  • This tutorial takes you through the construction and knitting of a super simple hat with ear flaps and ties. While there is a pattern available for free, the technique is perfect for you to use with your own yarn and any stitch pattern you like, including color work.

    Great video..easy to follow. One suggestion, my adhd finds the background (your cutting mat) pattern very distracting. But I learned 2 things I didn't know from this one video! The invisible join and estimating your cast on length by simply wrapping on the rt hand needle-BRILLIANT. I have only been knitting year but gosh I wish I had known that before! Esp before my first sweater, lol.

    This is great, how do you determine number of stitches to make the child size hat?

    How do you decrease? And for a regular hat when do you start decreasing usually (around how many inches form the bottom)?

    I have circular needles but no double pointed needles. Can I do the earflaps with regular straight needles? It doesn't look like you use the other side of the needle.

    How would adjust for smaller heads? What was your stitch count for the child's hat for each segment of the hat?
    Did you do swatches to figure out the gauge?
    I want to make a hat for a child but hate doing swatches to measure.

    You may want to change in your description that the pattern is not free as your site says it costs $7.50. Just so no one is mislead. Love the hat!

    Gorgeous yarn, great pattern. BUT it’s too small for my adult son with big curly hair. Could you recommend how to make it bigger and a bit slouchier??? Thanks so much. I love it!

    • @snowyowlknits4009
      @snowyowlknits4009  3 роки тому

      I think it depends on what yarn you are using, and the diameter of your son's head. Measure his head and don't snug the measuring tape up too much. If you need another inch, then add an extra stitch or two to each section, front, back, and ear flaps (again, depends on your knitting gauge). The decrease sections will become apparent as you work them. I think if you want it slouchier, you could stick to the original decrease directions if you add extra stitches at the beginning, and it will naturally be slouchier.

    When do you start decreasing?

    • @snowyowlknits4009
      @snowyowlknits4009  3 роки тому

      Begin decreasing when you believe that the hat should begin to shape; its a personal choice! Some people like their hat to be slouchy, others for it to form-fit to the head. That being said, allow approximately two inches for decrease rounds.

    It looks like you have seventy some stitches is that enough for an adult hat?

    • @snowyowlknits4009
      @snowyowlknits4009  5 років тому +1

      Yes. I have a 21" head, and the 72 cast on stitches and the 18" circulars provided just the right fit for me with the Cascade Eco Duo yarn.

    • @lindamcneely
      @lindamcneely 5 років тому +1

      all I have are sixteen inch circulars so will give it a try thanks again for all your time in figuring this out! @@snowyowlknits4009

    • @snowyowlknits4009

      @@lindamcneely So, I realized after buying two sets of Addi circular sets (one with the 5 inch needles, and the other with the 2 1/2 needles, that the cords in each set are either shorter or longer depending on the set, and so I can mix and match to get the length I need. If you have a 20" set, that might work, or you could do magic loop. Good luck!

      Later today my web master is going to load the pattern onto my website. I hope you enjoy it! I ended up doing some more gradual decreases than I mentioned in the video, and was really pleased with it.
