    Thank you Rhiannon 💕 The best advice I have for any new or soon-to-be breastfeeding mothers is that don't mistake your breasts not feeling full for a lack of milk supply. After birth your body over-produces milk for your baby so your breasts will feel engorged and really full of milk. Once your body figures out how much milk your baby needs it will begin to regulate milk production by itself and your breasts will feel normal again. Please don't make the mistake I made and assume your milk supply has gone because it hasn't! Remember, as long as baby is growing, peeing and pooping they're fine!
    Also, don't compare how your baby feeds to how your friend's baby feeds. Each baby is different, some may feed in as little as 15 minutes and some up to an hour. Some babies can go several hours between feedings. Just because your baby feeds every hour doesn't mean you don't have enough.
    Nobody told me any of this, I had to learn it all from the internet because all the people around me kept telling me I wasn't producing enough. But here I am breastfeeding my 5 month old and Thank God we're still going strong! Sorry for the essay lol

    I'm going to be a student midwife in September and all of your baby videos, especially this one, has honestly helped me so much! I'm 19 myself and don't have a baby so these videos have really helped me understand where mums come from and how they feel. The little word of advice about not giving up on the bad days if definitely someone I will carry forward in my training. Your honestly such an amazing mum Rhiannon, congratulations. x

    Good job, Rhiannon! I've been exclusively breastfeeding my son for 9 months now and it's one of my proudest life accomplishments. Everything wonderful about it far outweighs the few difficult moments I've had. It's so nice for moms to create a safe and non-judgemental space to share their experiences and ask questions. Thanks!

    great video! i breastfed my son for the first 15 mins of his life and a couple of times the following weeks, i then i found out he had a tongue tie and was allergic to my milk and cows milk, i tried so hard and had all the specialists out to try and help me, i felt so guilty and had loads of sleepless nights overthinking it and tbh it still hurts and i still feel so disappointed to this day but he's now 8 1/2 months old and thriving! The best advice i got was to not beat myself up about it, fed it best no matter if it is formula or breastmilk 😊

    I love you and your videos x so down to earth and genuine x I have a 4 day old baby sleeping on me and when I venture out into the world I hope I have the confidence to breastfeed and not feel I need to hide away. It is crazy to think how people even have a problem with breasts being used for what they are created/designed for! And women are made to feel bad about this natural act - not only by men but also by other women! What a world we live in...thank you

    Loved this video. I've been breastfeeding my daughter for 7 months and still going. One thing I would say is if you're having trouble feeding straight away ask to talk to a breastfeeding specialist midwife at the hospital before you leave to get some help. Rather than go home and worry then have to go and find a group etc. The specialist at my hospital was so helpful and I took the baby home feeling much more confident about what I was doing.

    Can I add that the BFN (breast feeding network I think!) are wonderful! My cousin used to work with them and they do little weekly groups run by volunteers where new mums can go along and get peer advice/ help/ chat etc. Often they're in hospitals or health centre type places but I know they're all over the place so definitely worth looking into if you need some support x

    Such a good video!! I have 3 girls 6, 4 and 1. Each with a different breastfeeding journey. My best advice is to express! I didn't do it regularly with my first two girls but did with my third. (After each feed for a few months). It really helped to keep my milk supply up and I had lots of expressed milk in the freezer to use at a later date.

    I think the best thing i did when I started breastfeeding was to go and see a lactation consultant. I had the same problems too at the beginning (so much pain). Coupled with some bad baby blues, I was at my wits end. The lactation consultant was soooo helpful with correcting things I was doing improperly and was amazing at answering all my questions.
    Could you PLEASE do a video like this on your sleep consultant and what she did! Could use a little help with sleep routine. Thanks!

    I have been breast feeding my son Franklin for early a year now. He latched on perfectly from about five minutes old. I have always been happy to feed in public- I've never had rude comments or looks. Had some lovely supportive comments from other parents when out and about too. I have never really expressed much milk as my son hates a bottle. He is going straight onto a soppy cup.
    My daughter was harder to breast feed- she had a terrible latch and I needed to use nipple shields. Had to stop at 6 weeks as she was lactose intolerant.
    Every baby is different. Just because you had a tough feeding journey with one then your next may be totally different. X

