- This is Kalapana in Waikiki Shell (128C68-9599), a live concert featuring the Hawaiian group Kalapana at the Waikīkī Shell in Honolulu, Hawaii on April 13th, 1984. It was commercially released only in Japan.
Kalapana is a Hawaiian music group that was started by David John "DJ" Pratt, Carl James "Malani" Bilyeu, Bryant Mackey Feary, Jr., & Kirk Thompson. They released their first album in 1975 and found immediate success in Hawaii & Japan with their smooth yet unique AOR rock, jazz, & R&B crossover sound. Over the years, the group won numerous awards and released over 15 albums (with many having been released only in Japan). While three of the four founding members have now passed, the band continues to play to this day as a duo.
Enjoy this great band straight from the heart of Hawaii!
Fun fact: Wikipedia claims that the word "Kalapana" means "sprouting money" in Hawaiian (in addition to it being the name of a Hawaiian town), but the founders of the band originally thought it meant something else (“Beat of the music” or “black sand”).
Fun fact 2: According to Wikipedia, Kalapana disbanded for a period starting in 1982 and then reformed in 1986... although with this April 1984 concert, I'm not sure if that is correct...

Note: For some reason, the EDV-9000 deck experiences random drop outs with this tape. I'm not sure why.

Mackey and Malani had some golden voices. Rest easy you two 🤙
Mackey Feary was a really magnificent talented vocalist.
Effortless magnificence.
You just CANNOT compare the bands of today with those of the 60s, 70s and 80s. These musicians have killer harmonies, showmanship and pure, unmatched talent, unlike the bands of today who have autotune help, extraneous people on stage to mask their no-talent, and studio assistance to improve their vocals.
RIP in Love and Paradise - Mackey, Malani and DJ. You're all together in Rock and Roll Heaven and jammin" with the best of 'em🥰💖🤩!!
I have worked a many Shell Shows with Eggshell Lighting. I have seen and been apart of so many amazing shows. Long Live Hawaii and Her Amazing Musicians....
