I love how you're so honest about your labour! It feels like it's so taboo to say that you didn't enjoy your labour (or pregnancy) because it's supposed to be this amazing, empowering thing. Thank you for being so honest, loved the video even though I don't plan on going through a labour myself haha

    Love the calm honesty.
The episiotomy part of your story hurt even just to hear about! ouch ouch ouch.
I opted for a "out of hospital" birth center birth with a midwife, so there wasn't the option of episiotomy, epidural, drugs, etc without hospital transfer. But the major upside for me was that I knew everyone in the room very well, having seen the mideife and her student midwife for an hour at every appointment, so there was no one telling me I might get sent home, or not understanding my perspective, which i so appreciated.
Being that I was two whole weeks late, I had to meet with a midwife at a backup hospital just in case (insurance won't cover an out of hospital birth past 42wks). She was very sweet and I would have been just fine laboring there. So she checked me and did my third stretch and sweep. This time, driving home from the hospital, the cramping from the sweep kicked off real contractions (I had to work hard to concentrate on driving and to stay sitting in the car, I was so uncomfortable!)
I labored at home for several hours until about 3am (12 hours later) I just couldn't imagine waiting any longer for the dreaded car ride to the birth center, and my midwife was kind enough to get up and let us in without complaint even though I'd be in labor for a few more hours yet.
I tried to get some sleep, but was in too much pain and discomfort. The whole thing felt a lot like when you have the flu and just feel super isolated in your own world. I spent a lot of time getting out of bed and hovering over the toilet during labor, both because I had a fairly consistent slight dripping of blood (normal) but also I was so convinced I needed to poo. I couldn't stand to be on a birth ball, nothing was comforting. It was obviously not a pleasant pain, but I was in control of my bodily functions, which was more important to me than pain. i knew it was temporary (and obvs everyone has different levels of pain they go through in labor depending on position, etc. Mine never got to be unbearable).
Finally, my husband suggested a bath might make me feel better, and James was born in an hour of pushing, on my hands and knees in the tub, baby still in the amniotic sac (it never broke!).
I had a tear from the way his head was born (charging straight out from the top of his head instead of chin tucked), but it was lateral and not something they could stitch.
Recovery was pretty easy (at the recommendation of my midwife, i barely moved at all, to recover faster) apart from the tear stinging, and i was back to my normal self within a few weeks.
We had some initial issues with breastfeeding, as James had likely been sucking his thumb a lot in utero so he always wanted his hands to his face, but we overcame them in time and street consulting a lactation consultant.
He's 15 months now, and I've so loved following your pregnancy and motherhood journey. So fitting now to think about birth again, as we're going for round two in June!
Delilah is such a sweet girl. Soak up every moment. Soon you'll have a toddler demanding food (James is pulling at my leg asking for cereal) and you'll wonder where the tiny baby days went. She's already so big!
    Anyway, have a lovely week!

Oo this brings back so many memories , I had my daughter 2 years ago , and didn't enjoy my labour at all ! I needed 26 stitches , down there , and by then th gas and air was taken away and I felt all of it 😖 when I think of it it still makes me shiver . Lovely video Rhiannon x

I didn't even have the baby and here I am sitting here crying. I love your honesty. I think a lot of mothers don't want to scare other mothers about labor. It's definitely traumatic, but I wouldn't know how traumatic because I've never had a child however, you're pushing out a HUMAN it's not gonna be all that and a bag of chips haha
My mom had an episiotomy when I was born and she said that was the worst part as well. I want to have children and I've asked my mom several times what the pain was like and she still can't explain it and it's been 21 years since I was born. She had an epidural as well and she always tells me it slows down EVERYTHING.
I am so thankful for videos like this so I can prepare myself when I do decide to have children.
    Thank you for your honesty.

