I was at this concert at the Waikiki Shell with my girlfriend who eventually became my wife. We sat in the grass on a blanket with Diamondhead as a silhouette in the background under a perfect moon-lit sky. l This was one of the best concerts of my life. I had the pleasure of meeting Mackey after the show. He was truly one of the most down-to-earth and most humble guys you could ever meet. Every time I hear this song I get emotional because it really speaks to me about the love he had to entertain and make others smile. I really was blessed to see him and miss him dearly.
Re-discovering Kalapana again in 2022. THIS was GREAT music!! Mackey's voice will never be duplicated or replicated. Such a talented musician who bared his heart and soul to us. He will never be forgotten and his musical legacy will live on. RIP Mackey, Malani and DJ - you're singing and flying with the angels!!! And LOVE that cha-cha dance with Malani at 2:40💖💖!
First saw KALAPANA at San Diego State Univ. I was hooked. Went to Hawaii and stayed, shaping surfboards on the North Shore for over 20 years. My wife surprised me with tickets to this show at the Shell. Ill never forget what this band meant to me. 🙂
Yes, Mackey Feary was their voice, writer and star attraction. So sad that no one really paid that much attention to him earlier. His music spoke a lot about himself and his struggles with life and his wife. Sad, but glad to have heard him sing. Mahalo Braddah Mac for everything. Mahalo Nui Loa.
I was stationed there in 84 in the Army at 19...Man i wish i could go back to the night this concert was going on....I would walk Waikiki that night and take everything in.....for some reason Honolulu was more special then.....I dont think it was just because I was young either......
Mahalo for this treasure! Also enjoyed hearing Mackey speak, (now that we know how shy "timid" he was after seeing "THE HURT - The Mackey Feary Story" video) introduced the song, tat it was written in '71. He's so humble he didn't even mention he was the one who wrote it, plus he was a little funny too! If this was in '84, I was there, Mackey's voice melted (still melts) our hearts in every song! Mahalo! : )
I was a rocknroll guy back in the 70's/80's so I never followed the C&K and Kalapana scene. But as I've aged I've become appreciative of their music and compositions.
Been loving the songs of Kalapana since elementary but i just saw only recently their faces, thanks to You Tube. But this song, i just heard it today, wow! Why only now! Been playing this over and over again while dancing. So sad that Mr. Mackey Feary is already gone. He has a beautiful voice. He looks humble and shy. Love Kalapana so much!
In the early eighties I attended a "private scool" in Ewa, and during art class our teacher would almost always play Kalapana. C n K. Country comfort erc. To anyone of of my school mates out there if your reading this God bless you all. And to the staff of Hale o ulu. Most notably Mr. Black" thanks for truly being there, you were as much a friend to us than just a teacher. THANK you brother, God bless you.. Ben...
What makes me most depressed is that Mackey was such a beautiful person and got so screwed over so badly by someone who he loved and he could not bear to hang on. Also that he never received the writing praises nor commercial success that Kalapana were due. I can't blame him for giving up though this world has some dark forces lurking behind pretty faces, law makers and law enforcement sometimes. He really got a bad deal and his punishment truly did not fit the crime. Shameful of both his wife and the system. My only hope is that he is at peace and God's forgiveness was granted for his own suicide.
I feel sorry to my idol, he died of drug overuse. He will be greatly missed, partly our voice has the same quality so I'm very happy for that, I always sing Kalapana songs when I and some friends hit the karaoke. RIP

Another song with moon, stars, an sun that is good is from Miss Saigon - Sun and Moon. Thanks, Kalapana. It's Nov 2021 now and it's all good.

Such a dreamboat with a great voice. Too bad he is no longer writing songs and singing with the band. Greatly missed.
A TRUE LEGEND, HIS MUSIC IS WAY AHEAD OF HIS TIME👍
Still in 2019. Unforgettable
Would do anything to have been at this show! Born just a few years too late
