You can't really compare the 2 singers as they have different styles. As a classical singer myself, I prefer Deanna's voice and could listen to her for hours. Judy had a good voice type for popular films of the period and I did like her voice too.
I agree. For a kick-off, Deanna was a Soprano and Judy was a Mezzo-soprano, so you're working with two completely different vocal-ranges for a kick-off. The two voice-types are absolutely nothing alike whatsoever.
What is somebody's cure is some one else's poison. No comparison what-so- ever. Judy was so so much into rubato insightful emotional soulful melodious and harmonious, perfect pitch and amazing hues colorful voice. I agree with her daughter Liza. Nobody ever sing so humanly poignantly like Judy. Listen to her Blues in the night, That old black magic called love, I've got you under my skin, Time after time, The joint is really jumping down at Carnefie Hall, So insensitive, Stormy weather. Poetry and passion, truth and beauty... Angelic voice and divine personality, strong charming character.
Both very talented young women singing in their own styles. That is the best news for them both. If they sang like each other, there would have been uncomfortable competition.
Judy Garland was a great performer, she can't be compared with Deanna, too much difference. For me the beloved one is the wonderful Deanna Durbin, the voice, the smile, the grace in movements, she was an angel and she was able to retire at the right moment without regrets
Ah Garland, fresh out of vaudeville with a notoriously loud, booming voice. Why MGM softened her down to where all her songs sounded like Over The Rainbow is beyond me. We didn't get this power back until 1950.
Probably, my guess is because to sing with a melodious sweet voice was in fashion. It was what audiences enjoyed most at that time. Another possibility is that they wanted to create an image of a sweet girl out of Judy.
Michael, you must have lost your hearing aid. I got Rhythm, The Trolley song, It's a great day for the Irish, Mack the Black, On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe, If you feel like sing, sing. I'm sure I missed a few, Ah, how about Johnny One Note, she blows your doors off with this number. I still missed some. But, these , make my point. And of course Get Happy.
Terry Smith: As much as I loved those songs and the movies they were in, they didn’t compare to big, booming numbers like Swanee, Old Man River, San Francisco, The Man That Got Away, and many others from the 50s and 60s. However, I did love to hear her sing those soft gentle numbers, too. I think the most beautiful song I ever heard her sing was “It Never Was You”. I have read that it was a very difficult song to sing, but she nailed it every time.
2 incredibly talented girls. Judy became everybody's favorite with the Wizard of oz and all those signing movies with mickey rooney. She was way more exposed to the media. Deanna Durbin was a completely different style. She had a wonderfull classical voice and made a whole bunch of movies before calling it quits and leaving Hollywood. I have all of Deanna's movies. The studio took advantage of both cause money is the bottom line for them. Both are missed, both had incredible talents.
hey they cut the good part aww man anyways I love Judy and Deanna both are my favorites because personally goes a long long loooong way baby you know something these two beautiful actresses are looking like sisters in a way both could sing, dance, plus acting they both went through a lot in those days alot of work went into all of those sketches and other things that each of them did so beautifully well choreographed in singing and dancing and of course their best different styles of show men ship but in all wonder and the splendor of it all just fabulously sweet love you girls stay gold in glory city sweethearts peace everybody.
They were equally telented.Judy was a popular singer, agreat stage performer and a very talented actress. She was Mrs Show Bussiness. Deanna was an excelent soprano with a marveleus tecnique,
I would like to wish Deanna a very joyful and happy christmas and a healthy new year,to me she is the most gifted and talented lady i ever seen on the silver screen love you Deanna
Anthony, I hate to.tell you this, but, Deanna was very talented, but, she wasn't even close to Judy as far as talent goes. Singing, modern, swing, jazz, Hymns, boogie, acting, comedy, drama, Dancing, tap, ballroom, jitterbug. Deanna was very talented, but, Judy was the greatest entertainer and Greatest all round talent of all time.
+Stephen Albertson There will always be talented singers in every genre. Some prefer Garland, others prefer Durbin. Right now there is Jackie Evancho, who seems to be developing in the Durbin mold. Evancho is learning the old fashioned way - she starts with unique talent, then perfects her style with hundreds of live concerts. Evancho is the ultimate professional, and she just turned 16. Durbin developed on Eddie Cantor's radio program, while Garland was singing, as a preteen, with her older sisters. That is why they are all similar, yet different, of course. They all started "good", and worked hard to be perfect. They were not "one hit wonders".
