As a post heavensward sprout who does'nt progress msq fast because I want to lvl all clases to 60, I really appreciate mentioning of spoiler-heavy dungeon
@exodere9105 I've stated in a previous mentor roulette video that I personally wish they'd dial back warrior some, stated as someone who plays warrior mainly for my tanking, because having one tank be THIS GOOD, even if it is casual content, is a bit much. Just as an example, learning to heal as a new player is insane since if your tank is a good warrior, they hardly need you here, while if they are almost anything else, your importance can be crucial. And these new players might have no clue why it is THAT much different. That's just one example of course. My idea for how they could dial back warrior without changing how it feels in harder content much is to heavily nerf how much the healing scales with more targets. Maybe buff the healing slightly for a single target to compensate, but it might not even matter. For example, it could heal for only 1/4th of the amount for targets beyond the first hit. But yes, the joke about war soloing everything in my case at least is both me mentioning I've done it, and also a slight nod to the fact war is off the scale 😅
@@CaetsuChaijiCh "And these new players might have no clue why it is THAT much different"... my experience exactly while learning healing. GB and DK suddenly dying under my watch was a concerning experience. Healxiety reactivated.
@@CaetsuChaijiChMore than even learning healing it's legitimately really disheartening to queue healer into a Warrior tank in late game content because after a certain point you don't even need to be there, and healer DPS kit is usually "press one button over and over and upkeep your DoT every 30 seconds". Either Warrior needs to have a little less self-sustain, or healers need to get a bit less of a mind-numbingly dull damage rotation - ideally both, but that feels like too much to ask in the short term at least. I just think FFXIV's design where healers are expected to contribute a significant chunk of the team's damage while also not having even remotely engaging ways of doing that is really weird.
I was surprised your party didn't use waymarks for the Enemy Parties (Savage) fight, since positioning is crucial during that. Good thing your team worked together to position and face the mobs correctly so the AoEs don't cover the whole arena. I saw that you almost failed the Moldy Sneeze mechanic, although that one is very hard to do properly. That was an intense fight and congrats on the clear!
Your mention of "TBN at the start of a pull is not optimal with a WHM" doesn't really matter when you consider that most WHM players themselves aren't optimal. It's hit or miss as to whether or not they will even use Holy one time. Hard to plan your cooldown usage properly when you don't know what the other players are going to do.
Ya know, I think I've taken my grn DPS for granted. I always go burr as all my healers, so I always go holy as soon as the pull stops. I say this because I got Thalia on my Araid roulette yesterday, and has white mage, I manged to have 2-3 highest aggro in my party, out dpsing all the dps in the party at times. Actually, the tank had stance on, so at points I was top dps. /shrug
To add a little bit to the concept of interlacing your cooldowns, every tank can use a basic version of it: Arm's Length combined with Reprisal lining up with Rampart with Reprisal. If the pack's autos are hitting quite hard, the combo of Slowing them and Reprisaling them can take a FAT chunk out of their potential damage, saving you from using other mit to have to deal with it. Arm's Length has a cd of 120 seconds, but Reprisal only has a cd of 60. Once Reprisal comes off cooldown, you can use it in conjunction with Rampart to deal with a lesser pull's damage output. You can also perform this in reverse order if a former pack hits less hard than a latter pack. In general, Reprisal is a good mitigation to combine/interlace with others due to its short cooldown and (iirc) the unique quality of NOT stacking multiplicatively with other mit (due to lowering an enemy's OUTGOING damage rather than lowering your INCOMING damage) On Warrior, oftentimes using this combo followed up by a Bloodwhetting will give you enough HP to survive most packs, and then Vengeance (soon-to-be Damnation) can be used as an intermediate cooldown. If somehow the pack isn't over before then, your Bloodwhetting should be off CD anyways so no worries there (how is this button still 25 seconds please never nerf this button it's so cool)
So on the whole new tank thing, the situation I"m in is that I leveled a tank (DRK) with trusts to see the role quests but haven't tried to tank with other people yet due to a lack of courage. So I'd totally be that person with a level 90 tank apologizing for never having tanked before 😅 Of course, I'd also be meaning that I'm happy to take nice, constructive criticism, so apologizing at the beginning could just mean something like that!
