- Being ranked as the 15th most dangerous city in the world, Durban had us pretty nervous going into this trip. But by the end of our 2 week vacation, we were in love with this country. South Africa has so much natural beauty that is so unique and vastly different from America. Durban is unlike any place we have ever traveled to. It’s cheap, has friendly locals, and has amazing views from everywhere we visited.
We can’t wait to go back some day!

If you live around Durban and have some recommendations for some “must try” foods or restaurants, we would love to hear them!
You guys should have stayed at the Oyster Hotel or the Pearls. Florida Road, Durban has the best and trending food places.
We definitely want to stay at the pearls next time! We didn’t know about it until we got there but we are much better informed now.
@@SavagesAdventures you will love it there and the high tea at Oyster Box is👌
Born and raised in Durban.
If ever you want to Try Durbans famous Bunnt Chow...You have to try Orientals...Theee Best Bunny Chow Around.
Thanks so much! We are definitely going to check that out next time. A few popped up on maps, one in Berea and one in Durban north.
Both have reviews saying they have the best bunny chow so they must be really good but do you have a preference?
Hey family, thanks for visiting my country. Just remember, this crime statistics are biased against Africa. We have a lot of AAs moving to South Africa, especially the JHB area
Oh yes, crime statistics are never a real representation of a place. It’s always a few bad areas in the city that give the whole city a bad reputation. We have similar things back in the states. And then media loves to focus just on the negatives of a place.
True if the President of S.A. was whites . They were not going to say Durban has a lot of crime.
The problem is the ratio per population. In SA we are only 62milion. But in USA a person can kill many school kids but their crime will remain way down.
I am a South African of 59 years of age and since I was born here I never had crime commited to me.
There are other whites and blacks who had the same experience as me but they are laying queit and not telling that they never had crime commited to them.
So other people are trying to take our country down but fortunately African Americans are coming to live and visit in S.A in numbers. Maybe they enjoy the place because of its similarities with USA. Our culture an their struggle for freedom.
They say crime in S.A. is nothing compared to California alone.
They say Gun violence is prominent is USA. So compared per population of 350 milion in America versus our 62milion, their rate crime high.
I am happy that you enjoyed your time in the sunny South Africa. And please come back again.
@@SavagesAdventures MASS Shootings in America are a NORM.
South Africa is wonderful country, stay in your own country we do want crybabies bad-mouthing our beloved country
@sandramoodley48 Someone, did you wrong? We welcome African Americans in South Africa, remember its not your country. You don't own it. You were just born it.
Next time you’re in Durban, you should come up the hill to an area called Kloof which has beautiful nature and hiking. Then go a bit further to Howick, the Midlands, and the beautiful Drakensberg mountains. These are my favourite areas and I’d choose them over the city any day.
'Ello Gov'nor' caught me off guard 😂😂😂
Despite of all the problems SA is facing I keep coming back. The nature is beautiful especially Camdeboo National Park and Drakensang ❤
I hope this is just the first of many trips back to South Africa. We still have so much to see!
Durban rocks! Umhlanga Rocks too! Thanks for visiting. We LOVE living here. Come back and visit us again. ❤
Can’t wait to return! We had so much fun!
Crimes unique to American mass shooting driveby shooting police high speed chase and also being the drug capital of the world
No arguments here. People are scared to send their kids to public schools anymore in America. But what I want to show in this video is that South Africa was way safer than the news wants you to believe and it’s very much worth traveling to. We loved it!
Also Gang Violence.

I'm from Durban and to be honest with you, I don't feel safe in Cape Town. I love the weather here in Durban.
Durban was perfect! The day we had to fly home, it was almost 80 degrees(26 celcius) and then when we got to London, it was 40ish degrees (5 celcius).
Yes Cape town can be a little ruff I am from Gauteng. I flew once to cape and I was told to be careful. Where blacks stay its neglected by police and the rich surbubs can hire their own security because they have money. Apartheid is alive in cape town. The life of a poor person is not taken seriously.
Fun fact (probably)... the hadeda is a nationally hated bird, mainly because of the loud noise it makes way tok early in the morning
Ahhh that’s a really fun fact. I liked them so much I bought our dog a squeaky toy hadada.
Glad to see more people visiting Durban! Hope you got to explore more of KZN!
Absolutely love KZN and can’t wait to go back! We were fortunate enough to get some time to explore the beaches but now I have so many good recommendations for the next trip
at 9.18...on the left corner just in front of that guy with the yellow shirt...my dad used to work there.....now he works shifts upstairs
White building with a little red and blue on it? That’s really cool
Welcome to South Africa . Durban is massive and may you visit Johannesburg and Sandton.
We love Durbz! I’ll have to look up Sandton, I haven’t heard of that yet. We have lots of places we want to visit on our next trip. Especially Capetown and we really want to make it to a game park to see the Big Five. Also we heard about cruises out of Durban going to Mauritius. There is so much to do we barely scratched the surface on this trip.

