Like you, I too have a fascination with old Japanese cars. When this car was released the advert was..."Wide open spaces..." The centre of gravity is so high that when you go around a corner the most appropriate song to have on the radio is "You spin me round (Like a Record) and even then you are not sure if you'll end up Dead or Alive...
My dad owns one with 300k km. Bought brand new in 86 by his mom but when she died my dad took it and still owns it. It’s in amazing condition and looks and feels brand new.
This is awesome. I found one of these on craigslist this morning. When I asked if it ran, the guy said, "It ran when I parked it...15 years ago." You found the gem!
I had one of those when my kids were young and it was an awesome vehicle. I can't say enough good about it. The only problem I ever had with it was the torsion bars in the rear broke and had to be replaced...
I had one of those we used it to go to Mt.bike races in . Four bikes on top and four grown men. It was a great ride. My kids love the jump seats in the back.
I picked up a 1986 Stanza Wagon myself about 2 weeks ago. wish caem across this video before I saw the old MotorWeek review on it, and got the car for 600$. Has over 219,000 miles on it but runs great. I started laughing when i saw his 50k mile car smokes just as bad as mine. At it doesnt smell like Pee.
I had a brown 86 multi 4x4 in 1990. I was in the army and my friends called it rolling sh!t. Got good gas mileage and the factory ac worked way better than the heater. The winters were very cold in that car, the 2L engine didnt create enough heat to overcome the loss. The tv ads featured the Beach Boys singing I get around as the car passed a semi truck. Talk about unrealistic advertising. Back then tho it was reliable and got good mileage. Till my sister hit a deer. And that was the end of the multi.
Got to agree with the passing performance on the highway. That was a struggle. In the city, the torque would get you around fine with the 5 speed. But on the highway you really needed to ring it out and leave lots of room. The Multi did far far outlast and Dodge caravan though. I had several friends who parents their caravan blow transmissions around 50000km. if you tried, you could get a chirp out of the tires in second 😝
I inherited an 88 Stanza Wagon 4wd as my first car at 16 back in the 90's. It was an amazing car that did wonders in the snow and with cargo. It was terribly underpowed and you had to say a prayer when you merged onto the highway. The worst part was my fragile teenage ego. Friends made fun of the car and I was always embarrassed by it on dates. People all thought it was a minivan. I couldn't wait until I could afford a normal looking car.
Was with my parents when they bought an '87, was unfortunate enough to inherit it as my first vehicle. Loved it. Hit 187k mi when I sold it. Lots of memories. Kudos Ethan, this is an incredible channel. New subscriber.
one night while bored, i scoured craigslist, and i found an 86 stanza sedan for pretty cheap, it was in a small accident but the damage was repairable and the rest of the car was in immaculate shape i've heard about the stanza but havent seen one, or really read up on it, so i did a youtube search, and sure enough this video popped up, sure this is a wagon and not the sedan like the one i was looking at, but after watching this video and seeing how weird yet mundane this car was... i couldnt let myself just walk away from the sedan i found for sale, so i pulled the trigger and bought it, and now im the 3rd owner of a 1986 Nissan Stanza sedan with 92k miles, and i have this vid to thank in aiding me with the decision, now i have a quirky first car story to tell my friends!
While watching this I kept thinking "you totally should drive a PT Cruiser". Nowhere near as old as this Stanza but you wouldn't know that by driving it :)
I feel the need to buy random old crap cars daily. I live vicariously through you! Otherwise my yard would be full of things like this awkward Stanza Wagon
For years I wanted one of these cars, which I always considered fascinatingly innovative. Nissan also offered this car in 4WD, which is the one I'd favor. Random trivia: I believe the car driven by Calvin's parents (of the Calvin and Hobbes comic strip) was modeled after the Stanza wagon...
My dad had the 4wd version with the manual trans growing up. We called it the WEEGEE and took it off-roading on logging trails in northern Wisconsin. Good times.
