How to glue hidden-tang handles.

Hidden tangs, without a pin through the side, are ground with little notches to help adhere the blade to the handle mechanically. Gluing these are more straight forward, as long as your prep beforehand was done right. Fitup and alignment are the most difficult parts of doing a hidden tang, and they're only straight-forward when everything is done perfectly. Usually that's not the case, and it's frustrating and incredibly messy.
Full-tangs ARE easier. Usually. #fulltanggang for the more simple handle construction.

I love seeing the friend in the background shaking his head and then flicking you off.. this is how friends really act around each other.. awesome.. and the knife making is badass.. keep up the good work..
Thank you
Full tang gang all day!!!!
That handle clamp jig is the same thing we fishing rod builders have been using for many decades.
If you guys ever think up of something better, we'd sure like to know. lol
Good video!
still learning so thank for the advice
These videos are literally the best, they are informative, funny, and entertaining. Thank you Sam and Don, keep up the awesome work guys!
Thanks man!
These videos are really great please keep them going
Thank you. We've slowed down on the videos for the time being because of some life things, but I'm still slowly filming and editing as we go along. It's my hobby and I'll keep it going, even if it's at a steadier rate.
I'm working on my first hidden tang, and no videos I've seen talk about cleaning the Vaseline out after bedding, as I've been wondering about. Thanks for the info. Love your work!
One thing we've also changed since doing this video is using wax instead of vaseline. Vaseline WORKS, but is a little too goopy and can cause problems. I had a handle that got too stuck and had to scrap it. Wax on the other handle can be applied to a thin, cleaner layer, and is just more consistent. I've been trying out axe wax and it works well but I think some others use ren wax - same idea, just different thing.
My man! Greatly appreciated!
Just stumbled upon this video.. You guys are fuckin awesome. The back and forth is great and yet informative. You got my like and subscription!
Thanks man!
@@DonNguyenKnives Any chance you could possibly point me in the right direction as far as the best knife handle option for a knife I've owned for awhile (never have been sure the best handle option for it.)
Sam, Brand ambassador. lol.
Brad from Bon Appetit!!
Alicin effect!!
Ya'll boys are funny as shit! Its so funny to see what we do the same and things that are different. In my experience I have seen many full tang knives show back up from glue failure mostly due to putting the knives in the dishwasher (more than once), I've only seen one hidden tang return and that was my sister, who washes all of her knives regardless of me telling her not to do that a thousand times. Bolsters, are also a major bitch to get dialed perfect on full tang blades. Awesome video Don!!! Thanks Sam. -z

Here for the hidden tang cartel 🤘
Full Tang Gang rise up.
Great vid don!
#hiddentanggang for kitchen knives
What is the name of that funny guy next to you ? And do we have some socials of him that we can follow to see his work ? Happy hollidays don !
That's Sam! He's been working with me since I went full time. He doesn't have FB or IG but his youtube channel is Miserable Hair People.
hidden tang for kitchen knives, full tang for choppers. can get away with hidden tang for light choppers, smaller camp knives but depends on wood strength, length of the tang. cliff stamp has a good video on japanese machete where hidden tang failed - although only under extreme use.
A well designed and executed hidden tang I think has potential to be even stronger than full, but that's debatable for sure. Having no holes for pins can keep strength at a maximum
Another thing to be cautious of is when the TANG makes the handle QUEEF! That was funny when you leaned over and repeated the install!
#hiddentanggang all day erryday!
Do you use denatured alcohol, acetone, or mineral spirit to get the excess epoxy off the blade?
For me just acetone
Lovin the vids man! Been #fulltanggang but I can see how hidden tang would allow for more design freedom. I've watched most of your videos but do you have one of full walk thru on hidden tang? Got two smaller knives cut out for hidden tang but Im hesitant on doing them
I don't think I have a full comprehensive video on hidden tangs but the closest one I think is my Designing a Minimalist Handle
@@DonNguyenKnives awesome! Thanks man! I'll check it out. Keep up the awesome work! IG: @NJORDknives
9:12 so is that how baby knives are made?
Is this a 30 minute epoxy? 5 minute epoxy doesn't allow for enough time to work with it in a more careful way.
It's a 24 epoxy, which starts setting up in about one hour. 5 minutes is WAY too short, and isn't great for strength and longevity down the road.
@@DonNguyenKnives Thanks! I just had to start over on a hidden tang because my epoxy started setting before I could even get the handle and pin on!
I saw a Japanese knife maker use hot glue to set his blades into his handles that makes them removable by putting them in an oven add 200° then being able to remove the handle what do you think I’m doing some test for myself I thought the key to Japanese life making was a removable handle ?? I’m trying to stick of half inch hot glue instead of the dowel method he says it gives you about two or three minutes to set the handle before it hardens
I dunno that sketches me out a little. Night never ever be a problem but to me that's not the type of elegant solution I personally would do. I'm definitely looking at ways to do a removable handle and the takedown approaches so far are the most appealing.
Did you ever have any issues with hydrolock when inserting the tang ? It always seems to be a pain in my arse. Great video don , Cheers.
Are you hydrolocking it to the point where it's bending the tang????! I haven't noticed it on mine. Pressing it in will just squeeze out the epoxy and then I clamp to get it tight. Haven't noticed any crazy pressure issues or anything
@@DonNguyenKnives interesting, maybe i'm trying to make the tang hole too tight cause when i go to push the last inch in (haha) the pressure just pushes it back out. Or maybe i'm not putting enough epoxy in to reduce the air trapped in there. More testing needed i think. Cheers sir.
@@wiaknives could always file a thin groove running down either side of the tang to allow the excess epoxy to escape 👍
@@CabinetFramingUK might be worth a try, cheers.
Funny and informative and love the technical term "dick it in and out" funny as hell👏🤭
It's the proper technique
Wouldn't using syringe be way easier to put the epoxy into the handle ?
Well the way you do it is more ecological i guess...
#fulltanggang! Lol!
Hands up if Hinoki sent you here after your knife handle came out after a couple weeks because they don't stand behind their product
#fulltanggang
HOW DARE
