I think whether or not someone needs a leave-in under their gel has more to do with how their hair responds to not using it rather than whether it is being used for hydration. For the ladies who are having issues with their hair when not using a leave-in under their gel, their hair seems to prefer the leave-in as a barrier rather than a humectant gel.
Yes I understand where you’re coming from. The leave in definitely can serve as a barrier for folks that can’t/ prefer not to wear botanical gels directly on their hair.
I’m kinda concerned about the issues some are having with their hair. I’ve recently been trying leave ins under my wash and go . It’s ok but my style is not lasting 6 days like it does without the leave in. I’ve used the Kinky curly and Innersense sweet spirit and both are nice and work with ICH. I’ve decided to keep the leave in during the winter and go back to gel only spring/summer. I also deep condition in the winter every wash day. So far my hair is responding well.
That’s great to know! Leave in is definitely going to impact longevity but it does make the hair feel nicely under a strong hold gel. The cold months do seem ideal for using a leave in especially if you’re in a colder area. Here in Tennessee it doesn’t stay cold for long so I can get away with not wearing a leave in if I want to.
This was great! So happy you experimented with KC Knot Today as that is the only leave-in I use along with KCCC. I definitely understand the use of leave-ins with strong hold non-botanical gels like Wetline/Eco, but I only use botanical, water-soluble gels now.
Applying gel is a much smoother process for my when i put leave in first. Straight after shampooing, my hair always feels super dry so I need to use leave in or it will feel crunchy and weird.
Yes because shampoo is designed to raise the cuticle so the ph of the hair raises. So then your hair feels rough. Then you need to put conditioner on the hair to lower oh and close the cuticles back.
I’ve had this stance on leave ins for the longest time also! I’ve been dabbling with putting curl creams under my stylers because my hair has been super dry lately. I agree with you though - I don’t necessarily know that they’re needed every single wash day
Thanks for sharing!! I definitely think in the colder months it may be something I reach for but other than that I don’t necessarily see myself reaching from them every wash day.
Another great video! I too have been experimenting with Knot Today and Kinky Curly Custard. I used them with ENBBA, a new gel that I love! I decided to work the custard in my hair using lots of water (the same way I do with CM) and then the gel topper. In using this combo I did not notice anything different from using CM, ICH and Bamboo Glaze. The drying time was about the same as well! I guess what I got out of my experiment is that I have options if needed! I’ll have to try Ouidad once I deplete some of my stash. Thanks for the review and your hair looks fantastic! 😊
Thanks so much for sharing! It is always nice to to have options. I been watching a few creators and their experience with ENBBA. I can’t wait to give it a try soon
I tried Miche Lavish leave-in for a month under my gels. It's a good leave-in and very moisturizing, but nothing compares to UFD curly magic as my base for wash and gos. Curly magic provides so much moisture, and the extra hold allows less detangling time on wash day.

You are so welcome! Yes under strong hold gels I can definitely see more people reaching for them especially if you working with dehydrated hair.

Exactly! ❤️
Using a quality conditioner can help with feeling after shampooing 💕