I have one with 56,000 original miles on it I got it about six months ago it's a 1986 Nissan stanza wagon perfect interior it's just amazing little car and I think you're right it's very rare to find them with such low mileage I have it for sale right now for $3,500 and I won't take a dollar less I live in Portland Oregon and I think it's awesome actually own one of these cars and mine doesn't smell bad at all
My neighbours had this rig when I was a kid in the 80’s. Same colour, except it was a Nissan “Multi” 🇨🇦. They must have been into quirky vehicles, because their 2nd car was an AMC Eagle. 👍
Fun video. This car was ahead of its time, just like the Mitsubishi Colt Vista. Better than the Honda Element, and makes me miss my Mazda5 (it had a 5 speed, too!)
Another excellent video! Many years ago when I was 21 and had some money burning a hole in my pocket (something that's never happened again since), I went to a local car dealership and asked them to show me something sporty. They seriously tried to sell me one of these weird Nissans. Needless to say I didn't buy anything at that dealership. Ended up buying a Subaru XT6 at another dealership, and had a lot of fun driving that little rocketship for several years.
Glad to hear that! I would love to get your take on one. It left quite an impression on me, especially that incredible cockpit-like interior and the ability to do 125+... (That's purely theoretical. Right.)
Big fan of that weird steering wheel. Would love to see how they drive. Have never seen one pop up on Los Angeles craigslist, will have to widen my search a bit.
Well maintained and with a decent set of tires, they handle like they're on rails. I blew through some pretty tight corners at some pretty insane speeds with mine. The brakes were also pretty good for the time. My '88 XT6 was front wheel drive only, AWD ones might handle differently. The very 80s looking steering column was certainly weird, but having all the controls close at hand was extremely convenient. The weirdest thing was the single, giant windshield wiper which fed by a mechanism that made it clear the window better than any two bladed setup I've seen. It was a bit comical to watch, though. One other odd thing is that it was among the first cars (that I know of) to have an electric power steering pump, which I think was done more for packaging than performance reasons, but it worked extremely well. I really hope you can find one. They are a unique and wonderfully weird car, and I'd love to hear your unique take on one. I loved mine, but had to move on to a bigger car when my son came along. That was more than 20 years ago, which should give you some idea of just how much of an impression the car left on me.
My mom had this car. It was silver with a 5-speed manual transmission. It was a good car until my dad messed it up by taking it off road and doing jumps in it.
Do a review of all its features and functions! Youd be the only guy on youtube(possibly the web) to do this and it would be much appreciated! What does the switch by my right knee do??
I bought one of these used. Thought it would be great to have while fixing my other car. That was a HUGE MISTAKE. The exhaust flex pipe and heater core went out together. Had to wait three weeks for a new heater core. Since it was freezing in febuary. I didn't have the paitience or money to repair the exhaust pipe. So I rode around with the sunroof open. They are also a pain in the ass to work on. When the torsion bar suspension goes. You'll think someone hit you. The car had some positives going for it though. Great in the snow, rain and mud. It had plenty of cargo area for its spare parts. I could take naps at lunch with the back seat folded up.
I was 16 when these things came out and certainly no student of engineering Even then I remember thinking that car can’t be very structurally sound with sliding doors on both sides and no door post. I haven’t seen one on the road in decades. I did encounter one in a junkyard recently though
I have heard that when this car is up on a lift with the doors open, the car bends slightly so that the doors won't close. I have not confirmed this , but I'd like to test to see if it's true! 😯
It had a fun quirk you discover when it needs a new starter. You have to drop the transfer case to change the starter, a job the Nissan service manual says is a 9 hour job. I had one that went through 2 starters a year. Fun.
Starter failure never happened on our though we did not have the 4wd…maybe heat soak? Ignition modules would usually partially fail every 115000km. Main engine seal at 200000km…not bad really…did have a defective clutch almost right of the lot, once that was dealt with, it was problem free for quite some time. 8 sparks was expensive, but this engine was pretty bullet proof overall despite being underpowered. Fairly torquey though with the 5 speeds.
These aren't bad to work on. My first car was an 89 GXE. The seats were super comfy. I have quite a bit of experience with this model. Shoot me a message if ya ever need mechanical advise. If it's sat, drain the gas tank first!
Thanks so much!! It's not my music, but there is a list of the artists in the description above. If I can find some more time I'll start writing some music for these! :)
you bet your sweet bippy i can remember baking in the brown interior of a stanza wagon back in the mid 90s while waiting for a friends mother to come out of the store on a hot summer day....
