Here is my 700 mile Cessna 150 flight with a 35-40 knot headwind. It took 2 days and 13 hours of flight time. The audio was garbage, so I did the best I could to tell the story.
Sad to see the 150 go (I'm a little biased, I love mine), but I'm glad she went to someone who's flying the wings off her. Can't wait to see the new content from the 182.
I need to dust off the old GoPro and make some 182 content. I want to do a short field takeoff video and a demonstration of the capabilities of my new Garmin panel.
Very similar to a trip I flew with my brother. Sioux Falls SD to Salome AZ (1450 miles) in our Cessna 175. 40 kts on the nose for 2½ days, 19 hours total air time. Flew 500 - 1000 feet most of the way to stay out of the turbulence and lost our transponder somewhere over Oklahoma. It's not an adventure if you don't have some excitement.

Man, a 150 in great condition like that is a true unicorn! I have been looking for a 150/152 to start my flight training with. Sure, I can rent, by why not go ahead and by a great little time builder? About nine months ago the price of anything airworthy pretty much doubled. No fun.
You used to be able to pick one up for $16-18K. I bought this one for 24K and sold it for a little more a year later. Low time engine and pretty nice cosmetically. I've seen some lately where guys are asking for over $50,000. I think that's crazy. We were flying around for $20 per hour in gas. Great little time builder.
@@quinnjim Yeah, the days of finding anything airworthy for under $30K are long gone. I'm disappointed that I missed the boat, and also that I waited for so long to fulfil my lifelong ambition to get my PP-SEL certificate. My wife finally got tired of me looking skyward every time a GA aircraft flew overhead, and told me to get busy.
@@MartinSage While waiting for my flight training instructor this morning a nice 150/150 dropped in at KSEP. Beautifully restored on the inside and out. Had stall vanes and STOL stuff. Very nice, $55K. About 245 hours on the engine since the STD was installed.
It's essential to lean Continental engines on the ground to avoid overheating and reduced engine life. Pilots with Lycoming engines tend to run them full rich on the ground, and as a result they must deal with spark plug fouling as shown in this video.

Similar experience but definitely not as bad haha. Just did my commercial cross country in my Cessna 150. 55-60 kt ground speed the whole way up, but was looking forward to the next morning figuring I’d have a pretty good tail wind. Of course I woke up and all the winds had completely died down

I watched a hot tent camping video last week that then had I think it was over 2 million views in just 2-3 days. The video was posted on 12/17, he now has over 12.6 million views just for that one video, in what 12 days?
@@thesearcherman6652 That's pretty good. I'm torn about putting more hunting stuff on this channel. It seems like successful channels stick to one thing. Guns seem to offend people. Some of my biggest videos are of gun stuff, so maybe it doesn't matter.
Enjoyed the video and appreciate the upload. I'm currently flying a 1965 150E. Wanted to mention I had landed at Sallisaw in 1990 in a Cessna 140. It looks the same...but a nice stop even back then.
Love your videos. Just to clarify, the KC-135 is not a 707 based tanker. The 707 was derived from the same prototype. The KC-135 is closer to the prototype 717-80 with a narrower and shorter body and wings swept from the root. The 707 wing sweep is farther out and the wing is longer.
I liked the efficiency of the 150. I could have bought 3 Cessna 150's for the price of my 182 engine/prop overhaul. I think getting 3 guys together to but a 150 is one of the easiest ways to get in to aviation with minimal risk. I kind of miss the plane (would have been much better for teaching my son), but having 4 seats and flying at 135 knots is MUCH better!
There wasn't a better winds aloft then that? I eliminated my (172N) mag issue by taxiing lean to run-up area. I thought about selling my 172 and getting a 182 but I rarely carry passengers. Performance increase to fly mostly solo with a higher operating cost per hr wasn't worth it for me.
Jim, as always thanks for your videos, and also for answering everyone's questions. Here's another one for you. I noticed that you had a Garmin 296 in the 150 panel. I recently bought a 1947 Cessna 140. I still have my old 296 from years ago and was able to get all the updates so it works fine. And of course I have foreflight on my iPad mini and iPhone. Here's the question-- do you think it's worth it to install the old 296 in the panel, or should I get a newer Garmin aera 660... or just stick with firelight yoke mounted? I'm not flying any major missions, but there are a lot of places to go in the North East where I live, and I like the redundancy. Do you find the 296 useful enough or is it best to upgrade? Thanks so much!
The 296 is great. It gives you everything you need. My 182 has a 496 in the panel (very similar to the 296). When I put my new IFR panel in, the shop wanted to pull the 496 out. NO WAY! I use it all the time as a reference. It's a nice backup in case my GNC 355 fails too.
Hey John, or other pilots who might be able to answer a couple of questions that I have. I have always been interested in aviation and I would love to become a pilot but I don't know if my disability would automatically disqualify me from becoming a pilot. I was wondering if any of you would know if Paramyatonia Congenita (Form Of Muscular Dystrophy) would be an automatic disqualification for becoming a pilot. I was also wondering how much it would cost to get a pilot's license and how many flight training hours it would take to get one. I'd be real grateful if someone could let me know.
I have a friend who is a major airline pilot with Muscular Dystrophy. He manages it with medication and can fly airliners. Eventually, it may end up disqualifying him as he ages. I think you should be able to get a license. In the U.S., a Private license costs about $10,000-$12,000. It takes a minimum of 40 hours of flight training, but the national average is about 80 hours. Go to your local airport and see if the flight school offers a "discovery flight". That is a cheap way to fly around for 30-60 minutes to see if you like it.

I have corresponded with him a little. I was interested in his 310 until I saw the sale price was $335,000. That is a little out of my price range! Probably one of the nicest older 310's on the market. The junky ones are $70,000, so I was hoping his was $150,000. I was WAY off!

This is great! I just bought a 1968 150 a few weeks ago and that fouled lower plug issue at mag check is real business!!
I had to taxi with the engine leaned out. We still ended up burning the carbon off the plugs pretty frequently.

I had that same ground speed for 200 miles in my tripacer the other day......brutal!!

I complained about being at 50 knots a lot, but the view was pretty cool (and MUCH better than sitting in traffic).

i just bought a 150. useful load is 473. That's not much. How did you guys manage your fuel with 2 adults on-board?
With 22.5 gallons of usable fuel at 6 pounds per gallon, you can bring two 170 pounders. With half tanks, two 200 pounders.
Hate seeing loose items on the glareshield.
You made the right call to trade up for a 182
It is a LOT more useful, but burns almost 3 times the gas.

I just looked up the N number. This plane is no longer flying according to faa.gov. I wonder what happened?
It has flown 3 times this month according to FlightAware.