actually using TBN right at the start with whm is optimal in most cases the shield will very likely break before whm has time to cast holy, especially considering the long delay between the cast end and the actual damage landing on mobs
So a weird duty i had back in ShB. I went into Titania as a GNB. My cotank was agvressively spamming provoke and causing alot of issues especially going into the ad phase. After a couple wipes i looked at his gear and saw he was wearing multiple lvl 60 piece and was using the ARR relic PLD sword. Not the shield just the sword. I went back and forth with him and basically told him to just only provoke and hold the west most ad the entire time so we could clear the fight at all.
Had an interesting ala mihgo run today with a healer with bad internet as a tank, a couple of deaths, a couple of wipes but we got through, just took it steady
As someone who is well… a Sprout still. Did notice that of late, as I’m doing Shadowbringers for the first time that there is a lot more mentors in my dungeon and trial queues. Not sure exactly why, probably last minute Dawntrial prep. But, these videos have helped alot. Since I’ve been running stuff as tanks mostly. Know it’s usually not suggested to go into new content as a tank usually, but feels rather good when I can make a good judgement/guesstimate about what the enemies number/damage will be for the next pull. Though, if anything… feel like I’ve just had really good healers. Ngl.
What do you mean by "not suggested to go into new content as tank"??? Someone had to be the first anyway! Don't worry about that! For some players it can be scary, but I say go into new content as whatever job or role you feel most confident in! 😊
I can give you advise since i was in the same shoes once: "F*** it, i Ball" Nothing gives you more experience than dying to certain mechanics. NOTHING. Not even Guides can give you that much knowledge.
Dunno whats wrong about pulling a pack with Range Attacks. When you run straight to the Enemy, doing a ranged attack at max Range and by the time you reached the Enemy the GCD is already done for the Aoe attack. Never had any issue grabing a full pack. The only issue is when you have DPS Attacking Enemies while you run to the 2nd Trash Pack.
If you do it from max range yes, usually you can do an aoe attack as you reach them. However if your strategy relies on the dps not attacking while you pull more, then you need to change something 😂 That's why I usually slow down briefly to hit the pack with a second aoe attack at least. (slow down, not stop, because that confuses the group)
Not me but a friend I had She went in a dungeon, and the tank told them not to attack any enemies except the one he's targeting She was confused but found out why Every mob, he used provoke, mob pulls took long because he wouldn't use an AOE until provoke hit every single mob In an fc alliance raid, our tank was an overpowered dark, where he could hold aggro over a war that was trying to take aggro from The paladin, was using provoke on the bosses, on cool down and told the alliance "it's in my rotation so I'm using it no matter what people say" I'm not 100% on this, but isn't using provoke obsessively a bannable thing, Not sure on it but it was a while ago, I don't know how I remembered this
Man, EU must be cut throat, the worst I've experienced is the party starting a boss before everyone gets there. The rest of the time my parties are happy to wait for d/c's and afk's, though most afks give us a warning or come back pretty quick and apologize.
1:38 that is... How most roulettes go. People waiting a bit and just bantering if someone DCs and waiting for cutscene watchers is what I see in like 80% of dungeons and dometimes even in alliance roulettes, but a lot more rare there
I had an… interesting Stone Vigil run as WHM (I think it was stone; level 40ish). No new players, but at least one was leveling up a PLD as they were level 41 walking in. I liked that they pulled slowly instead of wall-to-wall, so I thought I could relax. I noticed quickly something was wrong, as their health was just melting if I didn’t have regen up, let them focus in and get everyone on the same page (I did ask for a sec loading in as I had to adjust my grip) but it kept happening. I then saw his hp was comparable to my own, and since cure 1 healed 25% on him, and he’d need it almost as fast with 3+ mops I asked at the final door how old his gear was. The chest was apparently level 15. I’m impressed he only died once due to two players being on fire and I looked away. I also stopped damaging during pulls and was overly cautious during bosses
One of my most memorable duties was Dzamael with a dps wearing mostly DoH gear. Of the 2 or 3 piece of combat gear they wore, the highest level was...lvl 5. We were spamming specific dungeons to help a friend level, and we got that same person THREE times that day. I felt so trolled!
