Great tutorial! I just found your channel, and as someone who is self taught I wish I found it a very long time ago. A lot of what you miss by not going to an art school is the fundamental theories. You can find tons of tutorials that will hold your hand and tell you what to do, but if you don't understand the why it takes you much longer to know how to create great looking work on your own. I look forward to seeing more from you, and congrats on Cineversity!
Hello! Thank you so much. Yes I wish you could have connected sooner as well. Let me know if there is anything I could do to help you out. I look forward to you hanging around the channel. Thank you so much for the compliment on Cineversity! I can't wait to get that tutorial series out the door. I love to share and talk about all this stuff ;) Cheers, friend!
Super helpful tutorial! Thank you for your time creating this one. Subscribed and hope to see more C4D/Octane tutorials in the future, sure will check out your other videos.
Thank you Eddie! I plan to create more videos in 2018. Please be sure to let me know what you would like to see! I will be doing more Redshift videos as well. Cheers and Happy Holidays!
Great! XPresso & MoGraph tutorials would be fantastic. Cloth dynamics would also be great, after following many tutorials I still cannot do cloth dynamics without the cloth self intersecting. How to do this properly? ... Thanks again - Keep up the good work!
Eddie Robbertse thank you for the suggestions!! As for the cloth intersecting with itself, be sure to keep on eye on the collision margin on the mesh. Sometimes you need to increase that value so the solver will not allow intersecting. Also, you will need to increase the solver substeps and iterations so that the calculation is more precise and accurate. Please let me know if you need more info. My email is in the description! Good luck and cheers!!
+Łukasz Kondek Thank you! I really appreciate the feedback! I didn't really know if most would enjoy something related to fundamentals and principles. For those starting out, I want them to have a solid foundation and for those with experience, I hope it was a good refresher. Thanks again and all the best in your future projects!
+Glass Hand Films It's good to refresh even the basic stuff from time, to time. It solidifies all the rest of the knowledge in my opinion. Hi Brandon. Thank you for this great tutorial. Really helpful. BTW I'm interested in building a computer like your new one. Maybe one or two less 980 Ti's though. Do you mind sharing the inside of your case so I can see how you fit 4 Hybrid 980 TIs?
+Baris Seker Thank you for checking it out! This was located in the description and shows every single part in the computer so I hope this helps! pcpartpicker.com/p/Q6kxnQ Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks again!
+Glass Hand Films Yes I saw the parts list. I was just curious how you fit 4 980 Ti Hybrids in that case. I'm concerned about air flow in these and I was wondering how you built your rig. No worries if you can't or don't want to share though! :)
+Baris Seker This case is massive!! That's a great thing though because the case is engineered really well. The radiators pull and push air through it really well. It's all water cooled. Wish I could show you in person how everything mounts, it's just hard to describe through comments. There are 3 intake fans, 1 exhaust, and radiators for everything else (processor/GPUs). You can see on my instagram just how massive this PC is ;) haha
Thank you for your time! I'm not a professionaI but very much like CG so I have a noob's question. I've installed a demo version of the plugin for C4d to test my system, works pretty fine. Now i want to buy a licensed one. Do I need to buy Standalone Edition to make it work? Usually I render in Cinema 4D. Oh, gratang kim have already asked the question... But with the demo version i rendered straight out of Cinema 4D without Standalone Edition.
Yes it seems like the demo is quite different from the actual builds that Otoy will release regularly. They update the plugin and and the standalone at different times so make sure when you do purchase that you match the versions. I.E. standalone version 3.05.3 must match with plugin version 3.05.x. Cheers and good luck with your projects!
Thank you very much. The quality of your tutorials and your renderings are simply amazing. I'm also getting started with Octane. Where did you learned all those stuff about Octane. Is there a professioinal Training or Workshop available? Keep on doing your great work. Thank you!
