I have six birds. All are from rehoming or abuse. I just got a 45 year old female yellow and blue Macaw. She was used for breeding. She makes the biggest mess. The vet bill is enormous. She was in bad health when I got her. I have had xrays and blood work done. SHe has bad feet. So she is now on meds for the rest of her life. I feel like a run a daycare some days. I LOVE THEM!! GOD I DO!! But please do you're homework before getting any animal. MAKE SURE YOU CAN AFFORD GOOD!! AND PROPER NUTRITION AND VET CARE!! I can not stress this enough

That bite at 6:17 is what I deal with daily. Ours is an 8 year old Harliquin Macaw. Like yours, she can be sweet and funny, then turns on a dime and that can opener of a mouth clamps down. Good video.🦜👍

I really appreciate your honesty and trying to discourage people from impulse buying the gorgeous animals. I do not have a bird currently because my cockatiel passed away suddenly. I have often considered a bigger bird, but of all the videos I watch, it would not be fair to a bird, and I will not do it. Thank you!

I have 3 parrots (a Major Mitchell’s cockatoo, a galah, and a gold capped conure). Each one is different. The Major Mitchell’s is incredibly destructive while the other two aren’t. The galah has horrid mood swings while the Major is always grumpy and the conure is usually happy. All of them are expensive (probably about $250 a month for all of them), but the Major’s destructiveness is the most expensive part. She goes through toys DAILY and destroys furniture whenever she can which gets expensive. As for time and space, both of my parents work from home. Our cockatoos are in macaw sized cages in my mom’s office most of the day, but come out in the afternoon until bed time. The conure lives in a cockatoo sized cage in my room. I’m keeping these birds no matter what. My parents agreed to take care of them while I’m in college if I pay for their expenses. I’ve had the conure since I was 8 years old (I’m 19 now). I’ve always bought the food, cleaned the cages and bowls, payed for vet visits, and made the toys for him, and it’s been a lot of responsibility.
I agree with this video. Birds are hard. Don’t get them as a pet. You don’t add birds to your life, you form a new life around your birds. In many ways, you have to change your lifestyle more dramatically for birds than you do for kids. You need to baby proof your house from the floors to the ceilings, phase out things like microwave popcorn bags, no stick pans, and self cleaning ovens (Teflon is incredibly toxic to birds in even the lowest amounts). There are lots of household cleaners that aren’t safe to use anymore. There are foods you can’t eat anymore if you have your birds out while you eat, like garlic (which can cause ulcers in the crop). You have to learn habits like turning of the ceiling fans before entering a room. Forget sleeping in or staying up late. Either one will result in upset and grumpy birds. Birds are incredibly hard work but also incredibly rewarding.

I love how every person that has actually owned a parrot knows deep down they make terrible pets. I see comments on videos of people trying to sell baby birds saying something like, they are so quiet and loving. They are easy maintenance. It's a little scary for the parrots. People like the novelty and think they will make a good social accessory and when they realize other people get over it in less then an hour and they have no one else to show they stop taking them out, get tired of their noise to get out. Then give them away to a shelter. It is not anything wrong with accepting that it is too much to handle, but I really wish people could realize that before by volenteering at a shelter for a few months. And if you don't have time to do this, that is a really good indication you don't have time to take care of one of these guys.

I share my life with a Hahn's Macaw (I do not like the word 'own' - because I don't own her) and I swear, she knows she's a macaw, just doesn't know she's small... and all the things you've mentioned apply to her too - and possibly to any bird. If you're planning to do further videos - please include noise. I don't think many people realise how much noise birds make. I feel I'm quite lucky as my neighbours have kids who are louder than my birds 😄

    • @ShelbyTheMacaw

macaws make noise during the day time, if your neighbour is complaining about noise of your bird it means that they are unemployed or pensioners and in either case their opinion is worth of nothing. literally, the happiness of a macaw is valued in this society higher than the unemployed person. you being a privilidged asshole have not realized this, but it is a fact nevertheless.

      @Bullen_3 Місяць тому

Even if you do have a bird that wants to cuddle all the time,it needs to be kept to a complete minimum. It can cause hormonal reactions and that can lead to an over dependent over aggressive bird that hates everyone but the one person. That can get real possessive and if that happens, people get bit real hard. ER room hard. I can't stress the importance of proper handling.. Be observant of feather arrangements, ask permission of your bird like if you want him or her to step up etc.., don't over cuddle and no beak wrestling,no stroking any place other then the head.
I just don't think too many people can handle this. And from what ive sent the cuddling thing is a real issue..
You probably know all this, but I write this for the benefit of others. Sorry if I'm preaching..

