Excellent work using the castellan as a commissar. The novels featuring commissars CONSTANTLY remind us that the sash is THE badge of office for the commissar, so its omission on the new commissar was pretty annoying.
Great job! And this mini makes a significantly better Commisar than the fairly dull Commisar mini they released, especially with all the customization options in the Castellan kit.
The figure looks fantastic! I like the technique for the black coat and I agree that the gloves look better in the Gal Vorbak Red. Thanks for sharing this and i always look forward to your tutorials.
Funnily enough, I just ordered this miniature last night, to paint him up as a commissar. I am considering filing the front of the cap a little, so as to create the more angular profile of the typical commissar cap. What I'd like to see from GW is a character upgrade sprue set for Astra Militarum characters, commissars, captains, priests, etc. I am next looking at kitbashing a commissar out of one of the Exaction Squad figures.
That should do the trick. There's a slight recess between the trim on the top of the cap and the cap itself, which you should be able to just paint back into place without too much effort.
I really like this Castelan figure and it comes with two peaked cap head variants so I can do a conversion of the Cadian command officer 😊 The Commissar is woeful as a Commissar! Perhaps a junior officer.... Commissars have BIIG outrageous peaked caps, like a 70's Soviet senior commander 😅 Really like the paint job here too.
It's a great little kit, in honesty. I really wanted one for the miniature despite having no use for a Castellan, so I'm lucky my brain eventually ticked over to, "You can paint him how you like..."
Awesome tutorial, as always! I think this conversion really reminds me of Commissar Hark, from the Gaunt's Ghosts novels! Really great work! I think I might have to paint up a Castellan this same way in the future! ~ Wolfbrother Methos
I love this sculpt because its the best way to build Commissar Cain. Just give him his default chainsword and laspistol or do some more plastic surgery to fit the las pistol on another one of his hands, and you have perfect Cain just ready for some tanna tea.
Excellent vid & a fantastic mini! Way better than the current commissar models! I have the event version of the Commissar, which is better, but still not a true commissar - no sash etc....As usual though, your painting is on point & your explanations 10/10.
I decided to use German Grey instead of Black Templar because I find Contrast to be a bit too finicky for me! It still turned out quite similar to yours! Great video!
The "Commissar's Duty" event mini is a much more interesting looking commissar, shame he's limited edition, and scalpers have him going for 100-200 USD. Classic GW. Either way, great job on the paintwork!
Well done, black coats are (in)famous for highlights being or too white or not, generally I use black grey then Cold grey, but drybrushing before them It's always standard. I hope to see the others men in the squad, with some command troops.
Looks good! When getting to the base though it made me wonder if you aim the (cheap makeup) drybrush in one of the lighter brown texture paint if it would behave the same as the one you used.
I really like this, tempted to try it on the krieg killteam instead. Also, random note, i dont think ive ever seen you paint the 4 chaos demons, maybe something to do in the future :D
I've done Plaguebearers, but that's about as close as any more daemons are gonna get. I don't much like any of the miniatures; it's a pricey box when I barely want one out of each. 😅
Nice work and always enjoy your tutorials. I have to suggest though that the plasma coil is the wrong way around. The white heat should be in the bottom/middle of the gun and the cooler blue colours at the edges, like dark highlights. Juan Hidalgo did some plasma gun videos recently and can't unsee that the standard way now looks weird.
Cadian Castelan makes a better commissar than the new commissar. The new one feels so static compared to literally every other commissar, even the old metal ones had more gusto to their pose than the new one
I hate the new Commissar.. He needs at the very least to tighten his belt a bit to lose the Red Bull can shape that guys with too much midsection get when they wear a crisp greatcoat. Otherwise, overall, you're very correct in that he just doesn't have the 'look' of a 40k Prefectus.. This boy is a massive step up.
Nope. Two layers, just a little water in the paint, and don't overload your brush as you're applying it. Let the first layer dry *thoroughly* before trying to throw a second on top and you're golden.

Right? The Castellan box at least has all the weapons options available to a Commissar! 😅

Totally agree with you about the new commissar miniature 😕
This one is top tier. You fixed exactly what was wrong with the "Other" commissar...
Thank you , Troy .
My Commisar's are 25mm white metal , and I dont own any Contrast paints , But still some hints there for me . 🙂

That's a cracking paint job Sir!
That’s awesome love the colour choices

I really do like the recipe for black leather. Thanks a lot!
Wow! This paint job really makes that mini sing! 😃

Incredibly cool model. Great job 👍🏻

Great video, ironically I just bought that same figure yesterday.
Great job! Honestly makes me tempted to try and find something to paint black...
that is one cool take on a commissar. still sad we Lost Yarrick, he was my favorite named Commissar
Haha, now you need to paint the new commissar model as the castellan.
But that'd mean buying one of those new guys... 😭
EXCELLENT as always!!
good looking scheme mate, well done!
I’m impressed Sonic, excellent job. You could do a head swap with the commissar head on this model for a future project if you choose to revisit
I could, and it's definitely worth considering, but I've reached seven painted Commissars... I'm not sure I need *another* one for a while! 😂

Aye this is a lovely guide to painting it. Thank you

Nice and clean

Also lacks a sash though.
The actual commisar loks more like a officer and the officer looks more like a commisar

Lovely work!
What would you do different to do a glossy black leather coat rather than a black cloth coat?

@@SonicSledgehammerStudio thats super fair! Was just a random observation! :D

Great now i need two more Castellans so i can run one as a Commissar and another to run with my Castellan i git already.
great video, can you please make a video on how to easily paint late roman/early byzantine miniatures?
Is the combo (Agrax/lamin) wash less glossy than the new Agrax by its self?
Yes, but the finish of the shades don't matter all that much since I matt varnish the miniature anyway.
My wallet: “I’m tired, boss.”

Your TMMs look very smooth. Do you just thin with water and use many very thin layers?
Nope. Two layers, just a little water in the paint, and don't overload your brush as you're applying it. Let the first layer dry *thoroughly* before trying to throw a second on top and you're golden.
Awesome, thank you. I'll give this a shot while painting the spiky bits on my Seraphon
Being honest the only reason I have the updated commisar is because I was short one for a list
Awsome! 😍
Why does every modern GW model have to be standing on a rock?