Thank You for viewing beautifull City of SA 👍🤗
We had a great time. Such a fun trip!
Durban my town, glad you enjoyed your stay m
I can’t wait to visit again! We really want to see the botanical garden and spend some time on the golden mile next time
bird pronounced - Haa dee daa
Hi, from Durban. I believe that bird was a cormorant.
Thanks so much!
Why do Americans believe in eating fast?
I've travelled a few countries and find people tend to take their time to eat including here in SA. In NY everything was so quick😂
Haha I didn’t know we ate fast. But we weren’t too worried about how long Roma took. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
NYC is insane. Idk how 8 million+ people can handle that city everyday. It’s the most hectic city in America.
Looking at this makes my heart a bit sore. I'm South African and we used to go to Durban twice a year on holiday. It was amazing. But now it seems a bit run down. I haven't been in about 10 years. 😔 Durban needs to be brought back to its former glory. KZN can be better than the Western Cape. But the provincial municipality in durban seems to suck.
Paul the college looks like it had sweet spots to skate LOL
The ground was pretty rough but he met a skater at a store while we were in Umhlanga and they talked for far too long lol The guy was starting the first South African skater podcast on UA-cam.
@@SavagesAdventures That's awesome! Ya'll should be guests on his podcast next time you go back
I live in Ballito, which 30 minutes north of umhlanga. Roma Revolving restaurant is not the only one in the Southern Hemisphere. There is a revolving restaurant in Perth Australia.
Oh yea you’re right! We just reiterated what we read at the restaurant. If we ever make it to Australia, we will definitely have to try it out
Next time you visit, you have to try a prawn bunny chow at Westbrook Bakery. Or crab curry at seabelle. North Coast is very safe.
A few people have mentioned Seabelle so it must be good! Also I think my husband will love prawn bunny chow. As long as they remove the shells for him 🤣
Also try britannia hotel restaurant @SavagesAdventures
yeah umhlanga rocks......gateway......pavilion......suncoast casino
The BMW dealership building is iconic 😏
🤣
There was a mini hanging from the ceiling lol
How do you not have Motion-activated Escalators?! We have them everywhere in South Africa!
I’m sure we have them somewhere but I haven’t found any yet
Hello thank you for coming to South Africa Durban hope you enjoy your time over here 🙌👊👍 please do visit Durban for whoever seen this video it a must on your bucket list 🙏💪💰
Best beaches and food with great prices!
CS park is pretty safe _ didn't think anyone would get mugged that easily
I think it was just two guys saw an opportunity and tried something. But we didn’t get mugged and I can’t say 100% that’s what would have happened but it was just unsettling. We definitely still want to go back though!
I work opposite Gateway, and drive past The Arch every day. You guys should try the pub at Virginia airport for cheap drinks. Also, I really hope you had a bunny chow
We did get bunny chow! We stayed at the Protea across from gateway so we ate at the mall a lot. I can’t remember the name of the restaurant but it was right beside whimpy’s next to the upstairs back entrance.
@@SavagesAdventures I work on palm Boulevard like two doors away from Protea. Man your videos seem to attract locals. I wish more international people can see how beautiful my home is. Thise teenagers probably just wanted a selfie you guys are too paranoid.
Awesome but the should've visited the South coast in KZN...places like Margate, palm beach, Ramsgate and the wild coast, losts of cool places along the way...
Thanks for the recommendations! We have started a very long list of stuff we have to see on our next trip. Hopefully we can stay for longer than 2 weeks next time.
Thank you for sharing. It was so interesting to see my city through your eyes ❤
Thanks for watching! I can’t wait to go back. I have so much still to do in South Africa
Its called Durban uMhlanga, which means our City is Durban as a whole from airport😂😂❤❤❤❤
I miss the durbam of my youth....the zulu rickshawd....the goggos selling authentic hand made zulu mats, bracelets etc.... it was such a vibe!. Went a few months ago znd so sad to see the waterslides empty...no rickshaws....the rundown buildings...we went to a mall and we were the ONLY white people in there, quite a few people took a second look.... But there was still a chill vibe in the air....sone really beautiful buildings there....We stayed in a hotel (work related trip) which was great...got a suite with full kitchen and amazing views for price small cheaper hotel room in cape town... weather wasnt great but i really enjoyed it....we need to revive Durban...its so worth saving
You just drove past my workplace, that hospital in Berea so beautiful to see SA thru someone else’s eyes❤
Oh that’s awesome! We loved driving around Durban quite a bit.
Good honest review
I really appreciate this comment