I THINK THAT COMMENT ABOUT DEANNA DURBIN IS VERY UNFAIR, IF YOU DO YOUR RESEARCH, YOU WILL FIND THAT EVERYONE WHO KNEW DEANNA AND HAD CONTACT WITH HER COMMENTED ABOUT HOW KIND AND CARING SHE WAS, BELIEVE ME, I HAVE INSIDE KNOWLEDGE OF DEANNA, (RELATIVES) AND THAT COMMENT IS SERIOUSLY WRONG...
This is not the first film that both the girls made. The first was a one-reel that was lost. We can see that by Deanna´s name and song. They had been given by Universal. Deanna Durbin´s name at MGM was her real name, Edna May Durbin.
Deanna Durbin is from Winnipeg (Canada). OMG ... 50+ years old and I didn't know that. She still has family here. Her house is still there. Excuse my excitement .... Canadians have a thing about people born here who make it big ... it comes from our inferiority complex. Judy and her had similar beginnings .... Grand Rapids, Minnesota is not that far from Winnipeg ... both around the same age and both left for California when they were young.
@carmenjones411 You may well be right. I don't believe this guff about Deanna being difficult. I do appreciate both of them and they are so different that I don't see why one cannot be a fan of both Judy and Deanna.
and she could have been an ópera soprano if she wanted or had a longer career as a musical performer.Rodgers and Hammerstein wanted her to be the original Laurie in Oklahoma and also Anna in the King and I and the Mother Abbess in The sound of music. Also Mario Lanza wanted to be with her in The toast of New Orleans and The great Caruso. Its a pity that she didnt do any of them. She died las April 20th,2013 at 91 inFrance where she lived since 1948. So I loved both artists very much and Metro could have been with both although they didnt drop Deanna,Universal contracted her for her first success Three smart girls in 1935.
I don't know much about Deanna Durbin. Judy's videos brought me here. I know a lot about Judy. I'm not aware if any animosity existed between the two, but I can see there is animosity between their fans. My 2 cents: Deanna Durbin is largely forgotten, although still alive. Judy Garland has moved past legendary status - she is iconic. And she paid for that with her life. And I think, if Judy could have chosen, she would still have chosen the way her life ended up to that of Deanna Durbin's. imho.
You can't really compare the 2 singers. They had very different singing styles. Judy was more easy listening/musical theatre, while Deanna had a classical voice. I like both but could listen to Deanna for longer am afraid.
@antinotis I think that would have been even worse for Judy. Can you imagine her competing with Durbin at the same studio? Judy already lacked a good support system at home and MGM surely would have pitted the two against each other and Judy probably would have met her demise even earlier because the strain of it all.
Deanna was in fact supposed to provide the voice for Snow white in the Walt Disney cartoon however her voice was considered to be too mature for the part and they offered it elsewhere.
I grew up in L.A. My father worked at Columbia. I had all sorts of connexions to showbiz. A relative of Lou Ostrow (MGM and RKO producer). Friends with Al Finestone's family. He worked at Paramount publicity. Another relative at Universal, etc. It was common knowledge. All those who worked with Garland on Wizard of Oz said how nice she was. Most of those at Fox such as Robert Stack commented on Durbin being a bitch.
@HeatherGlen33 Interesting comments. I think both could act and both ended up with short movie careers. Judy had to move on to concerts and TV. Not that I minded. She was phenomenal. Deanna was with Universal and they her mostly awful material and of course movie tastes changed after the war.
Deanna Durbin is a very much better singer than Judy Garland....and beautiful too! She had everything, a beautiful voice and a beautiful face....God loves her so much!
+Fr. Duffy Fighting 69th Yes, Fr. Duffy! There is only one Judy Garland! Me, having an operatic voice and learn the songs of Deanna Durbin (pieces given to me by my maestra) chose Deanna over Judy Garland. Judy Garland in fairness is very talented and, of course she can sing with a different style compared to Deanna who was an operatic singer with a beautiful voice and a beautiful face!
