Grown, 39 year old father here. When Will came out and Dorothy immediately ran off the stage holding back tears, it really hit me. How a mother could choose a man over her own kid bafgldles me. And I've been there with my own mother. I felt this girl's pain. I just hope that she was able to move on without her mother and live a beautiful life

Same... Dad wasn't around much and he passed away when I was 9. Mom wasn't much better and I had no choice but to grow up under her 'care'. Steve in 'caring, protective parent' mode is how I wish both my parents had been so I wouldn't have had to somehow provide myself 95% of my overall needs, including my own sense of safety and security. He's the role model parent that many kids need but either don't have or never got.

Reminds me of my mom. Always chose men over her kids. Now she is older and most of her kids don't want to have anything to do with her. She acts like we are evil because we distance ourselves from her. Even in our adult lives she would always bring up bad things we did when we were teenagers or kids in conversations with my husband to make fun of how horrible we were as kids. She was clueless to the fact that her decisions caused us to feel unwanted and act out.

I know a story very similar to this. The mother was glad to get rid of the daughter because she saw her as a threat to taking her man. He ran away with the mother's sister in the end, who had a 14 year old daughter at home.

there is more to teaching a child self-esteem, then telling them that they are valued and matter, and shouldn't have to do certain things and hang around certain people to feel that way, part of which means protecting them from people that mean them harm, even if they are people that you like or love. because if you don't do it, who are they gonna learn it from? they're going to Learned the wrong lessons from the wrong people and environments.
That mother is struggling to come up with an explanation to why she married him when she knew he made these comments to her daughter and never apologized for it. It goes to show she only cares for her own happiness and not what’s best for her daughter. Her walking away from her was just confirming what we already knew.
