I think the main issue with this game is that we've been spoiled graphically. The game is pretty good but aesthetically it looks unfinished. Honestly, I like the art style of the bachelors Hm than in SoS but the way they look in-game feels kind of off or unfinished for the lack of a better word. If this game came out in the 90s/ early 00s then it would probably be better received.

One thing I like about One World so far is that it offers a system in which tools do not take up space in the inventory and are automatically used when the player presses a button next to a space. Same goes for seeds, which can be cycled between after pressing the button.
This makes farming very simple and fast to accomplish and improves the gameplay flow of farming, mining, and foraging.

maybe i'm a bit spoiled but its still really hard for me to overlook the visuals in this game. Its a lot better- sure. But still not what i like. I can kind of say that for SoS as well- it just feels a bit too simple sometimes but it stands out more here in this studio. Character sprites have never really "moved" much but i miss 2d art since its at least easier to push strong emotions. the 3d stuff can do it okay but it feels flat to me sometimes. But i'm glad they are ironing out other issues like the actual gameplay itself. Not sure i'll get this one BUT i hope they are learning to make better and better games, because i do love me some farming games.

My first farming game was Story of Seasons: Mineral town on switch. I loved it and I've been looking forward to the new game. I heard about marvelous and natsume's history and I started to dislike Natsume's Harvest moon because it doesn't look like Story of Seasons. Watching the trailers I would constantly compare the two but I thought about it and I understand now Natsume's is trying to make their own gaming experience. Sos didn't do a worldwide release (rude asf lol) so I can't get it until the end of the month so I ordered this game because I needed to actually play it for myself before jumping the bandwagon with my pitchfork. I played for hours last night until the sun rose & my husband's alarm went off and I was like where did the time go?! 😱.
With no spoilers i will say my opinion on it so far. Natsume made a mistake continuing to carry a name that already had a loyal fans. It was a short play, doomed from the start. They simply weren't at marvelous level yet but that doesn't mean they can't be. They weren't ready to carry on that name. No matter what they do people would harshly criticize them using the standard marvelous set for the series. They were shoes they couldn't fit in yet and no one walks well in oversized shoes. No other farming sim gets the level of hate they do and it would be best to start a new with a fresh name. Your games are deserving of their legacy don't you think?
As for the actual game I found it to be quite fun if im being honest. I was surprised. I mindfully stopped comparing it to Sos and judged it as its own experience as I did with stardew. The world needs some more vibrance but I did find myself not wanting to move on to the next town yet because I was just having some much fun farming i didnt feel rushed to move forward. I love the game play mechanics they've used for tools. No longer do I have to worry about trying to milk air and waste my precious stamina (im not dissing Sos im just pointing out an improvement. I love sos). I loved that it automatically uses the tool needed for that task and I don't have to worry about accidentally killing a crop before harvest. I do enjoy the dialog and ive only gotten to the first major town. It is simple in some good ways and doesn't overcomplicate simple tasks. My greatest compliment to marvelous is that I am really excited about the fact that getting someone to fall in love with you isn't as simple as handing them an egg every day. You must complete certain tasks that require some effort. Thats more realistic and also fun to reach the goals.
My biggest complaint is that same sex marriage should have been a basic thing in a game that has romance as a big part of it. Im straight and married to my husband who I adore but I was actually very sad that I couldn't romance every character and get to see their dialog (its what I love most) and yes I could replay as a man but heck, I like looking like myself in the game as it makes me more immersed. I can only imagine if I was apart of the LGBT community that I would feel more than disappointed but also forgotten/not important. They said they cut it because of time restraints & covid, etc but I'm letting you know that people would rather wait for a game and have the development team given proper time to create the best experience they can. A rushed game will never be that good but a delayed one may eventually be groundbreaking. Please take your time on your next project. That being said for those of you who don't have to choose between one or the other I would recommend trying it out. I used gamefly and it arrived quickly. I also bought the game on gamestop but their Shipping is slow atm. I'm still looking forward to SoS but I'm allowed to enjoy both games 🎮 💙

Emily you are trying to explain something that you can’t speak on when it comes to Natsume, based on the fact that you are new to the series. Natsume has been cash grabbing the HARVEST MOON name for almost a decade now (or longer) long time fans know that Marvelous will never live up to that potential because they simply have been dragging Harvest Moons name through the mud with each game/spin-off, then on top of that they put a crap ton of micro transactions in their app games. They only care about money money money. Stop giving them your money, only support Story Of Seasons games.

