We sing at least 3songs every graduation: (*does not apply to everyone)
    1. A song for ourselves the students who work hard to graduate and to our future
    2. A song for our parents/ guardian who took care of us and with us along our journey
    3. A song to the teachers and the school for teaching us and letting us graduate

Bro.. I've recently just discovered collective singing in school events and occasions/gatherings aren't a worldwide thing apparently. Idk why and how this is normalized in Philippines, as someone who's out of tune, this puts my mind at peace. It's alright if you can't sing (note to self). We also sang MAPA in our graduation 🥹 It's like an anthem

  • @crischansan
    @crischansan 2 місяці тому +304

SB19's MAPA is a play on words. "Mapa" is "map" in English but the song "MAPA" also talks about "Ma" & "Pa" (Mom & Dad), hence the title "MaPa".
Graduation in the Philippines is also a perfect time to express appreciation to parents or guardians for sending them to school and taking care of them until they can stand on their own (graduating). This theme of giving back is evident in the song "MAPA" with the line, "...pahinga muna, ako na'ng bahala" ("...rest for now, let me do it"'). It implies that as we become adults, we will take care of our aging parents, just as they supported and cared for us back when we're kids.

Hahaha.. 😂 The first time I got this reaction from Herrera's siblings, I was shocked because I thought singing in graduation ceremonies was normal all around the world. Like, from my entire life, this is all I know. We sang songs for our graduation ceremonies. Usually some songs may also be included depending on the institution. Generally, you can expect around three to five formal singing segments during the ceremony.
Prayer Song: Sometimes it was performed by the students or the grad celebrants, or just a song lyrics from the big screen. Sometimes it was just a formal prayer, not a song.
National Anthem-usually performed at the beginning after prayer.
Provincial/or City Hymn-sung at the start.
Farewell Song-often a graduation theme. In the middle/end of the program
University Hymn after the Graduation Theme song.
And additional if they will add a tribute for their parent's song. And maybe an icebreaker from boredom of the program, a sample from a popular student singer from their school. 😅 But the flow of the program depends on the universities's plans.

So..in the Philippines the mentality of most students, parents and educators is that having an education is a privilege. Teaching, is an important job. That's why at every graduation, the teachers and students work together to create a performance whether big or small to thank the parents, member of the family, friends or anyone who supported any student to reach their goal of graduating. As you can see as simple as singing is greatly appreciated by soo many. Most of these schools have no funding from the government however, the community make the effort to support the teachers and students to be successful. I'm glad you too the time to appreciate such videos to see the ture hearts of filipinos

SB19's MAPA song sung here by the graduates tells of the very culture here in the Philippines where it is ingrained in the youth the vow that when they graduate and are stable enough, they would take care of their parents' as much as the latter had supported them reach their life goals especially to at least finish college. "Ma' stands for Mother and 'Pa' for Father, thus the title MAPA; the gist of the song is a grateful son/daughter's message to the parents saying, "Mom,Dad, you may relax, let me now be in charge of everything, It's my turn to give back the sacrifices you gave me to have me come this far.' MAPA is a song of HOMAGE TO PARENTS FROM A GRATEFUL CHILD.

It’s the graduates entertaining their parents. The SB19 song MAPA is really contraction the words Mother Father (MAMA PAPA). More like a tribute to the parents.

I'm 37 yrs old and I still remember our graduation song in elementary (one friend) and in Highschool (Next in Line). Everytime I hear these songs I remember my classmates, teachers, friends, waiter in school cafeteria, security guards, librarian and all people back in that time 😊. We have graduation songs dedicated to our parents or guardians, teachers, classmates and for all the people who came that day to celebrate with us.

🇵🇭 😄 During my time in our high school graduation more than a decade ago, we didn't do any choreography or the likes of arm and hand gestures, changing our body positions or orientations (or which way we're facing), using the lights from our phones or the like, nor whatnot else that are the same or similar to those, etc. for our songs in our high school graduation day.
We just sang our songs in our high school graduation day, and if I can still remember them well, we sang a lot of songs: one is a doxology song or a universal prayer song, one is our batch or class graduation song and/or farewell song, and one is our batch or class graduation thanksgiving and gratitude song and/or journey song (I just don't remember well anymore what are the exact songs and song titles we sang and what they're genres and purposes are for our graduation), and those doesn't even include the singing of the Philippine national anthem, our official local city hymn, and our school hymn (My high school is in a highly urbanized city here in the Philippines, which also means that our city is an independent city, so we don't have the need to sing a separate official local provincial hymn, and our high school is not directly under the Department of Education in the Philippines, so we also don't have the need to sing a separate official local regional hymn and a separate official local schools division hymn.).
Our school even have, requested and/or hired a pianist who is also a choir or chorale conductor and a vocal coach, instructor or teacher (who is also the pianist and choir or chorale conductor of our state college's choir or chorale for our school activities, holidays, occasions, observances, festivals, programs, and most especially for our Roman Catholic Christian Eucharist masses and church services held in our state college every first Friday of every month) to teach us the songs and on how to sing them during our graduation day practices and rehearsals that are held every afternoon to late afternoon after our class hours for weeks before our graduation day.
I am personally an outcast among most Filipinos, because I am tone deaf and not even good enough in singing, and not even a little bit good enough in my honest opinion, although I like, love, enjoy, value and appreciate music a lot, and I like to hum and sing a lot only and most especially when I'm at home, and especially when I'm all alone, when I wash the dishes, take a shower or bath, or when I'm doing some other household chores or other leisure or recreational activities at home, so I also enjoyed the singing parts in our graduation day.
By the way, I attended and graduated in and from a laboratory high school of or affiliated to the College of Education and Liberal Arts, serving as the college's laboratory school, that is of, under or within a public higher educational institution (specifically a local or regional state college) here in the Philippines.

Just imagine how much more impressive it would be to witness how Filipinos celebrate our festivities, especially with street dance competitions that highlight our cultural dances. You will be truly captivated not only by the artistry on display but also by the vibrant colors that fill the air. The sense of unity and pride in being Filipino truly embodies the essence of the celebration.

In the Philippines, graduations are always a big celebrations for us. We wear formal attires under a toga. Mostly white togas for high schools and blacks for universities. I remembered when I graduated nursing here in Montreal, majority of the graduates wore casuals, a few wore short and jeans. There was one guy who did a tumbling on stage, after receiving his diploma, and many were laughing. I was very astounded watching him.

We had our graduation scheduled at night. We were singing "Somewhere only we know" all the electricity were suddenly cut off, and everyone just started singing in acapella and brought their phones out and started waving them with their flashlights on. It was so beautiful, I cried a lot with my friends that night. (Yes like the flashlight song by jessie j vibes)
