Looking into getting a bit more out of the Ally now, the cooing system here will handle 65watts but looks like we have a lock on the wattage. Hopefully I can bypass this lock so we can do some iGPU overclocking.
I got my asus dock yesterday and it’s done nothing but impress me. I am however wanting to see if the aftermarket chenyang oculink works with this if at all. If it does I’d love to hook my 2060 12gb up to it.
So someone is saying the small screen is a problem in some games. Has that been an issue for y'all? Have you had issues being able to see the in game UI or reading text on the screen?
I own the ROG Ally for three weeks now. I love it and use it a lot docked like a desktop pc. With the latest update 3.22 performance increased, but also the fan noise (they turned up the fan curves). Unfortunately yesterday it burned my brandnew 512gb Samsung SD Card 🙈. I hope Asus gets this fixed asap. Apart from this I am very happy with it.
What Samsung 512 evo plus sd card did you have, did you remove it as intended, first in windows you give the eject sd disk icon and after the information you safely remove it. Go to the disk management tab, look if the sd card is visible, when you find the partition, format it, you should revive the card.
@@leander4107 it was a Samsung Evo plus UHS1 A2 V30. I am pretty sure I did everything correctly. It already worked for a few days. It died when I tried to launch Green Hell VR from it. Tried different VR games with success (but they are installed on the internal ssd). After the update 3.22 I wanted to check out, if there was a performance gain in VR. The card is dead. It is not readable in any of my computers. RIP
My Ally locked up after 322. I did a restore and then it would not read my San Disk extreme 256 which I had been using since day 3. ASUS said to either RMA it or return and get another at Best Buy. Setting up the new one tonight. Fingers crossed it will work with SD cards.

Look for a partition around 480 gb this will be the sd card, click and format, after formatting the card will appear. The card, even if it is invisible by computers or readers, does not mean that it does not work, it just changed something and removed it.
this has a chance to change gaming pc's forever. I would much rather have a small device like this to use as a pc than my big box that takes up a lot of space.
honestly more compitetion is good. honestly the rog Ally is really the only device that has challenged the Deck. Hopefully this will push the market further
In reality it's so much more powerful than the stream deck there is no way they Cn do 4k why with any game dock.mode or not. Literally the z1 extreme is amazing
I have considered getting a Rog Ally to use as a docked PC. The SD is my preferred device for portable gaming, because of the controls. But as a docked device, controls don't matter. If I didn't already own a SD, I would buy this for sure.
What about the mushy face buttons? I have heard the analog sticks are a little bit loose as well. They should’ve put a way to change the tension like elite 2 controllers 💫

