As someone who was an Electrical Officer at sea for nine years, although not on passenger ships, I believe the ship did not run out of food because there wasn't enough food on board. It was because there was a fairly major failure of the refrigeration plant for the fresh/chilled/frozen food storage compartments, causing the contents to become unsafe to eat.

That explanation makes a lot more sense than simply running out. Also explains why resupplying might not have been an option.

To cancel the cruise and only refund the passengers for the portion of un-cruised days is unreasonable. First thing I can think of is the insurance expenses passengers paid, plus the fees for changing airline tickets, extra hotel fees, etc. I would never book any cruise with this cruise lines. I do not trust them to put my vacation in their hands.

TUI needs to fire their customer service department, refund the entire amount with additional credits. Though the smartest thing to have done is pay whatever costs were needed to get a resupply done at sea.

It was failure of the refrigeration plant for the fresh/frozen food storage compartments. Resupply wasn’t possible, because nowhere to put the food.

Everything I've seen lately has put me of large cruise lines even more, I'd only sail with the smaller British cruise lines. Our ship had engine failure, and we sat on the high seas for a few hours while they did repairs. They couldn't serve refrigerated or cooked food but made sandwiches in the interim. We couldn't walk through the hallways, which were pitch black, and no toilets could flush. When they cancelled the captains lunch, which we'd been invited to, we knew it was serious.
It was all part of the adventure. Sitting idle in the middle of the ocean, no engine sounds, no air-conditioning, no toilets, little food presented, we mainly relaxed on deck and waited.

Even though Royal Caribbean made the mistake of over-booking the cruise(again), I will definitely give them credit for trying to "make it right" to the inconvenienced passengers. We haven't been Royal Caribbean cruisers, but things like this will make us give them a second look when searching for itineraries that we want to travel to. Seems like they have their priorities in order with having and maintaining good customer relations.

The overbooking is not due to a computer glitch, it is quite intentional. The cruise lines know that a certain number of passengers will cancel. Most of these will be at the final payment point, but a few will be later for various reasons. The cruise lines still want to sail with every available cabin sold because they make a lot of money from on board sales, excursions, etc. So even if they keep the fare from a late cancel, they make more money if they fill that cabin. So yes, when they have filled all the numbered cabins, they continue to sell gtys, intending to put those people into whatever cabins cancel. Every now and then, they get caught. Their algorithm doesn't work and they don't have the cancelations they expected...so they are stuck with overbooking. They handle it the same way the airlines do/did--by offering financial incentives for people to cancel. It should be noted that NOT all cruise lines overbook. What cruise lines SHOULD do if you cancel for an overbook deal is to refund not only your cruise fare, but over the airline costs for change fees or non-refundable canceled flights as well as covering the cost of the insurance if it cannot be moved to a different cruise (some private companies in the US allow the insurance date to be moved ONCE.). In other words, cover ALL the costs, not just the cruise fare.

I took my first cruise a few days ago, on the MSC Meraviglia. I was very underwhelmed. There wasn’t a lot of variety in the food, and the same items seemed to pop up day after day (I spent 2 days in my room after getting food poisoning. It was miserable!). I was surprised that so much space was given to hotdogs and hamburgers. I tried a hotdog. It was awful. Seemed very low quality meat. They ran out of ketchup, and though there was supposed to be iced tea, it appeared at only one of the drink stations, and only for a couple of hours before it was out also. The drinks were served in kiddie plastic glasses, very small. The drinks that were in abundance at the drink station seemed to be raspberry koolaid (way too sweet!), and a lemonade that seemed premixed as well. I stood in a long line one night to get a coke (I bought several (they were out of coke the first night) so I could take some back to my room. My minibar was locked.), and they added a service charge to the bill. Just a few dollars but the point is that I’m the one who stood in line and served myself! And I was told that a visit to the nurse (for the food poisoning) would cost $180. That was surprising, since it was their food that made me sick. I would guess that their Italian food (noodles, and pizza) was authentic, being an Italian cruise line. Well I’ve decided I definitely do not like Italian food anymore. The food stations would close randomly, and be roped off. That food disappeared in seconds! The impression I got from the buffet is that they were looking to do the minimum to meet their obligation. It felt like slopping the hogs (and strictly on a schedule). We have a cruise on another line to Alaska in a few months and honestly, I’m not even looking forward to it anymore.

Same here with my first cruise a few days ago on the MSC. the food was inconsistent and drink stations were diluted or empty. Yes, hot dogs and hamburgers were given to much range as a selection. Unfortunately, I became sick as well, which was uncomfortable to say the least.
I'm sorry you got sick and spent to days in your room.

I forgot about how the roping off food stations like a magic trick, leaving less food available and freshness with remaining open food stations (of course my opinion).

I would be expected to be made whole for my cruise and my non-refundable airfare if they put me on land anywhere other than my final port on the scheduled date of arrival.

Full refund for TUI passengers plus monetary compensation to cover for flights and insurance would be in order.

Over booking is pretty normal in the travel industry - hotels, flights, cruises, etc.. It's a calculated risk because a certain percentage cancel or don't show up. It doesn't always work out.

Got the overbooked email for my October 2022, Navigator sailing. Chose to ignore the email because I couldn't reschedule (traveling with friends) and I got the cruise for "free" as a Casino comp. Never heard anything more. Just excited that RC is filling ships which means they are making money. I could happen because past algorithms say a certain % of people cancel and less people are canceling.

Don, been on several Marella cruises, never heard or experineced anything like it. It is worse because I have sung their praises before. The one saving grace could, and I am being generous, be that it is the parent compant TUI rather than th UK cruise line which is based in the UK.

Great video Don! What a contrast - Royal Caribbean is giving people great choices on refunds/other cruises/FCCs and TUI is stiffing its customers. I'm not surprised there is a class action lawsuit. Good way to insure those people never sail with you again.

Unfortunately the problem cruise ships being overbooked has to do with the deposit handling of the cabins. Because you're not just dealing with Royal Caribbean you're dealing with several travel agencies. Which leads to the main computer overbooking due to confirmation delays or mishandling usually on behalf of the travel agency. What's going to have to be done in the future is to require the deposit to have to be made with one company overseeing the deposit. Guaranteeing the booking placement hold. While also offering a standby class. Which would mean offering a cabin at a discounted rate booking it as a standby in the event that someone cancels. Which would not be guaranteed. Hence the discount booking. However it would guarantee that the money would be returned if there are no cabins available. This way a cruise line can ensure that the ship remains fully booked. And leaves room for adjustment. Airlines book tickets on standby. However cruise lines usually only book standby if the person resides near the port. So that airline tickets and other travel expenses don't have to be reimbursed or even be required.

I've been on Oasis at full capacity with a lot of kids. Really not thrilling. I'd be all over the total cancellation and FCC.

Good reason for insurance traveling with financially and management challenged Cruise lines. RCL is playing the overbook game like airlines do.