Great to hear the reality. I have 7 smaller birds and it's work, then home cleaning all the time. As you get older, as the birds live a long time it's harder. You have to be a certain type of person. A macaw must be unbelievable to clean up after and the cost. Mine cost a fortune at the vet and for toys. Thanks for the truth.❤

I've had the pleasure to volunteer at a bird rescue in past and too be a foster family to birds that needed extra attention (behavior issues) like the very peach colored, moluccan cockatoo, Sammy..he screamed incessantly if he was left alone ( you could be in the same area with him but if he could not see you, he was alone)..but made up for every screaching minute with his neck nuzzles, happy clicks and lingoring layer of Sammy Dust! Or Dolly, another Moluccan Cockatoo whom, out of the blue, had taken to biting her "persons" husband and then her person. the husband was Missing an earlobe and Dolly bit off a chunk of her persons cheek before she ended up with me..the only thing she ever put a hole in was my shirts, after she climbed inside to nuzzle me and happily click herself to sleep...often whispering "nightnight" repeatedly. Such amazing graceful and animals but they are wild animals that have the ability to inflict incredible amounts of harm with those beaks.
Oh and the not-so-small fortune you spend on specially-made bird toys for them to destroy within seconds🤣
I would give anything to be back in that time with those birds in my life again thank you so much for sharing the life that you have with your amazing animals

Teach the parrot to go to where you blow a whistle in case it gets lost among the trees, etc. And whenever he comes to the sound of the whistle, give him a pleasant meal. The birds, when they do not see each other, locate each other with loud whistles. If they get lost, it is an easy way to locate them and their owners.

When I initially saw your set up video I was like "yikes" when I saw your cage. However it was well after the fact and with everything else you were doing I knew you would figure it out 😊. I have had birds my entire life but I way underestimated 2 things when I got a macaw (and I did research for years). I underestimated the mess. 20 smaller birds don't make the mess of one macaw 😂. I also underestimated how much she would eat. Again, I had multiple birds and pound for pound my macaw eats WAY more than I would have imagined. Respect the beak! I was really worried for your face 🦜

@@ShelbyTheMacaw NO because I was catching up on your videos so you probably already had updated it. Then I saw you feed her in the cage and thought "should I tell her that birds like to eat with their flock?" I think sometimes the avian community can be quite judgemental and I didn't want to come across that way at all. I may have my own opinions but my way isn't the only way. I see how committed to Shelby you all are and know that you do the best for her. Sometimes practical experience is necessary and you are doing a great job with her and accepting we all make mistakes and adjusting as you go. Good job Shelby family 🤗

Abousolty agree . scarlet my Macaw is over a year old .and love her to bits .
And yes in the beginning nearly recked my house. But I quickly made a big out door enclosure for her .and she is free flying in my garden few hours. Made friends with the seagulls..they leave her alone and will warn if hawks around and chase them a way.
She then indoor to her cage for sleep.

  • @robertcook3961
    @robertcook3961 16 днів тому

I partly with you comments. If you are interested in a macaw, step one find a cage. This is a very big problem finding one that is large enough. Macaws have a 36 inch wingspan, so the cage has to be larger than this in all directions. Finding a cage 40-42 inches deep is very difficult and very expensive. (I made my B&G macaw's cage. I would also recommend a stainless steel cage.) Once you find a cage, step two, find the beneficiary for the bird for when you die, and write it into your will. If you take care of your bird, the ARE going to outlive you. Step three, do your research on what kid of bird you want. If you are a current parrot owner with experience, they you might have the knowledge to acquire most any type of bird legal for your area. If your are totally inexperienced, then look for a smaller bird. After you have completed the above, then find the area in your home which you are about to turn into an aviary. Birds beaks and nails grow continuously. As birds forage and chew, they were down the beak. So plan to keep plenty of wood handy for chewing. Anything you do not want chewed on, cover it with plexiglass. And last but by no means the least, this new bird is you child. Macaw have the intelligence of a seven year old. they are very inquisitive and remember everything. You need to treat them as your own child that will be with you for the rest of your life. They will and do eat almost anything and everything you will eat, so be sure to include them at meal times, they are social eaters. Do your research on what you cannot give them and you can cut your bird food bill in half.

I had a Harliquin for 22 years, who I hand raised, and an African grey who was 15. I rehomed them about 5 years ago to our Bird Man rehabber. I couldn’t deal with being bitten all the time anymore.
Don’t let them fly in the open! That’s so dangerous! They could fly away or if a bird of prey swept down on them.

You will get bit but the bird would have to bite you with all of its force to do any serious damage, and most all nips youd get from casual owning wont be like that. Ive had my macaw for 4 years now, at first I did get bit a lot but as ive had him ive learned the body language and know how to not get bit, plus he also has learned not to bite so much, so I dont worry about biting as an everyday risk it rarely happens. i would say in the past year I have gotten a few random unexpected bites but like i said a parrot bite has the potential to be bad but youd have to really be pissing it off so dont worry about going to the hospital with one but also accept the fact that owning one you 100% will be bit at some point so just know you will have an occasional pinched probably bleeding cut finger that will heal in a couple days.

My GW doesn't bite too often, but when she's hormonal she can be dangerous. It's really important to learn to read their body language, and to be constantly aware of everything; their mood, your mood, triggers in the environment, etc. She's a real cuddle bug, but that doesn't mean I can forget--for an instant--that she is only 2 generations out of the wild. I haven't gotten a real bite (or even a painful nip) for a long time but if I go back 20 or so years I had a couple that sent me to the ER. The lady who hatched her was quite a macaw person and wisely said you have to be willing to take some bites.

