Ex-Professional Cyclists Matt "Tattoo" Stephens and Simon Richardson take on one another in an "urban battle of the bikes!"
The guys are starting close to the Siegessäule aka The Berlin Victory Column, and the race is on to see who reaches the Schindelhauer Bikes office on the other side of town first.
But who will win? Simon on his Schindelhaur Wilhelm bike complete with a Pinion Gearboxed Gates carbon belt drive with a 12 internal gears with a 600% range! or Matt on his Schindelhauer Viktor fixed gear bike, providing he can clip into the old school toeclips?

Simon and Matt are also using Cycliq lights which operate with a similar functionality to a dashcam in a car, but for a bike! A combination of lighting and HD quality recording, pretty cool.

Do you commute? Let us know 👇
Global Cycling Network yes
Moved to Berlin a year ago, no better way to get around the city than by bike.
Global Cycling Network sure do...no better way to get across a city rain or shine 👍
Yes! To Ansbach, Bayern, DE and I love it
I commute to work and has definitely made me a stronger cyclist. I realize how important consistency is when I'm far more comfortable on longer weekend rides.
"They confiscated our phones"
"Further than that we can use the Sena app on our phones"
"We had our phones confiscated at breakfast"
*produces phone*
He smuggled dat one in da booty!
Keistered it.
"our phones were confiscated so we wouldn't cheat."
...minutes later...
"my strategy is to pull up Google maps on my phone and then listen to the turn by turn directions via Bluetooth."
Wait what?
Matt clearly enjoyed riding a fixed gear again, must have reminded him of his childhood...you know...before gears were invented
What is that bike?
Fixed gear is not the same as single speed. IIRC a fixed gear bike won't be able to coast and you must pedal if you want to move forward.
@@randomrandom316 fixies are also extremely dangerous if you lose your foot placement on the pedals while moving at high rate of speed. Make sure you have front and rear brakes when you ride.
@@ariv8585 thats why most fixie users I know use clipless pedals
@@imneveruploadinghere7180 same case for me. My fixie friends either use clipless or those kinds of pedals where It kinda wraps around your foot.
As a resident of Berlin, the continuum of the clips made no sense, back and forth on the map. Magically moved from Kreuzberg to Neukolln during a conversation :)
yeah, they did circles, went off the showed route and even rided in the wrong direction
rode.
Also, there is absolutely no way, Matt could have beaten Si with this route, if both were actually competing.
U just had to spoil it, right?)))
People are outraged at sponsored content, but when the sponsored stuff is actually cool, what's the problem? That being said even Top Gear managed to find cool cheap cars to feature in its shows, so it's a bit ludicrous that there are never any cheap bikes on GCN. TG had a £100 car challenge, and i'm sure all the subs here are dying to see a £10 bicycle challenge from London to Manchester.
my dad has been riding a $10 bicycle for years now
Long live the pub bike
Seems more legit than your commuting videos where you all wear Lycra and ride 3k€ race bikes to go to work. Awesome content btw.
Yeah, no 3k€ race bike, just Si's 5k€ commuter bike!
Andrew Steel Fair enough
Yup and Matt's riding a 1550€ fixie.
That being said, if you work in an office, you need to change into office clothes, so you might as well wear a bib and jersey : )
@@arsaeterna4285 Anyone who has the TINIEST shred of self respect left in them will NOT wear that. Only professional cyclists would wear those cloths. And people, who have really no self respect.
Also, I mean I don't know bout your commuting route, but I'll just take my time (being fast or slow is literally a time difference of just 5 Minutes for me) and arrive clean and unsweated in the office.
I suppose I sweat when I ride home, but when I go home I'm usually in the mood to cycle a little harder and have some fun - but I'll take a shower after work in any event, so that doesn't matter.
In any event: As long as I have even a tiny bit of dignity left: I won't dress in fucking lycra, lol. And neither will anyonne else with self respect.
Yes, I too greet all my best mates with "Nice to meet you"
Prashant Pradhan mate was thinking the same! So much bullshit. Going down the top gear road ain't it....unfortunately....
haha! yes, i caught that too! :)
If it's in the script, that's what you say. I'm sure they had already met by the time they started filming the shot.
