Man, I love saving money when I can and being frugal, but that doesn't always pan out when what I'm trying to save money on is shoes...especially when they're super budget-friendly Amazon shoes.
Two very popular barefoot shoes that you've likely seen on Amazon include the WHITIN Minimalist Trail Runner and the TSLA Cross-Training Shoe. These models have thousands of reviews so I was curious about them.
What does $35-40 really get us when it comes to budget-friendly barefoot shoes?
To be honest, both of these shoes are fine and they'll get the job done for you. They've performed okay in the gym thus far for me and on my casual hikes/dog walks they've also been fine.
I think there are definitely pitfalls with these shoes and some long-term durability concerns, but again, for the price these are aspects that one should except when trying to save money on shoes.
Either way, this was a fun video to make and I might put together full reviews for these models or simply include them in round-ups where they fit.
If you have any questions on these shoes or models that you want me to test out - please let me know in the comments below!

Girlfriend review: I do not enjoy being in public w him wearing these dinosaur-toe shoes
My husband feels the same way about all my wide box, old lady shoes and hiking type shoes 🤣 I tell him "Babe, they are extremely comfortable though!" 👞 He doesn't care. He wants to destroy them 😅
Time to break up with girlfriend
😂
Lol. Your leg health is more important
Girl you’re gonna have bunion if you don’t stop wearing pointy witch shoe aka high heel/modern sneaker.
Thanks for this video! I bought a pair of Whitin that I use when doing yardwork. I don't want to destroy my expensive barefoot shoes and I am unable to wear conventional shoes anymore. I keep them in the garage so the rubber smell, which is gone now, is not an issue and took the insoles out of them. They have all of the barefoot shoe properties, but are cheap enough that I don't care if they get muddy, grass stains or sopping wet. And have held up well for almost a year now!😀
Ill wait for the lifting review on these I've been interested in them for a bit
I bought the Whitins (the style without the plastic on the sides) as my first pair of barefoot shoes about a year ago. My experience with them has been great, durability is excellent, I've done trail running/hiking up to 16 miles a day up and down steep trails, gravel and rocky terrain, and there's been zero problems with durability. I think the traction will wear out before any part of the shoe fails. No complaints with traction, but haven't tried them on wet ground/rocks. As far as the lace system, they have been great, never get loose and after lots of miles, still work like new. I will eventually try some higher end barefoot shoes, just because these are ugly, but if you're wanting to try barefoot style without spending a lot, this is a great way to start. Then you can upgrade to a nicer looking pair and use these around the house.
Love it!
Thanks for the video. I bought a few pairs of those for short distances running and general wear. They are so affordable and as far as durability is concern, they last quite a while. They are not supportive and I wouldn't use them for serious hiking or trail running. But having said that, I find them to be good training shoes for strengthening foot muscles and legs without costing a bomb. I use them once for half marathon and they were ok but o boy my feet sore after that.
Thank for watching and for sharing your experiences 💪
Have you checked out Splay Freestyle? They have a Vans/Converse look and I haven't seen many reviews on them. I've been curious about them for some time now.
I have not! I’ll definitely look into them now though - thank you for the suggestion!
I have a couple of pairs of the TSLA in a different style. Sadly after being barefoot for a while they are now a bit too narrow.
I have the Whitens (my insoles are blank, rather than having "sports" on them) and they are terrible as a trail shoe. The lack of protection is not a major issue if you're used to minimalist shoes, but the real problem is they have terrible traction in wet conditions. I did about 30 miles on them (including 5 or so miles off-trail) before deciding they were (very) comfy shoes for shuffling around town, but not on any climb.
The Whitin casual style shoes do not have that stink. They also have a few styles available in an extra wide width. I'm new to barefoot shoes and I love this brand so far. I also really like the cheap simple packaging because it's not wasteful. I'm not going to have any need for all the extra packaging a lot of brands have.
Also: I'm a new viewer of this channel and I appreciate the fair and honest reviews.
I haven’t tried their other models so that’s good to hear in re: stink, and I can’t agree more in regard to price and packaging! Wish more companies would figure that out as well.
Thank you and welcome to the channel! Super stoked to have you 💪
You work fast! Thanks for this! Hope you can try the Vapor Glove style TSLAs someday too.
