- Here are 7 Things in Singapore that Shocked Me! I visited Singapore for the first time and was blown away. It is such a green, modern, diverse, clean, and magical country and city that gave me many first impressions. So watch along as I discuss these things that I almost couldn't believe!

Your last shocker shocks me too! im a Singaporean and I dont pick my nose in a public place! My family and friends have never done that before too. Are you sure the person your wife seen picking his or her nose is a Singaporean?
I’m not positive, but we saw them doing it in the Tekka Hawker Center in Little India mostly - it’s possible they were tourists, because I suppose it’s impossible to know if someone is Singaporean unless I ask or get their ID 😅
@@WanderlustWellmanI see. If it was indian she saw, very likely they are indian nationals working here. Once in blue moon I also saw people digging noses publicly. Tend to be elderly, probably they are at an age where they dont care about decorum anymore. At some point, Chinese Nationals like to openly massage their feet in MRT station and bus stops. But I have not seen it for a long while, they probably have assimilated into the culture. Once in a while I am annoyed with people cutting their nails in buses and bus stops too. I believe tend to be foreigners and seniors.
😅 it’s kind of difficult to say for certain that the people you saw picking their noses were Singaporeans…we do have many (and I mean hundreds of thousands!) overseas nationals (who look like us 🤣) who live and work here.

There are many foreigners and tourists in Sg. The people that you encountered may or may not be Singaporeans, especially those at tourist attractions.

I went to many countries, even the states, people picked their noses too. Bruh, it’s like everywhere.
Those who openly pick noses are a minority. The rest who feel the need to pick, normally have the social etiquette to do it privately.

Regarding number 7 about nose picking, note that nose picking is not done by most of us except the very old folks and foreigners from certain countries. You may wish to know that 40% of people living here are foreigners. Great video anyway!😊

True,my neighbours are from Philippines, China and India.I dnt mean to be racist but I notice many Indians lfr India jus love to throw their trash.

You haven’t mentioned the safety in walking around, day or night. It’s ok for women to go out alone even very late at night, whether on foot or on public transport.

Really enjoyed this, especially because all your first impressions were the same as ours (hubby & me), starting with the heat & humidity and all the greenery everywhere, especially along the highways. Our first visit was in 2006 on our way to Sri Lanka because we flew Singapore Airlines from Newark Airport & they had a 3-day stopover package deal. We had no idea what to expect. The deal included a visit to the Botanical Gardens, Jurong Bird Park, and other places I don't remember. We fell in love with it and changed our reservation to stop over another 3 days on the way home from Sri Lanka! Since then we've been back another 3 times. BTW, never saw anyone pick their nose! Also highly recommend the fantastic exhibit of Singapore's history at the National Museum of Singapore, also a beautiful building. And yes, it doesn't have to be expensive if you stick to the food courts and hawker centers. A fun restaurant in Little India is the Banana Leaf. I think I recognized La Pau Sat Hawker Center in your video. Now I really want to go back!! Thanks!

HI there. Singaporean here. Erm, the thing about nose-picking. It's not a Singaporean trait. More like the older generation or naturalized citizens will do the act in public but it's not a general thing. It was a shame that you spotted someone doing it. Anyways, thanks for the review! You are over exeggerating about nose-picking, Wellman. We Singaporeans don't really nose-pick in public as it is very gross and impolite but I do admit we do it at home sometimes. What you guys saw could be foreign workers working in Singapore.
Not trying to over exaggerate, just speaking on what we saw - I now understand that it’s widely viewed to be socially unacceptable in Singapore, but for some reason I saw several people do it over a few days which might be a coincidence, or maybe they weren’t actual Singaporean citizens. Hard to say though 😅

Good point on the hawker centre. You went Lau Pa Sat which is the higher range hawker cos of the location. Yes, we can choose to spend a lot or very little. And no the Picking nose is not a Singaporean thingy lah. I'm shocked to hear this.

Please understand that we have many residents here who are not Singaporeans by birth. Many come from neighbouring 3rd world countries where habits such as the ones you mentioned are acceptable.
Over 40% of the population are not locals

Most true-bred Singaporeans do not wear long-sleeved tops and hoodies. What you saw are mainly immigrants from temperate countries. Like what most people who commented, it’s definitely not Singaporeans habit of nose-picking. Most likely are immigrants.

Having been to NYC as a Singaporean in March, the cold was no joke either. It's like walking into a freezer. I guess we're even on that aspect.

Im not a Singaporean but have been living here for years. No 7 shock me lol.. coz I dont see ppl here picking nose in public, where did you see it ? I actually saw ppl picking nose when I was in Vegas couple of months ago, I remember it coz it was in my vacation video which I have to edit it out as it look gross lol..

We have 2+ million foreigners in Singapore not included 450 000 malaysians who commute daily from Johore.
locals normally hide in the shopping centres and air-con places in the noon, come out when the sun sets.
Makes sense, we tried to do a bit of that as well!
Even as a Singaporean, i find the weather extremely hard to accept. lol. sometimes my colleagues and I see tourist walking about in the sun (during our lunch hour) and man, we were saying, go inside and get aircon! but of course we understand why. the nose picking is pretty funny, i would be so mortified to do it in public and get seen by someone. i could say the same for any other work people in the business world. we would probably be shock to see it, but still there's always the older folks who may not have any qualms doing that or other foreigners, really don't know. still, thank you for the high praise you had given. the greenery is really nice considering that we really don't have those big jungles or mountains in Singapore. Glad you love it here. :)

Even as a local, we do feel the heat & humidity. I’ve started drinking cold water with Celtic Salt to replenish electrolytes…I don’t tire out that easily nowadays. If you are in Asia, you may want to do that…

My race, we are not “Middle East”…we are Malays but our religion is Islam.
The culture of Malays are totally different from Middle East…although there are Arabs in Singapore. Just as there are Indian Muslims in Singapore.