I used to call any tall wagons , like your stanza a miniwagon... too carlike to be a van, but too tall to be a station wagon... example i would consider a PT cruiser or HHR... most of the time based off of a compact car and the Eagle Summit Wagon also falls into this
I looked up this video in an attempt to gain some brownie points on my future stanza wagon. I left with confirmation that I'm just weird enough that it does make sense for me to own it. Talkin bout birds and whatnot. Everyone who owns weird cars has to be inherently weird themselves I guess
Another car somewhat similar in appearance to the Stanza wagon that I've always loved: The Toyota Tercel 4WD wagon. Roomy, innovative, *REAL* 4WD, awesome 80's plaid interior... That's the car that'd be ideal for a Gambler 500 challenge, especially with its low-range "granny" gearing. With that, and perhaps a suspension lift, even the modest 3A-C engine could have driven you clear through the circuit. Looking forward to your future adventure installments-- With a young family myself now, I'm unable to get out and explore the open road much anymore, and I really miss it. Your vids provide a version of escape back to that beloved pastime, which I, and I'm sure many others, much appreciate!
Yes! I just saw a mint Tercel 4WD at the Radwood car show this weekend. So cool. Thanks so much for watching! I'm so glad that you're enjoying these adventures that I'm filming. 😀😃😄
Ah, pleased to hear of another Tercel 4WD still on the road. Good to note you also saw my former Prizm GSi hatchback! Ray's exactly the owner I hoped it might go to, as I see he's done great work in restoring her further. Don't know him personally, but he struck as nice fellow, with similar car/nostalgia interests. One of these times I'd hope to make it down to Radwood in a FWD Corolla GT-S; another AE92 chassis 4A-GE car. That model, in red, was always my dream car. Maybe some day... For now, I'm working on car technology that predates Radwood's by ~20 years...
Hey, the Nissan Sunny had weird teenage years and got tall really fast. The safety on this is a nightmare. Jesus. If any car industry executive suggests a car like that today , s/he will get immediately fired and excluded from the industry for life, with the only carrier option being an ice sails-person in Alaska. This looks like "an empty box on a skateboard". Other than that, yes, the 80s weirdness is something I miss in todays cars.
The 86 North American version was a good improvement on the original design which had incorporated a bumper into the back tailgate to allow for completely flat rear entry and the expense of rigidity and safety. So having the once piece bumper helped. Frontal crashes weren’t too bad in these for the time, but I must agree the side impact protection would certainly be lacking. This would have applied to most cars of the era, though to a lesser extent. The two tone blue still looks pretty good now and these had pretty good rust protection.
We had a gold one in the UK and the rings went in the engine and my father got it reconditioned brand new engine in it. Then my father sold it when we moved to Ireland he bought a pale blue one up in dublin
Ok, the dash lights, brake lights, tach, ect., Sounds like mouse damage to a main harness bundle. With some good strippers, crimpers, super 33+ electric tape and crimp connections, you could fix this if that's what it is. The wires are color coded. There are all kinds of spots for mice up under the dash on the driver side, and by the kick panel. A 10mm socket and Philips should get you visual access. Another thing that can happen is that the windshield corner can dribble down into that area and cause corrosion on harness plugs...
Yep I agree the main harness is probably screwed. It's getting worse too-now the brake lights are stuck on permanently and the tach bounces along with the turn signals. Hope to have some time to dive into it in a few weeks!
I had one of these. I drove coast to coast a few times. Then it developed those electrical gremlins , cost me $800 at least, every time. Gave it away finally. Damn computer box.
Very cool that it made it coast to coast several times. Bummer about the problems!! Mine has developed some new electrical problems. Brake lights are on all the time. Turn signal sounds when headlights are on. Tachometer bounces up and down to the rhythm of the turn signal. It's all very weird. Probably should make another video! :o
I remember that car fondly, loved the sliding side doors. When I think of the crazy electrical problems it developed, I must have had road angels protecting me on my journeys. Because it only broke down in Seattle. It would just shut off and refuse to start in awkward places like the middle of a bridge. It would get towed to a mechanic and then run fine and make me look like an idiot. I’ve dreaded all the modern onboard computer stuff ever since. I’m looking at vans lately and reading reviews about repair costs. Ugh.
