- CARTOON EVOLUTION'S EXPLAINING DISNEY #26 - LUDWIG VON DRAKE
Debuting in 1961 as a one-off television character, Walt Disney’s Ludwig Von Drake - the first Disney character created for television - became a runaway success, soon becoming a regularly recurring character on Walt’s Anthology Series, and appearing in a swarm of extended media and merchandise. Over the years, Ludwig has seen a healthy handful of appearances in Disney media and remains a beloved member of the extended Disney character lexicon. To celebrate more than 60 years of the Kooky Professor, I’ll trace his entire Evolution from 1961 to now, covering his history and inception and covering his many appearances and changes over the years.
Here's my look at Ludwig Von Drake (also known as Pico de Paperis) through the years.

The bit from the Ducktales reboot where he says he got so busy he just forgot to die is one of my all time favorite jokes.
Wait what episode was that
@@EdalgmWasTaken final episode
He's a character I always forget exists, but I'm happy whenever he appears
Same here
I love him for his appearances in the Disney sing-along songs collection 😊
Same that was my introduction and familiarity of the character along with Professor Owl who was the primary host of the Disney Sing-Along Songs.
Me too
So did I. He was a great host in many of the Disney singalong videos.
Same!! I loved the promo that ended on my Christmas Sing-Along tapes at the end back in my childhood!! The 1993-1994 promos are so nostalgic!!
In Kingdom Hearts 3, Ludwig Von Drake is the producer behind the Disney cartoons shown at Twilight Town as a neat homage to his early days during the Walt Disney era.
While he doesn't make any physical appearances (yet), it's nice to know he does exist in the series.
The big return of Mickey and Friends evolution videos
I'm glad to see Mickey and Friends evolutions return, and with one of my favorites. His eccentric kookiness is just so much fun to watch, I especially love him in the sing-along songs collections and in the recent Mickey Mouse shorts.
Ludwig von drake is my favorite disney character and his inventions are great!
Paul Frees was iconic as Ludwig Von Drake Corey Burton has done an great job picking up where Paul left off.
Ludwig Von Drake feels like an UNDERRATED Mickey Mouse character.
I wish there was a Mr. Magoo evolution, that would be cool
I like to see a evoution of mr. Magoo!
Ronald McDonald evolution would be awesome.
This video is certainly a surprise. I always thought, for a character that was utilized so often in the 80's and 90's, Ludwig was somehow underrated. I didn't know he had any merchandise back when he first appeared, as I haven't seen much with him on it until a Disney Store produced plush toy during the Clubhouse era. I like the idea of him having a hosting role for Sing-a-Longs and specials, but I'm glad they used him in more of an ensemble. I've always loved Disney's Ducks, and he's one of my favorites. Great to see him featured in a video.
Didn’t think you would do Ludwig Von Drake considering you were pretty much done covering most of the Mickey and Friends characters for your Explaining Disney Evolution videos.
Got to love Ludwig Von Drake for his intellectual zany persona and acts as the eccentric professor and Uncle you want to hang out with. My introduction and familiarity with Ludwig Von Drake was him being another host for the _Disney Sing-Along Songs_ VHS tapes along with the Mickey Mouse Works shorts and _House of Mouse_ where in one of the episodes, he recognizes the names of most of the Disney characters that are present in the club except himself. Not to mention also making appearances in _Mickey Mouse Clubhouse_ and the Ducktales cartoon (both the 1987 and the 2017 iteration).
Thanks for the video Dave.
I love von drake in the house of mouse.
And I thought that we have exhausted all the Disney cartoon characters and it turns out that I completely forgot about Ludwig Von Drake.
Gosh I love Ludwig!
He's my favorite character to Donald Duck
So do I, & I didn’t know that he’s from Austria.
Well duh
me too!
Are you guys crazy?
I’m so happy Ludwig Von Drake got a Cartoon Evolution, this intelligent yet humorous duck has been very forgotten over the years and you helped educate about him to the modern generation.