Both beautiful voices, but you can't compare them. How can you compare a soprano with a popular singer? In my opinion you can't say who is better because they have different styles. Both were very good but none were perfect
IT IS VERY RUDE AND IGNORANT TO CALL DEANNA DURBIN A 'BITCH' WHEN YOU DO NOT EVEN KNOW HER PERSONALLY, IF YOU TOOK THE TIME TO RESEARCH DEANNA DURBIN YOU WILL FIND THAT EVERYONE WHO WORKED WITH HER ADMIRED HER PROFESIONALISM AND HOW KIND AND CURTEOUS SHE WAS, DEANNA WAS WELL KNOWN FOR BEING KIND AND CARING... SHE AND JUDY WERE CLOSE FRIENDS. DEANNA IS HAPPY AND HEALTHY, LIVING IN FRANCE AND WILL BE 91 IN 2012... I LOVE BOTH JUDY AND DEANNA :0)
Well said Richard, Deanna was an outstanding person at all times. Yes, she was a very close friend of Judy Garland. The difference is Deanna got out of Hollywood at the right time, where Judy remained longer And was seriously mistreated. It was so sad how Judy was treated. In 1983 Durbin was interviewed and stated how they were terribly treated in Hollywood. Cheers
WHAT?? When did D. D. move to Canada to live? last I knew of, she was still living in France.. I think someone needs to check their facts... I could be wrong, but, I don't think so......
In fact she was of Irish descent. Referred to herself as an Irish biddy.... ha ha ha. She was really witty... often bucks of joy and laugh. Hardly anybody knows her like that. Nowadays people prefer tragedy and sadness to wit and classy entertainment , particularly of people as marvelous and complex as Judy was.
i'm glad they didn't make shirley temple as dorothy u can't really connect to her acting the same way u would connect with judy garland, plus she sings so much more amazing than temple !!
No, it's cause she was under contract with fox, and a very busy girl herself. But you're right, she wasn't much of a singer, kind of like Carol Channing. Unlike Garland, Temple was paid very well.
I heard, years ago, that Judy and Deana were filming a scene together when Harry Cohn walked in, watched for a while, then said to one of his assistants "get rid of the fat one". Which quite rude since both of them, being very young, had a lot of puppy fat.
Some of this commentary is factually inaccurate. Deanna Durbin had already been released by MGM and signed by Universal when this short was made. Deanna was brought back through a loan-out agreement. To be fair, it's easy to see why the "short-as-a-screen test" rumor persisted. It took many decades to ferret out the truth, which was finally revealed by a close scrutiny of contemporary trade magazines.
Both girls are delightful on screen. Off screen Judy was just as genuine and sweet. Durbin was a banshee!! The nastiest bitch you'd care to meet. Superhartline.
Funny how Judy Garland was jealous of Deanna. Said she was “ugly” and “had a unibrow”. Totally different voice times that would never be considered for the same role so I don’t really understand any reason to be jealous.
Yes Deanna had a wonderful voice but after a while of listening to her voice it gets a little annoying. Yeah I heard alot of people say "well Judy is long gone dead and Deanna is still going strong" say what you want but who was more successful in movies and music? Judy Garland. Who left a larger mark of the entertainment of America? Judy Garland
Shirley Temple was a world-class tap dancer. She was a lousy singer and actress, at least as a child. She would have stunk up the Wizard of Oz, and it would be totally forgotten today.
Vincent Fitzpatrick I recently read an article that said the big shots really wanted Temple, who was much more famous, so the producer went to see her perform somewhere. He came back to the studio and said ”her vocal limitations are insurmountable”. I agree with you that she was a lousy singer and actress. But thank goodness she didn’t get the part; Judy was born to play that role and she’s the reason that everyone still knows that movie, and always will, I guess.
gemmagemmz: Yes, That was why. The Producer went to see her (Shirley) perform somewhere specifically to see if she could handle the role, because the big shots at MGM wanted her (she was much more famous than Judy). The Producer came back and said, “Her vocal limitations are insurmountable.”
