbrook here...) But if I'd known, I'd have come give you a tow. Look forward to far less breakdown videos from you soon... 🙂
At least you didn't leave home without your camera!
Had a colleague years ago who ran his car for 18 months with no starter motor parking on hills wherever he went. Started off as a necessity but ended up as a challenge to see how long he could get away with it!
Proper goodie 🎉this vid! Was shouting keep going 😂
spoke to you yesterday in the car park . apologies for asking if you were 'the man from youtube' I never expected to meet you so it really took me off guard as you could probably tell by my stuttering ahahaha
I'm just looking at your back end....😆😆😆
I think the car issue is that it's a Chevvy 😅
In ny youth I used to buy cars for pennies and tun them until they needed scrapped. Your old metro would have got there with a temp belt. Cant do that these days.
Had an alternator go on a volvo s40 so went the same as your car. Luckily they could take Ford alternators at half the price.
You find put that pre power steering cats actually had a really good system when you try to steer when the power steering goes😂
Never a dull moment in the life of a UA-camr 😃 no one can accuse you of not having dedication to the June video cause 💪
my experience as a relic that has never had a drivers permit yet alone a car in half a century^^ , was my electric fatbike going dead on the last leg of my day trip, no big deal right? Just pedal it the rest of the way, right ? Wrong .. that thing weighs 40 kg, i weigh 90 kg, the wheels are 20 inch and it moves like a turtle tank , a granny with a roller could walk faster than i was able to ride it^^ . 50 meters and i was soaked ^^
You would have been better calling the AA to begin with, rather than risk your engine driving with a broken belt.
yeah. I didn't think the 4 mile drive would cause so much trouble. Lesson learned
@@PaulMessner : I recently had to have a new clutch fitted into my car, it cost £845. I'm sure a new engine would cost a lot more. My Niece had to scrap her car when the engine siezed up as it cost too much to fix it.
Once the power steering goes, it becomes much more difficult to steer the car, thus increasing your chances of an accident. If the battery power is dying, your brake lights might not have been working, again increasing your chances of an accident.
I think you have had a lucky escape. If you had called the AA to begin with, they could have replaced the belt, charged your battery and you would have been roadworthy within an hour or so.
Remember your insurance would not pay out in the event of an accident, if you knowingly drive an unroadworthy vehicle.
Just something for you to bear in mind for the future.
Man this kicked my anxiety off 🫣😂
A day in the life. Shit happens. See you tomorrow. Good fortune with the fix. Fellow like me would fix it for you
Next weeks video, cars broken down. Head gaskets gone
Always happens at the wrong times,
Recently had a dodgy clutch and thought it would get me home until the clutch finally went when I was on the M62 just north of Huddersfield. My AA guy was also a very nice man.
Funny...you lads call it "air con". We call it AC across the pond
AA fifth emergency service… clearly after ice cream vans.
Is that the auxiliary belt? I remember that happened to my car, had to get towed with no power steering, no aircon, no radio, windows up etc no fun
Had this happen on the drive home from north wales the other year, not fun
👋🏼
What happed to the landy.. you went over to Crysler from landrover🤦♂️. Still, got the video out, thats the main thing. Onwards and upwards Paul👍
Landy is my car. Chevy is Jo's
Forty years ago I had a classic Mini estate with some interesting habits. Best not tell now but when you’re nineteen nothing scares you 🤣
A well earned beer indeed!
Yip been there marra...timing chain went on the A1 weatherby.. its a killer mate
Hi Paul hope it gets fixed ok
Plans,Gods, and lots of giggles 😂😂😂..
As a fellow dodgy car expert I feel your pain 😂
Sh1t happens Paul, glad you made it both ways and hope the Audi specialist is reasonable.
That dash was lit up like a Xmas tree 🎄
I feel your pain paul happen to me last Xmas....
Well, life gives you lemons make a …………. Great video ( forgot to add )
My stress level’s 😂😂
TWO flakes!!! 👍🏻🤗❤️😁🍦
What a day you had😢
Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans. John Lennon.
Never ever use the AA again, utterly useless a day and a half we waited and still never rescued us we had to sort it ourselves.😢😮
Must be making proper UA-cam money to have two flakes 💰💰💰😊
👍👍👍😳
😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
Surprised they didn't charge you for a call out for an existing fault. I'm afraid for me this is akin to going in the hills in trainers and then expecting to be rescued when you turn an ankle.
AAy that’s no fun. When you breakdown time seems to go extremely slow. Five minutes feels like an hour. ! To be fair, you can’t beat dodgy motors you can normally fix them
Paul, Messner reinvent his channel: it’s not about camping, it’s not about backpacking, it’s not about gear - - it’s about life and real stuff like driving, cooking, and being human.
When you’re young, life is all about “dodgy cars“. Having a car breakdown when you’re older, at least for me, like reliving your youth.
Worse things happen at sea. As my grandad used to say . I think it means you were lucky.
POS car anyway…🤣
What a stupid thing to do and ruin your car cooking engine and drive in a dangerous condition, great thing to advertise to your followers.
yeah. I didn't think the 4 mile drive would cause so much trouble. The mechanic was originally going to drive it so I thought I'd take a chance Lesson learned