    I have a six day old. She was given Similac behind my back when I was sleeping while we were still at the hospital. My baby is on my chest right now and I thought of you and your baby girl, so very happy this video is your most recent!!!! 😆😆
    I don't wear a shirt these days and when I attempt to it stays off as soon as I have to feed. I have one nursing bra and two very comfy bras that I don't know how to describe. 🤷‍♀️ Hopefully I can make some shopping trips in the near future.
    FUN FACT: MY BABY GIRL IS ONLY 6 DAYS OLD AND ONE OF HER BOTTOM TEETH HAVE ALREADY POPPED OUT!
    Something scary that I can say about breastfeeding is that I have drifted into sleep and woke up suddenly while breastfeeding. Sleep deprivation is real! That's why it's very important to sleep! Thank you to my baby's father for being there during a lot of those times because I could never forgive myself if I dropped her. 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
    If you read this I hope to have some replies. - XOXOXOX
    I love this channel so much! Been watching since that video she made bleaching a shirt a few years back! Lol.

    Well done and Thanks for sharing your journey so far - really helpful! ❤️ I'm breastfeeding my 4month old right now. Especially in the first months a feed could last between 5min to an hour so the best advice I have is to always get comfy, have a glass of water and a snack nearby as well as your phone/ headphones etc

    Lay on my bed breastfeeding my 15 week old baby, she is my 4th but this is the longest I've fed exclusively for. My question is that my daughter also called Delilah has started refusing a bottle I think we left it too many days without a feed from one, how did you get Delilah to take one again? Did you just keep trying? This was the best breastfeeding video I've seen. It may of even been me that commented about the feeding in public. I was so nervous at first frightened of what people might say/do and you were in the forefront of my mind the entire time, I remember watching all your vlogs where you sat in cafes so chilled feeding so relaxed & 15 weeks in that's now me 😊 so thank you for sharing those moments xx

    Thanks for the tips! I have been breastfeeding my daughter for 4 months and despite a rocky start of silent reflux and a late tongue tie diagnosis we're still going strong. My question is about giving expressed milk in bottles, what happened when Delilah refused the bottle? Also do you feel Delilah is much more attached to you because you breastfeed her? My daughter won't really settle for anyone but me and I'm finding it very restrictive.

    Thank you for asnwering my question :). You should be proud as breast feeding isn't easy. I breast fed exclusively for 4 days and then we started introducing formula as breast feeding had started making me feel so low that I knew if I continued that it would end up making me depressed. By the time he was a week old he was exclusively formula fed and I was so much happier, as was my son. Its shame as I was told I had a lovely supply and when we had him weighed a couple of days after birth he only lost 3oz. But it just didn't work out unfortunately.

      MummyandBabyBay my situation too. It is hard and there is sooo much pressure from the midwives/ health visitors - and prob even yourself and partner maybe - that it can make or break you x it's a personal call isn't it? It can only be. That persevere thing too, I think you can almost develop a mind block from the fear/pressure. I hope whatever you chose you are happy with though, babies don't need a stressed mum. Cue all the comments on how I'm wrong now! Just my ten pence worth though x

    • @mummyandbabybay3598

      princesscharlott1983 Its so hard! I had lost a lot of blood during delivery which caused my iron levels to drop really low so I literally felt like a walking corpse! It was horrible and I needed all the rest I could get. We all were a lot happier. My fiance was happy that he got to help with the feeds, when I was breast feeding he felt bad because he couldn't help out bless him! It shouldn't matter how a baby is fed. Just as long as they are happy and healthy that is all that matters.

    Why does no one ask how it's changed the look of your breasts? I know it's shallow but it's something that would effect my decision bc I don't think my confidence could handle my breasts looking a lot "worse".

    Hi! I've started your watching your videos when I got pregnant last year. I was looking for maternity clothes related videos. You were already in your second trimester by then and I've been following your journey ever since. Seeing that you breast feeding in a coffee shop and working on your laptop reminds me of myself lol and I say oh, hey that's probably gonna be me one day.
    However, my daughter was born 2months premature and I have to start off our breastfeeding journey with pumping from the get go. I had all intention to exclusively nurse. It was heartbreaking at first, but once you get the hang of it it does become sort of second nature to you.
    So, if you're watching this and like me, you aspire or have intentions to nurse and somehow can't, don't be discourage or don't beat yourself up. If like me, you're baby was in the NICU for a month or have any types of latching issues, don't give up, keep on trying.
    My daughter eventually learned to latch properly but still takes up to 40mins to feed on the breast so, I still pump majority of the time and occasionally have to supplement with formula because either I have to leave her with her grandma or she's going through a growth spurt and I can't keep up by only pumping.
    So, my point to all reading this is, don't get discourage if you aspire to directly nurse and can't for some reason. It is harder than you think. Both you and baby learn to do it as you go, some will latch on beautifully from that 'golden hour' some (like mine) will take a while because of prematurity or for what ever reason. Know that you love your child and you are feeding your child with what ever method you can by breastfeeding (directly or via bottle) or formula feed or a combination of all three, you are doing a great job.
    Love you me videos Rhiannon💕 I do miss the weekly videos but totally understand working from home with a baby is rough. Trust me, I know lol. You are doing a great job with these videos and Delilah is a doll 😍

