...oh, about my post a few seconds ago. Lisa, you are awesome and have helped me so much with your videos during the past couple of years (John, you're not so bad yourself). I am 75 years old and first got into the hobby at age 9 for just about three years. I picked it up again about three years ago and have been rocking it ever since. The changes in filtration make things so much easier and much more fun. Thank you for what you guys do. I look to you for new information every time i go online.
The dummies guide is a great idea. Will help loads of new fish keepers and the hobby in general and it is easy to follow and understand. I leave cloudy water take its coarse but do regular water tests to monitor
I was so glad I had researched this when I set up my first 5 gallon tank. It was also my first ever planted tank. I just kept telling myself this is a good bacteria the cloudy water will go away. I cycled my tank before I added my betta. He has been doing swimmingly since, I've had him. 15 months now. Monet is a happy bachelor.
I got left with taking care of my oldest daughter's betta and your videos have been a life saver. Very informative and entertaining as well😆😆. I like how simple you keep it and the humor just makes it great. I recommend anyone getting into aquariums to watch your videos.
This is an AWESOME video! Especially the very beginning where Lisa says to wait on the cloudiness of a new (er) tank and see if the bacterial bloom settles. These videos are so helpful.
My tank has been cycling for one week and the bacteria bloomed all over the wood pieces. I am struggling to be patient with it because my instincts want me to go in and brush it all away.
I want to say thank you for your channel and all of the raw, real information you give! I've had a tank of platys for years, once the last passed I still had an aquarium with a pleco and anubias plant. After several months I started a new tank with 2 baby Oscars and a young severum. I have a quarantine tank with a new blue acara I just got as well getting ready for the big tank. I've learned a lot of great tips and information from your channel, making me feel confident in my fishkeeping and decisions. Thank you!!
You all are 1 of 3 reasons(Bob is #2🤫😜) why I made it as long as I have in this fish keeping kinda life! The ways you both explain things keeps things so simple and easy to retain! I wish I had used more patience years ago when I first started my first tank. I used so many unnecessary chemicals when it was going through its first of many other nitrogen cycles. Maybe you all can do a video on the do's and don'ts when cleaning a planted aquarium for some of the newbies ? I know how, but maybe there's some who don't? Thanks again you two!! 🥰
On the topic of lighting, you can have the light on for 12 hours a day, for example, if you divide the photo periods with a dark spell of 2 to 4 hours half way through the day. This allows the plants to go into a brief rest and the water to build up co2.
I’m completely new here and establishing a tank. Is having a 24 hour cycle on alright? So for instance at 8 it goes to an orange hue. I assume this represents a sun coming up. By 10 it goes to a low white, at 12 it’s brightest, at 3 it dims a little more, at 6 it dims further and at 10 it goes to a blue light. This would repeat the following day. Would this promote algae or would this be fine?
@@CockyGaming Interesting light spectrum and timing... I've often wondered about mimicking sun/moon cycles. I have no experience with such things, but I can tell you that my first thought in terms of how much is too much light in such a scenario would be to question what intensity of "moon light" is so bright that it stops the plants from shutting down for the night and causes them to think it's still daylight. Yes, spectrum is important, but I think in this case, the intensity, par, etc. at night would be the more important factor. In terms of what plants can take a full on photosynthetic never ending 24 hour daylight and still be ok... No clue. I know some greenhouse plants can take that, but many can't. And as you can imagine, info is even more scarce on which aquatic plants can take a legit 24 hour day (where the light is still strong enough at night that they continue photosynthesizing).
Lol, dude I'm acing these tutorials. I've been in the hobby for 5 months and I'm happy to get some positive confirmation i have learned from my mistakes. Meaning I just get to put a ✔ on things I'm doing right. Thank you kgt
I love these guides so much😂 You guys are so great to have on a play while I do tank maintenance at home. They help me to stay away from being lazy even if my day has not been a great one😁👍 Thank you both for all of your work!
Had my first aquarium nightmare last night. All of the sudden my tank was filled with fish and they were all nippers! This hobby is taking over my life! 🤣
I've recently brought my old (18 yo 16.5") pleco up from my dad's place to my house... and whilst it's been a lot of work to get him set up and sorted I actually really enjoy taking care of him and his tank. Waiting for my local acrylic custom tank builder to call back so we can get him a bigger home! I'd forgotten how much I love having fish in my home and keeping their tanks looking good.
When I first got my tank, I had major issues with ammonia and the KH,GH & PH. The two best things I did was added crushed coral (AKA Aragonite) and I bought a UV Filter. Within a few days, the ammonia was down to zero and the other parameters came into line. My water has been crystal clear since. When it starts to look a little foggy, I plug the UV Filter back in and by the next day, crystal clear again!!
Thanks! I will start with the Aragonite. I am not comfortable with my numbers of late. I may then pick up a UV filter. They are significantly less expensive than they once were.
The perfect video for me 😂👍😁 Your house sounds a lot like my house I just have a Calvin instead of a John 😂😂 You did a great job on this video explaining all the causes of cloudy water!! This is one that I will share and help others to help them with their fish keeping!!! It helps me a lot too 😁👍 Thank you for sharing your expertise!! I hope you and your family are having a wonderful weekend! 👍🌿🐟🌿💚
Can I sway from the topic of this dummy guide and say, the betta that separates the segments is absolutely stunning! I hope that's yours, not stock footage, and you kept him, cause WOW!
You guys are fantastic. Watched y'all when I started my nano 5 gallon, and then when I moved up to my 10 gallon. Now me and my dad are planning a larger community tank for his house next year. I'm trying to convince him to get a 40 gallon breeder, haha!
A little quick fix when you have a lot of really small particles floating around is to use Acurel-F. It makes the particles stick together so your filter can catch them. It will make your water cloudy for about an hour or two then it becomes crystal clear. This is only a temp fix and something I only do occasionally. When I do it, its usually a sign that I need to clean/replace my polishing pad. In other words, the pad is clogged and can't get the super small particles, but when Acurel-F makes them clump together the pad can grab them.
After doing everything I was supposed to do, I recently got a cloudy tank. I am sure I overdid something. At any rate, I was going to get a bunch of stuff I THOUGHT would help. My local independent reunited me with the Acurel F, something I had not used in more than 20 years. EXCELLENT!
The best thing about having a pet is not just having them. It's the attention, affection and the work you put in to care for them.... that's the whole point.
I would suggest that those wanting to set up a larger tank go for a marine ready tank. You place a sump tank down below the tank and tank water overflows back into the sump and it gets pumped back up to the tank. This setup skims the water surface keeping it oxygenated. The real beauty of the set up is you can place one or more filter socks down in the sump. You can get them in common sizes of 50 to 300 microns. The 200 micron socks will even filter algae out of the water leaving it crystal clear. As far as filtration goes shoot for three to four times the tank volume in flow per hour.
When I started keeping fish we used spun glass or angel hair floss for the filter. I was so happy when polyester fiber fill came out. No more picking glass fibers out of my fingers! Things are better today.

