All cemeteries are beautiful, but a shame it’s not being looked after. The art work and history alone should be enough, but not that many care anymore. Thank you as always.
DNA said I’m about 50% Scottish, which is great. I recently discovered my grandparents are also Roosevelts, and FDR shared the same grandparents. The William Wallace connection really ties it together nicely. Very nice coincidence, and proud to learn of a real Scottish connection.
There is another graveyard that actually gets used about 2km from this site, that probably gets the majority of funds, but i shall ask the localcouncillor if you would like ?
its not ancient. there are no medieval traces left. all has been destroyed by protestant terrorist during the reformation. What you see here is largely 18th century and victorian.
Went to Crathie Kirk a few years ago, and the graveyard is where John Brown (Queen Victoria's "boyfriend") is buried, and he has 2 marker stones - one from his family, and one from Queen Victoria.
Absolutely loved this one. The history was fantastic. Plus my brother lives in Selkirk & that's a place I won't be visiting. So cheers for sharing Dan.
Really enjoyed this walk, Dan. It was worth the surreptitious break from work 😇 Those of us born & living in the USA don't often appreciate how "old" these historical sites actually are. Looking forward to the next one!
Only recently came across your channel and think I've binged all your walks already. If you are ever up in the North East of Scotland you'll have plenty of unusual and beautiful graveyards to pick from!
Really enjoyed this rump through this old cemetery with you. Could I as a subscriber to your channel, ask you please, in the next place you visit, could slow down a we bit so I can try to read the legible tombstones. Breezing by them is to quick for my old eyes. Thank you for showing us William Wallace's site. I like the movie Mel Gibson made of him, though some parts were fiction. There are no William Wallace's today!
Nope, wouldn't marry any family no matter how far removed 😅 Here in South Africa we speak Afrikaans, and we call a church a Kerk, interesting. Although that place is not well kept, it's still hauntingly beautiful, thanks for the walk, be save🙏
Very interesting and really old. I wonder why there's an hour glass in their tombstone? At least a couple of them. Not just Franklin but also Theodore Roosevelt his brother. Thanks, Dan!
My SpiritBox gives many "Templarian Era" type words, having to do with King, Richard, Queens Margaret, Mary and Eleanor, Sceptre, God, Castle, Moat, Jesters, Serfs, Feifdom, Quagmire, Siege, Cremation, Funeral Pyre (burned at the stake) and other names like James, William and Bernard, which are of that period. ❤
There are some stocks in Berwick in Northumberland, just at the side of the old town hall, I have seen this spot a few times. Well they aren't the real stocks, just reproductions but but one of Wallaces arms were hung there for sometime in the day. It would obviously been a different building back in his day but if it is correct then it is a place worth visiting.
Hi have you been to william Wallace monument it's a great place to visit not so good if you're frightened of heights love the vids of cemeteries I'm hoping to go to Drummond's castle one day my ancestral home
Another great video Dan! But I have a bone to pick with UA-cam. I didn’t even receive a notification about this video, sorry I didn’t watch it right away bro. But I actually live just a few miles away from Roosevelts little White House in warm springs Georgia. But appreciate the video and take care!
Well apparently William Wallace was my 22nd great grandfather's brother. A lot of things make sense now. One being that I'm 5'4 but get me angry enough and I'm 10ft tall and show no fear..at all.
My favourites are the older 17th century ones that are decaying and are smaller in general. As you said often with the skull and crossbones/hour glasses. I’d love to see a legible 1500s tombstone but I don’t know if any.
There's a legible one from 1616 in my video from st peters church in Llanbedr, it's not as fancy as the ones in this video but the fact it still exists is amazing
there are no medieval traces left at the Selkirk Church. everything has been destroyed by protestant terrorist during the reformation. This Church used to be a significant Holy site dedicated to Our Lady o' the Forest.
old cemetary they are interesting i wish had a car that would be awesome see at night sorry i havent watch your videos i was sickness that was going on i love your videos
Yeah...that pause thing to read...it doesn't work on Android phones...idk about other phones...so I never get any more info except what you say...sad...
Think sometimes you have to aer on the side of caution walking past these big grave stones. Imagine if one fell on you, be unfortunate. Another great explore & a shame this one is a little run down.
It so happens that a friend of mine from this very town (Selkirk) was actually hurt when crushed under a gravestone but it was the other graveyard in the town about 2km from this site.
I don't think there is an actual grave of William Wallace, as you know he was hung and Quartered and his body parts were placed at all four quarters of England, Berwick being the farthest near the Scottish border.
He also didnt had the right to be buried in a cemetary as he was Roman-Catholic and he was considered an aposate and by most Scots people as a barbaric criminal and a thug. As he was sentenced to death he was not allowed a spot on consacrated ground. ps: it was thanks to the Scottish people that he was captured and trialed for his crimes. William wallace more or less didnt became a hero until the victorian era, the age of over-romantisizing scottishness and writing heroic pseudohistoric novels of chivalry and bravery.

Oh wow thats amazing Dani. Maybe you're linked to the Murrays too
@@deadgoodwalks in fear of sounding stupid, can you tell me who you mean when you say “Murray’s”? I’m still learning about Scotland history.
When will you do a Isle of Bute cemetery?
@@danip3270 Murray was the last name of Roosevelt's ancestors
@@kevincharles1983 Thanks for that! I’m determined to get over there in the near future and learn firsthand.

Great tour Dan! This was a great cemetery. It had character. Love the 1700s stones. Thanks 😊
Thanks Liz. Glad you liked it and thank you for coming to the premiere
It looks ancient! How I adore these time worn archaic places. They take my breath away I can’t wait to visit♥️
its not ancient. there are no medieval traces left. all has been destroyed by protestant terrorist during the reformation. What you see here is largely 18th century and victorian.
The skull and crossbones is symbolic to crucifixion, death and mortality. The hourglass is symbolic to the resurrection of the dead.
Went to Crathie Kirk a few years ago, and the graveyard is where John Brown (Queen Victoria's "boyfriend") is buried, and he has 2 marker stones - one from his family, and one from Queen Victoria.

What a beautiful cemetery. Is definitely worth to be well maintained!
Hopefully they stand the fallen graves up at least

Your walking in the footsteps of Sir Walter Scott who was once the Sheriff of Selkirk, died 1832. I’m sure he attended burials in this graveyard.