Loved watching this - I gave birth on the 22nd of July and have followed your pregnancy along with mine! It's amazing how labours are so different. I had an amazing 4 hour labour in the pool and didn't have any active pushing session, the midwife didn't intervene she was amazing and let me go with what my body was doing! He came out with the contractions and not much effort from myself! I also had to have stitches but I tore I wasn't cut. I can't wait to do it again, Made me all emotional watching this too! Delilah is super cute ❤️

I'm a 22 year old midwife in Scotland and I have been watching your videos for quite a few years! I absolutely love your videos, and find it so interesting to watch videos like this for my own midwifery practice to hear what made an experience positive or negative for women. You done amazingly in your labour and should be so proud and empowered by what you went through for your little Delilah. Can't wait for all future videos and vlogs, and congrats to you and Doug on your beautiful little girl!
(ps. don't worry if you ever decide to have another little one, in my experience women say they second labour and delivery is far quicker and smoother than their first)
    Love from Scotland x

Loved hearing your story, Rhiannon! I appreciate how honest you are, and I like that you talked about how everything wasn't sunshine and rainbows. Even if you hear that childbirth is tough, I think it's a bit of a taboo to talk about not enjoying the experience. I don't plan on having children any time soon, but I don't think it benefits anyone not to talk openly about the good, bad and ugly about giving birth. I think it helps a lot of people to know that it's not uncommon that giving birth can be a traumatic experience and that it's not always this amazing, magical thing. Would love to hear more about your recovery.
Delilah is such a beautiful baby. ♡

    Lovely hearing your story :)
I have three little ones and all very different experiences. My eldest (she is 3) was a planned section as she was breech. My second daughter who is 2 next week was an induction, I had an epidural and a big blood loss and stitches after. And my son who is 10 weeks tomorrow was a completely natural labour and out after 4 minutes of pushing!
All very different and amazing in their own ways but my sons was the one where I felt he empowerment you spoke about. I felt so much more in control and it was such a nice feeling as I didn't feel that at all with my girls.
Delilah is just beautiful and you guys are so natural and are clearly meant to be parents. Enjoy every minute (even the bad 🙈)Xxxx

Thank you for this :-) My first labour was similar to yours; forceps, episiotomy and overall very traumatic and painful. I had elements of post traumatic stress disorder for some time afterwards. That said, I became pregnant with my second 8 months later and the contrast in experience was vast. Labour and delivery was two hours with no pain relief. I was laughing and joking throughout and it was a great experience. Well done Rhiannon and Doug, you seem absolutely besotted with your little munch X

  • @Emusarecool
    @Emusarecool 7 років тому +1

Rhiannon, thank you so much for sharing your story in such an honest way! Finally someone I can relate to. I get the feeling that people often try to play down how traumatic giving birth can be. That can make it difficult to talk about your experience and get some kind of closure. I had the worst contractions for almost 30 hours and the epidural did nothing for me, unfortunately. I remember thinking and eventually yelling "KILL ME NOW" so many times... I'm glad my recovery has been going perfect so far, that has kind of made it easier for me to deal with the difficult birth.

I love a labour story now I've had a baby and I'm no longer terrified of giving birth. Well done, your daughter is a delight, you did such a good job! I was very fortunate with the labour part of having my daughter, my waters broke very early in the morning, we went to triage and got checked out, given a sweep and sent home. Sat around at home eating bacon sarnies on a Swiss ball and went in exactly twenty four hours later. Went from two cms to eight in under an hour and everything suddenly kicked into high gear, I loved the gas and air and it just about got me through. Only problem we had was that I popped a blister on my lung whilst I was pushing and filled my tissues with oxygen which resulted in a slightly scary stay in hospital with 101tests including various scans, endoscopies, gastroscopies etc.. One of my funniest memories of my labour story was the radiographer asking me (12 hours after labour) whether I could be pregnant... errr, no thanks mate! Enjoy your lovely family and keep the gorgeous baby videos coming!xx

So crazy happy for you both, I legit cried alongside you! I also had a traumatic Labour where I was induced 2 weeks early because I had got diabetics and nobody knew... so yeah, I had around 3-4 days of it all then to be rushed around for an emergency c section! The little one was also 9lbs!! But my little girl is now doing great at 10 and a half months and getting all excited for Christmas and her 1st birthday!!