Emily, don't pay attention to the comment above. I agree with you. They should play their own cards with their own title and I guess they will be less criticised and even more appreciated. Hope you enjoy both games when SOS is released and, as a suggestion, try the previous games from 3DS or DS consoles or even previous consoles (Wii, GBA, GCN...) if it's possible for you. You're not regreting that!

    • @Kalvinjj
      @Kalvinjj 3 роки тому

100% agreed on the name hurting them more than helping get attention. As I always say, they do have something interesting, they could have something good, but they set their own bar too high. And yeah I'm a fan since Back to Nature so nothing to do with being new and shit. Even Light of Hope was (is) quite fun and all, not minding the crappy graphics and occasional waiting game when you need materials like freaking silky donkey fur to get married, cause hey, you just need that specific material that needs you to have the specific animal that takes ages to grow up and give you it's fur.... thank you.... Also the extensive farming felt kinda overwhelming to me instead, and just makes me not care enough about it, I can never know what I had planted (thanks to no farm map...) but I can certainly see it being a plus for others.
In therms of no gay marriage: it really is a buzzkill for me. I'm not gay/lesbian or anything (yo typical cis white male scum and all the crap the crazy extremists hate) but I've always liked cute characters, I love playing with the cute girl characters in Friends of Mineral Town, cause, hey, I can marry the cute girls that I want to marry. I don't care about the boys, it feels awkward hitting on one, and that's what I would have to do OR not marry if I wanna play the cute girl here. Only option: play with the guy I don't care. Like, meh I've been doing it until Friends of Mineral Town remake, but still dumb and feels downgraded not being able now. The worst part is that it's such a simple thing to add, a handful of dialogues changed, and the rest just deal with the events as if you can access both friend and lover ones, done. Can't be too hard, it's definitely some choice to not hurt the strict traditional families ideas that could possibly hurt sales (like, as if that would really reduce sales...). Hopes for an update that reverses it, if the ones that buy it/intend to buy care enough.

It seems to me that the game's proportions are all wrong and that's part of why it looks so bad. Even inside the buildings, there are huge floor areas but teeny tiny furniture items. The colors are also way too bright. This game doesn't seem good to me at all, but they did have some neat ideals I'd love to see SoS use, like the different climates and needing certain recipes to be able to go to like hot or cold areas kind of like LoZ Breath of the Wild. And I love the ideal of planting crops in different places/ways and having different variations pop up. I don't like the pocket farm ideal, I think it would be more fun and realistic to take the approach they had in Harvest Moon Tale of Two towns and let you move from farm to farm in different climates and town locations, upgrading and farming each one as you play. Maybe even having each farm only able to hold certain farm animals, like one farm can hold chickens another cows another bees another sheep, alpacas, ect. Anyway that's just my thoughts.

I think the problem is Natsume tries to hard to copy harvest moon because it was once the biggest farm sim name. But since recent times many farm sim games arise, and stardew took the throne. Even SoS tries to copy it (and sadly failed with POoT). That should be a chance for Natsume to create brand new farm sim game, as right now I don't think anyone is falling for the HM name anymore, but new people came from stardew instead bc they want more farm sims. If Natsume don't step up their game, they will just fall into obscurity as right now many new farm sims are coming, and more promising. Even SoS is currently struggling with their identity, it's actually a great time to get solid stance in the market.