Lily OnTheLam....your distributor was going out. The led light emitter or magnetic pickup was getting toasty. It's 2 bolts, and a couple plugs....bout 180 on eBay.
fun fact these share almost none of the same parts as the stanza sedans. 2 years ago i got a pair of NOS stanza wagon headlights. i got good money for them on ebay and they went to poland!
Hello Road ya I saw that one!! I would love to buy it but the guy didn't respond - also I'm 16 and just got my permit :( and I can't convince my parents to bring me almost 3 hours away to buy a car that honesty probably would't even make it home which makes me sad. I even called my local junkyard and asked them to let me know if one pops up in the lot and guaranteed I would buy it on the spot, but no luck yet; and that's the bad thing about new England is the rust!! It's ruthless!
Might be the case for other cars, but for this particular vehicle it's due to the door design. The rear wheel well placement creates a door shape that leaves very little space for the window to roll down.
The only thing I don't understand is why Nissan made the rear seat door windows roll down only a *tiny* bit. If you have children under the age of 5 yrs, it may not be a bad thing. But anyone older than that, I'm sure they'll want to roll the windows down a tad further than that.
Certainly an odd design decision! It was due to the shape of the door. Not sure why they didn't make the door a bit smaller or move the rear wheel back a bit.
@@HelloRoad thats awsome i would love to send you some pics of mine its very cool and its exactly the same as yours minus the cat pee smell also I repaired the weathering molding on the back window I also got a new rack and pin in the stearing. Also my 86 Stanza wagon has 56,000 original miles I recently went to DEQ in Portland oregon to register and passed DEQ no problem. I love my Stanza and would love to send you some pics do you have an e-mail???
Of course! I was just wondering why the heck they would design a door like that. Maybe the Nissan engineers went home early on window design day. I've never seen another car where the rear window rolled down this little! 🤔 I'm not sure they should have even bothered making the window open.
This was my first car. Absolutely weird vehicle. And I loved it.
It is certainly an odd vehicle, right??
Indeed. But the utility was great. It was SO easy to put in band gear when you had twin sliding doors and the front doors open to make such an open space. We'd be DESTROYED in a side collision, but no one thinks of that when they're 18...

My dad owns one with 300k km. Bought brand new in 86 by his mom but when she died my dad took it and still owns it. It’s in amazing condition and looks and feels brand new.
Wow! Not many of these left, especially in like new condition.
There is a guy that uses one of these as a daily in Myrtle Beach, SC. I see it driving around on my way to school sometimes.
Wow! Crazy when another one pops up. My Stanza Wagon is the only one I have seen in Los Angeles in at least the last 5 years.
You are funny and clever! That VCR tracking lines were brilliant!, And love going on tour!! Thank you, Ethan.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you enjoyed the vid!!! :) :)

Hi Man! See your video again, it's very interesting and informative observation. thanks for your time!

loved my Multi. as it was named in Canada.
I always liked them.
Yes! Love these weird wagons from the 80s. I need to find a Tercel 4WD or Corolla All-Trac next.

I know right? I dig the interior on the '84 Tercel 4WD, would be super cool to have on a new car.
These seat were pretty stylish and comfy with the centre armrest too, and they were durable too.

@@whozaskin3639 the tank has been empty for awhile. And I recently bought a nissan battery for my Stanza and she cranks.

That's so funny - I went to those gardens once and couldn't even appreciate them fully because I was so bothered by the smell!
I really appreciate the concept behind the gardens but the odor is likely going to keep me from visiting again. :)
I get it!
Man I still want one
Great episode , new logo, and killer tunes! You did them?
Thanks so much!! It's not my music, but there is a list of the artists in the description above. If I can find some more time I'll start writing some music for these! :)
Nissan Stanza , hermosa por dónde la miren 😍
Love the new logo!
Thanks!! I'm digging how it came out!! :) :)
you bet your sweet bippy i can remember baking in the brown interior of a stanza wagon back in the mid 90s while waiting for a friends mother to come out of the store on a hot summer day....
Haha!
Everyone who owns weird cars has to be inherently weird themselves I guess
u have a New sub from dominican republic 😎
Thanks so much for subscribing!! :) :)
Now it would be classified as a Crossover, wouldn’t it? At the time it was a high wagon. One nice feature was the forward-collapsible rear bench seat.
