Not really. Scientists have documented many occasions all over the world of humpbacks ramming, slapping, and raking orcas. Such injuries raise the risk of infection and injury, so orcas are understandably wary of humpbacks... Google it up, I just did. Fully grown humpbacks are much bigger and stronger than orcas, and therefore, a formidable opponent
Killer whales are the apex predators of the water, but that's purely because they are highly intelligent in the way they hunt within groups; not because of their prowess as individual hunters. They would not be what they are if they only hunted as individuals like other predators do (like great whites, for instance). Many things become powerful in groups. Killer whales are simply intelligent enough to know they are invincible in numbers because other animals don't do the same. If great whites hunted in numbers, or if humpbacks were aggressive and hunted things larger than plankton, killer whales would be in trouble. As it is, great whites hunt alone, and humpbacks (and other giant whales) are gentile giants that are also often alone and only feed on small creatures. I'd consider killer whales lucky.
Well, that's what makes this more impressive. Despite sometimes being prey of killer whales, they engaged the killer whales in this manner. This is because humpbacks have evolved to recognize killer whales as a threat. Humpbacks are extremely intelligent in their own right, and know that they can sometimes use their size to their advantage. Very impressive.
the killer whales would've killed the seal, thereby stopping it from bossibly feeding it's fam so I don't see your logic here. the humpbacks were just protecting animals that can't protect themselves.
Killer whales kill humpbacks and their calves. It's in their best interest to confront killer whales and take food out of their mouths. They see killer whales as adversaries. Sorry, but killer whales definitely have it coming anytime this happens, because they do far more to humpbacks than the reverse.
