I haven’t had a voice touch me like this since Karen Carpenter. She brings tears every time when she sings this. And Black Holes also. I love these girls!
Pau has a beautiful voice that can make you feel what she is singing. Dany and Ale sound spectacular singing backup on this song. This band is just full of surprises.
The background crackling is supposed to indicate that this happening at a campfire. Pau sings here - a ghost back from the dead to excoriate the guy for doing something nefarious. That guy answers by looking for someone to blame. Another TW song that use call and response.
@@MrsRealistic It would fit a certain kind of movie scene so well. Maybe the denoument of a story about a very bad 'boy' who's past catches up with him in the end.
My friend promises to play this one next time we are camping in Death Valley. It's basically a ghost story, so it will go along with huddling around a camp fire quite well. Pau's voice has so much raw emotion, I get chills every time I hear this song. She also did a piano cover a few years ago of Radiohead's Creep that like Revenant puts more than a few tears in my eyes.
Yeah they Radiohead cover was phenomenal also considering she did it in an afternoon right? They all are generational talents so blessed I lived long enough to hear them. My dear departed brother would have loved them also
It was also the first time I've heard "The Warning" on an acoustic song so far. Wow, I knew her vocal abilities but in this song I appreciated her beautiful and crystal clear voice even more. I'm immediately going to add this song to my acoustic playlist, like a little treasure just for me 😊, well I'll share it 🙏. Thank you once again, I wish you all the best from across the ocean 👋✌️
You can watch it live from the Teatro Metropolitan Theater show with a guitarist who has same last name as them so they call him cousin but he's not may have been Dany's guitar teacher he's in a Mexican band that's very popular.
Pau is very good at putting emotion into her vocals. Just a beautiful song. From the 3rd album, Error. "Breathe" from this album has even more emotion, and is very personal to Pau. Please check out the live version of "Revenant" ,from Teatro Metropolitan CDMX 2022. Nothing lost in that. The sisters, and a guest, are sitting on stools out front for this song. They don't play this song often because of the need for a 2nd guitar.
It’s believed by many that Pau is singing to the perpetrator of her character’s murder, dear boy, as a Revenant. Some speculate that the campfire noise may be indicative of how dear boy tried to hide the crime? She’s “haunting” him trying to convince him that he needs to come to terms with what he did and face justice. He responds by trying to absolve himself of his crime and looking for someone else to blame for his actions. Pau states she went through a semi-goth/emo phase in her early teens so the religious symbolism almost makes sense. She often writes parts of songs and leaves them to sit for years before she ever brings them to her sisters. This is the song, it’s been acoustic since its inception. They have done acoustic versions of 4 songs from QOTMS but they were recorded “normally” first. Pau also often claims that fan interpretations of meanings of songs are often deeper than she ever intended when they were created so who knows. The choice of the term Revenant as song title was definitely intentional but I don’t believe she has ever discussed in great detail about whether or not it had more to do with folklore or religious upbringing or a combination of both.
This is all exactly spot on as far as representing our collective understanding (and lack thereof) of the song; It's left to interpretation. The nature of the song as a lament and it's haunting qualities for me make the song more accusatory than forgiving. The Revenant is observing, and not kindly, a bad person who will never be free of what they've done, not even if they wash their hands and wash their feet. Time will catch up with them if nobody else does. If any of you have played The Witcher games, it reminds me of a NoonWraith, stuck to a place where a great wrong has occurred until that wrong is righted.
@@Biomirth The Warning - The Witcher - interesting association here. I'll look out for that next time Witcher is loaded back on the X-Box (there are many more game purchases than fit on the 1 TB XHDD)
Thanks for the reaction! Absolutely right; they can not write a bad song and yes, there are other version of this song, at Teatro Metropolitan with guest is great. Looking forward to the next one.
Studio version makes water fall from my eyes... (this song) Live at Teatro Metropolitan is an Amazing watch !! (they nailed it) only 1 extra stringed instrument as a guest and it is incredible
This was written before Taylor Hawkins death. The Warning opened for them… the last show he played. I think of him every time I hear the second verse. 😔🕊❤️
I see this song as someone returning to someone's life after a long absence. The protagonist knowing that the person has committed some heinous crime, she's pleading for an excuse or alibi but knows that one doesn't exist. I really enjoy their studio versions on all their songs. It's like we get two different versions between live and studio. Great review of a great song...:)
