  • My review on the Alesis Recital Pro digital piano - I bought this piano in 2019 and I am very happy with it. 88 fully weighted hammer action keys, high quality voices, MIDI out make for a great entry level digital piano. I have a written review on my website here: www.pianotone.ca/alesis-recit...

    Hi, thank you for this very nice review! I've been looking at both of these Alesis digitals and I've watched a variety of reviews and thought yours was the most down to earth, especially for a beginner looking to a starter piano! And the other thing, that NO ONE did that you did was to compare the various sounds by playing the same piece on each of them! Thank you for that! I always wondered why others didn't do that, as it is so much easier to "compare" when given the same series of notes back to back with the various voices. Based on this one short review, I've subscribed to your channel and will be following you! Keep up the good work and reviews ... stay safe, keep the music going!!!

    Got this yesterday to do lessons with playground sessions. I have an acoustic piano but needed the midi capabilities. So far I love it. My daughter has her grade 8 piano, and when she tried it she said the keys are a bit more tiring than the acoustic, which is great for finger strength! Definitely worth the money!

    • @PianoTone

      @@chrisrob722 Hey congratulations that's awesome! And yes you absolutely do need a pedal for piano. When you press the pedal down, it sustains the notes that are being played until you let it go - it is definitely a must. You can get a generic one off amazon or at a store, just make sure it has a polarity switch (most do; this guarantees it will work with ANY piano).

      It doesn't cpme with any software, but the onboard user interface is so complete and easy to use that you don't need one (to control settings on the piano). My Roland FP-30 is twice the $ and the user interface on the Alesis is way better (display screen, easy to find and change settings). As far as using USB-MIDI, it is plug and play with iPad/iPhone or a pc with any software that understands MIDI so you don't need any software for that end.

    Would this be a sufficient piano for one just to come home too and practice daily. I am planning on practicing regularly and learning from ground up. I am without any piano history but have in the past played around on one. This would be a first piano. I live in a studio apartment and really just want to learn. Thoughts? Thank you for your time and explanation! Best to you going forward. Will follow.

      Hey Danny! I also live in a small apartment, and was new to piano almost a year ago when I bought this and it has been awesome for me. I really like the weighted keys, and it's super easy to use (all the controls are easy to understand buttons and there's a display showing your settings - lots of other cheaper pianos you need the manual to figure out how to change settings). It also has great connectivity options (direct lineouts for external speakers as well as a headphone jack and USB MIDI to connect to a pc/tablet). And the sounds are decent enough too, piano especially. Hope that helps! Oh and heads up it doesn't come with a sustain pedal but you can pick those up for around $25

    I’m glad this video emphasized the difference between fully weighted keys versus graded keys. I’ve heard of those terms and likely knew of their importance, but for some reason this video truly reminded me that they’re completely different. Appreciate the video, but because the Alexis Recital is not graded, it’s a hard pass.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +2

      Glad you liked the review; if graded keys are important to you, then the Recital is not for you. If you haven’t already, check out my reviews on the Yamaha P45 (www.pianotone.ca/yamaha-p-45-review/) and the Roland FP30 (www.pianotone.ca/roland-fp30-review/) they both have graded hammer action keys. And the Yamaha 125 (I haven’t reviewed yet but plan to) and the Roland FP10 (same keys as the FP30) are good options too.

    • @stolenname94
      @stolenname94 3 роки тому +2

      Yeah it alil hit and miss tbh. I got a yamaha p125 which has graded keys. It sounds has alot under the hood for its price. However Roland's feel better they have much more accurate action to that of a piano and using a more up to date technique. The recital Pro seems pretty cool tbh if I had got it and hadn't tried a p125 I would if got one maybe. But im not a fan of its overall sound but I am a beginner so it would of been more cost effective but I wanted to buy something with a great sound can be used on daws feels like a piano ish and will last years and years. This recital pro looks like a good deal though for what it is.

  • @djba
    @djba 3 роки тому +1

    Hi again Tony ... how does the action on this Alesis Recital Pro compare to your Roland or to a Yamaha? To me, the Yamaha P45 has a heavy touch and your Roland a little lighter. How does the touch of this Alesis compare to those others? Thanks.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +1

      Hi there! In terms of weight / heaviness I would say it is closer to the Roland than the P45. But keep in mind that’s just the weight I’m comparing; the overall feel on the FP30 is pretty amazing (it should be, it’s twice the money). The FP30 has escapement & graded weighting, while the Alesis has non graded weighting and no escapement.

