  • PR8 trail leads along dramatic scenery of volcanic cliffs. Ponta de São Lourenço is a peninsula of volcanic origin in the far east of Madeira Island, consisting mainly of basalt, although there are some limestone deposit formations in it, and it has been classified as a partial nature reserve, and while you are there, you can enjoy a range of views.
During the day it is a very sun exposed walk, so try to do walk during early morning or late afternoon.
Car park is free of charge, but gets filled up really quickly - so once again better to skip breakfast and be there earlier.
TO ENTER PARK - There is a small fee to pay (1 euro per person) via scanning the QR code at the location (no cash - only mobile version).
Absolutely gorgeous hike!! It is easy going with views for miles except the last push to the end after the small coffee shop which is very steep. There are no restroom’s on a way other than at that coffee shop (€1pp) and no shade anywhere so wear sunscreen. The wind can be pretty strong at times and mornings in the spring are chilly. Wear sturdy hiking shoes.
Take plenty of water with you as there are no places to fill it up (if coffee shop is closed).
The total distance of Vereda Ponta de Sao Lourenço is 7 kilometres out and back which will take you about 2 to 3 hours. But you can also take a long break at the restaurant for lunch for example which will add up to the total hours spend at Vereda Ponta de Sao Lourenço.