Thanks for the reaction! No worries about butchering my name. I'm kinda used to it at this point 😄And I understand that non-czech speaking people won't know how to pronounce it. Anyway, there are several reasons why this is my favourite TW song. First of it's the guitar riff and the vocal melody, it's simply just beautiful. Then you have the background vocals by Dany and Ale doing just simple aaaaa's. And then of course you have the amazing vocal performance by Pau and the touching lyrics. And the ending, where she just humms the melody, is just the cherry on top. This song is simply a songwriting masterpice in every detail, including the crackling of the fire. There is a video from a soundcheck, where Dany tries to sing the entire song, but at the end she says "This song is not for my voice." They do have a few other acoustic songs, like Crimson Queen (which is another one of my favourites) or Black Holes. Highly recommend checking out those too.
Awesome. Thanks for doing the studio version as well it always gets overlooked but it has those fantastic timpani/cymbal rolls that get left out of the lives. Yes, as always they leave the meaning up to the listener. I don’t know that they’ve ever shared Pau’s idea behind it publicly (outside of Patreon). Yes, the story of the resurrection fits. (They also have a song ‘Rivers Soul’ that sounds very much like an adult baptism story). For me I see this one as the spirit/revenant (“melody without a song” spirit without a body?) of “dear boys” wife/girlfriend returning to haunt/take revenge. “You can forgive, you can move on but we cannot escape the tide” (judgement day comes for us all). I have a fantastic music video fully produced in my mind😂
yes indeed, awesome!!, i can agree with most, you really should watch this one live at the teatro, shot it straight to my top 5, like sitting around a campfire with TW, thanks for sharing!!!
There is a movie from a few years ago called The Revenant. i wouldn’t be surprised if Pau wasn’t inspired by it to compose this song. The lyrics follow the plot of the movie rather well. The movie based on a true story from the 19th Century when a company of trappers were working in the wilds of America during a cold winter and they were attacked my a bear. One of them was severely injured and had lost a lot of blood, so the others in the company left him for dead, even burying him in a shallow grave. But, miraculously, the guy survived. And he meticulous tracked down each of the others to get revenge. Could be the origin of the idea. IDK. I would suggest you check out the live version of this at Teatro Metropolitan from 2022. They only ever played the song with a guest guitarist to accompany Dany on stage with Ale on bass and Pau doing the lead vocals. Besides the Teatro show, there are a couple of fan cams around of them doing the song on tour in California with a member of their road crew playing the extra guitar parts. He had been added to the crew after their tour with Halestorm. I think he was a guitarist for The Pretty Reckless and I think he was catching I ride home with The Warning and doing roadie work to pay them back.
When they played in Monterey, Ca. in 2022, I felt so lucky that they played it that night in front of 100 people at the Golden State Theatre. I'll cherish that forever.
This is one of the only songs that I’m aware of where they (Pau) haven’t really explained what it is about from their point of view - perhaps the point was to leave it up to the listener’s imagination. The live performance from Teatro Metropolitan is definitely worth a watch. 👍😎
Pau's voice is haunting and emotional. She is the main songwriter and is extremely talented. The lyrics are open to interpretation and I like to use the lyrics as a great description for the evil autocrat leaders around the world. Would love to hear this live.
This song is one of the gems in the Error album. My top 3. It’s quite ironic that the title of the album is Error when the whole album is quite the opposite of it. I still think it’s their best album to date and an instant classic in my book. Each track is relevant, thought provoking, ‘poetic’, and musically on point. Just great songwriting. And Revenant is definitely one of the best in their whole catalog/discography. And of course Pau conveys the emotion perfectly.
Yeah, they don't write bad songs. Have you heard Eternal Love yet. It is, imho, their only C&W song. Written when they were kids, I think any country singer could make it a solid hit today. Ale's bass lines always amaze me.
This is perhaps my favourite song they have done until Consume came out but they’re too close to separate! The best performance of this is from Teatro Metropolitan beyond any shadow of a doubt; live is always sprinkled with their magic!
Hey Mommy Listic. This Is One Of Those Ms. PUH PAU Songs Were She Can Just Rip Your Heart Out Through Your Soul Songs. I Admit The Dear Boy Throghout The Song Is My Daughter Talking To Her Old Man. This Tune Gets Me Every Time !! Paulina Is PUH PAU !!!
A beautiful song that took me totally by surprise as I was listening through my first copy of their ERROR album. Like other ballads sung by Pau, it always leaves me in tears. Watching her sing this at Teatro Metropólitan CDMX tears me up. I think this song has religious overtones but that it's probably about a toxic ex who the singer worshipped (perhaps as a "good Catholic" would worship Jesus), and although they've split, she can't get him or the hurt out of her mind. The Warning have a few songs that follow the theme of being in a toxic relationship but unable to stop loving the object of their affection.
