Thanks for this info! I am looking to upgrade my audio from a Rode Lavalier GO Lapel Mic. I create talking-head UA-cam videos in a fairly well-treated room and plan to upgrade to a boom mic above my head. I would like to find the best mic that I can plug straight into camera (Fuji XT3), so I don’t have to sync audio in post. I’m considering the Rode VideoMic NTG , NTG2, NGT4+, and Sennheiser MKE 600. Which of these mics do you think would be better for my application? I have heard the MKE 600 and others may have better audio quality (but I would be powering them via 3.5mm, not XLR), but I wonder if the difference would justify getting that over the Rode- which has a power system that I can more easily charge, is cheaper, and seems to sound great. The Rode also has a gain knob on the mic so I could avoid using the camera’s gain. My UA-cam channel is called Hope Through Prophecy in case you would like to see my current setup. Thanks for any help!
I've been using one of these mics for a few months now (well the NTG4), but never bothered working out what each button does. Thanks for this. Very helpful.
I've used several of the Rode line mics and got one of these ntg4+ models about 6 months back. I LOVE it and agree with all of your points. For the quality sound level it delivers I happen to think this mic is a no-brainer bargain.
A mic review with music in the background is not a review. It's a demonstration of how the mic looks like and that's about it. We can't judge the quality of the microphone with music in the background and not raw audio.
Wow, it's really great to see a professionally done review for a microphone like this. I wanted to ask if this is suitable for a room with a lot of room reverb, I have a cubical room which has a lot of echo, and the lake outside has very annoying birds and other animals. So would this be okay for an application like that? Also, even though you said that this was great with low frequencies, it didn't 'feel' to have that with your voice. That cucumber shot was really great though. 👍 Thanks.
No mic is particularly good in a room with significant reverb. You’d get much further treating the room with foam or hanging blankets than trying to reduce the mic pickup.
TechReflex @cult of mac. Thanks for the replies. Eventually I found a video which showed the effects of the ntg series in a untreated room... and it was not pleasant. So yes, i just need to suck it up and start treating my room I guess :)
Very good video! I own an H6 as well, and I am getting my NTG4+ on Tuesday hopefully! Can you help me out with the best settings to geed crisp sound out of the NTG4+? What settings have you set in the H6? Thank you so much in advance! Cheers, Ben from Germany!
Off topic: You're using a nice cine lens, but using a stills photography tripod.. The tripod is fine if you don't need to smoothly pan/tilt while filming, as opposed to a fluid head. The advantage of a cine lens over a stills lens is more control over fine manual focus, and deep grooves for follow focus rings. I'm sure you strictly use autofocus for youtube videos.. Do you see where I'm going with this? Don't over pay for things you don't need. BTW, your review is fine.
You're using it wrong. It's supposed to be above your head facing down at a 45 degree angle aimed at your upper chest and about 1.5 ft away. This video is just capturing all of the background noise behind your head now. Also, having music behind your talking eliminates the whole point of a microphone review. You can't even tell how clean the audio is. Just my thoughts buddy.
He's using it fine. You can boom up high or low. As long as you can be as close to the mic as possible to reduce the amount of gain needed from the PA's, you can position it high/low. I do agree with you however, the music kills the actual test itself for us.
How close do you have the NTG4 for the examples at 04.25. Because if i use my Rode NTG4 together with my TASCAM DR70D i hear about the same noise as your example with the TASCAM.. if i set everything lower you cant hear the sounds very good. Im very curious at what audio level you recorded that. Around -12db? I have a lot of noise then.
I used this mic to record bread & pastry slicing sounds. The sound captured was awesome and I edited the video on Mac / FCP... All was well until I tried loading vid to Instagram. Sound got completely scrambled & distorted. I formatted my file on FCP as usual: 1080x1080/ 30fps / stereo sound 48KHz . This setting works fine with my other RØDE VideomicGo combined with the same camera. I tried increasing the KHz but to no avail. Any ideas?
Going straight to camera is definitely going to come out quieter, meaning you’ll have to crank the gain, adding noise. It’s really a mic designed to be recorded through an audio interface, not direct to camera.
@@cultofmac thanks for the response. Do you have any suggestion which mic should I go which doesn't need to have audio recorder and i can plug directly to my camera. my budget is around 200-300$.
Depends on the use case. I’ve been using the iRig Mic Video for the last few months and it sounds pretty good straight into camera. The RØDE Video Mic Pro is also great for direct camera connection.
You might be thinking I'm crazy but the NTG2 Sounds way better than NTG4+ actually I'm on search for a microphone and the gentleman from B&H Shows me the difference between The NTG2 and NTG4+ crazy right? The NTG2 Sounds more Natural try and you'll see
Why would that be crazy? :) It turns out that Rode have been pretty crazy with their naming of these mics. So for example, the ntg4 isn’t better than the ntg3, in fact it’s the other way around....
I dont understand why this guy has Zoom h6 and NTG4+ for producing indoor youtube videos ! Zoom H6 is alone a great mic system too and can output a clear perfect sound !
Pro tip: That $337 NTG4+ on Amazon will not be warrantied. “If you purchase any RØDE microphone from an unauthorized dealer via Fulfilled By Amazon you will not receive any US warranty or technical support.” Only pick Sold and Shipped by Amazon or go to your LOCAL dealer. :)