Thanks for visiting my country and my province KZN. Durban is my home. We currently in surbub outside Atlanta Georgia. You are right, in the USA life is a little stressful but I am not complaining.
Oh that’s so cool! Do you ever get to go back to visit? The travel to get there was so long from DC but Durban was definitely worth it.
@@SavagesAdventures yes, I go home quite frequently. The last time I went was June last year. I am going home this Christmas. The flight is long for sure. From Atlanta to JHB is 14sh hours.
Is it a direct flight from Atlanta?! We couldn’t find anything direct but we didn’t start looking until about a month before we left
@@SavagesAdventures yes, its Delta every night.
Uncle Gino means well. I'm 42 and remember being a little girl watching him fuss over my Mom and grandmother when we went for family events. Even had my 21st birthday at Roma. 😂
Amazing video of Durban. In all honesty the teenagers where probably asking if you wanted a photo of you and paul together and they would take it using yourlls camera. They do this as a kind gesture for tourists Probably got lost in translation and thats why they backed of calmly. Trouble makers wouldnt take a chance if other random locals are around. As for Roma, i thought it closed years ago and is probably more a tourist gimmick now and probably serves the same food as any downtown Italian old school restaurant. Thank you for sharing a small part of Durban to the world and welcome back anytime laarnie😂
We had such a fun time and can’t wait to go back! We have so many new recommendations now to try out. Especially for bunny chow.
Roma was really cool just for the view of Durban but it did seem like a tourist gimmick type of place. We still might go back to see a Durban sunset lol maybe just get some dessert next time. The carrot cake was amazing!
Spiga opposite Mitchell's Park is, in my opinion, a much better Italian restaurant in Durban.
Thanks so much! We went to Roma just for the views but now that we’ve done that, it’s time to find some good pasta for our next trip
Fyi - On your Google search bar on your phone , you have the mic for voice recognition and a little camera. The camera is Google lens and can identify objects in your picture. You can either upload a picture to identify or you can take a snap shot, crop the object and Google will identify it for you. A must when trying to identify wildlife..
Oh wow I’m going to have to try that out! I downloaded an app to identify plant life but didn’t realize it was so easily accessible on google
Those guys were tryin' to pick pocket y'all xD. You were smart to have picked that up because even South Africans fall victim to those "friendly" tactics xD.
They weren’t very good at it lol they started trying to talk to Paul while they were still so far away
Drive into Durban must have been 6am Sunday morning!
😂
Welcome.🥳
Thank you for your visit and video clip. Our fountry is very beautiful...but as you say a few bad eggs spoil it for others. As a South African myself, there are areas i wouldn't go to. That being said, the same applies to some cities in other countries... I've visited about 8 countries ouside of Africa and did get lost...ended up the the typical "Bronx" like areas...was very scary...so YES every country has "no-go" areas.
I hope you enjoyed your visit to sunny, friendly South Africa 🇿🇦 ❤️🇿🇦❤
We had such a great time in Durban! When we were flying into Joburg and our plane got below the clouds for the first time, we were blown away by how beautiful and green it was. And then getting to Durban and seeing the coast, we were so excited! We can’t wait to go back.
SA is not dangerous, am 35yrs never got robbed or whatever people claim
What's strange is I'm 39,grew up in a township and also never got robbed. I now stay in a suburb and still have never been robbed. I'm not saying crime doesn't exist. I just think it is blown way over proportion
That's me, I'm a woman who travels a lot on business in SA, sometimes driving alone across provinces, always feels safe.
That doesn't change the facts 😂
If you wrong place wrong time shit does go down. I have been Hi Jacked... but it was on a worksite and planned. But only once and I travel all over South Africa and Africa and overall never feel unsafe.
Love this Beautifull country.
@@philipschutte9019 Let them talk bad but the love of country will remain in your heart. Thank you for the comment.
Unusual looking bird… looks like a Cormorant
Yea I think you are right. One person suggested darter, which has the nickname of snake bird. They can give a person nightmares 😂
On your next visit, check Sandton, rosebank , Capetown and kruger national park
Now back in America, I just met someone the other day that married a South African that was from a village near Kruger and he highly recommended that park. You are the second person to recommend Sandton so it must be really nice. Thanks so much for your recommendations!
The ibises are often called hardedas
Thanks for that fun fact epic hero banana lol I’m going to be calling them hardedas from now on!
@@SavagesAdventuresthose other black birds are cormorants
Which side of the road is right and by whose standard?
I meant nothing malicious. I should have stated, trying not to drive on the wrong side of the road. Driving on the left side of the road was a very fun first experience for us.
I want to come so bad! But I want to stay! How much does it cost to start a small business please?
No idea 🤷🏽♀️
You are welcome to come, and there are a lot of business opportunities, and the costs differ according to the field that you are interested in, you can come anytime, yes we have problems and we are always fighting to make everyone feel safe in our Country

