The movie and series are both based on the comic; The series is animated, but it's voiced by the same actors that are in the movie. Scott's problem is essentially a "failure to launch," having reached adulthood but hesitant to grow up. He was dating Knives for a combination of two things: Both somewhat safe (young, relationship wouldn't get "grown up serious", etc.) and hero worship on her part ("I've never dated someone so talented!"). That, of course, blew up in his face for all the reasons you saw. Allison Pill (Kim) is a highly underrated actress; She's in Season 7 of _American Horror Story_ and the HBO series _The Newsroom,_ both worth watching.
