Hi, I am one of the members of 4PM, Martiz Ware, and our group wanted to present a fresh new rendition to honor Sakamoto Kyu. I think we are better than so so ;-)
This song has ALWAYS given me chills and made me teary. Very rarely does today's music do that for me. Old school music definitely has something special to which we can all relate.
Visiting Japan for the first time, came across a park with school band singing the original Japanese song. Reminded me of this version from the 90s and tears starting welling up in my eyes. Don't know why I got so emotional...the power of music. September 2018.
The first English song that I memorised when I was 10. I come from a village from asia, where English isn't our forst language, through this song I learn to memorised, and understand the lyrics. Thank you. 😘
This will always take me back to January 1998, when I was stationed in Northern Japan. We had gone to a hot springs with friends. There was snow all around, and on the opposite side of the pool/bath, 3 Japanese men, drunk on sake, were singing it. I immediately recognized the song b/c of this version. Thanks for the memories! ♡
My mom randomly shared on Facebook last night the original Sukyaki from 1963 which was in Japanese. I played it and the melody hit me all of a sudden and these English words jumped out at me. So I looked up the lyrics to find the title of the song I was remembering and lo and behold, same title! I guess these guys just tried to do an English version of the original Japanese song. I never knew that, only took me what 30 years or so to find out lol
All of them were and still are great guys! I personally know them and am proud of them, though success was short, but that's how throat-cut and thirsty the industry is and remains. At least they can say they tried, succeeded, and for a short time, put Havre de Grace and Maryland on the map. Something for young one to strive for and emulate in the future endeavors. Nothing like the days we used to break dance against each other and now proud parents of great kids. Rock out!
I'm not much at buying albums but I still have theirs, great harmony. Too bad they didn't get more attention, btw, was stationed at Bainbridge so I can find Havre de Grace on a map :)
ANTHONY L. COLE, SR. Well, where are they now? How do we access them? Especially some ofbus who are in east Africa and been listening to them since sweet 1995!!
ANTHONY L. COLE, SR. Outstanding that they made it. And you're right, no one would know Havre De Grace, unless you were from Bethesda. God bless them and the sweet music they made and still make. Semper Fidelis, Captain T, U.S.M.C.
It's all because of you, I'm feeling sad and blue You went away, now my life is just a rainy day And I love you so, how much you'll never know You've gone away and left me lonely Untouchable memories, seem to keep haunting me Another love so true That once turned all my gray skies blue But you disappeared Now my eyes are filled with tears And I'm wishing you were here with me Soft with love are my thoughts of you Now that you're gone, I just don't know what to do If only you were here You'd wash away my tears The sun would shine once again You'd be mine all mine But in reality, you and I will never be 'Cause you took your love away from me Girl, I don't know what I did To make you leave me but what I do know Is that since you've been gone There's such an emptiness inside I'm wishing you'd come back to me If only you were here You'd wash away my tears The sun would shine once again You'd be mine all mine But in reality, you and I will never be 'Cause you took your love away from me Oh, baby, you took your love away from me
WOW!! I was compiling the best Ballads of All-Time and I came across "Suriyaki"... I knew I knew it from somewhere...listenend to the original...NOPE!...Eventually led to this 1995 ...4 p.m. verison...
My favorite memory of my teen years is with this song. My best friend Dayna,BF's since we were 5 years old, and I would sit outside on the porch swing pretty much every night singing this song at the top of our lungs over and over again with no music at all because we knew it by heart. It became like our song and something that was just between me and her. I am 32 years old now so we have been best friends for 27 years now and she moved away and I miss her so much it hurts she is my sister and always will be even though I have only seen her 4 or 5 times since she moved away in 2009 when we do get together or talk on the phone it is like no time has passed at all. We pick up right where we left off. Now that is what having a best friend means. Able to go a long time without seeing or talking to each other but then when we do get to hang out even if it has been 10 years or something we can still pick up where we left off like we were kids or teens again and were always together. We were very seldom apart back then. She was, is, and always will be my sister.
