  • The 2019 Honda Grom no longer stands alone in the 125cc market and with competitors like the Kawasaki Z125, Honda Monkey, and Honda SuperCub out there, Honda is stepping it up. With 9.7 horsepower at 7000 RPM and 8 lb-ft of torque at 5500 RPM, you'll find yourself hitting the rev limiter at the DukeOfDC tested 56mph top speed.

    I actually purchased a 2019 Grom today ...well since it's Sunday now then I bought it yesterday. I got it in Orange and I will probably do some mods in a month or two. And though I'm no spring rooster, this is actually my very first ever motorcycle. I had a scooter that I traded in. I will change the mirrors today and later replace the levers with ASV shorty levers and also install a TwoBros full system exhaust + some other minor changes to make it my own.

    • @OntarioAndrews415
      @OntarioAndrews415 5 років тому

      @@eksohc Well, I hurt my back (non-moto related) so I haven't been riding and may need to a quick sell, but that's another story. But to your point - it's basically an around town learning to shift and get your moto road skills in check for beginners. And cost effective for overall cost of ownership; insurance, gas, etc.
      There's nothing wrong with beginning on a 300cc or even a 600cc if one is comfortable. The Grom is just fun to ride.

      I own a new supercub. It's pretty fun, but it doesn't feel like the simple, utilitarian bike of old. It's a comfort bike now and has all the modern comforts and features. No loading it up like you see in the pics of SE Asia. The suspension doesn't allow for it. I'm on the fence with the centrifugal clutch. I keep shifting and downshifting at much higher rpms than recommended because it's more fun. When i rode my old C70, I'd pretty much always be in 3rd unless I was going from a dead stop. There's actual shifting with this one. I figure I'll just repair it or pay for any transmission or clutch damage I cause. Tons of fun and easy to ride

    I've owned a Z125 and a honda monkey. I've ridden the grom extensively though. The z125 has a great motor with a slightly better top end hit. I had a pipe, intake, and power commander on my Z125 and a cam, pipe, and bazzaz on my monkey. Both bikes feel remarkably similar from a power output standpoint now. I think the hondas have a bit better build quality than the Kawasaki did. I also prefer the foot peg placement on both the Grom and Monkey vs. the Z125.

      You're not getting 70+ from a grom without changing everything and adding a big bore kit. I've been building bike's since 1985 son. It doesn't work that way. The grom is great at what it does but you are in no way going to hit 70+ mph with a pipe and intake change. Takes a shitload more than that.

  • @claytonroot806
    @claytonroot806 5 років тому

    4:56 Your top speed run was a joke! Probably because of the stupid aftermarket pipe that was put on this bike. It reminds me of the old 1982 450 Nighthawk that so many "aftermarket tuners" tried to improve, ONLY to find out that Honda had absolutely nailed it from the factory and there was nothing left to be gained by tuners. I did improve my 450 Nighthawk by switching the front sprocket to one with 2 less teeth. Initially it would redline at 9,200 rpm in 5th gear but then slow down when shifted into 6th because if fell off the power band. After the sprocket change, it topped out at 8,800 rpm in 6th gear which was almost perfect. Gas mileage actually improved a touch, top speed went up by 10 kilometers per hour and that bike was virtually impossible to stall in 1st gear & could wheelie in 2nd gear when weather conditions were correct. The only downside was that rpms in 6th gear increased from 4,400 to 5,000 at 60 mph, BUT that was still 1,000 rpms less than the previous generation Honda 400 which only had a 5 speed transmission. But I digress.
    The guy in the video clip below has had 4 Honda Groms and they all topped out at 73 mph when they hit the Rev Limiter in top gear. Of course, the rider, in this case weighing over 200 pounds has to be totally tucked in to achieve this kind of top speed but it is doable.
    ua-cam.com/video/_6gY4d6VF3A/v-deo.html
    Anyway, the Grom looks like a blast to ride! Speed isn't everything.