My tanks are established and always crystal clear. However after adding Pristine it glistens like diamonds. I also believe, from experience, Pristine helps get rid of plant/fish waste if there's any lying around. Not a substitute for regular water changes/maintenance though!

I run Chemipure green and Purigen in one of the trays of my Oase Biotherm 350 canister filter along with Matrix and sponges in the other trays. I do a 20% water change weekly and clean the pre-filter. Every six weeks I do a complete filter cleaning and replace the Chemipure and Purigen. My 65 gallon is heavily planted with good flow from a small Tunze power head. The community tank is heavily populated with 50 small fish and Corys. Maintenance is about 60-90 minutes weekly, but the results are rewarding and make the hobby fun.Been running clean and clear for two years.

Great video! In all the years I've had fish, I've never had cloudy water. Algae and the white algae bloom on new driftwood...yeah. Guess I lucked out on that.. 😃🍄✌
I agree with most things said in the video except for vacuming the substrate. I never do that in my Walstad tank and dont have any issues with algae because I have a lot of plants and vacuming the substrate would disturb my plants (not to mention stressing the fish out and messing with soil underneath). I feed my fish only a small amount of food they need every 2-3 days. I also dont have too many fish and that helps
I run a 75 gallon filter on my 55 gallon tank with 3 electric cichlids, 2 Bumbles, blue, and 2 sucker fish. I was slightly feeding them to much and backed off. Tank looks fantastic!
The first aquarium I ever set up was after doing some work for the guy who owned a local aquarium shop, nothing huge and fancy but well kept and cared for. Good selection of both fresh and saltwater plus a cool McCaw Parrot he had as a store mascot of sorts. He helped me out to understand a lot before diving in luckily.
Thanks to this video, I discovered Seachem Purigen. It is worth every single penny. At this point, I'm convinced Seachem can do absolutely no wrong. I can't thank you enough!!
Keeping a much lower bioload than what I "could" fit in my tank. (50 ember tetras, 15 cories and 6 BNs in 400L) Running oversized biomedia sponge and cleaning it before it clogs up. Have a school of corys on a sand substrate to ensure anything that settles on the bottom gets whirled back up into the watercolumn and by extention finds its way into the filter. Running excessive light and enough plants to consistently outcompete any algae for nutrition. My maintainance consists mostly of hacking back the plants. That and the mandatory rinsing of filters and water changes. I generally find my system to be more stable the less I touch the tank.
I did start a tank and overlooked maintenance it needs but after how I learned to maintain it I just began loving cleaning my tank, cleaning algea, changing water and just taking care of the tank in general. Now I might even be spending a but too much time cleaning it out because I love to do it but at least my tank is PRISTINE
Get yourself a Phython and magnetic algae scraper, it makes the work so much easier and faster. With less mess, took me 45 minutes to an hour to finish my tank yesterday setting up a new 55 gallon.

"3 dogs, buncha cats, and a john" LOL
🤣 its those facts lol
I was waiting for John to do a walk through eating Cheetos and dropping crumbs, lol! 😂
If I could've only got that on video lol its not like it hasn't happened before 😂
omg, missed opportunity!!! LOL!
You guys are awesome. Thanks for the tips
Keeping a much lower bioload than what I "could" fit in my tank. (50 ember tetras, 15 cories and 6 BNs in 400L)
Running oversized biomedia sponge and cleaning it before it clogs up.
Informative video, but also, very funny!
어항 멋져요.
Get yourself a Phython and magnetic algae scraper, it makes the work so much easier and faster. With less mess, took me 45 minutes to an hour to finish my tank yesterday setting up a new 55 gallon.
I have a bow front. Will the magnetic algae cleaner work on bowfronts?
What a wonderful video I really love your content 😍
fishiemon Thanks for watching 🙂
