WHAT IS HIGH GRADE STONE?
Anything you can run a 1/2" or more flake with a pressure flaker.
HEAT TREATING:
Heat treat a few FLAKES of everything you got except HIGH GRADE Raw Stone, Obsidian, Dacite, Basalt, Hornstone, Sonora, Fort Payne, or Rhyolite. Start with flakes and spalls less than 1" thick for 200°F for 24 hours to dry it out. Then raise the temp to 275°F and hold for 4 hours. Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back I at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 4 hours.
Let cool down for 12 hours. Chip and compare. If no difference, put back in at 200°F for 1/2 hour, then raise to 275 for 1/2 hour, then raise to 325 for 1/2 hour, the raise to 375 for 4 hours.
Repeat with temp going up 50°F until you reach 600°F or nice chippable stone. Whichever comes first. If no good result, or things blow up, let us know.

I like seeing your "mistakes", and how you correct them, because 90% of my strikes are "mistakes", at least not what I intended. I am up to accurately predicting what you are about to do about 50% of the time, so I am learning.
I've been watching Jason Newman knapping bifaces recently. How do you begin to teach someone that?
Think it comes down to years and years of practice and superb material....as always!
You also make it look to easy and it isn't. I've been practicing and practicing refining bifaces for sometime and it's a cow😂. I've got to send you some big quarry bifaces of my local English flint to see what you can do with them. I'll start sorting material over the coming weeks and get a box together. Hopefully I'll get something better than you've had so far from England.

Obsidian is a piggy backing rock. Spread the flakes out some.
Glass Buttes? I live in Oregon I went there got 200lbs of beautiful goldsheen mahogany. I went in May not many people there the online map is not helpful at all and I think i need an orienteering refresher to make the landmarks make sense. Gonna try to talk John into a weekend so i can make the knap-in this year. Maybe someone there will know where the big stuff can be found. I will say it was the most tiring fun digging holes following seams.😊
Ask them why the knap in is in the winter!? It's a month too early for sure. And the big obsidian is in China! People are stealing it and shipping it to China.

@@marycomeau9364 All of the obsidian collection areas in Oregon are CLOSED because of rampant misuse and abuse of the resources. Closed, gated, and watched by rangers. Chinese buyers are willing to pay for the stuff. People were building illegal roads and cutting down trees to remove truckloads of the best obsidian. Glass Buttes will be closed for the same reason if it doesn't stop. I hope that explains it better. People suck and ruin everything.