If Pau weren't such an incredible drummer, she could front a band full time on lead vocals. Her raspy vibrato shakes my soul. I don't think this is about Jesus Christ. I think it is about some lost soul who is wanted by vigilantes for a drug deal gone bad, or for some other heinous or nefarious act. He's as good as dead, probably knows it, and his mom or significant other is scolding him scornfully and mournfully at the same time. The crackling is supposed to be a campfire. Check out the Teatro Met 08/29/2022 version of this if you can. It's AMAZING live.
*Revenant* a REVENANT is "one that returns after death or a long absence"... this song by DPA/TW is the 12th one on their "ERROR" album, their 3rd since they became a band 10 years ago... to me, this song appears to be about loss, heartbreak, and pain... they have a few songs of similar theme... in this one, the protagonist seems to want to say goodby to the past after some sort of breakup or possibly a death... they are trying to come to terms with what happened and are seeking the truth about what transpired... going by the definition of REVENANT, maybe that one who has been gone is returning or has returned and maybe there is some hope for reconciliation of sorts? TWA ⚡🤘😸🤘⚡ TWA
Nice song pick. Hauntingly familiar melody and lyrics - I would like to think it's a Warning original, I'm sure I've heard live versions they've done. It's nothing to do with the namesake movie (underwhelmed by that) - the rolling Japanese type characters bring back associations of The Matrix to me. Wouldn't it have been awesome if their lyrics had dropped raindrop style like this down the screen.
That would have fit with the matrix theme for sure! I saw the movie, Revenant (apparently based on a true story) and it was definitely a bit of a stretch.
It is definitely a TW original. By the time they wrote Revenant they had been writing songs for five or six years already and had long since decided this is what they want to do professionally.
I personally enjoy Dany's vocal style and sound more, but that's not a knock on Pau by any means. Her lead tracks add a dimension to The Warning overall, and she has an excellent voice. "Revenant" ranks among my favorite TW songs, and her vocals hit me not far off from Dany performing "Crimson Queen". Not saying that it's by a wide margin, as Pau has solid performances on ""Narcisista", "Sharks", "Black Holes" and others, but "Revenant" is my favorite.
I always thought the song was a nod to season 7 of The Simpsons when Krusty the Clown dies, but returns later having faked his death to avoid paying the IRS. Kidding!
Read about several different interpretations of the song but none were overtly religious. More so, Pau writes about social issues like addiction and things of that nature. I have never perceived that the family is very religious, beyond being in a very Catholic nation, which is a much lesser level of religious intensity than that of American Protestant religiousness. Anyways, one of the more in depth explanation: “The song 'REVENANT' by The Warning delves into themes of accountability, the inevitability of consequences, and the search for redemption or escape. The lyrics address a 'dear boy,' suggesting a narrative where someone is on the run, possibly from their past actions or from others who are seeking retribution. The repeated requests to 'find me someone to blame' and 'find me somewhere to aim' indicate a desperate search for scapegoats or direction in the midst of chaos and confusion. The phrase 'a melody without a song' metaphorically represents a sense of incompleteness or a life without purpose or clear moral guidance. The Warning, known for their rock sound and introspective lyrics, often explore complex emotional landscapes. In 'REVENANT,' they touch upon the human tendency to wash one's hands of responsibility, as seen in the biblical allusion to 'wash your hands and wash your feet, walk on water,' which could reference Pontius Pilate's act of washing his hands to signify his refusal to take responsibility for Jesus' fate. This act of cleansing is juxtaposed with the impossibility of truly escaping the consequences of one's actions, as the 'cruel mistress keeping time' suggests that time itself bears witness to all deeds, and one cannot simply erase the past. The song's title, 'REVENANT,' which means someone who has returned, especially supposedly from the dead, adds another layer to the narrative. It could imply that the past one is trying to escape from is hauntingly persistent, much like a revenant that refuses to stay buried. The song's haunting melody and evocative lyrics create a powerful message about facing the repercussions of one's actions and the futility of running from the past.”
❤😊 Hi Mrs. Realistic the LIVE version at Teatro Metropolitan is 200% better than this not that this version isn't grate, but in LIVE versionPaulina's Voice is something that lives you speechless also her sisters backup vocals, I hope you have a beautiful evening, and also looking at her expressions and hearing a more deep tone of voice..
I can’t speak for The Warning, and as far as I know they haven’t explained what the song is about. But though they were raised Catholic, by what seem like reasonably strict (or maybe more accurately, protective) parents, I don’t think the song has to do with Jesus. To the extent they’ve discussed their interests and the subject matter of their songs, it has had more to do with social concerns (like the consequences of social media) and personal relationships, not religion. But who knows.
Why would they or you choose the lyric video of this when it was professional recorded live and done with a special guest at Teatro . The only live performance of this song ever
The live version at Teatro Metropolitan is pure magic