There are much better options in the harvest moon series if you have older systems. Before the story of seasons / harvest moon split, the games were great. If you have a wii there are some great ones for gamecube and wii. I started on the snes with the first game too but my favorite is actually HM 64 that is a direct sequel to it. Though HM a wonderful life and magical melody for game cube were great too. And hm animal parade for the wii. HM friends of mineral town for the GBA is excellent as well and much better than the story of seasons remake that came out last year.

I think my biggest problem that I keep seeing through reviews is the framerate drops and incredible lack of space to move. Like... for an "Open World" game they laid it out like a Pokemon game from the early 2000's and even those had wider paths. Plus there should never /ever/ be framerate drops like that on a Console. That's the entire point of a gaming system, you buy the thing pre-put-together and it runs, especially on a game that got delayed like this one. Seriously, unless it's on a PC (because everyone's computers are different and you can't really plan for that) or running on Flash we shouldn't be seeing lag spikes or frame drops.
The game seems claustrophobic and the lack of named meaningful characters is off-putting... Also seems like the only reliable way to farm is to have animals.
The more I look into this the more it seems like an RPG with Farming in it than a Farming Sim with RPG in it... maybe that's why I'm confused.
Oh well thank you for the review! I'll probably buy it anyway out of curiosity and sadism because I WANNA KNOOOOW.
And the horses look nicer than the last game. :D

I would like to buy this game (no money yet lol); however, I still think this lacked of development time (you could see some unfinished animations, characters that dissapear and appear, and that horse riding animation? Gosh) I like Harvest Moon, I'm still playing Light of Hope because I liked it. And I'm willing to give One World an opportunity, but I recognize that some stuff should have to be fixed before have launched the game :

I think that by now they should always have an option that let’s you skip the really basic things in games, NOT get rid of it completely since it could lock out the younger generation for which it might be their first, but at least give people the option. Like yes game, I know you walk by tilting the left stick, thanks.
But I’ve noticed that a lot of people are clueless about things that you can easily figure out by going trough menus so I’m guessing they never had to do that either. The go in without much of anything at all gaming experience that I grew up with in random games on dad’s computer. We didn’t really get our own games for a very long time so it was a lot of just figure it out, and we’d figure out things that dad missed 😂 but then again, he had work, we just had primary school 🤷‍♀️
Still, most people have more options these days so if they don’t understand how to play a game they’re not going to try to figure it out on their own, while others don’t want to be forced to learn how to walk for the ten thousandth time. Have you played a game before or do you need help? That shouldn’t be the hardest thing in the world to put in since it also makes starting a new save extra painful. Have an in game manual in the options menu that you can check if you DO get stuck on something. It’s not rocket science.

Honestly it is really hard to find a non biased opinion about this game as people see the name Natsume and they automatically assume bad. Though i will also say that people are way too hard on this game about the graphics when this is better than the PS1/PS2/N64 graphics literally if anything it is Wii graphics level or even with the cell shading Wii U era like Wind waker as in Tree of tranquility/animal parade which still looks better than blocky polygons of the graphics of PS1/PS2/N64. Like they have their Nostalgia googles on way to tight if they honestly think these graphics are bad at all or even comparable to the graphics of old systems that was honestly worse. Now i would understand if people would say that they just don't like the cell shading in general thats fine but the fact that they have the balls to say that the graphics are worse than some shitty old console thats not fine. Granted i do know that those consoles were marvels of their own with good games but a lot of those games had bad graphics objectively speaking and if you were to say "That is just because of the hardware limitation of the time" then thats just being blinded by nostalgia as objectively this game has better graphics since the times passed and is on better hardware
Sorry for the foul language but just seeing people say that the graphics are bad like that and that the inferior hardware is better just ticks me off as they can just say that the graphics don't do it for them and not just say that it is bad outright or use it as a negative talking point when talking about the game. Like i honestly feel that people are nitpicking just looking for reasons to hate the game and call it a terrible atrocity when in fact it is a perfectly fine game granted when seen as a standalone a perfectly above average one that would be better if they patch all the lag out and fix some other minor issues but it is still a fine game that does not deserve all of the hate it is getting like sure it is a Natsume game but come on the nitpicking and hate is just too much and for a Natsume game you have to admit that it is actually pretty good