Hello! Thank you so much for the kind words. Honestly, I started using GPU rendering for a HUGE project that came through Glass Hand. For 3 months we created animations and still images, over 5,000 frames were rendered during that project. So I'm basically regurgitating all that information for artists out there that need that info. I learned everything trial by fire, self taught, reading books, and asking questions to artists that I follow :) . I also have 8 years experience of creating animations and images, also had a great internship before I started Glass Hand. I plan to continue with UA-cam and also want to create a workshop in Louisville, Kentucky for small studios to come collaborate for a few days. Thank you so much for your encouraging words, I hope to talk again soon! Cheers!
Nice. I'm also doing 3D Stuff since 10 years. I rendered with Vray until now. But it seems the developers dont do anything for the new version since 2 years. So I decide to learn a new rendere specially with GPU support. Maybe there is a better Opertunity (skype Facebook etc) to talk about Octane. I know I'm gonna have a lot of questions the next time XD. Cheers
Hi. This is so amazing video! I want to buy the octane plugin, but i have no idea what to buy. Did you buy a 'Fully Integrated Plugins' or 'Standalone Edition'?
Yeah you definitely have to have both. One to work within the animation software (plugin), and the other application (standalone) to accept the render jobs.
Hey I am between the d750 and the d900 case. I see you picked the d900. Do you think you could fit all of your parts in the d750? Im leaning words the d750 because I can actually lift it lol
Hi Brandon, do you think an octane/cinema 4d set-up would be better than say a Maya/Arnold set-up for general 3d rendering, products and other things? Graham, Ireland.
Hi and thxs again for this great tutorial. However i'd like to know if you could give us advices about emissive material and lighting interior scenes (i have so much problems with noise :-(. I think this part is quite difficult with Octane render for C4D. Have you some tips to share? Have a nice day.
Thank you for the comment and great idea, Nicolas. I will be releasing a tutorial series very soon on Cineversity that talks about this subject in depth. I will continue to create videos centered around this subject. Until then, please check out our tutorial that talks about volumetric lighting in C4D and Octane. There are some really good tips in that video that may help you! Thank you, good luck, and cheers!
+Nick Bauer We used the pc part picker that is listed in the description. After that we just ordered all the parts. Aaron and I built it in his sunroom ;)
I have contacted Gumroad. For whatever reason our account was suspended but they never contacted me directly. Very odd. I hope to have this resolved this week so everyone can have access to all files! Cheers
+Matt Workman Thank you, Matt!! Yes, it is possible. OWC offers some pretty interesting upgrades to older/newer mac pros. For example, my old mac pro (early 2009 quad core) could receive a k5000 and handle octane eshop.macsales.com/MyOWC/Upgrades.cfm?&model=517&type=Video&sort=pop&pr=400%2C100000 It all depends on what you have/what you are willing to spend. Although Octane 3 is claiming to work with AMD graphics on final release. Either way it's an interesting conversation to be apart of. I hope this helps and may answer your question(s). :)
+Dave Rickards I have the same Mac Pro so I feel the pain. Basically, once we moved into Octane and NVIDIA graphics we never looked back and that workstation is now collecting dust. I have not tried this before, but I know there are external chassis out there to bring in larger NVIDIA GPUs. This solution may not be as easy as it seems. I can't speak from experience because I have never looked into it: www.coreyrobson.com/post/52451664259/thunderbolt-gpu-is-alive-and-mostly-well
Hey man, great vid!!I was wondering though, I see the four of your 980's are runnning on about 99%, any tips on how to achieve this? I have 3 980 ti's on max performance and they never exeed 80% while rendering on high priorety :s I checked the temperature and is on about 60 degrees so that is not the problem :) any comment is higly appreciated!
hmmmmmm that's interesting! Do you have any other graphics software running as well? Photoshop? After Effects? My 980 ti's are also water cooled, so the efficiency is way higher than air cooling. Any thoughts? Let me know if this helps! Great topic to chat about! Cheers!