Nice video. Comment from Northern France' Raf Hood, 5 slideshows.
you're hilarious and unique, I have no idea why you're not at at least 10K
😃😃Thanks so much!! If you know anyone that would enjoy my vids, please spread the word!!
Ah! Didn't know that that Prizm used to be yours! Small world. Haven't seen an AE92 Corolla GT-S in a while. Would be a great addition to Radwood!
The 5-speed manual does 60 in about 14 seconds. But was called out for the need to shift right before reaching 60 mph.
Will they get executed?! Just kidding no.
!
Wow, so your family had two of them! They're pretty rare here in the states. Did you see them more often over there?
GREAT NISSAN.
Hope to have some time to dive into it in a few weeks!
gpwith2zs....... At Yahoo.
Ugh.
Hello Road, that sounds A LOT like a mice issue. Your gonna have to go...uh...hunting. rubber gloves recommended.
Lily OnTheLam....your distributor was going out. The led light emitter or magnetic pickup was getting toasty. It's 2 bolts, and a couple plugs....bout 180 on eBay.
I import cars from Japan. I see these occasionally in mint condition on the auctions.
fun fact these share almost none of the same parts as the stanza sedans. 2 years ago i got a pair of NOS stanza wagon headlights. i got good money for them on ebay and they went to poland!
Yeah! I believe only the engine (and possibly the transmission) are shared.
This is my dream car I've been trying to buy one forever. Anywhere near Massachusetts if anyone's got one for sale lmk
I just saw one for sale in Vermont for only $850! It is very rusty, but might be a fun beater! Let me dig up the link...
Here it is! And it's a manual. But like I said, lots of rust! vermont.craigslist.org/cto/d/1988-nissan-stanza-wagon-rare/6651923005.html
Not sure if you're still looking for one, but mine is finally for sale! :) bringatrailer.com/listing/1986-nissan-stanza-2/
You should buy a Dodge Rampage. Neat little ute from the 80’s
Those are rad!!
That's a safety feature on the rear Windows to stop kids from falling out because the Windows are big
Might be the case for other cars, but for this particular vehicle it's due to the door design. The rear wheel well placement creates a door shape that leaves very little space for the window to roll down.
I LIVE WHERE U LIVE O_O BECAUSE I LIVE IN WOODLAND HILLS AND I GO TO THE JAPANESE GARDEN LITERALLY ALL THE TIME
Nice!!!
What video editing software do you use?
Premiere Pro! :)
Dude I found one for sale at 1k auto trans, What are some non fixable issues it might have. Never seen one or known anyone who has one.
Nice!! I had trouble finding a fuel pump but I think RockAuto has them in stock again. Seems like a fair amount of parts are still available.
@@HelloRoad Indeed it is. Your guess is as good as mine.
Rare))
chassis flex was horrendous !
Very true
Getting strange here. My current car...Nova. My first car, Stanza GXE. Is this stanza 4wd?
Haha! Fun stuff. My Stanza Wagon is 2WD but they did make a 4WD version-though I've never seen one.
The 4WD(on demand) had black bumpers.
how the honda element got a iihs good qualification without b pillars???
Hola gusto en saludarle bendiciones, quiero contarle que yo tengo uno igual a ese me encanta
¡Genial! ¡Me alegra saber que te encanta este auto!
Function over form. So unlike today..
this box needs a mexican tsuru b13 swap, cheap, reliable, not the fastest but less nightmarish
Hey Ethan what did you pay $$ for your 86 stanza wagon
I paid $2200. Mine definitely needs some work though :)
@@timmyarmstrong8004 Yeah would love to check out pics! hello [at] helloroad.tv
The windows only go down that far because they would hit the curve in the rear of the door.
Of course! I was just wondering why the heck they would design a door like that. Maybe the Nissan engineers went home early on window design day. I've never seen another car where the rear window rolled down this little! 🤔 I'm not sure they should have even bothered making the window open.
Hello Road lol they would have been better off making it with those flip out vent windows some minivans have in the third row
For sure!
Slow because it used the same motor as the pre 86 lighter sedan of the cars that started Nissan's decline toward bankruptcy.
it came in a 4WD Also.
Yeah! I recently saw one at the Radwood LA car show.

The ugly end!
