What a lovely wee tour. I do love to explore ruins like this as well. There is always so much history and archaeology.

This is just incredible to observe and realize how much took place there almost a thousand years ago. Without the story-boards it might appear confusing but it is not. I live for this history. It is magnificent to take in, in all its glory. It really astounds me that you are walking where those that built the Abbey once walked, those that lived and perished once walked, and throughout the remainder of those down through the centuries once walked. I wonder how many people see this today and realize any of it. It brings tears to my eyes. Thank you Dan. I will be in N.I. and the Republic in July for a month in 2024.

I'm totally with you, I'm also getting teary eyed in such places when the sheer impact of the realization is hitting, that I stand where centuries ago those that lived and worked there stood. That I'm able to touch what they touched. It's such a wonderous, beautiful and haunting experience.

On our trip to England, we went to a Roman bathhouse in Bath. My hubby and I were totally blown away by being able to touch something that a fellow human had made thousands of years ago. We’re from Australia so our history (not including indigenous), is only a couple of hundred years.

Excellent tour of the ruined Haughmond Abbey … I read that it was active for 400 years until its 1539 dissolution … wow, surviving successfully for 4 centuries during that part of the Middle Ages is an impressive feat. Great work on your part …!

Interesting, love your graveyard and historical tours. I’m an amateur genealogist (20+ years) and have lots of FitzAlan’s of Arundel in my tree (x19 great grandparents and further back so quite in the distant past).

Those abbeys/monasteries were quite impressive - just like small towns. No wonder Henry wanted to get his hands on them. Thanks for all of the history that you include on this channel.

What an amazing ruin! So many interesting aspects to it. I love the shadows cast by the window spaces particularly at the beginning of the video. I have ancestral links (5xG Grandparents lines) to Shrewsbury; Fitz; Myddle; Westbury and Alberbury only back to 1770 at this stage - still actively researching and this is so close. I love that they would have known about this, even been on the same ground maybe. Definitely one for my bucket list. Thank you!

This almost looks like the part where the Heavy Metal band Black Sabbath filmed the video for "Headless Cross". Is this the place? Can anyone confirm this or know the location? That was a really cool walk through of the ruins. It is a shame the tower part was locked. Cool video Bro.!!! Love these old Gothic Abbies and Castles!!!

It saddens me to see people leaving their graffiti carvings in places such as these. But within the window sills I spotted at least one carving that looked to be authentic.
Back then stone masons used to leave their initials and or pattern in some nooks and crannies, mainly windows and doors, as a token for everyone to know that they were the ones having been called upon to finish such important stone work.
It also served as evidence for future projects they wanted to be employed for, to be able to not only say but prove, that they were the ones who worked there.
