The shot spotter system can differentiate between fireworks, and gunshots. It also picks up gunshots when people attempt to use fireworks to cover the sound of gunshots.
What people don't understand is that Guns make a very distinct noise when examined through any proper audio equipment from Fireworks and the like. That's because Fireworks are a fully enclosed miniature explosive. And Guns are not. They are sepcifically designed to not be, that's how a gun works. Guns are a directed miniature explosive, with a projectile. A very different noise is produced. Would be pretty shit if these systems couldn't detect such an obvious difference, one that is even somewhat detectable by the human hear. Party Poppers and popped Balloons would be setting them off too, making them effectively worthless.
It literally goes off when cars backfire. They say it can distinquish, but it can't. I've seen so many videos of people getting hemmed up by cops because shotspotter heard their car backfire.

In New Orleans and in the suburb that I live in, we had some kind of “crime camera” technology (ShotSpotter or some close facsimile thereof) at least as far back as 2017. The naysayers say that there’s not enough proof that they help. Now we had a councilman bring up getting ShotSpotter to use as a tool to help the police. As far as I’m aware, they decided against it because they don’t have enough police to just send out to “shots fired” calls. We have only about 800 police officers here. Doesn’t it seem like this could be a tool to at least help, and should be tried? Why these blue cities choose to protect the rights of *ALLEGED* criminals over the rights of the law-abiding citizens?

If it is unconstitutional, why didn't _anyone_ who had ShotSpotter used as evidence against them, in the six years the system was in place, challenge ShotSpotter on grounds that it was unconstitutional? We have shot spotter in my city. A few years ago, when gang activity was very bad, the building I work in was hit by 4 bullets. Because of the shot spotter program, the police knew where the bullets came from immediately. My co-workers and I knew within minutes that the bullets had been fired from several blocks away and that we were not being specifically targeted (our building is one of those glass office buildings and we all felt like sitting ducks.) The experience was still nerve-wracking but, I was able to finish the work day and know that it was safer to stay in the building for an hour than to go out and get in my car and drive through the neighborhood.
I'm genuinely surprised that when I visited my friend who lives just outside of Chicago that I didn't hear 🔫 shots (though she did tell me the nearby hospital is the hub for GS victims)

Wish this program was a thing here in Atlanta. Just last week, in my own little apartment complex, a young black guy neighbor who has exhibited other erratic behaviors, leaned out of his apartment window and fired off a clip of rounds into the air. Mid day, people out and kids playing all around. I'm sure if the cops had come, there would have been discovered some extenuating circumstances and saved someone being a victim of his unbalanced mind at some later date.

ShotSpotter is an awesome system, and its primary benefit isn't to stop crime: it's to save to shooting victims. Someone is shot, and EMS and police are on scene in about 1/3rd of the time, especially since someone doesn't need to call 911, relay the information, and then wait for a dispatch. Police will, and help, will already be on their way.

In New Orleans and in the suburb that I live in, we had some kind of “crime camera” technology (ShotSpotter or some close facsimile thereof) at least as far back as 2017. The naysayers say that there’s not enough proof that they help. Now we had a councilman bring up getting ShotSpotter to use as a tool to help the police. As far as I’m aware, they decided against it because they don’t have enough police to just send out to “shots fired” calls. We have only about 800 police officers here. Doesn’t it seem like this could be a tool to at least help, and should be tried? Why these blue cities choose to protect the rights of *ALLEGED* criminals over the rights of the law-abiding citizens?
My dad and I were just talking about Chicago this morning on our daily morning calls. Its been run by Democrats for almost 100 years. It used to be such a decent-ish place and now it's a place I avoid like the plague when heading up north to visit family.
He banned shot spotters to keep black owned homes property value down. It’s going to lead to an increase in crime and a decrease in property value.

I lived in Chicago and one night we were driving home after a long party. I had no idea a car would chase us down a block and shoot at us. It was so scary. Def my sisters fault but we were all teens and the men were all in their 20s. I’ve heard many stories the same though, being chased out of their own neighborhoods and cars crashing into trees. Lots of fatalities because gangsters think they own the block.

I'm trying really hard not to ascribe malice to Mayor Johnson here; but this is so foolish it's difficult to imagine that he doesn't secretly hate the people of Chicago.
I have _several_ questions:
1. How is something that automatically reports crimes - the illegal discharging of firearms (and nothing else) - unconstitutional?
2. If it is unconstitutional, why didn't _anyone_ who had ShotSpotter used as evidence against them, in the six years the system was in place, challenge ShotSpotter on grounds that it was unconstitutional? Seems like it would be an obvious appeals route to try.
3. Has it just never been used as evidence against anyone? If so, I can understand why the program would be discontinued, but also if so...
4. Why claim "it's unconstitutional" as the reason and not "it never worked as intended"?
This Mayor never fails to disappoint my expectations of him.

I have a 12 year old son. He wouldn't dare even attempt anything even close to that behavior. To be perfectly honest if he ever did get arrested he'd probably request to stay in jail for a few days so his father and I could calm down. We've never gotten physical with him, you don't need to use violence to teach respect/authority.
If that 13 year old was my kid I'd be apologizing to the community and questioning every parenting decision I have ever made. I'd feel personally responsible.

I lived in Chicago at the time of the last mayoral election and I didn’t vote for him. Thankfully, I’m out of there now.
We have shot spotter in my city. A few years ago, when gang activity was very bad, the building I work in was hit by 4 bullets. Because of the shot spotter program, the police knew where the bullets came from immediately. My co-workers and I knew within minutes that the bullets had been fired from several blocks away and that we were not being specifically targeted (our building is one of those glass office buildings and we all felt like sitting ducks.) The experience was still nerve-wracking but, I was able to finish the work day and know that it was safer to stay in the building for an hour than to go out and get in my car and drive through the neighborhood.
I'm genuinely surprised that when I visited my friend who lives just outside of Chicago that I didn't hear 🔫 shots (though she did tell me the nearby hospital is the hub for GS victims)
Gunshots aren't very loud, you won't hear them unless it's in your immediate area, especially in a city, the sound gets absorbed pretty quickly.
Fox reported on the gun, but the local ABC affiliate printed, and I quote, "Police expected to find a gun."
It was the single most egregious case of semantics I have witnessed.

Wish this program was a thing here in Atlanta. Just last week, in my own little apartment complex, a young black guy neighbor who has exhibited other erratic behaviors, leaned out of his apartment window and fired off a clip of rounds into the air. Mid day, people out and kids playing all around. I'm sure if the cops had come, there would have been discovered some extenuating circumstances and saved someone being a victim of his unbalanced mind at some later date.

I had a thought that seems pretty bad but I wonder if black culture has strayed so far they are less assimilated into America than a lot of legal migrants. It seems to be with demands and defense of a "national anthem" for only 13% of Americans for some reason. Scott Adams feels more right as time goes on. It's sad, I view myself and them as Americans, I don't view myself as a "European American" or them as "African Americans". But that's the lens many people seem to see the world in.

I live in Detroit and we hear gunshots all the time so you do become immune to them. Also, as a Michigander, we spend a lot of time up north where we constantly hear gunshots so yes, we are immune to them.