Nope, nothing is running besides c4d, sometimes I barely hit 60%, first i thought is was because I had my gpu's on al sli configuration (wich had given me some performance issues earlier) but that wasn't the case. Then I noticed that it is very much scene dependent. on heavier scenes, I got a lot more performance than on smaller scenes(sometimes as much as 30%). I then tested the same scenes in octane for houdini and the standalone version and I got about the same performance as in c4d. It is definitly an interesting topic as i find it a bit strange that my gpu performance is limited to wether or not my scene 'needs' it. My best guess would be that i need to change some settings of when my superclocking kicks in so I'm definitly going to play around with that. Do you have any thoughts on that? I also desperalty am in need of some watercooling ,performance can go down by a lot (even as much as 40% according to tom glimps, the octane master) when card are not properly cooled :p cheers!
Hmmmmm. I have another workstation that is air cooled with 3 980TIs in it. I should look at this later and compare. I promise I will try to get back to you on this :) Thank you for all the great info!!
Actually just had one of my artists check and yeah it looks like our air cooled cases don't go above 80%. This could be a heat issue if they do, because you could cook an egg on ours during projects ;) Cheers!
The Neptune model has been with me for a long time. I can't recall where I first downloaded it from. We have a folder on our server full of test objs to use for tests/studies. I'm sure you can find it online but I just can't recall where it came from. Sorry bud, shoot me an email and I will share it with you.
Really good explanation of your lighting techniques. That trick with the gradient in the roughness channel to limit your cyc reflections is awesome. Gonna be using trust! Question: where did you get your Poseidon 3D scan from?
Octane is one of the world's first GPU based physically correct renderer for production. Meaning it is completely separate from Cinema 4D. Cinema 4D has a bridge plugin, that packages all the scene data, sends it to Octane, and then octane interprets that data and computes/builds the image on your graphics card(s).
+Dave Rickards Yes, it can deliver some incredible results. Octane 3 is going to be OpenCL so it should work with any GPU. We are still in pre-alpha testing of octane 3 so the release date is still unknown.
+Glass Hand Films many do motion graphics in ae and cinema. Im getting tired of the physical render always flickering. I do a wide array of projects and just now am getting into 3d motion more. I do stuff for the nba and need something fast. I use a mac pro 12core with duel d700. I was thinking about waiting until version 3 but feel really tempted to just sell it and build a custom pc. I have been looking at ava direct. Think over all the mac pro cant handle 3d well even if octane 3 can be used with amd.
+Dave Rickards Congrats on all your success and work! I hear you. I have the same system (I think we have spoke about it before ;) ) and I am keeping that workstation just to have at least one workstation that is a Macintosh. I can only offer advice that is from my perspective and experience, but I need/want a workflow that can keep up with my inspiration and creative mind. I don't want to worry with copious amounts of render settings and I want my mind's eye to see forms and lights really quick so I can always build on iterations. I can't really think of a tool that scales so well with the hardware that you buy and allows to do everything I described. So long story short, I would recommend investing in a computer that is similar to my build. Do you need 4 cards in one workstation? Probably not, but the extra money will not go to waste :) I hope that helps bud! If you have any more questions shoot me an email. Best of luck!
Hey man, great video, very informative! I just added 3 1070s to my rig and have it cooled by fans. However, one of my cards hit 70c, which is getting close to the danger zone (85c). I may have remedied this by changing which card is used as 'priority' within Octane settings. You mentioned that your GPUs are liquid cooled, would you mine commenting on what sort of setup you've employed to keep your temps at more desirable/safe levels? EVGA makes a liquid cooling block for some of the newer GTX cards, are you by any chance utilizing something similar to this?
HI Neil, We are using the 980 ti Hybrid cards. Each has it's own radiator. There may be a more efficient way to do this with a liquid-loop but we just used these for convenience. Here is our video showing the setup: ua-cam.com/video/ZCfphJAscSA/v-deo.html&lc=z12xi1bgbyjog1ehj04chjzysof2xd3z4d0 Thanks- Aaron
Maybe you could mention in the description of this video you are talking VERY technical stuff! This is for advanced users only, unfortunately. Hard to follow, even for advanced Cinema 4D users like me...