Could you please do a video showcasing a ton of games at 1440p medium settings with just the IGPU? Even if they run badly, I'd be really curious to see like a couple dozen game examples to really get an idea of how well it can work at 1440p and say a bunch of old games and new games and simple games like Rocket League, Sons Of The Forest, the original Alan Wake, and Guilty Gear Strive. Really interested in this as my first windows PC and curious how far I can stretch it in this way! Thanks a lot of your videos
I use mine for work now with a quad monitor set up. Its been an amazing buy. Much less power than my 900watt pc. Took some hassle, A KVM with a usb splitter, and the right kind of dock. Never been happier. Still handles games amazingly in quad monitor docked mode. Great for the summer in this intense heat.
I really wish this thing came with 32gb ram. If so, I would for sure be using it as my "everything" pc. I mostly game, since work assigns a laptop, but occasionally I would do personal work on it. My ultimate vision for the future is something like this (or a tablet), with a near loss-less egpu dock for when I get home. 16GB ram is pushing it though for a full time pc, as I can fill that up very fast with some of my use cases. Still though we are so close. If only Asus used oculink, or did something non-proprietary. We desperately need an ePCIE (eSata equivalent). I think with proper eGPU support, one that works and doesn't sacrifice almost half of the perf, you would see quite a lot of people embrace SFF, laptops/ultrabooks, or other small form factor devices (think Surface).
I agree 16gb really just isn't enough, especially when we use 4-8gb as v ram. The XG mobile connector is currently the best on the market though. Just a shame Asus has made them so expensive and only makes the top GPU available. I'd happily pay $400 for a 4060m setup.
@@heroofharo it’s also strange to me that the connector is only available on their expensive notebooks. A Mobile nomad gamer type could justify their eGPU option a lot more if the port was on a well specced $999 class notebook.
Not sure if Asus will release an annual revision. 8000 series with no real GPU bumping out now… but there’s still a market for that with 32GB LPDDR5-7500 like those Chinese products.
For the price it is a great gaming and pc. I work fly in fly out mining camps. Recently had a motorcycle accident so been living of disability until I can have surgery. My game laptop died and no way I could afford dropping 2 -3k on a new laptop. This machine has a great price and still lets me play my games while laid up on the couch. Thank you ASUS!
I honestly couldn't ask for more. The ability to o play basically anything anywhere, given at home, or at work when I'm waiting for my program to finish. 5+ years hand held PCs will be the equivalent of yearly 2020 dedicated PCs
Love my ally. Just got a dock, can't wait to try it out. I'm not knowledgeable enough to fine tune the settings so I usually crank it to the max and deal with whatever comes out of that xD
I wish you would show how loud the fans get. Especially with the latest bios update those fans are loud AF pushing it to 40 W. For some people that is a dealbreaker, especially since when the ally first came out, they marketed how silent it was. Well, it ain’t silent no more…
I just bought the ROG Ally as my new Desktop, so far i am loving it like crazy, my previous Desktop was a mere Ryzen 7 5700G combined with ASRock Jupiter X300, it was compact, but it lacks power, but the ROG Ally is just 10x better than my Ryzen 7 5700G
I'm dying to hear from someone using it as a COMPUTER and not just an extension of it as a gaming system... I just got one and am curious if it really would be useful as a computer as well. Would you be willing to share what you do with it, what it can do, and what you bought for components?
@@tomowens7499 Based on what I hear it should work fine as a computer. Once you dock and connect peripherals, it's practically indistinguishable. Still, 16gb RAM is probably the biggest limitation if you intend to use it for like Adobe software for editing etc.
Would be nice if it had oculink. Would be a potential desktop killer for me. Light gaming/emulation on the go, heavier gaming and content creation at home. I guess I’ll wait for whatever GPD releases in the same form factor, but gd competitor prices in this form factor.

If Asus could just release an Ally Plus or Ally Pro and have AMD release a Z1+ and Z1+ Extreme based on Hawk Point, and then also improve the cooling and allow TDP to go up to 65W, we can finally see what this APU is actually capable of. As of now it's still way too power starved.
The Ally needs more accessories. Besides that expensive add on Asus has released for it,something like a bigger dock with usb ports and maybe a headphone jack or even a external gpu enclosure that can house the Ally.

He’s not that big that he would’ve been a 4 and 5 starter in this team and I don’t see him making 12 a game in points as his best in a season. But plss, test it like a normal PC - I mean normal settings like you would do with the 1060/3gig. For example all games 1080p, high, no FSR. And not every game diferent settings. Want a cheap desktop pc, buy this.. not only is a nice mobile handheld console.. it does pretty good at producing videos and editing videos. And game as good as a ps5 or series x.
I finally cleared GoW again with this thing docked and handheld and it was a very enjoyable experience. I can see myself clearing out more of my backlog with this than I did with the steam deck and having that egpu for a travel setup is awesome 😎
I would be interested in knowing how this could be set up as a media server, not like NAS but something to add HDDs to it to be used for media playback without taking too much space, this is a mini pc so to speak, just lack the knowledge or know how of what's on the market to do this with a small footprint.
I've realised that games on low settings look great cause it's on a smaller screen but on a bigger one, games in 720p will seem like it's been run on an outdated system. Why I am saying this is cause up until now the industry benchmarks were HD quality with 60+ fps on at least medium settings for all systems being run on an 18inch+ monitor. But for the Ally it's "acceptable" because it's from a different segment. I honestly find this whole situation weird.
What's weird about that, have you ever looked into retro emulation on a handheld ,say, 16 bit? Those games were designed to run on like 240p and look like garbage even at 720p on a monitor with upscaling but on a 3.5in screen and they look amazing without upscaling. As soon as the resolution gets higher you have to throw more compute power to compensate. Lower resolutions on smaller screens just don't look as trash as on big screens, that's just physics and the less compute you have to throw at it the better the battery life.