    I really am loving this keyboard. Going gang busters with Piano in 21 Days on it. Could you recommend a set of small external speakers that sound good with it?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +1

      Hey there! Glad you're liking the piano! I didn't know you were in Piano in 21 Days, did you find that from my site or were you already in it? How are you liking the course? Do you take part in the weekly live sessions? (I'm almost always on those).
      For speakers, any "old fashioned" home stereo speakers will be ok. The best thing you can get to really hear your piano clearly without any modifications to the sound (make sure you DON'T get speakers with built in "bass boost" or any other effects etc) would be "studio monitor" speakers; these are meant to accurately reproduce the sound they receive. Good brands would include Presonus, JBL, Yorkville, Mackie.
      I have a CHEAP set (I live in a small apartment so these are fine for me, but not spectacular). Nice thing about these is they have a headphone jack and a 1/8" aux in (so you connect an iPad or something and listen to that as well as your piano out of the speakers or headphones). These speakers also come in bigger sizes as well, these are the smallest ones. Hope this helps!

    Hi sir, can I ask what are the compatible stands for this piano with 3 pedals?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому

      Hi there! The Alesis Recital Pro doesn't have a "custom" stand (for mine I actually built my own stand), but any generic X-brace stand should work, but you should get a DOUBLE x stand not a single - the single ones aren't strong enough for a heavier piano with weighted keys and will be wobbly. Also, this piano can only have a single pedal (sustain) it doesn't have a triple pedal option.
      A stand like this should be ok I would think:

    Hi! I'm thinking about buying recital pro but it'll be my first digital piano ever, so I have quite some questions. It'd would be so nice of you if you could answer them. So there's some of them:
    Are you able to record the song you're playing on PC?
    Will it be hard for me to start playing recital pro if I've been practicing on acoustic piano?
    Is it still worth buying even not for begginers?
    Thank you for the review though. I think you have just decided my faith :D

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +4

      Hi there! Yes, you can record in 2 ways. 1) There is a MIDI/USB out port on the Alesis pro, so any software/app on a pc/tablet/ipad that can read MIDI data (Garageband, Audacity, etc) can record the DATA of what you play (MIDI is just WHAT you played not the sound; then the software/app uses IT'S sounds to recreate it). 2) The Alesis Pro has left and right audio outputs, so if you have/get an "audio interface" (this is an external device that converts audio data into a digital audio stream that a pc can use) - then you can plug the Alesis into the interface and the interface into your pc and then you will get an AUDIO recording of what your piano sounds like. I have a post on my blog at www.pianotone.ca/how-to-record-a-piano-video/ that is more about how to make a piano VIDEO, but it explains a bit about audio interfaces and MIDI.
      And as far as the Alesis Pro vs acoustic piano, the Alesis Pro has fully weighted keys, but they are not graded (so they are same weight across the whole piano; acoustic pianos will be slightly heavier in the left and lighter in the right). People will disagree on this, but MY opinion is that as long as it is weighted that is the most important thing and shouldn't be too hard to adjust. If you wanted to get something with graded AND fully weighted keys it will be closer to an acoustic piano but will cost much more.

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +2

      Thanks! And to be honest, having weighted keys (like on the Alesis Recital Pro) is what is most important; that way you get used to having some resistance when you press keys down. Having them graded makes them even closer to the feel of a real piano, but the weighting is the most important thing. If you get used to weighted keys, you'll be well prepared to get used to playing a real piano one day (if that matters to you). Let me know if you have more questions!

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +2

      @OoOO Wang Hi there! I've never played a Korg so I can't really comment on those. The Recital Pro is half the price of the Roland FP-30 so not really a fair comparison. I had my Recital Pro for a year and really liked it, and a month ago I upgraded to an FP-30 and it is much better, but again - huge price difference. Really depends on your budget and what your goals are. If you are wanting to learn traditional classical piano (sight reading, etc) and hope/intend to be playing on a real acoustic piano often then the graded weighted keys on the FP10/FP30 (or Yamaha P45/P125) might be important to you. If your goals are more to play modern chord based music, then the Alesis might be more than enough, and the keys are still weighted which I think is important. As far as the FP10 goes, it has the same keys and sounds as the FP30 (just less sounds) and it has no built in rhythms, and the speakers are way smaller. It is a great buy - I have read lots of accounts of the FP10 developing noisy keys; I have NO idea if that is actually true or not, but I chose the FP30 mostly for the much bigger speakers.
      I hope that helps!

