I love how when Mannix walks into the club he waves a sheet of paper so he can see thru the smoke, yet he is smoking a cigarette! Classic show, especially with the Byrds and Stephen Stills singing.

Amazing live music by Buffalo Springfield!! Knocks me out.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Stephen Stills was asked if he ever regrets not taping some of their concerts, he mentions this Mannix episode:
"Yeah. The best sound we ever got was when we did this stupid TV show [Mannix, Oct 1967] where we played just a little bit of a song and we were like, 'Oh, my God, that's the sound we've been looking for'. It was the only place we could get that sound right."

Agreed. There's very little "live" Buffalo Springfield recordings and I think by now I've heard them all. They definitely hit the "Zen Zone" here. I've never seen the band look this "relaxed" and on point. I've never seen them look this "cool" either.
Just wish they had more screen time in the episode.

"gimme about 35 cents of apple strudel!" Ha ha ha ha
Sadly, I understand the live recording is lost to the sands of time.
Most TV shows employed lip syncing, or singing to an instrumental track of an artist's song. Buffalo Springfield was the real deal.
"Hey! I haven't had my apple strudel yet!" Mannix always rocked.
R.I.P. Mike Connors. Thanks for entertaining me as a kid.

Later in this episode they play a live version of "For What It's Worth." I had the same reaction! I was sitting on the couch, half watching this crappy Mannix on a Nick-At-Night rebroadcast of this specific night of the CBS lineup from 1967. I was practicing my bass while reading a magazine with the TV on. Suddenly I realize I'm listening to Bluebird but it sounds a little off. When I looked at the TV and saw them I swear my first reaction was: "Gee, I'm sure they must have filmed this in LA, why didn't they get the real group instead of a bad teenage cover band. I'll bet one of them is the producer's son." Then I spotted that guy playing guitar in the far right corner and thought: "That guy kinda looks like Neil Young. Hey, wait a minute."

FYI - This is 1st Year "Mannix!" before Desilu Studio maven Lucille Ball saved the show and had it re-tooled without Mannix working for Lew Wickershim (Joe Campanella) and Intertech. Lucy didn't feel the general public could relate to the computer aspects of the show. So in season 2 Joe Mannix went into private practice with Peggy Fair (Gail Fisher) as his faithful executive assistant. "Peggy" was one of the first black women to be cast in a recurring/co-starring role on TV in those days.

I can see why Stills thought this recorded performance was so good!
Also...kinda interesting that Topanga's hottest new buzz band at the time of filming here, is in an episode about a young girl ending up in a "hippie" commune/cult...seeing how the Manson Family were not long for residing in Topanga also, AND - Manson Family member Ella Jo Bailey was a Buffalo Springfield groupie prior to joining with the MF.