As a newer player myself who's been trying out different classes, I try to always let my party know if I'm inexperienced in the class I'm playing at the beginning.
Thing about commendations at the end, I recently hit 3k Commendations and was greatly disappointed by the reward. It I just a Fat Chocobo mount and I already had 3 other Fat Chocobo mounts. Compared to the Gold Magitek Armor from earlier in the achievement cycle for Commendations, it was a disappointment
for me in one DR leveling, i got in holminster switch as sage, the DRK pull 3 packs and only use TBN as defensive....he died and said, i can pull less u cant heal, i didnt say anything, i mean....im a sage lol...as shield healer, beside lv70 wont have full kit ogcd for healing, and he pulled 3 packs again with just TBN....he died again and he raged quit instantly
The issue with the SGE's mana is they aren't using any mana regen. You either get through the shared caster skill or by using your single target or aoe heal abilities even if its not needed.
Congrats on the 200 mentor runs! Just going to be honest, will definitely miss this series. But glad to hear you'll be continuing in the future! Hope you'll have a great time with Dawntrail :)
When it comes to Enemy Parties guildhest, there was time when Marauder didnt have Overpower yet(it used to be level 12 up to patch 4.0) and with no tank stance, it was big mess as he couldnt effectivelly do what guildhest supose to teach him.
Oof, I believe they could get flash from gladiator in arr and hw at least, but this early in the leveling that would be incredibly unlikely for them to have!
Question on the comment about the DRK in Prae and how they pulled. As a neophyte tank my approach is to use my ranged +agro attack (unmend for DRK) to start and then hit an AOE attack (or sometimes 2) as I move through the pack. Then I'll try to continue with unmend as the pack trails behind me until we get to the next one and I want to use it on them. I do find that sometimes I have to do a little cleanup when we reach the end of the pull. Is there a better approach to this that would lead to cleaner results? Great video as always, thanks.
Using a ranged attack and then aoe is sometimes enough, but often when you do this, you'll already clash into the mobs before your gcd is ready again after the ranged attack, giving a higher chance the mobs will start to spread out and not get it. If the dps players in your group are going ham on the damage while you pull more, it is pretty common they will steal away mobs you only hit with a single aoe attack, so often a bit more can be necessary! I have two common approaches I personally use. The first one works for any number of enemies: run up to the enemies, as you approach you will enter combat with them, then use an aoe attack when you feel all of them are in range. Often I will zig zag a bit as I continue through the pack, so that I can hit most of them with the step two of the aoe attack. If I am playing dark knight, I will often also shoot a flood of darkness back on the enemies as I pass. The extra aoe attack helps make sure the enemies stick to you incase you have some very excited dps players. If one mob in the pack is weirdly far away from the rest of it as you approach, using provoke to make it run towards you a moment sooner than the rest can be helpful. The second strategy I often use for up to four targets in the first pack of the pull: use your ranged attack on one mob, tab to next target, provoke, tab next target, ranged attack, next target, and then ranged attack that one. As you run, it is likely you will pass the pack as you target the fourth mob. Sometimes another player might get hit once before the fourth mob is picked up, but the rest of the party isn't made of paper, they can take a hit! This strategy leads to more enmity on all four enemies than the previous strategy, and is especially good if the run to the next pack is really long. Both strategies can of course be supplemented with more ranged attacks, but often with sprint you may be out of range to do that! The particular problem in the praetorium group was that it felt like, at least to me, that the tank used their ranges attack when they were too close, so the aoe attack came a bit slow, which then caused some mobs to get a bit crazy. But as you saw it was no big deal and something we can recover from! 😊 I actually go over some pulling strategies in my tips for tanks guide from a while back, that I believe include the two I listed above! Here is a link ua-cam.com/video/vdIYobuVpbY/v-deo.htmlsi=3u2tQKRa8npe2PCp
I think for the "double-stuffed" tank cooldown cycling, one variant I've done is starting the next cooldown when my previous cooldown isn't quite done, like 3-5 seconds left, so there's at least one attack of extra defense without completely overdoing it on mits. Like Nebula, then reprisal when Nebula still has 5 seconds, then Corundum when Reprisal has 5 seconds. Not that exact order of course, but something that helps.