I actually had the version of Mickey and the Beanstalk with Ludwig Von Drake on VHS. That was my introduction to Ludwig (and Herman), so I have some sentimental nostalgia for the character.
Von Drake was always a fun character, and it still amazes me that he was the first one made for television. I guess it's not that surprising he appeared in various TV shows like "Bonkers," "House of Mouse," and both versions of "Ducktales."
4:16 just noticed how Arthur's eyes widened when he touches the sword. Probaly seen the film dozens of time.
I remember seeing Ludwig Von Drake in some episodes of Mickey Mouse Clubhouse.
The Ludwig hosted version of Mickey and the Beanstalk was also released on volume 6 of the DVD series Disney Fables in 2004, which also had The Reluctant Dragon segment from said titled feature.
5:21 I used to love Donald Duck in Mathmagic Land when I was a kid! I haven't thought of that in years.
Finally you did Von Drake, now we wait for Mortimer Mouse Evolution in 2026.
My memories of him are mainly from the comics and Disney Sing-Along Songs tapes. Didn't know he had such rich history, but that's what your channel is for.
I was really hoping Toodles would get a mention.
Really hope there’s a Disney Junior video later down the line.
The reference to the colors in Ducktales reboot was awesome.
Fun fact: In Germany his name is Primus von Quack.
In Italy his name is Pico de Paperis
Good to have you back, Dave! ✌️
🙏
I've always loved Ludwig Von Drake! He's one of the funniest members of the Duck Family!
Paul Frees was perfect voicing the character, and Corey Burton does an excellent job today!
I loved his original Wonderful World of Disney appearances, my favorite being the Human Behavior one. The ending was hilarious. After showing the Humphrey Bear short "In The Bag," Ludwig is outside and tears up his notes only to find an angry Humphrey staring him down. A scared senseless Ludwig quickly starts picking up the torn-up papers while doing the same dance that was in the short.
Paul frees really made him
so lovable
And too, Ludwig von Drake mentioned in Mickey & Sora poster Kingdom Hearts III.
I’m so happy when you cover Mickey Mouse & friends related stuff! Want to see more about Mickey and friends
HELL YES!!!! One of my favorite Disney TV Hosts ever (2nd is Gemini)!!!! Absolutely love Ludwig! I actually enjoy his retelling Mickey and the Beanstalk also!!❤ Look forward to seeing the voice evolution too!!
He's one of my favorite characters. XD
I loved watching his first appearance on The Wonderful World of Color, and I loved watching him bring the house down at the end of A Symposium of Popular Music!
I haven’t seen the more recent ones, but I always loved his appearances in the old re-runs as a kid.
The first time I saw Ludig Von Drake was during the Disney Sing-a-Long song videos. Other hosts besides Ludwig included Professor Owl and his students (reused footage from the special "Toot, Whistle, Plunk and Boom") and Jiminy Cricket.
Excited to check this out, Dave! Exciting when you cover stuff related to Mickey and his pals!
I first saw him on the Disney singalong video I Love To Laugh, & the second time I saw him was when he was captain in Under The Sea, & he hosted You Can Fly & he appeared in Fun With Music & hosted Mickey & The Beanstalk.
Paul frees really gave a lot of personality von drake, especially his ad-libs
Some people also theorised that the Name Ludwig von and von Drake being austrian might also be a reference to the economist Ludwig von mises (whose ideas played a huge role in the 1950s)
I also watched A Symposium On Popular Songs on UA-cam during my college years, I watched it along with the This Is America Charlie Brown video The Music & Heroes Of America.
First off, Thank You for another one Dave!😊
Not sure if they did this in Australia, but the Disney Channel had a late night "Disney Vault" block that ran from around 9pm to 6am between 1997-2002. I've always been a night owl, so this is where I saw most of the classic Disney media as a kid. I would always get a little happier whenever Ludwig Von Drake would show up😁
He's been my "deep cut" favorite Disney character since 7 years old😅😅🐒🐒
Please cover more Disney characters like obscure character Clara Cluck, the Three Little Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf (from the Silly Symphony shorts), Dumbo, Peter Pan’s Tinker Bell, Max Goof, Jiminy Cricket, Professor Owl, and other characters!
