as a van dweller in the desert and forests i’m very familiar with this problem. don’t feel bad for them. it’s you or them. do what you gotta do.
i would also suggest that maybe you should wear a mask when you are pulling apart the middens. i see a lot of dust flying up. you don’t want that stuff in your lungs.

I tried EVERYTHING humane for over a year and finally resorted to peanut butter and baking soda (mix a cup of each together to form a paste), and it totally worked. Literally just throw balls of paste into the nest, it's not toxic to anything else 😁👍

Just to clarify in case anyone else is wondering or concerned, it's not that baking soda is toxic to rats and mice. They can't burp, so when the baking soda hits the acid in their stomach it creates gas and they have no way of releasing it and the eventually die.

Mice, rats and gnats have been exceptionally numerous this year in New Mexico. We have found that the mice and rats are really attracted to white bread in the traps.

An idea I got from friends who had farms growing up in Idaho: Mix dry oats with dry quickcrete concrete mix and place bowls of it around the property. Mice and rats love it, but it dries them out from the inside and kills them without chemicals. Just an idea, anyway. Really cool bucket idea you used, too!

Very informative video. Thanks for sharing your experience. As mentioned in other comments, I do think it would be advisable to wear a mask or respirator when dismantling and disposing of those middens. Heaven only knows what's in that dust and what it could do to your lungs and sinuses.

I’ve done some mouse, rat and skunk trapping. I’ve gotten better at it though experience. Common rats are the toughest ones to outsmart. If you keep at it and learn from your experience you will get better at it. It’s a continuous process. I don’t think you can ever “win” but you can definitely turn the tide in your favor. People who might criticize have probably never had to deal with the challenges of living with varmints. Best wishes and good luck!!! Thanks for the video Nate and Shannon!

You buy a package of Corn bread mix. If you can find it but if not it's ok.
You mix equal amounts of, corn bread mix with
      Baking soda. It is deadly
      For rodents but safe for
Everything else like birds, cats, dogs, etc!
      It works! Equal parts!
Baking Soda And Corn bread Mix! Place containers of this mix every where! Only kills
Rodents! Causes a problem with there breathing! Can't breath!!!

I am a pest management pro…I would place rodent bait stations around all the buildings. Rodenticide will be locked inside to keep non target animals from eating it. I would also get bait stations that the snap traps sit inside to keep birds from being killed. You will need to check the bait stations frequently to replace rodenticide but you should see that taper off once you gain control of the rodent population.

    • @botcat
      @botcat Рік тому +1

The rat holes may completely catch fire, so use good judgement.

I live in my rv next to a farm field part of the year and have lots of mice. I use a bucket without the lid and put peanut butter inside just out of reach and get mice all the time. I had to make a screen cover for the whole bucket to keep other animals from knocking it over. I also use mouse X that helps to thin them out. It’s not a poison and won’t hurt other animals. I also have to cover that. I also use mouse traps where animals can’t get into them. Good luck.

I grew up on a farm and rats mainly got into feeders. They would borrow under the feeders and have babies. I learned that they can have up to 12 babies at a time at least 6 times a year. They would eat at least 7 times their body weight every 3 months. It was costly so we had 2 big German Shepherds and my dad would go under the feeder lift it up and the rats would run out and the shepherds would kill them so fast. They would miss one or two. I worked in a lab where they raised rats, mice, rabbits the rats and mice would pop out a litter about every month or so. I don’t want to say what happen to the babies but I quit after about 6 months because of it. It just got to me after a while with all the killing. 😢

We live in our RV and had the same problem with mice. I read that having Irish Spring soap in the house might deter them. I cut up small pieces and put them in open sandwich bags and have them all over the RV. We haven't had a problem since, don't know if that's just a coincidence. It was a cheap and easy way to start since we can't really use traps inside.

The rodent's are not getting smarter. You've simply caught and disposed of wisely the ones that called the area you put in the traps 'home ground'. Move your traps to different spots! See if you then catch some different ones on their home grounds. And then leave some permanently set around your home. You'll catch the ones trying to set up your houses as their territory this way.

When the rats get used to the spring tapes, do the ol’ switchero. Bait em every day but don’t set em for several nights and then bait them and set em to give ‘em a lill surprise 😉
Edit: I’ve not tried this but a hose from the exhaust and poke the other end into the midden and run the engine for a while, and see if they pack their bags. Might stop the babies from growing up?

Cayenne pepper Sprinkle all over your home perimeter, where you park. Rope lights along home base, under cars. They hate pepper, and light. Bucket of water with a ramp up to it...they fall in and drown.gross but it works. Clear up piles where they can nest. Wood piles off the ground. And finally...get a couple cats. You can do an outside house for them, and when you travel I am sure your neighbors would love to borrow them.

Have you ever fed the birds right outside your property? It’s a good way to try to draw mice and rats. They don’t care about cats which is why cats love to munch on them. It’s not your mouse traps keeping them away, it’s the fact that you’re not attracting them. There are about four feral and stray cats that live around my house and we get frequented by mice and rats. We feed the birds outside. :)

The problem is you think you have time. The hours have a way of turning into days, the days into weeks, the weeks into years, and the years into a lifetime.
How different would your life and memories be today ( or ten years later) if you had done that ? I am a 71 year old guy from Albuquerque NM - believe me twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So go out be bold and you enjoy life to the fullest !

I've heard packrats don't like light, and people put string lights under their cars to keep the rats away. But I've seen them out during the day so that must be poppycock. I get annoyed when my neighbors kill snakes because they're free pest control.

Get a terrier , a cat , and a live trap that you activate at night and empty daily . You need to get rid of them . They will attract snakes , and carry hunna ( don't know if it's spelled correctly ) among other disease . Cross contamination etc . Do not feel bad at all it is a matter of health and safety .

You’re literally using the Internet to make a comment and you can’t do a tiny quick little research. Lahazahay. 😅

It will work for the stupid rats, however the smarter ones will learn from the mistakes of the stupid ones!

welp. i gotta swamp and there are critters everywhere. traps will do nothin for ya. you hafta setup cameras and dust down some flour (to see their footsteps) to see where they're goin. and wherever they go... SHEET METAL. don't let em in. you have no choice but to turn your house into a fortress. and yeah cats are dumb. coyotes do more than they'll do.

Get a pellet rifle with a night vision scope and go to town. Leave the dead ones around the edges of the property to attract predators.

The rodents are very very resourceful and stinky. Inn b live in the desert. They would make a nest in my bbq or dig a hole and Ho get my dogs poo and make a nest under my plants. I bought live traps and captured and relocated them. Over and over. Fake snakes didn’t work. Owls. Nope. Eventually the only thing that works is finding them a place that they like more than my yard. Someone else’s yard
