You can mask a shape layer. The two icons next to the shape layer fill toggle mask and shape layer drawing. Just toggle mask drawing and draw your mask directly on a shape layer.

Great tutorial! You actually can mask a shape layer. if you select the pen tool (or other shape) and then click on the star left to the fill and stroke colour it will draw a mask instead of a shape.

I've been using after effects now for for a few months after only having some experience in video editing. It's a steep learning curve, but i'm starting to get there. That said, your channel in particular has taught me many techniques and ideas I have found extremely useful.

Great tutorials - Im a relatively new user to After Effects and find your tutorials very easy to follow. My 4 year old son is a huge fan of the fantasy film 'The Neverending Story.' I was wondering if you can advise how easy/hard it would be to replace the actor from the film riding the Luck Dragon through the skies with video footage of an actor/him in front of a green screen? Thanks and keep up the great work!
+MikioW7 If you shoot your shoot against a green screen and mask the actor our of the shot as best you can, it would be possible to replace the actor entirely with your son I think.

+Moonjar I haven't done it yeah mainly because smoke isn't an easy prospect. You need to run fluid sims in 3D to make it look good ;)

My dads birthday is on October 23d also! I'm a big fan of your channel and you got me into film-making. After effects looked so complicated and never thought there was a youtube channel like yours! And it would be pretty cool if you could do the lightning throw effect from The Flash season 2, where Flash turns sand demon into glass? (without the turning person in glass, duh, just the lightning throw, and I'm gonna shut up now)
Most tutorials are boring when they don't need to be and long when they can be short. I just made something that I wanted tutorials to be 😉

+Mink Sure is, just add a rectangle mask around the door and add whatever you like inside. I merely did it this way as that's the way it is on the show. The room doesn't light up until someone walks in.