@@emmaudo4185 sorry but I have to disagree. A GW doesn't have to bite with all their force to cause injury. My girl whittles oak chunks for fun and pops open Brazil nuts in a matter of seconds. And even a "good bird" can deliver some bad bites at times.

Cook was my 1st he was my grandparents bird, clipped for 40 years wild caught chick, who I flew till the day he died in my 20s he was 62 qnd flew the day he died. But hay we can't control ppls assumptions. We call bigbie goosey but often call him goosifer as in Lucifer, I looked at birdtricks comments n omg some of the questions were mind blowing..I am financially struggling because every red cent goes on my birds.but there worth it.

But...I think it depends on the owner too, bc, I've seen this parrots with a big variety of personalities, nd maybe it depends on the professionalism of the owner, bc this animals need to be trained, educated in some sort of way, not like a dog, but u can make them be more obedient and less anxious, loud and destructive, I had 2 love birds time ago when I was younger, my first love bird(me without experience with parrots nd with 11 years old yeap) was a completely horror, he was loud, aggressive, destructive, crazy, non obedient, and that's bc I made him like that, by playing with him in a agresive(no abuse or shit like that, just playing rough) way, by letting him be, nd not knowing what to do, then I have another one(me with 16 years old) that I also feed him from baby, nd this time, the same bird, was completely different from the other one, this one was sweet, chill, sometimes loud but not that screamy, he was obedient and nice with me and the rest of the family, and that's bc I made him like that by educating him(nicely obviously) nd bc parrots hace different personalities, dogs and cats nd all the animals, it's just like people, we are the same
This is just my opinion, no hate, no nothing, just telling my experience

You need to have a room that is suitable for birds. We have a room for our 3 Amazon's. My 3 birds are pretty mellow and not nasty to me. Most birds pick one person. All of mine are bonded to me. As far as destruction goes you need to have there room set up so they have toys to chew and play with . I think 500 a month is super high. Your bird needs training. There are people that specialize in bird training People say Amazon's are crazy. My guys are pretty mellow . If they dont want to be touched i leave them alone. Not all birds are hard to deal with.

Proper handling and training they can become Awesome pets.Everyone should study everything about every animal they want it saves a lot of headaches later and it's the way to make sure you end up with the best pet for you .Common sense should tell a person that children and large birds with1850 foot pounds behind beak just don't mix .

I'm strongly considering 1. Not necessarily a Yellow and Blue. Watching this video on a link from my mom that I got the day after mentioning my interest. Personally though, as of now, in the middle of the video where they show the life that you 'could' have with your pup and your bird, if the cost is busted trim, curtains and computer keys, 500 a month, bites on the nose and it need its entire own bedroom that still seems like a steal on my end. IDK. Great info though.

    • @bradb7010

So as I am considering one, if I had to have an interview before and they asked me about your 5 points these would be my responses. Let me know any I seem incredibly naïve about. I'd love the feedback. I've been talking about it for a while, so I've heard all 5 many many times. 5 is by far the most common I hear. But some of my thoughts on the points, from a personal perspective.
      1. The overall damage didn't look that terrible but I get it. A 4 year old just randomly breaking shit seems annoy AF.
      2. See above, 4 year oldish. Very moody, but the moodiness is sorta the flipside of keeping an animal that is so smart.
      3. The cost and on going costs wouldn't be a factor.
      4. Space/time. This one is probably where I'm looking for the most feedback. I work from home most of the time, usually go in to the office 2 days a week. The days I'm not home, it could be a 7-8 hour cage session. That being said my wife is home most of the time as well so don't I see a lot of 'no human around' time. I don't really travel. Space is a topic I'm still researching. When you are downstairs explaining space you have Shelby in a decent size cage. My thoughts would have that size or a bit bigger. But you mentioned one upstairs as well? Would the cage you have in the video be a sufficient size cage for a bird of this size? Like if you didn't have any other sort of cage? You have the pretty large pen in the backyard, not that difficult to make but is a pen of that size mandatory for this type of animal?
      5. Most common thing I hear, how long they live. I understand, it is not a pet, it is a life long companion. That being said, to me this point almost seems silly when I think about it from the extreme ends of the spectrum. Obviously if you're 76, you shouldn't get a hatchling. But everyone saying how long they live is almost like saying if you want a macaw you need to get it when you are 1 years old, otherwise the possibly that it could outlive you is a dealbreaker. Seems like a fair amount of time in the middle of those is sufficient overlap is timelines.
I had been thinking about adoption from a rescue. Most specifically a bird that is 30 years old. I'm 41. Personally that seemed like a pretty similar life trajectory.
This video uses the term macaw fairly broadly. You have a blue-and-yellow, do any of this 5 major things change when the breed does? BY/African grey/cockatoo/hyacinth/yellow nape amazon/scarlet?
      Thank you!

However he also had a red(scarlet) male who was an aggressive asshole and left me scars even 10 years later. I have no idea why he bit me so many times, I was always kind. I can only conclude it's because he was an asshole. If it was my bird, I would have had it euthanized.