      hlfbldprincess just wanted to say you're doing amazing!
      I exclusively pumped for a couple of weeks, and it was so tough and exhausting, I was lucky enough to be able to exclusively breastfeed from the breast following that.
      Just well done! You're awesome!

      Anie Davis-Keoghmay I please ask why you didn't bf direct for those first weeks? Was it the pain? I'm going through it right now and am struggling a lot, extremely sore nipples to feed but can express fine. Very time consuming though. Now on day 5 and worry I can't make enough to replace the formula I've had to start giving her, even though expressing after most of her feeds.

    • @AnieDavis
      @AnieDavis 7 років тому

      princesscharlott1983 I expressed to make sure we knew what she was having as she was very jaundice.
      I struggled with the expressing at first too, but it really is a supply and demand thing, and make sure to express in the night as that's a bit milk making time. It was really tough and tiring but worth it as now exclusively breastfeed again.
      I remember it being really painful at the beginning, not only for the boobs, but also the contractions whilst feeding.
      I had really bad cracked nippled at one point, an old school midwife told me to rub breast milk onto them after feeds and it really helped! Once they cleared up (rather quickly) I never had another cracked nipple.
      I asked for more support from my health visitor and ended up having weekly visits from a breastfeeding nursery nurse and went to the weekly breastfeeding cafe. Both of which helped. :)

      I find that if she's not latching on properly, it is VERY painful. As Rhiannon mentioned your entire nipple and a good portion of your areola has to be in her mouth. Her bottom jaw should be pressed against the bottom of your breast and that movement is what stimulating the milk out.
      If only the nipple is in her mouth THAT is painful. If you have access to a Lactation Consultant (LC), I recommend talking to one. Check with her Dr and see if she has any tongue and lip tie, cus I heard that can cause pain too.
      As for your supply. Pump every 2-3 hrs for about 15-20min. Basically simulating what a baby would do, telling your body to produce that much at the same rate baby is demanding. If it's only been 5 days, it's likely that your supply hasn't completely come in yet.
      If you're expressing after nursing, you might not get as much as expressing alone.

    I remember being pregnant and thinking that breastfeeding probably wasn't for me, but it'd be nice to make it to 8 weeks.. We're now at 16 weeks, and I can't see us stopping any time soon.
    I'm definitely not an expert, but I guess things I want to share...
    Stand your ground! - My daughter was born at 36 weeks, and we were in hospital for 8 days whilst she underwent phototherapy for jaundice. I was actively encouraged by doctors to give her formula. But I refused, I compromised and pumped milk, with the plan to go back to breastfeeding (midwives advised me to offer breast before and after the bottle to keep the baby associating milk with breasts). Talking about this afterwards made me realise that that probably wasn't necessary either as her weight and wet nappies were fine, just patience for her body to kick in as she was a little early.
    Ask for help (Health Visitors aren't always scary) - I remember hearing horror stories about HVs, but mine has been a god send. Leaving hospital with my confidence shot I spoke to my HV about it all. And she and a breastfeeding nurse made weekly visits to us and I also went to the breastfeeding cafe ran by the breastfeeding nurse until my confidence was up and I was exclusively BFing again.
    Breastfed babies don't always poop every day - I remember the first time my daughter didn't poo for a week, she went from going every day to all of a sudden just stopping. I was worried, thinking she wasn't feeding well. My HV then informed me, that it is quite normal for Breastfed babies to not poo for a week or two. The real indicator of if they're feeding enough is wet nappies, as long as you're getting plenty of wet nappies it's all fine!
    Primark £1.50 vests have adjustable straps so you can wear them really low under tops.
    Old school midwife told me to rub breastmilk on my nipples after feeds. Not had a cracked nipple since!
    It really does get easier and better. As you and your baby get to know each other and breast feeding becomes just a part of your life, things all start to fit together. One day you suddenly realise that you're not obsessively checking your latch and hold, and that it just happens, and becomes natural.
    On other notes, Mastitis sucks, but it does go away (I too had antibiotics).
    I had my first bit of negativity around my public breastfeeding the other day when some ladies moved table in a cafe I was in. It was something I had been quite afraid of, and it was quite a spectacle they made. But I was ok, I smiled at them and realised how ridiculous they looked. I am definitely not put off by the experience, I think it has actually made me a little more confident, knowing that I can deal with it.
    Also thank you Rhiannon for always talking so openly about Breastfeeding, Pregnancy and Parenting. You're doing awesome, and it's great to watch, and has helped me throughout my journey over the last year.