I have to say this is worst case scenario in regards to playing brand new highly demanding games. Playing anything before 2018 should be able to maintain 60fps @ 1080p on high settings. What more could you ask for? Besides a never ending battery.
I changed my vram to 8. I docked it. Witcher 3 on medium/lowish settings runs at 25fps on 4k. 1440p i get about 30 to 40 fps. 1080 is better of course. At 4k, it gets hot enough to cook an egg lmao
Dumb question here since i'm new to PC gaming (and having a ton of fun with the Ally), what do you use to capture the FPS, power, etc. in the upper left hand corner. I don't particularly care for the one in armoury crate. Thanks for all the content!
I would like to believe that the ROG Ally was like a pc/desktop, but Asus binned them and disabled the A.I. functionality of the chips, so it really is at a disadvantage when using it as a desktop, of course you can but it's limited.
@@akifurakif6295 the A.I. portion that was taken out gives it a disadvantage in processing vs the regular chip it's based on, but really if you didn't know it was taken out it probably wouldn't bother anyway, but it is in the back of my mind that it has and I will always think less of it because those functions were taken out.
What makes a good desktop doesn't necessary make a good handheld. A lot of videos is showing the Ally plugged in running at 30 TDP while only a handful even bothers to run it at 15 TDP or lower. Handhelds are not the best devices to play movie games yet that often the games many are playing showing off the Ally.
@@mastersplinter483 Ally is better at what? As a handheld I would say the Switch is even better than the Deck. Nintendo is working on their own dlss so their next handheld console will not likely outperform something like the Ally but hopefully get a PS4 pro performance at 60 fps with much longer longer battery life than PC handhelds. The one advantage Deck and Ally has over the Switch is I don't have to rebuy a game I already own on the PC.

PC handhelds are more of a pain than even gaming laptops. They are niche devices especially since PC games are not designed to be played on a 7" screen and to save battery life.
@@smidlee7747 these handhelds aren't much different than a touchscreen laptop (especially the windows versions) with a built in controller. The screen size doesn't matter much as long as the aspect ratio is comparable to a laptop or monitor. The steam deck has to make more sacrifices than the windows versions and they're tightly locked to steam which I hate. I have the steam deck and it's fun to use but the ecosystem is just to limited right now. My ROG Ally arrives today and I can't wait.
@@toxicavenger6172 Screen size don't matter? What nonsense. The Deck is still a PC handheld. A lot of the games marked "unsupported" on Steam is not because the game can't run on the Deck but because the game isn't ideal to be played on a controller and/or a 7" screen.
Thank you for the video! Can you explain me how are you getting 21000+MB Ram usage and 4416MB vram usage on jedi survivor? I thought the rog ally had only 16gb shared memory in total... Also how are you being able to manualy set the fan on +60°C. In my case since the new bios update the system overrides any manually set Fan speed to +75% when over 60°C
I wonder if the 7940hs with it's higher mini PC wattages and the same 780M GPU (and stronger CPU) will get GPU performance close to this after the official AMD drivers drop and continue to mature. Sure the RAM quite a bit faster in the Ally but I have my fingers crossed that 5600mhz+ ram in the GTR7 and UM790 Pro may still get close with dialed in drivers.since it's the same GPU.
@@mcbain5624 Yeah compare the frame rates and resolution from this Ally video (which also uses 12 CUs of RDNA 3) to the overclocked minisforum UM790 Pro video from last week and the performance is noticeably behind. This is why my fingers are crossed that driver maturity will tighten the gap between them, since as you said, the higher TDPs and CPU strength should somewhat even it out.
My thinking is I have a MacBook for business. I don't need another laptop but I want a gaming machine that's more portable than an Xbox. At the same price point this thing out performs laptops at a similar price and I can hijack any monitor with no- issue. I will mainly play Rocket league, fortnight, COD, some day z and zomboid for the way. As well as gaming I can use it as a desktop if need be. Seems perfect.
It will definitely eventually be overclocked to 7500, people have done it but just don’t have the timings for the processor yet, so it won’t boot past bios.
Feel like what we're seeing isnt what you're seeing ETA. That Dirt Rally footage looked like an awful framerate, also rendering resolution looked like 480p there.
I mean people gonna cry over 720-1080p but this thing is supposed to be played on a 8 inch display first…Apple 1080p phone displays look gorgeous….anything over 1080p on a display under like 11-12 inches is overkill

