    Man, i can tell you took a lot of time into researching for cammy's stage. Talk about a confusing amount of information and castle inspirations for one stage is a lot. That being said, i do love this stage with the northern lights, the background details and the cute little ravens too! You did a great job on this analysis! I learned a lot from this!

    As an English person myself I can only assume this castle is meant to be in the North somewhere, the North is where you tend to get your mountains and lakes

    As someone whose lived in the UK their entire life and dragged around endless castles for school trips, I can 100% say the architecture is German and not British, also the giant house in the valley is a German design.
    Finally, the UK doesn't have cliffs with bridges spanning across then like that. Most of the UK is either a bit hill-y or entirely flat.

    • @baberuthless
      @baberuthless  Рік тому +8

      As beautiful as this stage is I do wish there was more accurate representation for England than a grab bag of castles from Germany and a bathroom in street fighter alpha 2s case.

      @@baberuthless If if was an accurate representation of the UK today, Cammy would be fighting in a McDonalds :P
      but they could have used the white cliffs of dover or beachy head, thats very british.

      @@Larry Haha for the US I'd say the same thing 😅

    I think there is a clue in that crest. It can be a Pegasus or a Winged heraldic dragon and. There is a Highclere Castle that uses the dragon. The crest alone can throw you down so many rabbit holes. If you look up castles with Angels where gargoyles usually are, a Castel Sant'Angelo comes up which is in Rome but looks very much suspiciously like this, with the crenulations on the bridge and water features. If you google castles you can see the northern lights, most are Scotland and like Dunrobin Castle comes up. I think instead of looking at the very samey architecture, look into things like that.

    Cammy's stage was also my favorite back during its release. The music too! Glad to know there is others out there!
    When I got older, I realized the inaccuracy of it... as Dan said, it's VERY rare to see the northern lights in England lol.

    Fantastic video! Thank you for all your effort!! 🥰
    I definitely think Cammy's main castle was inspired by Schloss Lichtenstein.
    I think the background was inspired by Schloss Neuschwanstein, where you can see a 2nd castle, lake, village, and mountains in the background. The 2nd castle in the valley doesn't look the same, but it does actually look a lot like Schloss Neuschwanstein from behind (which you can see if you walk over a long narrow bridge).

    The passion, interest and curiosity you took with this vid is astounding. As much I like the scenery and the serenity of Cammy's stage as its such a breathtaking stage, I do wish it was a more accurate depiction of the stage instead of a mish mash of different set pieces in on country (stage).
    I'm more familiar with Cammy's SFA3 stage Mykonos Greece which is a vibrant stage with a cheery atmosphere and music just thinking about it just gives me nostalgia again :)
    Excellent vid as always

  • @theactiveactivist515
    @theactiveactivist515 Рік тому +1

    You did a great job. Your conclusion was correct. They do this for a handful of stages. They just mash different parts of a geographic area together and make it look nice. Chun Li's stage has things mentioned from totally different parts of China. Chun Li was Pan China. These are mostly conventions from the first generation of SF games when there were many countries and major cities not represented by fighters.
    So for example in Cammy's stage, she is the new European fighter. Cammy is Pan Western and Central Europe, basically all the rest of Europe that wasn't currently represented in the game, the countries being Spain and Russia. "No German character? That's fine, we'll put a German inspired castle in the new girl's stage!" They also name moves after certain unrepresented areas as well.
    Good video!

    • @baberuthless
      @baberuthless  Рік тому +1

      This is an excellent point! Since there was very little European representatives in SF2 they could have just tried to make up for it through cammy,s stage. Perhaps they didn’t know if they would get the chance to properly represent those countries in a future game. Just a theory though

    Lichtenstein Castle being used in a recent photoshop fake, putting it on top of James Bond Island, brought this video up in the search results.
    To my eyes, it looks like a mashup of the Lichtenstein, Neuschwanstein, and Hohenschwangau castles. Mad King Ludwig's Neuschwanstein (the one Disney models their logo after) has the background buildings, and Hohenschwangau (where Ludwig grew up) has the lake. Lichtenstein's so committed to the bit of literally bridging the gap, between the old and new, that they remodeled the castle to match how it was described in a historical-fantasy novel. Once, they even rebuilt the castle within earshot of itself.

    This stage blew my mind back in the 90's. In a game full of great stages, Cammy's stands out as one of the most beautiful and dramatic.
    I know that fighting game budgets tend to be low and that character-specific stages are a big suck of limited funds, but MAN do they add to the character's story and overall vibe. I don't think the SF cast would be nearly as iconic if they didn't each debut with a whole moving backdrop that reinforces their characterization.

    It's funny that this stage is referred to as English manor and announced as England during the stage select, however, the flag displayed is for the United Kingdom. Love the video but one minor nitpick at 2:13 regarding the "stage left" comment. When saying "stage left" or stage right" it's always from the actor's perspective and not the audience. For the player, the little town in the background would be to our left (and "stage right" to Cammy)... but "stage left" would be to Cammy's left (our right) since she is facing the player/audience.