Deanna Durbin has NOT lived in Canada since she left Canada with her family when she was just a toddler. She left America and Hollywood behind her because she was sick and tired of being a puppet and gold fish in a fish bowl for Hollywood to control and the world to own. She took took control of her life and moved to the outskirts of Paris, France with her third husband, French director, Henri Charles. She died there on April 20, 2013. This video is biased and incorrect being Liza Minnelli doing the narrating. The "fat one" as legend goes WAS NOT Deanna Durbin, but was in fact Judy Garland. Deanna Durbin never had a weight issue in her life - whereas, Judy Garland did - hence, her early introduction into barbiturate use.
You sound as though you have an attitude problem with Judy. I didn't listen to the whole Liza thing. But, Judy often talked about M.G.M.s problem with her weight. The fat little kid, the chubby one, she's to fat. So any true fan knows that Liza mis-spoke, or lied. I'm sure she didn't write the script. I'm not defending her, because, I'm not a fan of hers. I'm a huge fan of her mother's ( the greatest entertainer and the greatest talent that ever lived ). Liza, I believe is highly over-rated. Especially when it came to singing. I'm tone deaf, and even I could hear those clinkers she would hit.
@antinotis Durbin didn't like show business. They moved her from singing to a glamours movie, and she failed miserably. Judy could act. Lots of charmisa. Durbin married and had ( I think) 5 children and lived in Paris.
I completely disagree Deanna Durbin never failed she was the highest paid female star in Hollywood for years and saved Universal studios from bankruptcy she herself admitted that she disliked the miss goody two shoes role she always had to play and disliked being little miss fix it but Universal were adamant that she played the same role hence why she decided to walk away she never failed at anything she did quite the opposite and she had and still has a huge following in the UK
Deanna was a crazee fan of Wagner Operas and Mozartiana Concerts and German and French liedern...Judy was jewish of tin pan alley and Music Hall Americana..Deanna dislike jazz intensively
Judy Garland = The G.O.A.T. There will never be another like her.
These two girls were amazing. Both had voices of angels back in the day.
Deanna Durbin didn't move back to Canada. She moved to France and lived out her life there after she left Hollywood in 1950, until her death in 2013.
RIP Deanna Durbin, died in France recently where she had lived since leaving Hollywood.

Deanna Durbin was signed by another studio immediately afterwards, starred in 'Three Smart Girls', and became a star.
Can’t touch Judy Garland. Greatest performer and entertainer in showbiz history. Hands down🏆
Judy Garland was a great performer, she can't be compared with Deanna, too much difference. For me the beloved one is the wonderful Deanna Durbin, the voice, the smile, the grace in movements, she was an angel and she was able to retire at the right moment without regrets
I dont think one was better than the other. they were each great in their own way
Mike Tyson of all people stated that Judy Annihilates her and she does. Her showmanship and sheer force of personality is astounding
Trang: You hit the nail on the head. No one could match Judy in showmanship and personality, from the very beginning.
2 freakishly talented young ladies.
Great to get a good look at both of them so young. Deanna.... sooooo fine! Judy too of course!

Deanna is adorable in the movie Spring Parade posted on youtube now ...Its foolish but its fun. What a gem.
This program is directly from MGM's THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT!
It can be found on DVD and is the History of the MGM musical.
MS. GARLAND WAS TRULY AMAZING
Dropping Deanna Durbin was a big mistake. MGM would have made her a big star and she and Judy were so different that each would have had their niche.
R.I.P. Mrs. Durbin
Bet MGM wished they kept Deanna as well
@kerryincolumbus Yes Deanna still lives just outside Paris, France. She'll be 91 this year..

There will always be talented singers in every genre. Some prefer Garland, others prefer Durbin. Right now there is Jackie Evancho, who seems to be developing in the Durbin mold.
Deanna Durbin was the better singer and actress
Maybe for that time, but Judy was way ahead of her time
@@millers3888 When Deanna Durbin left Hollywood she was one of the richest women in the world. Unfortunately, Judy Garland never had that security.
Deanna was a crazee fan of Wagner Operas and Mozartiana Concerts and German and French liedern...Judy was jewish of tin pan alley and Music Hall Americana..Deanna dislike jazz intensively
