My husband and I have been doing missionary work in Labadee since 2015. We have many many friends that are employed by RCCL that work in the beach area. We have served in the Labadee Village Baptist Church and the Fort Bourgeois Church (about 20 minutes from Labadee) I can't even express how heart breaking it is to us, to see what is happening in Haiti. We know and love the Haitian people we have met. Closing the beach area will be devastating to the Haitian people. People don't understand how poor these people are.(it's why they are desperate to sell in the artistic village) We have spent weeks in Haiti and until you see how HARD their life is you can't understand. I pray for God's immediate intervention to protect all our friends and the innocent Haitian people. I also pray that God meets their physical needs! We sailed into Labadee in February this year and was so thankful we were able to visit Labadee, it's the only way now we can physically get to see our friends. God help them!
I just got off that “ship” we were there 3/12 and it was gorgeous 🤩 we did not feel unsafe at all but a lot of guests were concerned. I completely get why it has been canceled but man it’s a beautiful port! I booked my cruise 2 yrs ago
I didn't feel very comfortable just going to the shops on Labadee. Those 6'4"" young men got very aggressive. They would grab our arms and try to get us into their shops. They would follow us toward other shops. I wouldn't want to go back there even without the threat of escaped prisoners.
I’ve never done a cruise with Labadee as a port stop. I can’t imagine how uneasy and threatened you must have felt. No one has the right to touch anyone else.
Same happened to us, unbelievable aggressive vendors, they even ripped off my daughter by not including all the items she paid for in the bag. After stewing about it on the beach I went back and confronted them about it. The bad actor who screwed us was no longer there but to my surprise the other guys stepped up and made it right even giving us some extras to make up for it. They carved my sons name into the base of this wood skeleton so he had to buy it what a bunch of scammers, once on the way back to Miami that night we had to pack and after removing the skeleton from the bag it was covered in different colored mold with tentacles sticking out of it. Really gross, luckily we had a balcony cabin and we had a burial at sea ceremony for him, he’s likely still floating around out there somewhere, you are better off staying aboard the ship than doing that shore excursion, that needs to be X’d off the program!👎🏻
😂. Thats an extremely ignorant comment. Before any Haiti craziness cross the border it will face almost 150k strong military force and at least 10M civilians. You should be more worry in the U.S. nothing will stop them from migrating to the U.S. Spoiler alert 🚨 it’s happening already
I was wondering when somebody was going to notice that! If I’m an escaped prisoner I probably want to get off the island, and gee, there are cruise ships here! Hmmm!
Btw…,if 5000 prisoners were sprung…..it suggests there is no law enforcement or governmental groups in charge of the country! It is a lawless country at the moment.
And where would you go if you smuggled yourself a cruise ship? Like that wouldn't be reported. How do you know they have a desire to leave their home. It sounds like they want to live their lives the way they want and run their own country without their government
Royal Caribbean needs to be proactive and suspend all stops to Labadee Haiti . If safety is the ultimate concern for Pax. then the release of 4000 dangerous prisoners roaming the country is a threat. Also liability will be on RC if they ignore the situation!
Yes…..a prison break like this indicates that law and order (aka the government) is no longer in control of the country. What sane person would go into that situation?
They know what they are doing. Alot to take in for RC. Take the passengers out of the equation. Passengers are the least of their worries. Don't take it the wrong way. Do you honestly think they are going to port an 800mil dollar boat in a unsafe location. Your risking damage or loss, not to even get into recovery, if it were to get real. Then you add the PR of harm to passengers. That's alot to gamble with. They will upgrade security and will make a call the minute they feel anything is out of the norm.
Security neasures at Labadee would be totally overwhelmed by an orchestrated gang attack. These thugs know where the easy money is and could target port passengers and potentially take over the entire ship with potential disastrous results.
Actually most cruisers depend on people like you, Tony, Emma, Jay and the rest of the UA-camrs to let us cruisers know what’s going on around the globe. The news lately has problems letting people know about certain things going on. So, much appreciated what you guys are doing to keep us cruisers informed.
This has been in the news for days now. I’m very surprised that you didn’t know about it. So, no, the news does not have problems with letting people know what’s going on.
I'm cruising with Royal in April, just over a month. We're scheduled for port stops in both Labadee and Puerto Plata. I've been to both numerous times however, I'm getting very concerned over this. I hope Royal makes the right decision and redeploys us elsewhere.
we were just in Labadee and Puerto Plata and saw no issues. Had a great time..We cruised and explored with no issues. Of course, always be aware of your surroundings.
Going with the tour guide from the ship makes no difference in whether you get robbed, or not! What makes you think that just because you are on a ship’s tour that you will not get robbed??! What difference does that make??! Many cruise groups have gotten robbed!