Having watched your birth vlog and this it sounds like you were amazing in labour. My labour too was a traumatic affair (different reasons to yours). It's wonderful to hear the good, bad and ugly of labour and childbirth - it's not done enough in society (even with one born every minute) x

  • @mebeingmummy671
    @mebeingmummy671 7 років тому +3

Oh Delilahs so beautiful! I can't believe she is almost four months old already! Every woman is different and every labour is different... mine was a good labour despite taking 30hrs, with an epidural and only half an hour to push my son out. The circumstances weren't so great as he was 5 weeks early and induced due to my waters rupturing so I didn't get to have skin to skin for 2 days as he was in ICU and then it took 8 days (including 2 nights away from him) before he could come home with us. Some of the memories still break my heart and others make me humbled. I got to bring my baby home, others weren't so lucky. He is now 18 months old and a healthy happy chap! And he is going to be an older brother come March next year, to another little boy who I am blessed to be carrying. Hopefully he will stay put for the right amount of time! Am so pleased you are taking to motherhood so well, you're a lovely little family xxx

I had my baby in May and your labour story brings back so many memories from the big day. I was in early labour for a couple of days and unfortunately did get sent home from hospital because even though I thought everything was happening, I was only 1cm dilated. The toilet thing really helped for me too and I think it's because we automatically relax when we do sit on the toilet. And I totally relate to you needing to refilm your birth story, I had to film mine a couple of times because there's just so much that happened and baby brain makes it hard to remember what you have and haven't said already!

Oh Rhiannon, I found your vlog channel a few weeks ago and have loved watching all of your videos. You have been great company through hours of breastfeeding my now 26 week old daughter. You are such a beautiful person who seems so down to earth and genuine. Please, please stay this way. To me, you seem to be such a wonderful mother and partner. Delilah is so cute . Well done on all the hard work you have done nourishing her. Isn’t it incredible what our bodies can do. I hope this comment doesn’t come across patronising. I just wanted to say thank you for being my nursing ‘companion’, a really sweet person, a dedicated but honest mother and a really hard worker. Congratulations to you on your gorgeous little family. And remember two things - everything is just a phase and I believe all parents are winging it, they just look like they know what they are doing. Sending you some Irish love from Munich xx

Your labour sounds so familiar to mine. I lasted 24 hours having contractions, from 1AM in the morning on the Thursday morning until she was finally born at 3AM on Friday morning. When I finally got to hospital I was 8CM dilated, the midwife was really surprised how I'd gone without pain relief and was so calm. Only when I felt the need to push did the pain get much, much more intense!! Loved this video! X

Congratulations, Delilah is such a sweet little soul. I had my baby girl Florence on the 4th of June this year so she's not much older than Delilah! So empowering to hear another strong lady talk about her birth experiences as really makes me feel a lot better about mine, and how it didn't go as perfectly as I'd hoped! Well done so far and I've been avidly watching your vlogs, You got this mama 💪🏻 xxx ps I have snapped you a couple of times about delilahs lovely babygros 🙈 xxx

What a little cutie Delilah is! My little girl was born on the same day, and I would say her birth was traumatic too, not something I would like to repeat!! Doesn't make us love our little babas any less! Xxx

giving birth really is no joke 😳 i really can't imagine going through all of this, i had no idea what birth could fully entail! nobody really talks much about all of the nitty gritty details.