    my baby is 6 weeks old and im currently going through the hardest time in my life. my baby has severe reflux and is on medicine, it's not doing what I thought it would do and now they think it's a milk intolerance. I just want to give up because I'm distraught seeing my baby screaming from pain 24/7 if she's not sleeping she's crying and it's breaking me down. I feel like im in a dark place and there is no light 😢

      there's a lot of mums on here talking about formula as giving up. yes its not as good as breast milk but every baby is different and your decision needs to be based on your own child's needs rather than a fear of giving in. My son had complex issues with breastfeeding and i combination fed him. the change was instant and after beating myself up about it I realised this was best for him. youre not a bad mum, youre trying your best and your love your daughter xx

    I'm not a mum but when mums say it can be painful to feed, can you describe the pain? I'm just curious before I become a mum one day so I can prepare myself for the type of pain?

    • @ReggieRainbow
      @ReggieRainbow 7 років тому +1

      Jessie When your boob's start producing proper milk (when milk 'comes in' around day 3) they get really hard and full and can make cuddling people painful!!
      Before that, you produce colostrum and baby suckles A LOT to help tell your boob's to produce milk (and because newborns stomachs are tiny, so need little and often). Nipples can get really sore from the frequent nursing and can feel like they're on fire!! Lanolin helps heal them.
      When your milk comes out of your breasts (let down reflex) you can feel a stinging, tingling sensation.
      After you've given birth, your uterus needs to contract down to its original size - hormones released when you feed help this to happen, so you can experience heavy period pain in the first week or so.

    Am so upset and pissed off with myself that I stopped breastfeeding my little boy at 2 days old. There was no support at the hospital where I had him. I was just told it might be easier to bottle feed him as hes was a big baby. I didn't really know what I was doing so went with what I was told. Hes 4 months old now and I still get upset every time I give him a bottle. I feel like ive let him down.

      Amie Wilson You haven't let him down at all - those couple of days gave him colostrum which has amazing benefits. He's fed and thriving now. If you feel let down by the advice you were given, you're within your rights to complain.

    • @ReggieRainbow
      @ReggieRainbow 7 років тому +1

      Amie Wilson You weren't to know that, though - if a qualified professional gives you advice, you tend to take their word for it. My son was 10b1oz and it's only because I breastfed before that I knew to keep at it.
      I formula fed my first and she's perfect. I breast fed my second (and now my third) because I read up on things more and insisted on help from midwives. My other kids are thriving the same as my bottle fed first born.
      You have nothing to feel guilty for - there's plenty more guilt to come for every other parenting choice you make!!

    • @gillibluejay2145
      @gillibluejay2145 7 років тому +4

      Noo!! I think you misunderstood me. I don't think you should say 'breast is best' because it puts it breastfeeding up on a pedestal and can make it seem unachievable for some women. Breastfeeding is the biological norm for mammals it is not 'better' than any alternative; the alternatives are inferior. Human milk is what baby humans are designed to eat so it is not better than cow/goat/sheep milk it is just what is normal for a human baby. I hope I've made sense 😊Apparently 'breast is best' was a slogan made up by the formula companies.

    • @amazon2630
      @amazon2630 7 років тому +12

      Love you make no sense? Breast isn't better, yet the others are inferior? Means the same thing. Why would 'breast is best' be made by formula companies? That just contradicts what they are trying to sell.

    • @gillibluejay2145
      @gillibluejay2145 7 років тому +6

      Amz sorry I guess I'm not explaining myself very articulately! What I mean is that when you say 'breast is best' it makes formula sound normal and breastfeeding is a step up from what's normal. However if you say formula is inferior it shows that it is a step down from the normal way of feeding your child. Formula companies have to tell their consumers that their products are not the optimum nutrition for babies/children but they obviously don't want to say that formula is inferior so that's why they say 'breast is best' in the same way they say breastfed babies get less illnesses etc instead of saying formula feeding causes illnesses etc. It's just a way to twist words to make out that formula is ok when really it isn't even comparable to breastmilk.