Americans always over reacting about crime in SA .We always walk the park 24/7 without any fear.
We still went🤷🏽♀️
There are cities in America that are far more dangerous than SA😊
Why do you say driving wrong side of the road
I meant opposite side of the road. This was the first time for us driving on the left
Uthekwane that darker noisy bird...
Thank you so much! I was just thinking about how no one has filled me in on that bird yet
FYI it's not the wrong side of the road it's the left side we keep left, also you are too late because black America is already here...
Ai kahle wena, nonsense..
@reantai, What this moronic comment supposed to mean? White folks have been living in South Africa since the 1600's. If you go to Cape Town and the Western Cape, you would not even know you are in Africa. It is lily white. Only a few black Americans can afford to move to SA. And those black that have moved there soon find out that in SA also they are behind the white folks, economically speaking.
😂😂😂😂...
DURBAN IS THE MOST VALANCES TOWN IN SOUTH AFRICA AM SOUTH AFRICAN
Nice video! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching!
The teens were probably just stoned and messing with you😅
Yea, it was just odd
I strongly disagree with the negative comments about the monkeys. We should be grateful to coexist with wildlife and recognize that they were here first. It's important to acknowledge the impact of human activities, such as pollution and land encroachment, on their habitats. Let's work towards finding a balance between human needs and wildlife conservation.
Regarding the video, I'm disappointed that it doesn't showcase the beauty and diversity of Durban. Umhlanga has so much to offer, and the Arch and Chris Saunders Park is not one of them. I'd love to see more positive representation of our city. Let's focus on promoting respect and appreciation for all living beings and the environment.
Thanks for sharing. We do show umhlanga beach and nature preserve in the next video. We personally loved seeing the monkeys, I just was stating what locals told us about them.
What would be some of your top list things to see in Durban? We do plan on returning so we can try again in the future
Don't forget to visit the interesting squatter settlement at the South end of the Victoria Embankment during your next visit. Burnt trees, acres of litter & random filth as no ablutions available, with stoned illegal immigrants stumbling around through the squalor like zombies. Would make a fantastic dystopian setting for an apocalyptically themed movie!
Thank you so much for visiting my home town Durban, I am glad you had a great time. Please visit again, South Africa has a lot more to offer.
We had the best time and are definitely planning on returning!
Hi. Durbanite here. Did you go to the Durban Botanical Garden?
That was on our list but we ended up running out of time so we will definitely have to see it on our next trip
@@SavagesAdventures please try, it's amazing

LoL you were supposed to film like the city and streets, not just filming animals.

Great video. It's embarrassing to live in a crime ridden country but it's not VERY bad. Tons of positives especially for tourists. You'll definitely love Cape Town. It's very suited for people from first world countries.
The Hadeda ibis is pronounced HAR-DEE-DAR. They are incredibly noisy and raucous and can been an absolute pain in the butt. My dogs hate them eith a passion and have actually caught a few.
Thankfully you are okay, but hopefully you come back ❤
Definitely coming back! We still have so much more to see and do
There are very rich places there and alot of millionaires. There is so much crime in the U.S nowadays. It is embarrassing. And FYI this country America is more dangerous than South Africa, common knowledge look it up.
As an ex South African who has lived in the US for 25 years now you sound like a complete idiot.
No one from Durban ever goes to Roma Restaurant!
I think it’s worth it for the views. Also it was our first revolving restaurant so that was cool. But our next trip we are going to try to focus on local recommendations so if you have some, we would love to try them!

