    I am horrified that the cemetery is not maintained by the city authorities. Also the cemetery should be locked at night. I understand that it is old but all the more reason to look after it.

    What an incredible cemetery. I am kind of appalled at the state that it is in. Nobody responsible for its upkeep? Three hundred years ago I am sure the people being buried there would never have thought this would be the result of their burial chambers. Is that orange spray paint all over the masoleums or is it orange rock? This is mind-blowing to say the least. I can't wrap my head around it! Nonetheless, an excellent video! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

      I was absolutely APPALLED by the state of this Cemetery. Are those Graves in the abandoned Mausoleums. What are the Tombs on the walls. Whoever is in charge, should be ashamed of themselves. If these were my Family, I would be REALLY PISSED. Give me the name of whoever is in charge. I am going to write them a nasty letter.

      Yes the lack of respect for the site and it’s history was shocking, watching from the US and there’s no real history to admire and see.
      If this was anywhere else it would be protected and cleaned up..shame on the council !…a pity the locals couldn’t make an effort to improve this amazing place.

      @@Allison-hg9vm You clearly dont know how cemetaries work. This is normal natural decay. who is going to pay for the restorations of those tombs? their decendants? good luck trying to find them and trying to make them pay huge amounts of money.
      When YOU will be dead an burried a hundred years later your grave will also look decayed and your own great-grand childrend wont even know your first name. ANd no one is going to pay for your graves upkeep.
      Do you know the names of your great-grandparents or great-great grandparents? do you know where they are burried and do you visit their grave to clean it and do you pay for restorations? Dont think so. So you can stop virtue signaling now.

    To be able to use Esquire as a title you must be a lawyer that has passed the bar exam in the state you reside in ...in America it basically means someone who can practice law. As a title Esquire meaning shield bearer in Great Britain and France as a term of nobility in the middle ages. It applied to the squire of a knight who hope to acquire a noble rank as he rose to knighthood..

      That’s hundreds of years of soot from industry and people’s fireplaces belching out pollution. Many of Edinburgh’s buildings have been cleaned in recent decades to reveal the lovely bright stone colour underneath but some are still covered in dirt. Most famously they attempted to clean the Scott Monument in Princes Street because it was completely black from top to bottom but when they started the process they quickly realised that the centuries of dirt are all that’s holding it together, so they had to abandon the task and in the end they just replaced the most unstable parts with new stones and left the rest as it was, hence the ‘patchwork’ look it has today. Imagine how amazing the graveyard would look if it was all cleaned! Or maybe that would lessen its charm 🤔

      @@deadgoodwalks another bit of info, these types of structures are not considered mausoleums but are Lairs or Lairages which is an old name for a scottish burial plot, for a long time scottish religion was keen that you be buried in the ground (soil) and not in some above ground vault or crypt/catacomb so wealthy families would buy a plot and built these elaborate surrounds and placed ornate grave stones so show off as much as they could.. This whole place looks like it had been on fire at one point. Is all that black on stones soot or mold?

    Did these mauseliums ever have doors or roofs ? Are the people buried in the ground? They don't look like there are any wall crypts. Thanks

      In ground burials, these are not mausolea but basiclly fancy grave surrounds

      the sandstone has had a couple of centuries to pick up soot and smog.. thats what you can see, some occasional homeless fires but mainly soot and smog from the victorian era

    So, are the bodies and coffins buried in the ground with these structures built over them? I thought a mausoleum had the coffins above ground, but I don't see anything like that??

    • @Simon-ho6ly
      @Simon-ho6ly 6 місяців тому

      Spot on, the burials were in ground with these structures built to enclose a families burial plot, scottish religion basically disliked anything but in ground burial which led to things like this being built as a show of wealth

    Your private family mausoleums are constructed or designed differently than the ones in the US.

      Yep, we do have some shelf style ones but they’re not very popular

    • @Simon-ho6ly
      @Simon-ho6ly 6 місяців тому

      they are not actually mausolea but lairs/lairages which is basically a scottish phenomena and tied to the church of scotland being big on in ground burials even for the super wealthy so structures like this became common as a show of wealth