That was sweet of you to comment Jeremy. In the early days UTube used to be a lot of fun, almost like a community (in a sense). I still keep in contact w/people I "met" in '06. But UTube, the internet, and the world in general have all become much angrier places. I really don't understand the hate myself, but I honestly feel sorry for kids growing up in this atmosphere. My husband and I had planned to do a lot of travelling once he retired, but with the way things are now, I don't care if I never leave Canada again. Hell, I don't care if we never get out of Toronto again. Cheers!
Shawna, I'm going to be 60 in May and I still have a few friends from elementary and high school like that. It's comforting to know that that kind of love and support is never more than a call away. Cheers from Keiko in T.O.
I haven't heard this since I was like 13. I used to LOVE 4PM; underrated group imo. I honestly forgot all about them until I had a dream and this song was in it. Loving the trip down memory road 😊
This was the classic karaoke song. Often trying to find in the song selection at karaoke bars where the song is backed up by a video clip of a young European couple looking at each other lovingly while strolling around a fountain wearing daggy 90s clothing
The original Japanese title "Ue o muite aruko" roughly translates "I Walk Looking Up (So the tears won't fall)" This English version was written by Janice Marie Johnson, lead singer and bass player for A Taste of Honey, famous for this song and Boogie Oogie Oogie. Unfortunately for her, she had to surrender all writing credit for this English version to the original Japanese writers in order to get it recorded and published.
A Taste of Honey also does a lovely version. They hat a few disco hits, won some Grammys, and were then were kidnapped by aliens. Or so I believe, cause they disappeared without a trace.
I bought their CD when it first came out, this is the first time i've seen this music video. 90's R&B was the golden age in song but visually, they still catching up.
U did such a great job with this song & did it better than even A Taste Of Honey. U made so many young people, including me, love this song. I think 4PM's version is the best. Its interesting u say u did this in anniversary of Sakamoto's death, because the acapella first verse has an incredibly haunting quality, like if u were singing at a funeral 2 someone who's loved one has died. Thank u 4 keeping this song alive with our generation. U, more than anyone, gave this song the respect it deserves
Beautiful song, I listened to this song since I was a teenage still listening to it till today. I am going to turn 50 next year. Thanks you so much Kyu Sakamoto and English version 4PM 😀🤗🙏
God bless you! I have been trying to remember this song for 25 years!!! Lol I remember playing this song on a Walkman jumping on the couches (moms wasn’t home obviously) and just rewinding the tape and replaying it over and over. I was 6 years old wth did I know about love?! Lol But I sure did love this song, just never knew who sang it. I’ve been trying to remember all this time, all I knew was it was a male version. 😆
Its sad that the past 2 maybe 3 generations just dont get it. I maybe only 33 but I'm old school and old fashioned to my core. I grew up in the 90's and will always love the music and the days of that era. This was and always will be real music. Damn!!!!!!!!
To AiJimmy and others: God bless you. "Sukiyaki" by Kyu Sakamoto is the original and DEFINITIVE version. The melody may be the same, but the lyrics to Sakamoto's version are COMPLETELY different: haunting, morose, melancholy...yet, endearing. RIP Kyu Sakamoto.
These are old friends Larry and rey from over 20 years ago ... choke ... I used to have singing contests with them in the parking lot of a nightclub we went to, LOL! Seriously the guys have skills and are really decent, humble good human beings ;-)
I'm glad no movie or current pop star has made this song their own (which I realise is ironic, as these guys are covering a Japanese song). Let this always belong to those alive to have heard it back in the day and those they introduce it to.
Man in the High Castle brought me here. The original Japanese version came on and it instantly brought me memories back to this version by 4pm being that I grew up in the best decade ever, the 90s! I was 11 when this song came outl. Evey Asian sang this for karaoke. 😂
I've loved this song since I was in 7th grade, when it was in Japanese. This is a great find. I love your version too. (By the way, that was about 60 years ago.)