The cruise franchise will allow at least one to dock as a crash dummy to see what happens, it will cost them way more money to dick where else. Profit over people
I was in Haiti in the 1970's. It was a God awful place back then. It was when Baby Doc was in charge. I would wonder about the Dominican Republic as well. Why take the chance with people's lives?
I THINK -- please correct me - there is a big mountain range between the two countries, and people in the D.R. think that this is going to protect them. Heck, it's not Mt. Everest; probably not too difficult to climb. Or! Get in a boat in Haiti and float around to the other side -- the D.R. Scary.
When I’ve been to Labadee, there have always been very well armed guards around the perimeter of the resort area. RCI does watch the situation around Labadee very closely at all times.
And its such a shame! Millions are pumped into the economy through the cruise industry! Yet so much of it goes to the war lords. Other Caribbean nations have blossomed with the citizens being uplifted out of poverty but Haiti, oh no. Same 'Ol same 'Ol. For Two Centuries!
I’m very concerned about Royal Caribbean going to Labadee. Almost every cruise ship goes to Labadee and I don’t feel safe going there. I think I’m going to start looking at another cruise company that doesn’t go to Haiti..
DR was a scary port. People sitting with shot guns in front of stores. Razor wire everywhere, even schools and hospitals. And in the hills you could see the military.
Praying the Cruise lines will be aware and take precautions as needed. Always better to know what is going on and be able to make our own decisions. Thanks much
Thank you for posting this. We are on the Carnival Vista right now and NOTHING was said to passengers about this situation. We cancelled our excursion at Amber Cove and are sticking to the port area.
Personally I would not be concerned about the Dominican Republic if there is a state of emergency you will know before you board the ship. Labadee just has a little fence separating the outside. I visited in 2019 on Harmony of the Seas. No one would blame you if you decided to wait this one out. Vacation is for relaxing not looking for more stress.
Right now I would caution against going ashore at Cozumel, Haiti, Nassau Bahamas, and Jamaica. Been to all these places a few times already and with the exception of Cozumel, I wouldn't be upset not going ashore in these places. Stay vigilance folks and don't take chances with your and your family's safety.
Can you imagine if cruise ship passengers were taken hostage? The cruise ship could be be taken over as well!! The Cruise Lines need to get out of Haiti and the D. R.
The Haiti Prime Minister is struggling to stay in power. Gangs have surrounded the airport in Port-au-Prince and he is unable to return from Puerto Rico.

Just got back on the boat. All boat excursions were cancelled. Heard from a passenger on Liberty of the Seas which is supposed to dock in Labadee this week, all excursions are cancelled. Staff was friendly but a lot were listening to radios, cell phones, etc. Probably trying to get news on current situation in capital. We took extra plates of food and drink giving them to the local workers. They were extremely grateful. Wish we could have done more but "ripples make waves."
We sail on April 5 to Puerto Plata and Nassau. I'm already not getting off the ship in Nassau (I've been there a couple of times and found it quite blah) so will be keeping a close eye on conditions in Puerto Plata.... Our cruise is a full rock 'n' roll charter, aboard the Norwegian Pearl, and I'm hoping they might be able to change the itinerary for at least one stop....

Don thanks for the info, Haiti is last port of call on our cruise in May on the symphony of the seas. Hopefully RCCL will make the right decision for their passengers.
There is a do not travel warning for all of Haiti in the USA. I will not go back until Haiti is better. I love Labadee. It is beautiful . These folks have nothing to lose and the ones who think that a few RC guards can hold them back are nuts and to them we are all rich. I know it is over 100 miles away but they are desperate. I wish RC would wake up and take notice.
@@peggyford3801 90% of the US is safe. There are cities I would be very cautious in. NYC, LA, SF, and CHi are all out of control. Look at a map with the political divide. Red states pretty safe, blue states and their cities are out of control but I hear that London has a crime issues along with major European Cities. I'd say avoid it. There are too many loose ends. Either sea day or another port. I'm sure they rely on the income from cruises but safety first.
Such a sad situation ~Labadee is such a beautiful destination!!
I was thinking about DR and that I don't currently have plans to go right now, I would really think twice before even entertaining the itinerary.
Sad we all have to be careful and look over our shoulders all the time especially on vacation.
I wouldn’t travel to the United States either right now.
Great point! I'm sure the US is a level 4 for others! @@peggyford3801
Haiti has people who are starving and desperate with 4000 escaped convicts who have absolutely NOTHING to lose.
@@peggyford3801Then don't. Who cares if you visit this great country?
In 1986, Port au Prince, Haiti was one of the stops on my first cruise. I didn't like it then.
Was that on Princess Sundream?