      I was similar growing up having this idea of visiting all the SF2 stage locations. At least with this stage we know we need to most likely need to go somewhere in Germany 😅 also thank you you for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

    In one website that reveals the origins of the stages of Street Fighter 2, Cammy's stage was said to be based on Castle Lichtenstein in Germany (which you showcased). In that case,; Cammy's stages should've been in Germany and not England. But yeah, Cammy's stage was popular back in the day and to this day. Not just for the scenery of the stage, but Cammy herself.

    I'm gonna guess that Cammy's Stage aka Fraserburg Castle aka English Manor might be an amalgamation of various places in Europe because of these:
    1 - The castle you're fighting on might be based on either Edinburgh Castle in Scotland or Kronborg Castle in Denmark
    2 - The Northern Lights aka Aurora Borealis are normally seen in Scandinavian countries like Norway and Sweden
    3 - The lake might be based on either Lake Windemere in England or Lake Saimaa in Finland
    4 - The manor might be based on Schloss Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany
    5 - The mountains are probably fjords which are found in Norway

    I remember reading that the Castle Bridge which Cammy fights on is Lichtenstein Castle in Germany.
    Weirdly I saw a snap shot of the sprawling landscape scene in Cammys background compared with a real life picture that was located somewhere in Cumbria or on the border or Scotland. I cant find it now, but I'll see if I can link it if I do

    This reminds me of another common misconception in Tekken 2, which also has stages unique to every character. Old Chinese master Wang Jinrei's, in particular, is widely believed to be somewhere in the Szechwan mountains. But the stone structures in the backdrop bear no resemblance to any Asian architecture whatsoever and are actually the ruins of Machu Picchu, all the way over in Peru. Jinrei's stage is even further off the mark than Cammy's, but they both prove that a character's identity shouldn't be tied down to where they come from.

    • @baberuthless
      @baberuthless  Рік тому

      I actually did not know that about wang,s stage in tekken 2! To your point though that is very true in terms of attaching a stage to a characters identity. I think that some stages mail a character perfectly but they are many cases where it just can’t work. For example M.bisons SF2 stage being Thailand

    While not complitely same in design, the castle in the background looks very similar to Neuschwanstein Castle in Fussen Germany. Capcom used this castle's image multiple times in their Resident evil series starting from the 1996 original to RE4 in 2005. I wouldn't be surprised if this trend started from SSF2.

    For Cammy Type A and B that people will hear from Smash Bros is this while you do hear while it is from the Anniversary Edition which had both CPS1 and CPS2 music and for those confused by this let me explain. CPS1 was used for the earlier version of Street Fighter 2 so from World Warrior and up till I believe Hyper Fighting and if you listen to those tracks those were the OG version of songs. Then if that is the case how dose Cammy, Dee Jay, Fei Long and T. Hawk have there own versions of the CPS1 even though the music was changed to CPS2 where the music sounded better?
    That's Where the Anniversary version comes in and gave the those characters there own CPS1 music of the stages. Many people would have heard this from the home ports of the Anniversary Collection back on the PS2 and OG Xbox Days since with those you can change the music. After when New Challengers comes in is what most people would know which is the Type B version = CPS2 version of each stages in the game. I believe that Akuma dose not have a CPS1 version of his theme? but I could be wrong about that. So I hope that helps someone out for those wondering about the differences with CPS1 and 2.
    Also good job going over this Cammy stage was one of my favorites from the game and thought it stood out from the other tracks.

      Thank you so much for breaking it down for me like that! I was losing my mind trying to find out by they were these different versions and incorrectly assuming they came from hyper street fighter 2 only which just added to my confusion when both versions were added in smash

      @@baberuthless Hey it is all good and happy to help out with something like this I mean I think it's cool that someone is doing research on fighting game stages and Cammy's was one of my favorites back in the day since it was different than most of the other stages and I think the one we got from Super Turbo days was good and also was surprised to see how SF5 made this stage look great. Also like I said some people would have gotten confused by why there are two different versions of same track and how they sound differently this is just me being a bit of a nerd when it comes to sharing this kind of information. :)

    When i was a kid playing Super Street Fighter II on the SNES, i figured the stages are more the FEEL of the culture that that character is from more than a specific place. Fighting games back then didn't really have story mode. Guile's stage was stereotypical American air force base. Coulda been a McDonald's or something LOL. Some of them might be real places but that was before the internet so i would have had no way of looking that up. Or the developers. They probably went to the airport and picked up travel brochures and stuff. "So Segat is from Thailand. Whats Thailand look like??" "Uh ... Buddha statues?? IDK lol" I remember at the time reallly liking what they did with T-Hawks stage. Its like a native Mexican theme. Like Aztec or something instead of Native North American Pueblo or Sioux . Figured T-Hawk was more the kind that ignored modern borders. Native American is Native American. I also dont remember anything about his backstory. So i have no real idea LOL.

      To their credit it was probably really hard to come up with stages beyond their own country of Japan. Assuming they ever left Japan and might have just looked up stuff in books and movies for reference.

    I believe the British royals actually do have some Germanic blood in their lineage due to marriage back in the day. During WWI and WWII, they changed their name away from their Germanic roots, naturally due to the hostility the British people felt toward the Germans at the time. This could explain some of the confusing mish mash of German-Austrian castles mixed in with Cammy's "English manor" stage.

    • @baberuthless