Hi, I am one of the members of 4PM, Martiz Ware, and our group wanted to present a fresh new rendition to honor Sakamoto Kyu. I think we are better than so so ;-)
This song was so dope 🔥
I heard this when I was 9 I’m 35 now and today I had this on repeat what a beautiful song
Ok!!! Love it!!
As a teenager in the 90s, I just wanted to say I loved your version of this song. Big ups for the respect to Sakamoto-san!
Hi!
This song has ALWAYS given me chills and made me teary. Very rarely does today's music do that for me. Old school music definitely has something special to which we can all relate.
true true
Basia Woloch love them so, stop gives me the child to this date.
We are of one mind on this 😢💜💜
Ya my schlong was even crying
Visiting Japan for the first time, came across a park with school band singing the original Japanese song. Reminded me of this version from the 90s and tears starting welling up in my eyes. Don't know why I got so emotional...the power of music. September 2018.
What a bittersweet love song. Loving this version. 4PM did a wonderful job.
Ahhh nothin' like kickin' back an jammin' to old school Classic jams like this :)
Amen brother !

They were just buzzed.
I remember this on the radio when it came out in the mid-'90s. Makes me miss the 90s even more.
My mom randomly shared on Facebook last night the original Sukyaki from 1963 which was in Japanese. I played it and the melody hit me all of a sudden and these English words jumped out at me. They did such a great job on this classic!!!!
Beautiful rendition of the first non-English song to ever make it onto the charts in the USA, back in the early 60s. Nice job, guys!
All of them were and still are great guys! I personally know them and am proud of them, though success was short, but that's how throat-cut and thirsty the industry is and remains. I had no idea they were from MD. DMV stand up!

2024. I remember this from when I was 9 years old. I'm 39. Thanks for the memory. Peace from the Bronx!
It's all because of you, I'm feeling sad and blue
You went away, now my life is just a rainy day
And I love you so, how much you'll never know
You've gone away and left me lonely
Untouchable memories, seem to keep haunting me
Another love so true
That once turned all my gray skies blue
But you disappeared
Now my eyes are filled with tears
And I'm wishing you were here with me
Soft with love are my thoughts of you
Now that you're gone, I just don't know what to do
If only you were here
You'd wash away my tears
The sun would shine once again
You'd be mine all mine
But in reality, you and I will never be
'Cause you took your love away from me
Girl, I don't know what I did
To make you leave me but what I do know
Is that since you've been gone
There's such an emptiness inside
I'm wishing you'd come back to me
If only you were here
You'd wash away my tears
The sun would shine once again
You'd be mine all mine
But in reality, you and I will never be
'Cause you took your love away from me
Oh, baby, you took your love away from me
I have been looking for this song for years and I finally remembered the name of the group! yay for youtube!
High School times baby!!
I AM SO HAPPY BE PART OF THIS VIEDO LONG TIME AGO !! WHAT A WONDERFUL VIEDO AND SONG ! MAY GOD BLESSING THEM ALL !!!
You Seem Like You Should've Gotten More Into Acting.
You were so mean to your daughter, haha.
"Sukiyaki" is one of the all time great songs. The proof is in the pudding. 3 versions of this song have gone top 10 in the U.S. This is the 3rd.
So so Blessed for cherished memories.. this song being one of them 🙏🏽💖 90's Love..
WOW!! I was compiling the best Ballads of All-Time and I came across "Suriyaki"... I knew I knew it from somewhere...listenend to the original...NOPE!...Eventually led to this 1995 ...4 p.m. verison...

@bellazara20 This song was originally done in the 60s by the Japanese singer Skamoto. It was the first non-English song ever to make the top ten.
Great Song
I've loved this song since I was in 7th grade, when it was in Japanese. This is a great find. I love your version too. (By the way, that was about 60 years ago.)