@@SavagesAdventures Driving on the right in a left hand drive car, is just plain wrong. And backward 😂😂😂
Woah woah woah.. at least we aren’t shifting with our left hand 🚗 🫲 ⚙️
@@SavagesAdventuresActually, left hand changes are faster and more efficient. Because the clutch is operated by the left foot. So is actually faster.
Plus driving on the left makes it easier to shake hands with oncoming motorists. And shooting out of window is way easier too.
The benefits are immense.
The reason the Romans rode on the left. As did most nations. The Europeans and Americans swapped over to the right for no other reason other than to be anti British. And in the process f#cked themselves.

Nice Review Except
The Umhlanga Arch may in a viewer / visitors eyes look pleasing but it is the worst building (especially for the climate of Durban).
Even in your video, you can percieve the major winds in the garden. No the architect did not take the Pedestrian Wind Comfort into account and one generally cannot use the garden due to the wind, even on a breezy day.
The glass building generates a heat island in a already hot climate. Again take the garden as an example. You are getting sunburnt from all directions & cannot use the garden optimally.
And lastly just the airconditioning takes up all the (legal) allowance for the energy consumption.
There are must better buildings / public spaces you could have reviewed.
No way I should be expected to have known this information and reviewed a different building lol. It’s still a unique building. It looked like there is something being built in front of the complex as well, do you know what’s going there? I doubt it would do anything for the wind unless it blocks the view as well.
Legal allowance for energy consumption? What the hell is that?
@@petercollingwood522 The National Building Regulations & Standards Act 103/77 limits the maximum energy comsumption per m^2 of every new building in South Africa. This is in the National Building Regulation XA, since 2011.
Now The Umhlanga Arch exceeds this limit with just the HVAC (exluding light, hot water & plug loading)
@@videshboodu8351How about they just get more power stations on line. A bit ridiculous that the country is still operating with no increase since the Apartheid era.
I'd love to know if there was a huge difference between USA and SA? I've heard some Americans choose SA because of how similar it is to the US compared to other countries.
Apologies for that incident. Some people are just stupid.
There really wasn’t too many huge differences but we did notice some. Everywhere we went, stores had the portable touch to pay devices so it made using a credit card so easy. We barely even used the cash we exchanged. We just ended up using it to tip the staff at the hotel and parking attendants. Everywhere we went had security, parking attendants in every parking lot, also all the parking was free! That’s unheard of in any major city in America. The biggest difference though was definitely the pace of life. Americans are always in a hurry, we drink energy drinks everyday, we expect service to be fast. People get pretty impatient in the states. We went to a spar in Umhlanga to restock on energy drinks and the cashier was so nice and was concerned for how tired we must be all the time lol it was a really funny interaction.
@@SavagesAdventures that's incredible to know. And you telling me that the US doesn't have cardless services in all their stores? It's practically becoming useless for us to carry cash. Whenever I have cash I just give it away.
Yeah because of high unemployment, people try to make money in every way possible. Car guards are just people trying to make a quick buck without resorting to crime. Besides a few places, car guards are usually random people who look after your car for change.
Durban is a relaxed place, Cape Town too. Johannesburg is a very high-paced city. Everyone from other cities like to point out how fast we Joburgers are.
We do have tap to pay and everything it’s just not nearly as popular as we saw in Durban. Some places in America don’t even let you use a card unless it’s over a certain dollar amount because credit card companies charge businesses per transaction. Also some places in South Africa don’t even accept cash as all. Some places in America prefer cash because of the transaction charge.
We loved having the peace of mind of parking attendants watching over the car. We always tipped a few rands. Also in the busy streets and parking lots having their help in finding spots was a blessing. In America, you are on your own. We have wasted so much time trying to find parking in big cities and then being charge outrageous prices to park.
Joburgers!! That’s such a fun name!
SA has the best ATM ntw in the world and a very advanced banking system, even cheques like you use in the USA,has been discontinued.