i love watching your videos when i have my afternoon coffee. always a good time edit: good lord that's a lot of commendations. i only have 1357 and i been playing since late stb lol. but then again i also main brd
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you! 😄 And hey, what gives commendations can be a lot of things! The important part at least is making sure to view in a positive way as you get more! 😄
I guess it depends on the dungeon and how many ranged mobs there are in the packs, but I often find myself needing to use equilibrium while pulling as warrior, even when I sprint.
That can sometimes happen if there are a lot of ranged mobs in the pack. Usually I find it gets resolved with raw intuition when you reach the destination as well! 😊
Had a healer apologising because they wanted to watch the cut scenes and they were still learning healer, the good in FF community everybody said it's fine and the tank asked if he should go smaller pulls
Sometimes I imagine these players that apologize extra hard may recently have had a run in with some of the toxic parts of the community. Important the rest of us remind them it's okay to be here! 😅
1:20 I'll actually use provoke on one of the clones during that fight so if a melee is fighting another clone they can hit positionals but uhhhh... that warrior did it on the one they were fighting so that's definitely not why!
6:00 this is my attitude toward cooldowns as well. There's the fast one you get multiple times a pull and a couple you get for essentially every pull (on WAR that's reprisal and Equilibrium). You only really need tl alternate the 90 seconds + ones between packs.
congrats on 200 and a fun fact i dont see many people talk about is using arms length as a supplementary tank CD the slow on it is honestly a lifesaver and suprisingly good
Indeed, arms length is actually one I bring up a lot when I make tank specific guides, but it is such an obscure thing that saying it more is always better! And thank you! 😄
Probably, but was it synced? 🤔 It's important to check, because a common mistake many made was assuming titan could be soloed synced because he did it, but he did it as ninja, with doton! (which isn't even available synced!) 😅
I met a Guy in Mentor Roulette who told me to turn off mentor crown and unequip ultimate weapon skin because of no reason xD Cant turn off the crown when I queue in for mentor roulette...
They should totally make a "hard/extreme/savage" for Guildhests that scales-up as you level, so the Guildhest remains the same but is more difficult and grants a larger range of abilities
@@CaetsuChaijiCh Genuine question: with large pulls and large mobs, some mobs will get pushed away from each other and force them to spread out. How do you keep mobs like that together?
@Riplee86 there's a lot of ways to go about it. One way is to slowly step away from the pack which causes them to shuffle toward you. Another is to alternate which side you are on of the mobs, which sort of causes the mobs on the long side to overlay with the closer ones. You can also do the herding method where you circle the pack in a way. It's not easy, and sometimes you can't actually make sure they all clump perfectly in front of you, but you can at least get them mostly in front of you! I talk quite a bit about pulling and tank positioning in this video on tips for tanks 😊 ua-cam.com/video/vdIYobuVpbY/v-deo.htmlsi=ffMW6I8Ku1wHQjjD But yeah the important thing is to try your best to make clever use of how enemies move, and try your best, can't always get them all in the perfect blob, but you can try!
Watching these videos just makes playing FF14 less fun for me. Now im hyper focused on be absolutely perfect in dungeons lest a mentor make a whole ass youtube video about how i pressed a button wrong at level 50.
I didn't mean to suggest they were undergeared. Rather, gunbreakers are handed i255 gear, but you can have up to i270 gear at level 60. And I simply observed they were wearing the starter gear! 😊
Because I think it is so wildly offtrack that most of the characters can easily be hidden in plain sight if you simply don't draw attention to it 😊 By which I mean, these characters I feel don't tell much of the story unless they are pointed out as spoilers. Meanwhile aitiascope has characters and references all the way back to arr so it is hard to ignore! 🤔
Oh my god that intro LOL. That one imperial caster going "I'm gonna do it! NYEH! I'm focusing their healer, they'll crumble to pieces! NYEH!"