Ally= best handheld that is best played docked connected to a power supply on your TV. A lot the videos on the Ally is showing it more as a desktop than a handheld.
@ETAPRIME I've just purchased the Legion Go and will be mainly using it in docked mode. Can we see the same benefits for the GO using it in docked mode, like max wattage etc? Also do you have any recommendations for Docking stations for the Legion Go?
Does using an external monitor increase performance, or should the results be the same as long as we're on a 65w pd charger? I know on laptops, if they don't have a mux switch, you can get a nice boost going to an external monitor.

Does anyone facing a problem when the ally is docked to a monitor with turbo mode on, the battery percentage is dropping even tho it's connected to a charger?
Would the ROG Charger Dock work on other handhelds? It would be interesting if it works on the Steamdeck or the other handhelds like the ayaneo or onexplayer.
I returned my ally because using it as a desktop was not the best experience for me. First I had to reinstall stock windows because the one builtin is some kind of weird "touch" version. Some input were super ugly on a big screen, alt+tab from fullscreen game had some weird bug with external monitor. But most importantly, the deal breaker for me, freesync doesnt work if you use a dock, it is terrible while gaming. If only they put more than a single port, we could charge and plug a monitor directly. If you have a usb monitor with power delivery then it might be cool. An other problem I had, I couldn't use my mouse with dongle, had to use bluetooth. Dongle was constantly disconnecting, it works fine with other computers. This "one port do it all" is a huge design mistake for me. You HAVE to use a dock, even for very basic use case. But then it creates issues, with freesync or dongle for me
Can I play it with no battery in? Every mobile device I've ever owned aside from my phone and old AA and AAA Gameboys the battery has swelled and or burst so now the 1st thing I do with every laptop is remove the case and take out the battery, I know this isn't a laptop but I'm guessing the battery is lithium and will have the same issues

One of the primary reasons I bought the Ally was the flexibility to use it as a full pledged PC and a mobile gaming device.

@@tomowens7499 Based on what I hear it should work fine as a computer. Once you dock and connect peripherals, it's practically indistinguishable.
Still, 16gb RAM is probably the biggest limitation if you intend to use it for like Adobe software for editing etc.

Would be nice if it had oculink. Would be a potential desktop killer for me. Light gaming/emulation on the go, heavier gaming and content creation at home. I guess I’ll wait for whatever GPD releases in the same form factor, but gd competitor prices in this form factor.

If Asus could just release an Ally Plus or Ally Pro and have AMD release a Z1+ and Z1+ Extreme based on Hawk Point, and then also improve the cooling and allow TDP to go up to 65W, we can finally see what this APU is actually capable of. As of now it's still way too power starved.
I don't know why ASUS made 2 different Z1 chips when everyone is buying the extreme model and thats what I call "go big or go home"

The Ally needs more accessories. Besides that expensive add on Asus has released for it,something like a bigger dock with usb ports and maybe a headphone jack or even a external gpu enclosure that can house the Ally.