Hey Jeroen. If it helps, the scene files are all on gumroad for $0.99 with a link in the description. If you have any questions, I would be more than happy to answer them. I promise I will be doing fundamentals and basic videos in the future. I hope you still enjoyed the video and picked up something :) Cheers!
Hi Mr. Glass Hands. I think you are making AWESOME tutorial videos. If I were more advanced I would love to see that someone like you skips the trivials and cut right to the chase. Really good! But I can't follow yet, I am sorry to realize... :-\
Thank you so much! And no worries! Just keep learning and before you know it this stuff will be very easy :) Let me know if I can help in some way. Cheers!
why do you have to put your face on the screen, I mean, the little video thing of your face (don't know what to call it), i think it is too annoying..... Anyway great job on the tutorial, amazing work. I hope, in another video, you dont have to put a little video of your face in the corner
Haha I totally understand. I keep the video up so I don't become a disembodied voice. My goal is to build a community that is not afraid to engage with me. I'm by no means a master, but would like to be present in the videos, as if we were having a conversation. Thank you for the comment and I will consider turning off the face camera throughout the demonstration. Cheers!
Fantastic tutorial!!!! I've been working with Octane for about a year now, but this really expanded my understanding, thanks
+Chris Pettit Thank you! I am so happy to hear that! Cheers!!

im so envy of ur render speed such a amazing workflow
bro
C4D and Octane + NVIDIA hardware has completed changed the way I understand and render scenes. It's pretty incredible. Cheers brotha!
Same for me but with only one gtx980 ;)
Thanks for the great tuts !
Jeez! 4 ti hybrids! I just finally took the jump to one hah. Great little tutorial/talking subject. Looking forward to more
Hahaha yes it's a beast! But I love it. Would highly recommend! Thank you for the kind words! Hope all is well and best of luck in your productions!
Thank you soo much for the tutorials. This has been helping me to become a better C4D artist.
Awesome!! That makes me so happy that you took the time to comment and let me know! That's the best compliment you could give me :) haha Cheers!!

Eddie Robbertse thank you for the suggestions!! As for the cloth intersecting with itself, be sure to keep on eye on the collision margin on the mesh. Would you say that your computer is good for motion graphics?
+Dave Rickards Hey Dave! What type of work do you usually do? With some more info I think I could give you a better recommendation ;)
Best of luck!
nice how much the new pc?
You can check the link in the description for every part I bought. :)
I really can't understand why my renders are looking so shitty ..I think it's a proportion size, can't find a way to check my object sizes :/
This is is an okay tutorial, I guess.
Thankyousomuch
Hey man, great video, very informative!
I just added 3 1070s to my rig and have it cooled by fans. However, one of my cards hit 70c, which is getting close to the danger zone (85c). I may have remedied this by changing which card is used as 'priority' within Octane settings.
You mentioned that your GPUs are liquid cooled, would you mine commenting on what sort of setup you've employed to keep your temps at more desirable/safe levels?
EVGA makes a liquid cooling block for some of the newer GTX cards, are you by any chance utilizing something similar to this?
HI Neil,
We are using the 980 ti Hybrid cards. Each has it's own radiator. There may be a more efficient way to do this with a liquid-loop but we just used these for convenience. Here is our video showing the setup: ua-cam.com/video/ZCfphJAscSA/v-deo.html&lc=z12xi1bgbyjog1ehj04chjzysof2xd3z4d0
Thanks- Aaron
Thanks for the info and the link, I'll check it out!
Cheers!
cheap :)))) like always :))))) really is a super pc. May the goods bless your "temple" of illusions. :)))
+Min Cris Flo Thank you! Yes, I love this new PC. And to you as well!
why do you have to put your face on the screen, I mean, the little video thing of your face (don't know what to call it), i think it is too annoying.....
Cheers!
like for render speed, God its awesome i cant believe my eyes
how fast octane will work on NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M mac book pro??? help
I would download the octane benchmark software from Otoy. That should give you a good idea!
+Glass Hand Films thank you, got it