He's as good as dead, probably knows it, and his mom or significant other is scolding him scornfully and mournfully at the same time. The crackling is supposed to be a campfire.
Check out the Teatro Met 08/29/2022 version of this if you can. It's AMAZING live.

Call me crazy, and that's OK, but this song should rank up there with Yesterday by the Beatles. Immensely talented young ladies!
I'm sure their music will go down in history just as their music has!
I agree and I’m 66 so I caught the Beatles act so to speak. The Warning is a deeper study

*Revenant*
a REVENANT is "one that returns after death or a long absence"... this song by DPA/TW is the 12th one on their "ERROR" album, their 3rd since they became a band 10 years ago... to me, this song appears to be about loss, heartbreak, and pain... they have a few songs of similar theme... in this one, the protagonist seems to want to say goodby to the past after some sort of breakup or possibly a death... they are trying to come to terms with what happened and are seeking the truth about what transpired... going by the definition of REVENANT, maybe that one who has been gone is returning or has returned and maybe there is some hope for reconciliation of sorts?

Great take!
I also believe that this version of this song is the best. They did it at Teatro and it was beautiful but, as you said, some of the nuance was lost.
I think it's only the second time I've seen Pau take lead on vocals!
I always thought the song was a nod to season 7 of The Simpsons when Krusty the Clown dies, but returns later having faked his death to avoid paying the IRS. Kidding!

😍
Oh yes it's definitely a nod to the conservative religious culture they were raised in even if it is a story about non-biblical characters.
The “Teatro Metropolitan” version live was much more enjoyable.
Anyways, one of the more in depth explanation:
“The song 'REVENANT' by The Warning delves into themes of accountability, the inevitability of consequences, and the search for redemption or escape.
I have heard that this is about the lone wolf school shooters like the one at Uvalde Texas.
That’s been a favorite of mine for a while. My only real criticism of the new album is that I don’t think Pau sings lead on any of it.

Strange request, when Teatro is available.

This is the live version from The Teatro Metropolitan 2022
Thank you! I'll check it out!
I always think that the ability of a rock band to do lighter, acoustic songs is a measure of their talent and musicality. A clear pass here.