That was somewhat tongue in cheek
I thought they took your phones at breakfast?
Calum Neill just spotted that hahaha
Guessing they had them taken so they couldn't pre plan a route, but if they get them back just before the challenge you don't have time to memorise a route? Just a thought
Calum Neill they did to stop them wanking all afternoon...again...
I'd imagine they took them away at breakfast so they couldn't map the route in between starting the race. Or something like that :)
Also, 'that was roland, one of my mates' - later 'nice to meet you' :)
Cool, cool, cool, yeah cool, cool cool cool... cool
Cool
cool, cool, cool, cheers, cool... :)
Vedant Bhat yeah no cool yeah
Cool. Cool cool cool. Cool cool cool.
Matt even had the °cool° to sit down, make a call, wait for his mate to show up, go the longer route and *STILL WIN THE CHALLENGE with only one gear!!!*
Finally, two bikes with flat bars instead of drop bars.
I've been watching all these video since this Pandemic. I've missed so much great content! You've made a fan out of me!
I have seen this video probably aver 25 times. Just too dam cool. Fun to see Simon and Mat together again.
This is one of the three most entertaining clips on this channel! XD
Great stuff! ... and gear!
4:03 Matt has problems clipping in no matter what type of pedals he uses ! Great vid guys, as always.
Old age and treachery will beat out youth and enthusiasm every time!
indeed! just look at the state of politics in america for example
@@jackbenson8228 Or just about anywhere else for that matter.
"I asked for the $6,500 bike."
For $6,500 that bike better make me breakfast as well.
😆🤣
Really enjoy these videos... keep 'em coming...
been riding/commuting fixed in berlin for 3 years now. always been tired about all those gearing videos. really loved this one! please do more fixed gear
GCN is the Top Gear equivalent for cyclists
The new or the old one?
NeoDerGrosse old obviously
I agree, except that they have a better presenters compared to that long face self centered Clarkson!
Ok, but there's one very important difference, GCN lacks a huge a**hole.
As in they only ever seem to test overly expensive products that their audience can't afford?
Ever since it introduction (few years back), "this is the first EVER independent review of Pinion Gear on road in English"!
Please GCN, do more about urban bikes e.g. fixies, SS, hub gears and that Pinion gearbox
“Just skills really. Can’t teach it.” This is becoming my motto! 🤪
Never have enough bikes!! Different bikes different occasions...whatever pedal power, they all beat the car any day!
Absolutely!
Yes totally agree. My converted old school MTB for the daily commute through trails, parks and back streets and my new Ebike for high elevation mountain roads and hill climbs.
A classic “mama chari” for shopping trips to the supermarket. Perfect...
Dang. Matt's such a fixie goon, he got into his toeclips faster than he does on a clipless pedal. He's even starting to get a tattoo sleeve, starting from the shoulders. Someone put this guy in the Red Hook Crit.
Thank you, I'm an avid viewer of your channel and love your videos. really great to see you don't have to don Lycra and ride a road bike to have a great time! Your presentation was similar to but outclassed the Channel 5 Gadget Show. Please can we see more alternative cycling (what about cargo bikes?) - Keep up the excellent work.
We need a video review on the Pinion gearbox! This seems to be quite an interesting alternative to a classic derailleur based system.
I was a crowd funder for the Cycliq Fly6 (back) Camera-light.
Then I bought the Fly12.
Then I joined the company as a director!!
It's a great product and it was great to see it on GCN.
Thanks boys!!
Would love to see a more in depth review of the bike Simon was riding ? Great video !
Often thought GCN was the 'Top Gear' of cycling. This has just proved it... Matt is the 'Clarkson' of cycling - wins the challenges, but will pull any cheat to do so!
Steve, Canvey Island
Matt rolls his t-shirt sleeves up 80s style. Should stick a pack of Marlboro in there for the full effect.
Thanks 🙏 from Seattle! I’ve been a fix purist for far too long. A month ago a friend who is also slipping in to the fourty something bracket convinced me to upgrade to a direct drive hub motor (in freewheel configuration 🙄) & I’m addicted to every little advantage. You guys have spoiled this old bean with ideas! Cheers!