But plss, test it like a normal PC - I mean normal settings like you would do with the 1060/3gig. For example all games 1080p, high, no FSR. And not every game diferent settings. So there is something we can compare stuff....

Want a cheap desktop pc, buy this.. not only is a nice mobile handheld console.. it does pretty good at producing videos and editing videos. And game as good as a ps5 or series x.

I finally cleared GoW again with this thing docked and handheld and it was a very enjoyable experience.

I love my ally and while you are getting great performance from this dock I’m looking at the 6850m Xt, I saw it on sale at Best Buy
I would be interested in knowing how this could be set up as a media server, not like NAS but something to add HDDs to it to be used for media playback without taking too much space, this is a mini pc so to speak, just lack the knowledge or know how of what's on the market to do this with a small footprint.

I've realised that games on low settings look great cause it's on a smaller screen but on a bigger one, games in 720p will seem like it's been run on an outdated system. Why I am saying this is cause up until now the industry benchmarks were HD quality with 60+ fps on at least medium settings for all systems being run on an 18inch+ monitor. But for the Ally it's "acceptable" because it's from a different segment. I honestly find this whole situation weird.
What's weird about that, have you ever looked into retro emulation on a handheld ,say, 16 bit?
Those games were designed to run on like 240p and look like garbage even at 720p on a monitor with upscaling but on a 3.5in screen and they look amazing without upscaling. As soon as the resolution gets higher you have to throw more compute power to compensate.
Lower resolutions on smaller screens just don't look as trash as on big screens, that's just physics and the less compute you have to throw at it the better the battery life.

I have to say this is worst case scenario in regards to playing brand new highly demanding games.
Playing anything before 2018 should be able to maintain 60fps @ 1080p on high settings.
What more could you ask for? Besides a never ending battery.
I changed my vram to 8. I docked it. Witcher 3 on medium/lowish settings runs at 25fps on 4k. 1440p i get about 30 to 40 fps. 1080 is better of course. At 4k, it gets hot enough to cook an egg lmao
Dumb question here since i'm new to PC gaming (and having a ton of fun with the Ally), what do you use to capture the FPS, power, etc. in the upper left hand corner. I don't particularly care for the one in armoury crate. Thanks for all the content!

I would like to believe that the ROG Ally was like a pc/desktop, but Asus binned them and disabled the A.I. functionality of the chips, so it really is at a disadvantage when using it as a desktop, of course you can but it's limited.

@@akifurakif6295 the A.I. portion that was taken out gives it a disadvantage in processing vs the regular chip it's based on, but really if you didn't know it was taken out it probably wouldn't bother anyway, but it is in the back of my mind that it has and I will always think less of it because those functions were taken out.

What makes a good desktop doesn't necessary make a good handheld. A lot of videos is showing the Ally plugged in running at 30 TDP while only a handful even bothers to run it at 15 TDP or lower. Handhelds are not the best devices to play movie games yet that often the games many are playing showing off the Ally.
i have both, and the ally is just much better. all the deck stans were so happy about fw 319 being trash. loll

@@mastersplinter483 Ally is better at what? As a handheld I would say the Switch is even better than the Deck. Nintendo is working on their own dlss so their next handheld console will not likely outperform something like the Ally but hopefully get a PS4 pro performance at 60 fps with much longer longer battery life than PC handhelds.
The one advantage Deck and Ally has over the Switch is I don't have to rebuy a game I already own on the PC.