All digital pianos will have some key noise when you play - this is normal (when the key is pressed down and hits the bottom of the keybed - this is how it mimicks the feel of an acoustic piano key hammer hitting a string). In most cases the less expensive pianos may be a bit noisier than expensive ones. It is normal, but it shouldn't be REALLY loud - if it is then you should consider either sending it back. i don't know if i should get this one or the yamaha p45b..........

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому

      They're both great pianos. The P45 has a slightly more realistic keybed (it is graded hammer action as opposed to just hammer action), the Alesis has line out jacks, and has a display and is way easier to control (on the P45 you have to look up key combinations in a manual to change settings; you can change any setting on the Alesis using the controls without needing a manual). They're both great choices; if getting a keybed that is as close as possible to an acoustic piano (graded) is important to you, then probably the Yamaha; if not I would probably recommend the Alesis. I do have a review on the P45 as well if you haven't seen that at ua-cam.com/video/jAEbrZstwSI/v-deo.html. There is also the new Inovus i88 in this price range as well: ua-cam.com/video/eZUdG0q8VvA/v-deo.html
      Happy shopping! Let me know if you have any more questions!

    • @PianoTone

      Yes, it does come with the little wire rack that I have attached to my piano table. Normally that slides into the piano itself; when i built my piano table I drilled some holes in the top shelf so I could attach the Alesis music stand there.

    Have you played a piano with semi-weighted keys, and how much of a difference does the fully weighted keys make?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому +4

      I have played a few (Alesis Recital base model, Yamaha NP32, and a couple others). They are all VERY different from each other; in general it is a pretty big difference from weighted. The Recital is heavier than most in my opinion, but it and almost all others are "springy" feeling; so they add some resistance, but it's not really the same. The NP32 is lighter feeling but feels smoother than the Recital (and its graded which is unusual for non fully weighted so more resistance on the left side than right), but it is much lighter.
      All that being said though, super accurate full weight only REALLY matters if you want to pursue formal classical piano training, or even if you plan to be playing acoustic pianos in your life (church, school, relatives etc), or if that's the feeling you happen to like (I happen to really like fully weighted). I know pro pianists that gig regularly who use semi-weighted because they're lighter and easier to transport, easier to play non piano sounds (organs etc) and they prefer that.
      Sorry for the long answer, hope that helps!

      @@PianoTone Which one do you think a beginner should get I just want to learn the piano so should I get semi weighted or weighted?

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  2 роки тому +1

      @@rasheemthebestfirstone3274 That really depends on how important it is to you to be able to one day play an acoustic piano (which has a heavy action); if that is something you intend to do, then a piano with fully weighted keys is a better choice to start with, since it trains your fingers to get used to the "weight". If you never intend on playing an acoustic piano in the future, then that doesn't really matter. All that being said though, a semi-weighted key feel like the Alesis Recital:
      (I reviewed that here: ua-cam.com/video/vpH0vtfrHmM/v-deo.html)
      (not the pro) is WAY better than a totally NON-weighted keyboard (like the Yamaha PSR series) and costs less than weighted, so if you don't want to spend the $ on fully weighted, in that case semi-weighted is a good option.
      I did a video on weighted vs. non weighted keys here if you want to check it out:

    • @PianoTone
      @PianoTone  3 роки тому

      There are 12 voices on the Recital Pro; if you connect it to a DAW or VST then you can use the voices in that app/software with MIDI. If you want more onboard voices on the piano itself, the iNovus i88 would be a good option (it's about the same price, weighted keys and has 200 voices)

      @@Gragon The only other thing to consider is whether you can/want to spend an extra bit on the P-225 instead to get the rhythms, CFX voices with VRM and L/R lineouts. The 145 is an awesome piano, but the 225 does offer quite a bit more for not alot more $.
      Regarding the Casio's, I was never as critical of the black and white keys as some others were, but I'm not a classical player (I'm just playing chords on modern songs), but I do still prefer the Yamahas over the Casios anyways.

To just make the same simple chord sequence and scale again and again gives me no idea of the capabilies of this keyboard. TBH, you turned me off buying this. Neither am I classically trained. For many years, I only played non-weighted synths but then bought a Roland RD-150 88-key stage piano/master keyboard, and began to learn how expressive such instruments can be. But blindfold me and block up my ears, and I doubt if I could tell the difference in feel between my SP320, your Recital Pro or a $200,000 Steinway Grand. At the end of the day, it's horses for courses. I just prefer to save money wherever possible and use it for other musical goodies.