Even worse! He decided to have a black mage duel, and he chose fire 1 as his weapon!!

I actually go over some pulling strategies in my tips for tanks guide from a while back, that I believe include the two I listed above!
Yeah often I do something like this too, partly because that's when an opportune ogcd spot presents itself! 😊
Dude everyone is taking a break so the leftovers are playing atm 😂
i love watching your videos when i have my afternoon coffee. always a good time
edit: good lord that's a lot of commendations. i only have 1357 and i been playing since late stb lol. but then again i also main brd
I'm glad to hear that! Thank you! 😄
And hey, what gives commendations can be a lot of things! The important part at least is making sure to view in a positive way as you get more! 😄
Oh hi, it's me as the other dps in the guildhest, very difficult duty indeed.
We just barely made it!
You only really need tl alternate the 90 seconds + ones between packs.
congrats on 200
and a fun fact i dont see many people talk about is using arms length as a supplementary tank CD
the slow on it is honestly a lifesaver and suprisingly good
Indeed, arms length is actually one I bring up a lot when I make tank specific guides, but it is such an obscure thing that saying it more is always better!
And thank you! 😄
I know this is super old but I’m pretty sure Prae can be soloed because the myth the legend Rath games did it live
Probably, but was it synced? 🤔
It's important to check, because a common mistake many made was assuming titan could be soloed synced because he did it, but he did it as ninja, with doton! (which isn't even available synced!) 😅
I met a Guy in Mentor Roulette who told me to turn off mentor crown and unequip ultimate weapon skin because of no reason xD Cant turn off the crown when I queue in for mentor roulette...
What a weird person! 😅 Even if you could, no reason that you should!
Poor, poor, sweet Tataru....
I was more thinking he bulldozed others out of the way for her? 😂 Oh dear!
@@CaetsuChaijiCh LOLOL
They should totally make a "hard/extreme/savage" for Guildhests that scales-up as you level, so the Guildhest remains the same but is more difficult and grants a larger range of abilities
You really notice questionable tanking as a black mage... speaking from experience lol
"oh my flare only hit half the mobs... Again... No no it's fine, I'll just cry in the corner..." 😢
I talk quite a bit about pulling and tank positioning in this video on tips for tanks 😊 ua-cam.com/video/vdIYobuVpbY/v-deo.htmlsi=ffMW6I8Ku1wHQjjD
But yeah the important thing is to try your best to make clever use of how enemies move, and try your best, can't always get them all in the perfect blob, but you can try!
@@CaetsuChaijiCh many thanks!
Almost shut the video off because the intro was killing mr
Watching these videos just makes playing FF14 less fun for me. Now im hyper focused on be absolutely perfect in dungeons lest a mentor make a whole ass youtube video about how i pressed a button wrong at level 50.
Is it really that bad that I mention what could be done better? 🤔
Nah you can get away with a lot it’s just the very obvious mistakes that can be seen
Wait, how can a gunbreaker be undergeared in a level 60 dungeon when GNB starts at level 60 with gear ?
I didn't mean to suggest they were undergeared. Rather, gunbreakers are handed i255 gear, but you can have up to i270 gear at level 60. And I simply observed they were wearing the starter gear! 😊
@@CaetsuChaijiCh oh OK, makes sense.
im surprised you didn't mark ktisis as a spoiler story dungeon
Because I think it is so wildly offtrack that most of the characters can easily be hidden in plain sight if you simply don't draw attention to it 😊
By which I mean, these characters I feel don't tell much of the story unless they are pointed out as spoilers.
Meanwhile aitiascope has characters and references all the way back to arr so it is hard to ignore! 🤔
ARF!
ARF! 🦮
@@CaetsuChaijiCh My reply's a bit late, but after three exchanges like this, I think we're obligated to keep up the bit.