Some people are complaining about how hot it makes their hands in handheld mode. I've seen people say the back gets so hot you can't even touch it
PC handhelds are more of a pain than even gaming laptops. They are niche devices especially since PC games are not designed to be played on a 7" screen and to save battery life.
@@smidlee7747 these handhelds aren't much different than a touchscreen laptop (especially the windows versions) with a built in controller. The screen size doesn't matter much as long as the aspect ratio is comparable to a laptop or monitor. The steam deck has to make more sacrifices than the windows versions and they're tightly locked to steam which I hate. I have the steam deck and it's fun to use but the ecosystem is just to limited right now. My ROG Ally arrives today and I can't wait.
@@toxicavenger6172 Screen size don't matter? What nonsense. The Deck is still a PC handheld. A lot of the games marked "unsupported" on Steam is not because the game can't run on the Deck but because the game isn't ideal to be played on a controller and/or a 7" screen.
Thank you for the video! Can you explain me how are you getting 21000+MB Ram usage and 4416MB vram usage on jedi survivor? I thought the rog ally had only 16gb shared memory in total... Also how are you being able to manualy set the fan on +60°C. In my case since the new bios update the system overrides any manually set Fan speed to +75% when over 60°C

I wonder if the 7940hs with it's higher mini PC wattages and the same 780M GPU (and stronger CPU) will get GPU performance close to this after the official AMD drivers drop and continue to mature. Sure the RAM quite a bit faster in the Ally but I have my fingers crossed that 5600mhz+ ram in the GTR7 and UM790 Pro may still get close with dialed in drivers.since it's the same GPU.
Probably, but those Mini PCs are usually $600-800 , so getting the Ally and having the option to use it on the go is still the better deal.

@@mcbain5624 Yeah compare the frame rates and resolution from this Ally video (which also uses 12 CUs of RDNA 3) to the overclocked minisforum UM790 Pro video from last week and the performance is noticeably behind. This is why my fingers are crossed that driver maturity will tighten the gap between them, since as you said, the higher TDPs and CPU strength should somewhat even it out.
My thinking is I have a MacBook for business. I don't need another laptop but I want a gaming machine that's more portable than an Xbox. At the same price point this thing out performs laptops at a similar price and I can hijack any monitor with no- issue. I will mainly play Rocket league, fortnight, COD, some day z and zomboid for the way. As well as gaming I can use it as a desktop if need be. Seems perfect.

It will definitely eventually be overclocked to 7500, people have done it but just don’t have the timings for the processor yet, so it won’t boot past bios.
FPS limiter breaks if you have the built in performance monitor on in the latest update.

I don't get how people get mad FPS on hogwarts, mine stutters like absolute crazy on all low balanced FSR, the only cure is to set GOU to auto but I don't want to keep changing this and restart everytime just to play one game...
Ally= best handheld that is best played docked connected to a power supply on your TV. A lot the videos on the Ally is showing it more as a desktop than a handheld.

Does using an external monitor increase performance, or should the results be the same as long as we're on a 65w pd charger? I know on laptops, if they don't have a mux switch, you can get a nice boost going to an external monitor.
The external monitor benefit only comes in devices with dedicated GPU. So no, this won't benefit. Also the laptops without dGPU won't benefit either

Would the ROG Charger Dock work on other handhelds? It would be interesting if it works on the Steamdeck or the other handhelds like the ayaneo or onexplayer.
I returned my ally because using it as a desktop was not the best experience for me. First I had to reinstall stock windows because the one builtin is some kind of weird "touch" version. Some input were super ugly on a big screen, alt+tab from fullscreen game had some weird bug with external monitor. But most importantly, the deal breaker for me, freesync doesnt work if you use a dock, it is terrible while gaming. If only they put more than a single port, we could charge and plug a monitor directly. If you have a usb monitor with power delivery then it might be cool.
An other problem I had, I couldn't use my mouse with dongle, had to use bluetooth. Dongle was constantly disconnecting, it works fine with other computers.
This "one port do it all" is a huge design mistake for me. You HAVE to use a dock, even for very basic use case. But then it creates issues, with freesync or dongle for me
Exactly. According to most video Ally is best to leave plugged in at all times just like a gaming laptop.

Can I play it with no battery in? Every mobile device I've ever owned aside from my phone and old AA and AAA Gameboys the battery has swelled and or burst so now the 1st thing I do with every laptop is remove the case and take out the battery, I know this isn't a laptop but I'm guessing the battery is lithium and will have the same issues
