Good use of the smoke machine, we see lots of slobber issues when drivers idle for long periods in the cold. Use to see lots of broken rocker arms too, on the acerts when it gets cold out (-30c) or colder drivers would say they were getting great boost, 60 psi or more then POP! there goes an intake rocker. good video thanks.
Maaan you saved me some stress.... Oil exhaust blow back and blowing smoke like a train. New turbo and replacing oil lines... Hopefully will fix the issue. Very helpful video 👍🏻
I have a tractor (JD 4020), that has a oily residue coming from the exhaust manifold where it goes into the stack. I have concluded that it is more than likely caused by the engine (apparently designed to not use valve seals at all). If you don't heat the engine to a good temperature, or if it is not worked hard enough it will not fully burn the diesel, and it collects in the exhaust.
Love the channel being a cat tech myself its nice to see different ways of doing things to make the job easier. The smoke machine is a great idea and will be ordering one soon. Keep up the good work.
I just experienced excessive white smoke and oil leakage on my Cummins N14 exhaust pipe, this video helped a lot, thank you. Unfortunately in Fiji they don't keep N14 parts...
This is l exactly what I have on a C4.4. Engine would also runaway when it ramps up. Did cylinder cutout none of them are dead . After running away when you pull piping on the tubing side it’s dry. Ran the engine for 1 minute and it was a puddle of oil. Pulled CCV filter it does look dirty but I’ve seen worse . Pulled air filter it’s not too bad . Will replace the turbo and retest.
For you Cummins ISB guys. A restricted air filter or crank case filter can cause the turbo impeler seals to leak. For you Hino guys, a leaky turbo is normal. Hope I saved someone a couple grand!
That oil return line can be really problematic, since the return tube/sealing surface really doesn't want to stay flush with the turbo side and it's so tempting to just tighten up the bolts to make it seal. Wondering what could be done better than just using rtv sealant on oil return to seal the gap and not over tightening the bolts ?
What is end play tolerance for ... 86 3406? Engine smokes, blue / white when cold, nice & black when working, H2O at temp. 210F. / 225F. ? I am learning so many, keep up good work.
I just found a turbo on a c15 that the exhaust side was dry of oil.. but it fails the smoke test. Engine was consuming oil. Going to replace this turbo and hope the blow by shows less vapor and froth.
You have never heard any noise as loud as a broken rocker arm. Customer driver the poor truck in, as we heard it approach all of us mechanics looked around in a panic.
We had a oil seal fail on a 6v53t and it ranaway on us, luckily with 2 strokes is that is doesn't need the turbo because it has a roots blower. Sit runs since we removed the problem
Good video as usual . I love the destruction part . On the turbo break , any ideas on the cause ? My only guess would be mechanic error . Even then I'm not sure what could have caused it .
Adam Cole yea I should think before I type sometimes. I was looking at the style of lock nut on the rockers when I was thinking that. 5EK and push rod don't go together. LoL
So what direction would you go in this scenario? White smoke that really burns the eyes. Lots of blow by coming out of oil fill cap. Iv tried turning individual injectors off to see if smoke stops but it stays the same with all cylinders. I did find a little bit of oil in the intake turning on the turbo and the rest of the intake piping. No misfires
My ford fiesta diesel has been leaking a bit of oil in the turbo for 4 years now. Ford said it’s normal. One time i had to change the intercooler and it was filled with oil
you missed one cause that iv seen before, crank case filter plugged up, will cause hight crank case pressure and push oil through your turbo seals leading you to believe you have bad turbos
@@Uc9uE3pKsS6uQ , it's called Crankcase breather filter or Oil Separator Filter. Drivers side by the oil pan. If your truck has a Breather Filter and it gets clogged, it will cause high oil pressure. i had oil driping out of the middle of exhaust manifold and i noticed some steam coming out of blow tube the motor had 40000 miles on complete rebuild but sat for years trucks is not on the road so the only thing i could do is just idle it too get the temp up seems too might of helped but not sure the last person to drive it was my cousin and hopefully he didnt abuse it too cause anything ps the exhaust blows clear though

I need help. 2006 Jeep Liberty CRD Diesel: I was pulling 4k pounds for about 500 miles and the last 80 miles was a solid gradual up hill. I noticed it wasn't going into over drive about 20 miles before the big problem started. We heard a pop. Not a super loud pop but a pop any way. Noticed there was zero oil but was idling fine, just no power at all. It would move a foot and stop so I quickly shut her down. Sent a friend down 6 hours from home to pick it up. He poured a gallon of oil in it and it all ran out. He said a lot of oil was coming out of the exhaust. It doesn't overheat or smell like burnt antifreeze. Also there was no check engine light on but the oil light did come on a little and I added some oil but the oil light went off and never came back on. Did I blow my motor or am I lucky enough that this could be just the turbo or something even cheaper? I can't afford this right now. =(
Also, I do have some small amount of smoke coming from the blow by tube on the drivers side. I always figured that was normal for an engine with 190K. And it still has that small amount. But I have also been told it could be as simple as a PCV clog? Causing crank case pressure to increase and thus pushing oil through the seals on the turbine?
I've had Nissan ZL 30 - 3 LT diesel engine with new turbo , new oil intercooler , new radiator , new injectors put in correctly by very reputable mechanics . Oil still coming out exhaust like spitting droplets . All items above had to be replaced . Engine has been pressure tested , no leaks of any kind and no pressure drop . Could the oil in exhaust be left over residual in the exhaust outlet and exhaust pipe from the blown malfunction of the old turbo . It has sloppy main shaft and was very wet on the exhaust side when it was removed . Is there a way to clear the oil out completely without having to replace the entire exhaust system . The original problem was first black exhaust smoke then very white and motor ran like a gutless low powered "sewing machine " . Anyone with any info please let me know , greatly appreciated . Many thanks in advance . Cheers . Great video Josh and very informative. Best regards from western Australia. PS my vehicle is back at mechanics getting checked over . Waiting for their diagnosis.