2 years later, do you still recommend this? any new better options?
The high-frequency boost is to boost when used on a blimp, and I agree with Jesse True, good video instead of those small things.
Thank you so much!!!! It was so helpful@!!!I Just got the NTG4+ mic.
Thanks again

Un saludo amigo puedo conectar este microfono a mi Pc?
Greetings friend, can I connect this microphone to my PC?
Was looking for someone to explain what the different buttons did. Great video, thanks!
thanks for describing this stuff, I'm really curious about that
so whats wrong with my connection? I barely can hear thru this :/ Its a first time I try to connect this
Zoom h6 recorder and ntg4+ are the ones I also use and wouldn’t change it for anything
How often can you charge the Lithium battery? What's happen after? Can you replace the battery if it is the end of the live?
There is an accessory available for your gh5. The XLR accessory mounts on to the camera's shoe mount.
This video deserve more viewers, very informative.
I think you accidentally got the mic in the shot.
lol, yeah i think he knew that!
cable is not included right??

One of the best video for a novice like myself.
Please tell me can I use NTG4 PLUS smartphone directly and get good quality.
Great video! Would you recommend the NTG 4+ over the NT1 for only voice overs?
good video though feel u can explain more about each button.
So satisfying

TechReflex did you ever get the answer to this question?? I have the very same issue...
@@steves1015 Yeah it totally sucks for that purpose, long shotgun mics are not suitable for indoor use. I am now using a lav mic, it works perfectly.

I am getting mine tomorrow!!! Would appreciate the same! Thanks
Which is the best recorder (which is cheaper than Zoom H6)
Great review man! Just ordering one for myself :)
what about the sennheiser MKE 600 in comparison?

4:05 when you try so hard but you don't succeed xD
Not bad considering I was looking through the camera :p I refilmed it to but preferred the sound on this one haha
Keep it up & have fun with all the toys!!!,
Nice piece and good explanations !!,

When podcasting, do I need to use all 3 buttons?
What lens are you using with your GH5?
what's the difference between connecting Ntg4+ to Zoom and Mic adapter like Beachtek DXA-MICRO PRO Audio Adapter?

Great Job!
Thanks!
I need some urgent help, I plugged this into my 5d mk4. and there is a nasty hiss noise.. can someone please help...
Possibly phantom power, low battery in the mic, the gain in the 5D, or a bad cable that’s buzzing.
Very nice video!
Have you tried the aputure deity?
have this mic its awesome

Did you rent the Cine lens?
sold
Xlr to klinke ? Adapter than you dont have to sync the audio
hello. how do you amplify sound for this microphone?
For indoors, I use a Behringer MIC100 with my Rode NT1A studio microphone and it's fantastic. It's so sensitive that it can hear me breathing.
@@georgecraft007 ok George Craft
What is phantom power
Does it charge only through Usb? does the phantom power charge it passively while in use?
no it doesn't

Really good point. 10 year warranty is totally worth it!
ANNOYING crappy millenial lightpop music with the stereotypical childish high-pitched chipmunk vocals. had to switch off.
🎧
agreed. couldn't focus on anything he's saying. hate that high pitched chipmunk fucker in every video
