If you're looking for some nice fair isle patterns, I highly recommend "The Petite Knitter". She's based in the Canadian Arctic and her designs are inspire by the landscape. She has patterns for sweaters, socks, mittens and hats. They're all so beautiful!

I live in California and always have socks on the needles...the brands are available and endless, which is why I have a little problem (big problem) keeping my stash under control. Here are a few I enjoy: lolodidit , masoncrealions , a homespun house, bumblebee acres farm, Malabrigo , Purl Soho, Baah, Hedgehog fibers, Rowan (has a great sock yarn) Madelinetosh, Coloring Book Yarns, Skein Cocaine, Voolenvine yarns, (the last two are U.S, dyers and have great podcasts too - LOVE their yarn!...Of course, there are more, there's always more 🙂Happy knitting and thanks for your great podcasts! Oops...two more! Dream in Color yarns, and Chelsea Yarns!

Love, love, love the Biches et Buches lambswool. I used le petit lambswool for a sweater and it knitted up like a dream. It's a classic example of a rustic-leaning, non-itchy wool. It doesn't feel the softest in the skein, but the fabric has that soft, cool feel. The colors are unmatched and need to be seen in person. A lot of the colors are lightly flecked(maybe heathered) which adds a lot of depth.
I think if you enjoy this yarn and Biches et Buches' classic with modern simplicity aesthetic, you would really like Scout by Kelbourne Woolens. Again, it has a beautifully heathered palette. Scout is a merino blend so it feels softer and meatier when you work it up. le petit lambswool has a springier, toothy feel that translates to peak loftiness.
Can't wait to see what you haul back across the pond!

Ginger&thyme (Belgian yarn webshop) has some lovely brands I have tried out like Gabo Wool. Also eager to try the Majo Yarn I bought for a cardigan.

Great podcast….I’m a prolific sock knitter and my recent love is BFL yarn…my sister brought me some from the Loop, I knit them for my husband and he said they breathe a lot better than Merino!!

I love the look of the Tweedy Fisherman’s Wool but it is pretty itchy to me. It is ok for a cardigan that I wear a shirt under, though.

i've used the fisherman's wool for mostly accessories. I live in LA so I don't make a lot of sweaters. But I think it would be great for a garment if you're in a colder area, in this case you are. Maybe it'll be a lil itchy but I think most wool is itchy.

The fishermen’s wool is one of my favorites for cables - I made a cabled raglan in the oatmeal for my husband the passed Christmas and he gets so much wear out of it!

I have been absolutely obsessed with Coast to Coast Yarn CO’s sock yarn lately. She’s a small hand-dyer, but I’ve enjoyed every single skein so much that I’m not sure how to go back to using other yarn!

Heyyy I was just thinking I should mention coast to coast yarn co! Her yarn is so beautiful. I’m knitting with her natural extrafine base and it’s just gloriously soft.

I’m late to the party lol. I absolutely love Nomadic Yarn, her yak base is absolutely amazing. They are some of the warmest, coziest socks I’ve ever knit. I’m knitting up a pair of her yak socks now and they are flying off my needles because I just love working with it. She’s starting to add in some holiday collections this month too. I hope you’re able to get some of her yarn when you’re in the USA.

I have a Felix Cardigan in cream fisherman’s wool! It has suuuuch great stitch definition for the lace details at the raglan. It blocks out quite well too.

Hi Bethany, my all time favorite yarn is a lace weight superwash wool and silk blend called Willow Stream. It's from Willow Yarns. Last year I went a little overboard and bought a drawer full in many different shades. Held double , it makes wonderful sweaters. Nice and light, but warm.

    • @Carol-Malinois
      @Carol-Malinois Рік тому

Willow Stream is very nice but being discontinued and it is lace weight. Stay away from Willow Daily DK and Worsted. I tried it. I'm not a fan of superwash but the price was unbelievable. It feels over processed even for SW. Plus, the spin is inconsistent and the same weight in different colors can be different.

Overall I am happy with the choice of yarns we have in Europe, but there are some shops or independent dyers in the US that I am interested to try. A few examples are Barenaked wools, Expression Fiber Arts and (also mentioned by you) the Fisherman's wool. I am not very familiar with yarn from outside Europe or North America.

Same here! I would love to try Expression Fiber Arts. And I would also like to knit socks with hand dyed speckeld yarn. I love the speckels look when I see it, but I can't really find that look in Europe.
And I would like to try some of the De Rerum Natura yarns! The linnen and the wool/silk blend

I have some unspun yarn from Istex and Woollentwine in my stash that I'm very excited to knit with.
Other yarn brands that I'm planning to try at some point: De Rerum Natura, Biches & Bûches, Camarose, Wooldreamers, Holst Garn, Filcolana, and Cardiff Cashmere.

Fuzzy Peach Fibers has beautiful color ways, but her yarn is super wash wool and I don't know a lot about using that. I'd love to use some to make a sweater for my baby though.

I almost bought some of the fisherman's wool at my local Joann Fabrics recently - but I need to work through more of my stash first! I have quite a few colors of the Paton's Kroy sock yarn, which I am very excited to get on my needles soon.

I don't know if you're familiar with Purl Soho yarns. I love, love their Linen Quill yarn (wool/alpaca/linen), their Good Wool yarn and their Posy cashmere/merino yarn. And also their cotton/bamboo/hemp Santolina yarn. I'm not affiliated - just love the products. Hope you have a great trip.

Thank you for your content Bethany!
I find a bit difficult sometimes to find variety where I live (New Zealand), and importing yarn from overseas - especially from Europe- is a bit expensive. I used to buy lots from Etsy - different brands - but it can take up to 6 weeks. So I've been checking more locally and I've found a few brands that I quite like and I want to try, such as Touch Yarns NZ (they have some beautiful natural colors), Skeins NZ, and Wild Earth Yarns which have really great deals for 100% wool yarns (just concerned about how itchy those would be - I guess I'll have to try if I want to know 😅).

Very informative video and thank you for the inclusion of Siri Alpaca, I am really hoping to try that. I recently finished a cardi with Rowan silk mohair and I think the suit alpaca might be nice for a second sweater. Oh, speaking of Rowan, I love the aesthetic of the designer Kim Hargreaves who works for them…NOT officewear!

Hi Bethany, I bought the Lion Brand Fishermen's Wool from Amazon UK. I think they only stock one or two colours, but I got one skein for about £10-13. It's a great wool and well worth a try

I bought the Fisherman's wool here at Joann's. The colors look great on the skein and the price is good (I used coupons and got great deals on them) but I don't know about the quality. Also the yarn is itchy.

I am super curious about the suri alpaca! I am keen to try the suri alpaca made by blackwattle yarns from australia. Please let us know how you find the suri alpaca vs mohair! I have a 2 year old and he is super sensitive to yarns that I wear as well. He has only started to tolerate my mohair knits without getting all itchy. I am so amazed you have so much time to knit with an 8 month old...I was so sleep deprived at the period ..I couldn't focus hard enough to knit xD. You're doing amazing.

Hoping I find the time to work with that soon :) I haven’t noticed he’s sensitive to yarn in particular, I’m just worried about having to wash it too often or maybe he snags the sweater. I’ll have to check out blackwattle yarns!

In my opinion the Fisherman’s wool is very itchy.
