  • Steve Draper shows how to set up your machine for horizontal boring operations. This setup did not mention the Mark 4 because the bench tubes are too short to have the main table and the fixed extension table mounted as shown. On the Mark 4, the fixed extension table is not used for horizontal boring, only the main table.

Thank you for these videos. Shop smith needs more spotlight in the wood working world.

Nice job, Stephen. The only tip I would add is at 3:00 when you position the fence, you want to have the edge of the stock overhanging the edge of the table just a tad, so that the dust created from drilling will fall to the floor rather than building up on the table, where it might throw off the drilling by getting under the stock. Thank you for the input. I have recently posted another video that expands on your video regarding the flex in the table that occurs doing horizontal boring. I show specifically how to deal with the issue of the fence movement. I show how to do it without clamps. It is called "Stop Using C-clamps on Your Shopsmith Fence"

@@StephenADraper Thanks, Stephen. I saw that video and just as I said, my advice would be to have the stock overhang the table so you don’t get an error caused by dust under the wood being drilled.
