My fish look like they are flying in mid-air. If you follow Kev's advice (he'll send you the guide he wrote on the subject), you too can have the crystal clear water you've always wanted. I’m now going to take a large s-once filter from one of the five tanks and put it in the cloudy water tank, I’m confident this with do the trick, plus I have turned off the lights and stopped feeding my mbuna tank for a couple of days. Thanks again for your advice. Best regards.

    Bro, good video man. Direct, straight-forward and to the point - no fluff. I like that. I also like that you are not like other douchy fishtubers who peddle expensive stuff for sponsorships, more views and likes. Can't stand those guys. They are the reason why the hobby is getting super overpriced. No need to get all that ridiculous ADA crap for tons of dollars. Could you believe a small roll of ADA branded nylon string for tying moss to rocks costs $38? You could get those for a buck at a fishing gear shop. Also not enough people recommend generic polyfil. They recommend poly-filter instead. But those polyfilter costs like $20 for a small and $78 for a large. Damn those guys with their kessil and twinstar sponsorships lol. Much respect to you for not trying to create that fake reality that fishkeeping need to cost thousands of dollars and are meant for the elites.

    Kev gets in there with that scrub wand and goes to town, I opt for a mag float and dry hands😂!. A great way to cycle a new tank is to set it all up and then use that tank to clean your sponge filter(s). I squeeze out the sponge filters and rinse all the mulm out of them into the new tank. The filter in the new tank cleans up the water and all that bacteria are now right in the new filter where they can grow out. I give the tank a shot of ammonia and let it go. On my 90 gallon I keep 18 yellow labs. I use an fx4 ,magniflow 360 and a small Hygger sponge filter. You can’t even tell I have water in the tank. Sponge filters are overlooked gems in the aquarium world. People who have never used one can’t begin to know just how well they work until they do. Very good advice for anyone having water quality issues.

      Awesome, very easy to read understand and apply. Covers all basis and very informative. I very seldom struggle with cloudy water anymore but i like to still refresh myself with knowledge and can attest that cloudy water is usually our own doing, too much overfeeding or too much cleaning are, in my experience the only culprits to cloudy water other than setting a new tank and the bacteria bloom that comes with that but even with that leave it alone throw in some prime every 48hrs and some stability, both products of seachem everyday for 7 consecutive days and some polyfil and it will clear in usually 7-10 days. I aldo love to use seachem purigen in all my tanks at all times. Id post videos but as a stay at home dad with a very young boy its difficult to find the time lol

    i love your tutorials so thank you for those. I love fancy goldfish and have two tanks - I have 2 x 15cm black moors in one tank and 2 small orandas and a ryukin in the other tank. I am struggling with ammonia spikes and unstable ph on occasions and water that is not crystal clear. I do everything that i supposed to ie: water changes, maintenance of filters but never on water change day. I monitor all perameters regularly. I am suspecting that i am guilty of overfeeding my fish - i cant resist the way they beg for it. Either that or my filters are not doing their job. I use a Seachem HOB and I also have Aqua One filters that attach to inside the tank. I also make sure that I have the 3 types of media and I use Seachem products such as: Prime, Stability, Equilibrium (tank water) and Purigen when needed. Any tips and advice is greatly appreciated.
    What are the most efficient filters for my grubby goldfish and how much should I feed them?????

I have been struggling with nitrate and ammonia spikes. I did 2 water changes and cleaned the substrate thoroughly. I lost 6 guppies before this. I have a filter that came with the tank and also bought a rock bubbler. Do I need a bigger filter for the aquarium? I want to add more panda's and guppies to fill out the schools again.

    I followed your advice for my first cichlid tank and it is running like a charm. I just have one question for you though. I have a 65 gallon with a hang on back rated for a 90 gallon as well as a sponge rated for a 75, is that enough filtration? I have six cichlids in there now but will be adding more soon.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  4 роки тому +3

      andrew brown Glad to hear that!! 👏 Usually these filter company ratings are far off. They rate their filters empty with no media in them. Once you add sponges and bio-media and anything else the flow is greatly reduced. If it’s rated for 90 gallons consider it half that. So I’d say upgrade your HOB, The sponge filter is a perfect size but I consider those complimentary to a good HOB or canister. Especially when keeping Cichlids that grow quick and poop a lot.

    Hey Kev, great vid 👍
    Just one question though; how high would you recommend you place the canister filter intake above the substrate? I have fine Caribsea Aragonite. I've done everything in your video and have powerful filtration, but I am still getting a lot of fine dust in the water column. This isn't a new tank, so the only thing I can think of is that it must be ultra fine sand being sucked up the intake. Mine is 2" above the substrate. Is this too low?
    Thanks.

    • @KaveManAquatics
      @KaveManAquatics  2 роки тому +1

      if sand gets into the filter it hardly ever makes it all the way through and back out. You'll find most of it in the bottom of your filter when its cleaning time. It could just be the water movement in your tank lifting up the fine sand. I've had to replace a very fine sand once myself for the same reason.
      I would suggest raising your intake, but if the sand is floating in the column, doesnt really matter where the intake is. Unfortunately you may have to replace that fine sand.

  • @boharrysmith3842
    @boharrysmith3842 Рік тому

    I never do water change of a 75 gallon tank but replace the water due to evaporation (open top tank - the tank is half filled with 10 of 2.5 Hans discus). I don't use any type of filters. Add tank mates like cardinal tetras and Sterbai Cory catfish to clean up leftover. Use wave makers and air pump. Have plenty of emersed plants (put the root part into a glass jar) to absorb phosphate from the frozen food. Place the jars inside plastic pots filled with aquarium gravel. Use Fluval 3.0 LED plant light.
    Daily: Put a capful of Seachem Prime (neutralize the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate but still foods for the plants and beneficial bacteria), a pinch of baking soda (keeping the PH stable due to the frozen food from Hans) into the tank.
    When replacing the water, put a teaspoon of API Algaefix in the tank to keep the water clear. Used 1/2 a teaspoon at the beginning. Use a net to scoop out whatever I don't want to look at.

    With regards to the polyfil.....how often would you change it, and it's going to be full of beneficial bacteria, so when you change it are you causing a big reduction of beneficial bacteria. I understand that it is everywhere, on your rocks, driftwood, glass, basically everything in the tank. Is the premise that enough beneficial bacteria exists that swapping out the polyfil won't affect the tank? I currently run 2 HOB's and a sponge filter on a 75 gal. I have polyfil in both my HOB's.

      As far as your poly-fil goes, poly-fil is mechanical filtration but it should be the last part of your mechanical filtration. Depending on what kind of filter you have water should hit the thick sponge first, then medium and fine, and finally the poly-fil. This will help get all the particles out of your water and clear it up. There are many more things you do to clear up your water so check out that free ebook. Hope this helped. 👍