Low-key constantly burning myself from both training too much and work, but it's okay...we'll look past that and I'll deal with it later.
Soon! Have so many models to work through for 2022 :)
@@thatfitfriend respect and well wishes.
@@ChronicWatClesNarnia thank you, brother! And thanks for rocking with me 💪
i had the tesla shoes falor ages and they were mid which is prettyy good for their price
I have these and I didn't find anything bad about them. Comfortable and at a good price! I have three different pairs. I don't see how paying hundreds is going to make much difference.
Which models? And thanks for sharing! Def helps others 🤝
Checking back in to ask if you can snag the Vapor Glove style TSLAs to test. It looks like all of the “trail running” style shoes are mostly sold out on Amazon now.
Will get to them soon hopefully! Have multiple models in the queue atm!
I just ordered Xeros. Excited to make the switch.
Have you reviewed the Whiten barefoot shoes? (Black, for lifting)
Which model specifically? I likely have!
I've been looking into barefoot running for a while now, but it's so hard for me to pull the trigger on a first pair of shoes. I saw the whitin cross trainers. The price was cheap, high ratings on Amazon, and they look better than the trail runners IMO. Do you think they would be a good purchase? Or would it be better to spend the extra money and get something like a vivo or zero for a first shoe?
This is a tough one. IMO, going with something like a Xero Shoes Prio can be a decently budget-friendly route and they’ll last you longer/look better. So you can implement them slowly and use them for a while where as these don’t look the best/perform the best so they could actually turn you off if you’re on the fence of implementing this style of footwear more often! Just my two cents tho!
I just ordered a $43 barefoot trail runner from amazon, Whitten iirc. I didn't want to pay $100+ for a completely new style of shoe that I may or may not like. ymmv
@@abc-wv4in keep us posted on how you like them!
@@abc-wv4in plz let us know next of kin if you die slipping in your Whitens on the trail
I find it odd that so many people are concerned about the aesthetic side of barefoot shoes. Surely the most important question is how effective they are - eg. do they do the job you bought them for- for trails and roads and certainly not the catwalk. I've worn Vivo and Merrel and altho' they are expensive they do not last any longer than el cheapo gear from Amazon.
I mean…if you have the means, you might as well get something that you look like the look of 🤷🏼♂️ to each their own at the end of the day!
I saw Whitin came out with “barefoot plus” shoes with a trail runner among them with lugs on them. They actually looked comparable to others with a lot of reviews. Would love to see your take on them!
Ayo! I saw those, too. They're on my to-do list once I'm back from traveling this month :) Good looks!
Hey, I’ve never worn minimalist shoes but i can comfortably run barefoot on concrete. Do i still need to do a breaking in period?
Probably not, but won’t know until you try IMO!
Bought Xero shoes and they fell apart within a few months. I hope these cheaper shoes aren't worse than that.
I really don't know why they call this a trail runner. I've tried a couple of these and ended up with the Whiten. BUT the style with the elastic laces and no top flap is the best one. I wear them all the time. Like not having to tie the laces. I go everywhere in these but I've got better shoes for running, trail, cross training. My wife even got one and we get lots of compliments!
Which shoes do you have for running?
Any chance you can try the Vibram five fingers shoes? I see different people using them for weight lifting
Yeah, they're on my to-do! I've been reluctant to invest in them because I think they're v ugly, lol.
@@thatfitfriend actually they are!
@@thatfitfriend I first got a chance to try them back in 2015 and have bought another pair since then.
ive done hiking, walking, camping, mountain biking, you name it.
by far the best shoes I've ever had.
i just bought a pair of WHITINs because i currently can't afford a new pair of 5 fingers, but do yourself a favor; getting past the weird looks is 100% worth it.
I love these shoes!
I think this dude exaggerated with the rubber smell 😂 crazy!
Bruhhhh, no shot! Come get a whiff of mine 😂 maybe they’re diff, I’m sure quality control isn’t the best
The TSLA tights slap though!
Thanks for the video! I’m just looking into getting some barefoot shoes, and I don’t have much money to invest in them. Hoping these could be a good starting point for getting my feet used to these types of shoes!
