Love John Martyn. The effect was an Echoplex machine which was basically a tape machine that looped what John played in real time and added a delay to what came back. Plus you could make adjustments so the delayed sound is repeated again and again giving it that reverby echo. They didn't show his feet in this clip but he usually had an array of pedals on the go.