I wish I could travel to all of these cycling destinations. This is such a beautiful place.
why don't you? apart from a debilitating illness life is too short to be dreaming. I wish I could take my own advice:)
Imagine if gcn did an hour long show, with maybe 2 of these sort of challenges, a pro bike check, a tech section and a pro interview.... maybe once a week at about 8pm on a Sunday 👍
Cool bikes! More content about "normal" cycling could be great. Just an idea. Never done any travel bike vids?
oh btw i love the fixie love! keep it up guys! skidding down a hill seeing if youll stop before the red light is surely scary
8:38 - "Completely sealed from the elephants". Finally, a bike that caters for my needs
Just waiting for the recumbent challenge!
kudos to the video production & editing team. good job!
Wish I knew you boys were in town! Some incredible riding in every direction outside of the city.
I loved this video! In my town on my favourite urban bike brand. Big cheers.
I would love to see more of this kind of stuff.
Is Urban Cycling Network (UCN) coming next?
That is a very neat idea.
Appreciate the fixed gear love! Started with Fixed and i now i'm riding road also!
Great video guys. Those Carbon belt geared systems must be the future for us all?!
ay! Schindelhauer is super nice. Totally satisfied Wilhelm (with the 18 gear pinion) owner here. Though I have to admit theat the prices are rather steep for somewhat limited bikes, if you consider i payed over 5000 Euro for mine. The Pinion is simply a dream, but since the gearbox itself is VERY expensive and the frame has to be specially done for hoasting a Pinion pushes the price up quite a bit, the alternative of a Rohloff speed hup (works with a gates drive just fine with some alterations) should be mentioned.
One problem with owning a Schindelhauer:
you will never really be in peace when your bike is locked somewhere for longer then 15 minutes, where you do not have a direct line of sight (no matter what kind of and how many locks you use)
Maybe test Velotraum on occasion for bikepackers, which is another small, but popular aand high quality german Bike-manufactory.
Since you praised the gates drive so much I want to throw in some cons here:
- much more expensive in every way (you get three new chains for one belt)
- If you have to change the belt it can be rather tricky since it has to be perfectly centered.
- If you get the wrong muck on the belt it is over with being the silent wind - these things start to squeack like hell then.
-
Is t worth t? I'd say yes, but everybody considering getting a gates drive should know what he might get himself into.
All of this tech is cool--the helmets, the lights/cameras/action, and the bikes. And turns out Matt is a sort of Sneaky Pete, who knew? But hey, when you're riding with one of your all-time best buds. But I am not believing Matt put his hand on a car at a light. Isn't one of the rules of commuting no touching? I know it is for me--I don't touch them and I don't want them touching me. Great video, guys, thanks for the tech demos, the tour of Berlin, and all the grins. And I'd choose Si's bike any day--clean lines, internal gearing, slammed handlebars.
Matt's face when he says "just skills really, can't teach it" 😂 So funny
Having nothing better to do, I put these two routes to the test today. As expected, Simon's route recommended by Google Maps is much faster. I started out with Matt's route as recommended by the fixie guy, but with a few logical modifications (I'm guessing the app they used to draw the route wouldn't recognise the exact route). Time: 36:24 (but I did take a wrong turn, and my chain came off once, so let's call it 34 minutes). Two beers, a gorgonzola pizza and half a world cup game later (congrats Belgium, that was a nice first goal against Panama), I took Simon's route back. Again with some minor modifications, I avoided the coble stones beside Görli and took a minor short cut Google Maps apparently doesn't know about. Time: 20:07.
I'm totally out of shape, trained cyclists like Simon and Matt could surely take a decent chunk off of both those times (in fact I'm annoyed I didn't make it under 20 minutes, I was so sure I would. I guess I shouldn't have had that pizza). Matt's route does have 3 or 4 less traffic lights, but that clearly doesn't make up for the fact that it's some 6 km longer. However, it definitely is the nicer ride, and zipping through the airfield is always a pleasure.
I hope you guys made a video showing the bikes they have in store at Schindelhauer Bikes
Do more videos with city bikes it's so great!
with Matt doing a few skids, is this the start of his transition to the dark side (aka gmbn)
one of your best ones yet!
nice vid !! love that fixie !
