Cup feeding a newborn

  • When breastfeeding is a struggle, a cup is a great alternative to bottle feeding to help get baby back to the breast. Watching baby’s cues are essential. You’re not pouring the milk into baby’s mouth, you’re giving baby control over drinking.
Breast and bottle feeding work completely different. A baby at the breast used mostly muscles of the tongue and jaw to express milk while a baby uses more cheek and lip muscles to move milk from a bottle. Both positive and negative pressure are needed to express milk from the breast. The back of the tongue creates a vacuum in the mouth as it pumps up and down to draw milk in via negative pressure while the front of the tongue compresses the breast to help push milk out. Bottle feeding uses mostly positive pressure from compressing the bottle nipple. It is an easier process to move milk from a bottle than the breast. A cup uses the same muscles as the breast. Using a cup actually promotes breastfeeding and is a great alternative to supplementing baby when breastfeeding is the goal.

I'm a retired GP (in my early days) and I've never learned this. I've never had children myself, however, I will be checking with my med school and residency program to learn if their students/residents in FP take lactation classes. I could have been immediate help to new parents plus enrolling them in classes. So many clues I was unaware of that didn't need overkill in meds, tests, or even frustration with parents (or family). Thank you.

Actually I am annoyed at seeing nurses w a new baby. All these things should be done by the mother. Nurse needs to hand the baby over to the mother who birthed him and step back. Grrr

For anyone concerned, this method works WITH the baby’s natural instincts and prepares the baby to breastfeed ❤
In many instances it better mimics breastfeeding than bottle feeding does (unless you do paced-bottle feeding ), because the baby does not have to keep up with the flow of a bottle that’s tipped up so it flows regardless of the baby sucks or not. When done correctly, it DOES NOT cause the baby to aspirate or choke the baby. With this method, you are NOT to POUR the milk in, and the baby is to never be fed lying down

It’s a great way to feed a baby keeping with their natural reflexes and protective of breastfeeding as sucking milk from a bottle (unless pace bottlefed) can be very different and require a shallow latch

There’s a valid reason bottle tears are like they are. Because they resemble a natural way to feed a baby. Giving a cup at newborn is wrong and will encourage choking.

She took to the cup without a problem and later that night when my daughter went to breastfeed she refused and again the cup worked for her. In the morning she woke up with a fever and chicken pox. Poor thing was not feeling well and didn’t want the breast or a bottle but again the cup worked

That was so cute! I just thought before there were baby bottles that Mothers always breast-fed their babies. But that makes really good sense to feed them that way! I wish I had of known that 45 years ago! My son wasn’t breast fed, he weighed 10 pounds when he was born! When he was 4 months old the doctor put him in the hospital! He would have his bottle then he had diarrhea & what didn’t come out one end…came out the other end!! This was after every bottle! He lost down to a little over 7 pounds in a matter of weeks! I was afraid I would lose him!! They ran lots of tests on him and told me there was a muscle in his stomach that when he had his bottle it would push up and cause him to throw up, or fall down and cause him to have diarrhea or most of the time it would do both!! They worked with him trying different kinds of formula and finally told me to place him in an infant seat (we didn’t have car seats back then for babies) when I gave him his bottle and tie it down in his bed so he wouldn’t fall out of it during nap time or nighttime! After doing this for 4 or 5 months straight, I could then lay him down in his bed. But from then on I always fed him while he was sitting up!!
    Thank you!

I am an Occupational Therapist and I have been doing feeding therapy for over 20 years and I do love the way you teach the family to observe the babies cues as that is so important but, if a baby is having trouble with breast and/or bottle feeding do you ever refer to a feeding therapist?

The family made a choice not to use a bottle as cupfeeding is more traditional and uses the same muscles as breastfeeding and this was going to be temporary.

Thank you! So much valuable information in this video. Did breastfeeding get going without the tongue release, or it was done as well. I like to see how the cup feeding was helping the baby move his tongue like he needs to move the tongue during breastfeeding. Very helpful. New CLC here and I am a CranioSacral Therapist. Please keep the videos coming. :)

Bottles use different muscles than the breast. Cup feeding uses the same muscles as breastfeeding and promote better feeding in general. This is based on evidence based research.

It can help depending on why baby is choking. I would try the evenflo balance with the slow flow nipple or the pigeon super slow flow nipples as options for bottle feeding.