So it's got the same farming concept of Light of Hope (endless hordes of plant varieties) but you get seeds slightly differently. One thing I liked a lot in Light of Hope was that sense of having a purpose, a mission to accomplish, dunno if One World has that tho, but wins in graphics easily thankfully (the bar was set low tho let's be frank). By the way can you move the camera further? Feels too cramped specially for mining on that angle, also the same mine as Light of Hope... Not a bad thing just funny.
From what I've read around, no same sex marriage... That's a big party pooper for me that loves just playing with the cute girl character and marry the cute girls - gotta maximize the cuteness on screen, if I'm to stare at it for so long. Long live that option in Pioneers of Olive Town! Tho granted Story of Seasons is always on a different league. I've always felt that this name they cling so much to isn't making them much good, rather just setting the bar too high for themselves.

They made the graphics sound worse than they are and didn’t go into those interesting features like you did! Thanks for this.

I can't believe that I'm saying this, but One World does actually not look and sound as terrible as I anticipated after seeing the very first trailer/footage last year. To be honest, I didn't have very high hopes for the game and I will still not buy it for the full price. For that, it is not graphically appealing enough to me. However, I will seriously think about buying the game when it is on sale.
If Natsume puts some serious effort into upgrading their overworld graphics, they might have a real chance of getting a good reputation in the farming sim fandom. Hopefully, they will take the feedback they will receive for One World and improve even more in the future. I'm honestly looking forward to that.

The animations look stiff, NPCS are still boring because they dont really interact with one another or their environments in an immersive way, there are hoards of nameless NPCS, the towns are boring because they all serve a similar purpose but with a change in biome, finding seeds is tedious despite it being a core mechanic, the load times is DISGUSTING for how modern this game is supposed to be (on switch at least), the world might be a large open world, but its mostly empty space with sprites scattered throughout it. The game isn't Light of Hope levels of bad, only mediocre in comparison to other farming sim games and I don't think you should be praising Natsume for mediocrity.

They have it for switch for $ 49.99. Recognize some things in One world that are in some of their other games like the animals, how they move and how the character has to clean up their waste in Skytree Village and the characters themselves seem to run like the characters in HM ANB. Really like HM ANB a lot, and Skytree Village is pretty decent too so might look into this one.
Setting up a farm on a beach, and being able to go everywhere sounds like heaven to me.
Going to keep an eye out for reviews.
    www.nintendo.com/games/detail/harvest-moon-one-world-switch/
Skytree Village has crop mutations and after you unlock it you can change the terrain, you have to to get to the underground lord who is in the mine and its blocked by a huge rock, but you can create new water ways kind of like acnh.
I don't like that fishing. Fishing in their other games is a whole lot better. Even HM TOTT fishing is better than that.
What about cooking ? Is there cooking in this game ? They have cooking in their other games.

The main issues I have are the crashes and glitches. Like I played FF7 and 8 and left it on for almost a FULL whole day on the PS1 but I can't play Harvest moon One world for too long or it will crash/kill the game on a modern console? Because it's lacking memory? And the random glitches with the people disappearing and never coming back, etc. annoying. But despite that, I'm still playing it.

  • @Pscyon

I thought this would basically be Light of Hope 2.... and yes, it seems to basically be Light of Hope 2. And while I like Light of Hope, it's far from the best HM ever and it's inferior to say Stardew Valley. The whole "Push A to do everything", while certainly a convenient streamlining, is not a terribly fun one and I'd say it's a negative point rather than a positive one. I see the terrible "shoebox" mines are back too.
That said, I agree that One World doesn't seem to be bad. And yeah, the first half hour of the game doesn't sell it (just saw another 36 minute gameplay video here), so this review certainly puts the game in a lot better light. Only picking up one farming game this month, and it's still Olive Town, but One World is definitely still on the list and this review bumped up its priority.