GCN meets Top Gear. Love it!
Great show more commuting videos, how about a Brompton Moulton challenge.
Come to the states and do a tour series here. Might enjoy that.
Much love for the 12 speed Bike!!! ;) That's simply irresistible!!! ;}
4:20 - BMC guy pedals desparately to overtake while Si just casually chats to camera...
OMFG!!! im a fixxy convert lol as of a month ago.. Tire blow out so a friend online lent me his fixxy(since i ride over drive but have a license js) I love it
No one commenting on Matt taking the longer route but still winning?
Release the GPS traces.
I'd love to see you guys bike packing!
Every time Matt says ‘fixie’ a little bit of my soul dies.
This plays like a top gear episode... especially at the end arriving at the final destination
Love this guys. Been thinking about a fixie for a long time... sounds like they really are as fun as they look.
In case anyone else was wondering about the light action cams.... The back light costs £119, and the front £275! :O
Miss Matt! I've ridden two years with gates belt and would prefer to have it on all bikes. It's that good.
This conversation was so cool.
More of this!!
Well done... very well done gents.
"Skills really, ya can't teach it," as he chugged his beer.
Super cool!!
Love this video :D
Bravo from an Italian urban cyclist riding in Mexico City.
Commute once a week for my office day, only 7 miles but through lovely North Devon. 👍🏻
Cool to see some fixed gears on this channel.
Haha love it great video lads
Would love to see you both do exactly this in Japan where I commute. Google telling you how to get to a location across the city in say, Yokohama, or Tokyo or Nagoya would be a hilarious, entertaining adventure. You’d have to bring compasses and paper maps and translation apps for your phone.
Almost zero dedicated cycling lanes, nearly no one speaks English for directions, and google will only get you lost in the labyrinth of the cities.
Since you can handle London and Berlin, Tokyo is definitely your next level challenge.
Please come
Pinion gears, Belt drive and more. GCN needs some urban tech reviews.
Tempelhof airstrip is really good for intervals on closed road in the middle of Berlin, always ride there when im there :D
Simon riding around Berlin: "Hacks and bodges! hacks and bodges, hacks and bodges,..."
As a Berliner I'd say Matt must have had a Wunderfixie to win this challenge :-) GCN - the top gear of cycling. Love those Schindelhauer bikes, especially the Wilhelm, bloody expensive though and a bit heavy for my taste.
11:19 grotty lift with no inner doors 😁😁😁 awesome!
More urban cycling segments, please
Great vid and seriously cool tech. But I'm pretty sure my fly6 stores a lot more than 2 hours of video. Just put in a larger memory card.
And Simon would have won (and had a prettier route), had he used Komoot instead of Google maps for the turn-by-turn bike navigation.
I absolutely love Matt's fixie, does anyone know how I can get the same configuration here in Australia?
Love the gearbox
Great video 👍
Oh man, had I only known you were just around my house. Would have been great to meet you.
But it's also fun to watch your "challenge" when you know the place. And I know my city very well guys. ;)
NeoDerGrosse In welchem bezirk lebst du?
@@HarmoYT Gar nicht mehr in Berlin, damals Charlottenburg.
Wow those are great bikes! Schindelhauer bikes looks clean, 5000€ on Pinion gears,TheCleg brakes...But anyway gorgeous bikes!Great video.
You guys should give the Brilliant priority bike called the L train a try. Gates belt drive with 7 speed nexus rear hub.
Got a bit distracted at the end there. The office was full of IKEA desk chairs... and I've literally got the exact same one :D
Good very nice I am coming to hear
If this were an episode of Running Man, Matt would be in the 'Cheat to win' Team! 😂😂😂
Who else is waiting for the 'Matt Stephens shows you how to ride a unicycle' video
4:20 familiar sight, guy fully BMC kitted out, but not actually on a BMC :)
It's the dirt shed show!!!
Ha ha; You guys are rotten to the core. That was cold, but funny. Good video fellas! Peace!
Gee, Matt took a massive detour. But what a scenic ride! Simon on the other hand … Oranienstraße into Görlitzer … what a nightmare ride. How many BMWs cut you off?
The Sena helmet has been amazing! The bike camera is hard to find.