The problem with most of these obscure characters is that they simply don’t have an important or interesting story to tell. Some of these were created simply because a story necessitated it - and there’s no story there. These videos have to be more than just rattling off appearances of a character in different media.
That said, I do plan on doing more Disney characters very soon 😊
Ludwig Von Drake was voiced by Paul Frees, who would also go on to voice villains such as the Green Goose (The Man Called Flintstone) and Burgermeister Meisterburger (Santa Claus is Comin' to Town).
Glad these are back
Finally, after ages! I've been hoping to see this since 2019.
I'd say my favorite were the Disney TV Specials where he would be the host. Always enjoyed his energetic personality and his funny quotes here an there.
I do like Ludwig Von Drake and he's one of my favourite Disney characters
The Big Comeback of Mickey and Friends Evolution ❤
Awesome video!
So cool
Ludwig von drake is wonderful and I like him in the sing-along songs and in mickey mouse clubhouse!
Thank You For The Video Now Do Ludwig Von Drake's Voice Evolution Please From Benny Mufabiro.
Would love to see the history of Dick Dastardly and Muttley. Need more Villain Cartoon Evolutions.
I would've said you got all Mickey Mouse characters, but that was before Mortimer Mouse got popular, thanks in part to his Mickey Mouse Clubhouse appearance recently getting turned into a meme.
You forgot the other Christmas special that was in 3D where they did the story of the Nutcracker and he was the Uncle to Minnie who gave her the nutcracker.
Ludwig being Donald's uncle by marriage makes the most sense, given his different last name and Austrian accent. I think Carl Barks had the right idea. My favorite appearances of his are the DuckTales reboot and his hosting gig for the old Sing-Along Songs videos.
I know him mostly from the european comics.
I didn't know he debuted on TV first.
I’ve heard of Von Braun, he designed the V2 rocket, & went on to become the head of NASA & designed the Saturn V rocket, which took Neil Armstrong & Buzz Aldrin to the moon.
I do hope Ludwig continues to make appearances,
Wow tha amazing!! Those for Cartoon Evolution!!!❤❤❤
My Goodness Scrooge and Von Drake look so Familiar
Funny Sunny😂
I remember seeing him on mickey mouse clubhouse, oh, the memories 😊
Another evolution, let's go
Can you do the evolution (and voice evolution) of Humphrey the Bear next please!
Sorry, I don't really see much of a story there to tell, so it's unlikely. Possibly one day - but certainly not next.
I Wonder who’ s the next Disney character this series is going to cover next since the only other prominent Mickey and Friends character I can see having an evolution is Clara Cluck, Max Goof, or Mortimer Mouse. But if he’s not next it wouldnt be a suprise if another disney franchise got an evolution since you already covered Pooh, Buzz lightyear, and the little mermaid. My bets are Timon & Pumbaa, Elsa, Maleficent, Cruella De Vil, Stitch, Jiminy Cricket, & Tinkerbell. If including Acquired Properties Iron Man, The X men, Hulk, Captain America, Darth Vader, Indiana Jones, and the Griffins from Family Guy
I've always liked to imagine Ludwig is married to Scrooge McDuck 's sister Matilda, that's why Donald always called him "Uncle Ludwig". Obviously Ducktales 2017 didn't go with this, but I still like to imagine it's true for the classic versions
I wrote this before finishing the video, I never knew Barks almost made it official! That made my day XD
He may have been designed as a one shot character but he fit really well in Donald Duck's family tree especially as Scrooge McDuck continued to be phased in as Ludwig Von Drake was as obsessed with knowledge as Uncle Scrooge was obsessed with treasure hunting and earning wealth which made it a natural fit to eventually have Donald's motivation be an obsession with protecting and supporting his family as of the latest incarnation of DuckTales
Do Garfield next please 🙏
I never knew whats this duck name was. ;) I catch glimpses of him, here and there. :)
The VHSs in the style of "The spirit of Mickey" contain no new animation, it's all recycled by digitally extracting the character and replacing the background, but they are all extracted from already existing material.