Absolutely loved this. I've been following you on your vlog channel but have still been waiting for this! Delilah is absolutely beautiful. My daughter was born on 2nd of August so is only about a week younger than Delilah. I just wanted to tell you that you shouldn't be put off because of your experience. The labour and delivery of my son was absolutely horrific, 27 hours from start to finish, gas and air, pethidine, an epidural, episiotomy and forceps as well as a 3 day stay in hospital. Fast forward 2 years and I had my daughter. Active labour was 4 hours (8 hours from first contraction) long, birthing pool and only gas and air. I gave birth at 4.20am and was home by 6.30am. Every labour is different and I know how scarring the experience can be, the second time round I was petrified but things couldn't have gone better. You're a fantastic mummy and I hope you are enjoying every second of it however trying it may get because trust me I know how hard it can be. Just keep strong and remember they're only babies for such a short time. I look forward to watching more of you on your mummy journey xxx

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I am watching those videos to get an idea of what might await me if I decide to have a baby (and I'm quite certain I would like to have a child in the next few years) but I have to say, these stories absolutely terrify me... to the point where I am seriously doubting I could handle giving birth, both physically and emotionally. I mean, much smaller things have caused me emotional stress I've barely managed to handle. Also, the fact that quite often the staff of the hospital in one way or another don't handle the situation the way the person giving birth would like them to or they don't take you seriously enough etc, that just adds to my fear. I don't know... I know I want to be a mother but listening to delivery stories (which obviously also have good and amazing parts in them) just make my mind go no-no-no-no-no.

I watched your videos throughout my pregnancy and have been waiting for this video to know how your labour went. Mine was horrendous and to be honest it's reassuring to watch someone else describe there's as traumatic because that's how I felt with mine. There's so many people that say you forget the pain when you see the baby but even though I fell in love with my baby straight away, I could still cry thinking about how awful the labour was. I had a horrible recovery too and totally wasn't prepared for how I'd feel after the birth. I really want at least two kids so I'm terrified of having to do it again! As you say though, it's over now and it's time for the good bit, enjoying the baby! :) Hope you and Delilah are well xx

I have three children now and you are very right each pregnancy and labour are completely different I've gone from a particularly dangerous labour with my first where I was critical and could of died, to my second labour which was extremely chaotic as he was almost born on route to the hospital in the ambulance, to my third labour the most recent one which was nice and simple with no problems or chaos. My third baby was born on the 6th July so he's a few weeks older than Delilah and I've followed all of your vlogs whilst you've been pregnant and whilst I've also been pregnant so it's been great to go along with you on your journey also knowing exactly how it is and relating to you so much due to being pregnant Myself. Congratulations again to you and Doug, and I look forward to more of your family vlogs xx

aw ive been waiting for this video for ages 😊😊 absolutely beaut!
i was lucky with my labours. my little girl was almost delivered by my mum; at home. my mum held her head in her hands. luckily midwife arrived just in time! & she was born inside her waters she was 7'11. my little boy was 9'5.5 so a little chunk. but again i was very lucky with my labour. 5 hours with 5 minutes pushing. & although id have another one tomorow, the fact ive had 2 natural no pain relief labours makes me believe my 3rd i will not be so lucky 😂😂 and i still get emotional thinking about it now, and my oldest is almost 4 🙈 Delilah is an absolute beauty and a credit to you. and you are a fantastic Mama and should be very proud 😍 lots of love xx

This reminded me so much of my labour - I got to 8cm before going into hospital and they didn't examine me for ages as they didn't think I was that far! It's the most amazing experience x

I watched your videos throughout my pregnancy. I was also due on 23rd July but my little girl came early on the 17th. She was a tiny 5lb. Your labour was similar to mine, no birth plan as such, although I had hoped to use the birthing pool. I ended up with an epidural, my waters being broken for me (ouch) and being induced. I also had the cut and lost a lot of blood. We also needed a ventouse as my little girl did not want to come out, her poor little cone head took a few months to disappear! Then to top it off after a traumatic labour, my other half contracted pneumonia the day after she was born and I caught a chest infection; the first 4/5 weeks after she was born were horrendous. She is now 18 weeks and an absolute sweetheart & also a complete drama queen! It was really nice to hear your labour story and read the others in the comments too. Haha, while watching I had to keep checking my baby monitor as I thought Delilah in the background was my little one!