Welcome - thanks for watching! Should be good starter models to get you going💪
I got saguaros off Amazon last week. And im after ordering more today. They are comfortable as hell. Paying $200 plus for the bigger “brands” is crazy. You’re not getting shoes that are 6 times better even though they are 6 times the cost. Saguaro and whiten look the same. I have merrells that were $80 and my $40 saguaros are waaay more comfortable to walk and run in
@@toomuch9762 love this! Thank you for sharing 💪
Great video, Jake! The Whitin’s do look really bad, but performance wise, maybe a cop? Ill stick to the review before choosing a barefoot shoe :)
They're not terrible by any means and if you only lifted in them, then they should last longer, too! For the price point, I like them A LOT better than the TSLAs.
What would you say is the best bare foot earth style shoes to buy on Amazon for 100$ or less?
I've really enjoyed the WHITIN Casual Sneakers. Held up well, look decent, and are comfy!
awesome!!!!
Sabo weightlifting shoe review coming up?
I can add these to the mix, I have a written article live on my site that I'll link below! Are you talking the deadlift shoe or the weightlifting shoe specifically...or dare I say tackle both?
Sabo Deadlift Shoe Review: thatfitfriend.com/sabo-deadlift-shoes-review/
It just says " SPORTS " I saw that on Amazon and I was just thinking just leave it blank.
I legit laughed out loud when I saw it in person 😂
lmao insoles brought to you by SPARTS
I spart, you Spart, we SPARTS
Haven't you even ran or used the shoes your reviewing??
Yep. Look at most of my content lol
I am 54 years old, I grow up with the mentality good things but less things. That means I always spend more money for good shoes but I own less shoes. It’s two years I walk with barefoot shoes and still think like this. For health problems I have to wear medical socks whole the day. But on the weekends I often don’t wear them so I can use toe socks. For job I use Vivo shoes, for casual Vibram Fivefingers and as boot a Freet model. Each shoe is like a glove for my feet. No ugly rubber smell no stinky feet.
I have 100$ which one would you recommend to buy
WHITIN if you want to save or Xero Shoes Prio (89 USD) if you want something of a bit more quality!
If all you have is $100 then don't buy anything with it. Save your money.
@@TacoPoweredTimeTraveler I’m assuming that’s in reference to $100 USD set aside for a pair of barefoot shoes. At least, that’s how I interpret those comments on shoe/review content.
@@TacoPoweredTimeTraveler it's not about saving money. It's about I have that much money to spend to shoes.
@@thatfitfriend thank you I bought prio. That just amazing shoes for everything. My foot stopped hurting in the first week of wearing + extra exercises
Any updates??!
On which model/what aspect?
@@thatfitfriend on both shoes. I’m gonna get some withings soon, but very curious how they’ll be for regular wearing around and trail running.
I actually just bought a pair of Whitten. Arriving later today. I'll comment to let you know what I think. I've has the Inova barexf for 9 years, and have had two other minimalist shoes. Though I didn't buy these ugly psuedo-toe shoe versions lol
Dope and sounds good! Def lmk what you think. These are the "dinosaur toe" models, LOL
GO SPORTSING!
There is no X in the word especially.
LOL, not the first time I’ve heard that. Seems like you’ve never visited the rural Midwest in the states then 😂
Check out my latest Inov-8 F-Lite 245 review at the end of the video if my pronunciation bothers you. I’m getting better, boss. 👌
@@thatfitfriend Great job dude :D

Asics, Adidas, Nike, etc should start making barefoot shoes to bring down the price. You pay more for less. Vivo is sooo overpriced! Maybe you could push the industry to move in the right direction. It should be a crime to produce any other shoe but barefoot shoes, cause its unnatural. Give your life to Jesus, God and be saved!
Omg, complains about feeling the terrain in a zero drop barefoot minimalist shoe, he’s shit on the low budget. I actually got two pair of these shows and neither one had any rubber “stink” as he put it.
Cry is free bro, why are you upset because we had different experiences?
You keep saying "eXpecially"...no such word. It's "eSpecially". If you're going to make videos, you should know how to say common words correctly. And you say "like" way too much.
Then don’t watch, Brah. I don’t care 🤷🏼♂️
I always struggle with that word due to saying it growing up in the Midwest. I’ll get it right in future vids…too bad you won’t be watching to find out 😂