Yay there back
Paul frees got his start doing radio drama in the 1940s and 1950s
My favorite appearance of him was on an episode of HOM when Mickey tried to prove he wasn't as a know it all. Let's see the mouse try that on Bugs Bunny 😂
I never knew that Ludwig Von Drake was related to the duck family, i one knew that because when I went onto the Disney Wikipedia it said he was the Uncle to Donald Duck like Scrooge Mcduck is the uncle of Donald as well.
I am not currently sure which side of the family he belongs to, but I do know that Scrooge Mcduck is Hortense, which is Donald and Della’s mother is his Younger Sister to Scrooge Mcduck.
Sehr gut.
How ironic it is that Disney first started broadcasting at ABC to shift to NBC to decades later buying up ABC, becoming the owner of said channel.
On a funny side note, ABC broadcast Disney's rival Warner Bros. cartoon series The Bugs Bunny Show from 1960.
love the videos. Other cartoon evolution videos i would love to see are alvin and the chipmunks, tmnt, little lulu, garfield, top cat, the smurfs, family guy, hey arnold, goofy's son max, king of the hill, arthur, bearenstein bears and Clifford the big red dog. Around the Holliday you should do rudolph, frosty and Santa claus.
Thank you. I did one for TMNT a few months ago. Garfield is coming next month. Have plans to tackle a couple of the others you’ve listed in the near future too 😊
If you watch Disneyland 10th anniversary, you will see Von Drake with the rest of the characters
22:43 This is actually incorrect. Scrooge and Von Drake both appeared together on Mickey Mouse Works back in 1999 in the MouseTales segment A Midsummer Night’s Dream
11:00 "Ludwiq von Drake" XD
I'm kinda hoping you'll cover Gyro Gearloose 😊
The 2017 DuckTales feels like all the characters were given personality overhauls.
I could swear I saw an orange glowing Ludwig von Drake on top of an orange glowing EPCOT on the television once. Am I remembering correctly?
25:54
Nerved notice.
OK, so what do you think would happen if we put Ludwig, egon spengler, the doctor, Emmitt L Brown, and autobot preceptor all together into a laboratory and had full raign to do whatever they wanted.
You know, I'm surprised Professor von Drake hasn't made an appearance in Kingdom Hearts yep.
Used to think Von Drake and Uncle Scrooge were the same character for some reason
14:35 The AI up-res on Eisner's face is HORRIFYING.
AI up-res? What's that?
@@matteocaiti4878 Basically, the video editor has taken a grainy, low resolution TV image and utilized artificial intelligence to make it appear higher resolution. What happens is the program examines the image and tries to recreate it at a higher resolution. To see what that did to Michael Eisner's face, go to the timestamp in my original comment.
He's my favourite Duck family member
Anything he did with Ducktales or the Duck family.
This was unexpected
I love Ludwig Von Drake
I kept on thinking this was the scrooge
On the Official Disney Junior Facebook page a week or two ago confirmed Don Rosa's assertion the Ludwig was married to Scrooge's sister Matilda.
cooool
I remember him from the game Donald Duck: Goin' Quackers
LOVE Von Drake, and love this installment! Is this the final Disney evolution? I'm trying to think of any last names considered within Mickey's circle of characters.. The Three Little Pigs (and Big Bad Wolf)? Clara Cluck? Humphrey Bear? Roger Rabbit? I don't think there's any others outside of that...
Thank you! 😊 There may be a couple more!
I love it but if you watch house of mouse season 3 episode 8 scrooge and lugwig are screen together frist but in Shakespearean outfits thanks bringing up the sing-along parts that's how I learned about Lugwig