To be fair, you wont know the difference between Sporeans and foreign residents who made up almost half of our population. This is why you find all sorts of characters and behaviours in this tiny island nation.

Thanks for your input! I didn't go up to the people and ask if they were Singaporean, it's possible that they were tourists. Not trying to boost channel performance by saying things that were untrue, that was honestly just our own experience

Every country is experiencing hotter weather nowadays. Temperature in Singapore can go to as low as 22 degrees Celsius during the more cooling months.
Makes sense, and 22 degrees is still pretty high where I come from! But it's definitely a lot better than 30 degrees and higher

3:16 I'm surprised no one pointed out that this is a video of the London Underground and not the Singapore MRT. And yes, Singapore MRT is definitely air-conditioned - as you rightly mentioned, it is hot and humid in the country and it feels like almost everything is air-conditioned in Singapore where possible.
Edit: Ah, just realized someone did comment on this fact, I just didn't scroll down far enough in the comments.
That is correct, I didn't have any footage of the MRT so I used some subway stock footage just to show public transportation. And that's great that Singapore has air-conditioning everywhere, it is well needed!
It is useful to bring a spare T shirt to change and a small, wet towel in plastic bag to wipe when you are out.
Good advice! I just accepted that I would be hot and sweaty 😅

But regarding your negative of "people pick their noses in public in Singapore"... It makes it sound like it is very very common to see people do that. Almost like a national pastime. "Singaporeans are real foodies", for example.
I have seen people pick their nose in public maybe a total of 10... or let's say 20 times, in my life. And i lived in Singapore all my 58 years.
We do have uncouth people in Singapore, like any other country. In fact, one can even say there's a percentage of uncouthness in everyone.
If i go to parts of SF, or LA, or Texas... I will see more than a few people picking their noses on the streets. A LOT more. Would it then be fair for me to say "People urinate and defecate in public in America!"
Just because you were unlucky to observe maybe 5 people do that in 3 days, doesn't justify your statement. So, it's quite disappointing to see a content creator on travel, generalising a whole population on a few personal observations.
That's a fair criticism, I'm not trying to generalize a whole population, I was more so just speaking on my own experiences in Singapore (specifically the ones that were a bit shocking to me). And to be fair, if somebody made a video saying they were shocked by American people that were living on the streets and were urinating, defecating, and acting crazy, I would totally agree with them!

As you already mentioned that Singapore is a very humid country and sometimes dirt and dust builds up very fast. Thats where we breath in all of these but filters in our nostrils. When it builds up, it gets kinda itchy. Lolx....
But hey, thats human nature. Some kids after they pick their nose, they will just eat it. Dont be surprise.. :)

Singapore is a small island nation that comprises of many races and cultures. Predominantly, of the Chinese, Malay and Indian origin and others. Singapore being Singapore, it attracts not only tourists but workers and talents from around the world. We do have an extensive numbers of Chinese descent that are not born here and they do not necessarily come from China, they could be from Indonesia or Malaysia or even from Europe or America. Similarly, the Indians may not necessarily be a Singaporean Indian but an Indian from India, Malaysia or other parts of the world. For the Malays, most of them are tanned skin just like any South East Asian origin and Singapore is in the middle of S.E.A. And we do have lots workers from and around South East Asia as well.
I'm not defending the popular comments in here if the ‘act’ is not from a Singaporean or otherwise. All I'm saying is who knows?! Unless you really ask the ‘perpetrator’ for their ID.
As an example, if you go to Esplanade on the weekends, especially on Sunday, you may encounter a crowd of people around the area and it seems like a gathering of picnikers, I can assure you they are definitely not Singaporean and they are not tourists either. But outsiders may think…ahh this is what Singaporean do or go on the weekends.

The 6 points were great but point number 7 is a shocker to me haha! It probably happens but it is rare as far as Singapore culture goes. It could have been better if the producer asked around a bit. It sort of add a blemish to an otherwise beautiful video. But hey, no worries dude. 6/7 is a pretty good score card. If i may add, #7 would be the government - it is one of the least corrupt in the world.

When you said middle east, did you mean middle eastern culture or just islam? I didn't know there's middle eastern culture in Singapore
After reflecting, maybe it is more just Islamic culture than Middle Eastern - the neighborhood is nicknamed the "Arab Quarters", but I have never been to the Middle East so it's hard for me to say!
As a Singaporean, theres a lot of things we could learn from the West and vice versa. A nice balance is what we should aim for. And yes, SG is hot AF, not so much the temperature, but its the damn humanity.
Haha yeah the humidity is pretty unreal, but I still enjoyed it to be honest! And there are many things to learn from all cultures, that's what makes the world such an interesting place :)

You know all those petty laws and penalties we have? Fines for not flushing the toilet. Fines for littering/spitting/not returning your tray after eating at hawker centres?
If the authorities sees this video, there will soon be a law against picking noses in public!
Why? Because Singapore progressed from Third World to First in ONE generation! That means people who grew up with bucket toilets, spitting, littering, (unhygienic) street hawkers, and picking their noses (in the 1960s), found themselves (after just ONE generation - about 25 years) in the first world with flushing toilets, clean streets, sanitary hawker centres, and tourists who notice them picking their noses in public!
After this, we will crackdown on people sticking inhalers in their noses and walking around like it is a fashion accessory.
Those petty/silly laws were intended to drag the populi into the first world, and act like citizens of the first world.
But seriously, I like the honesty in this video, and your willingness to share the last shocker. As a Singaporean, I am amused, embarrassed, and also a little defensive (hence the above). But it is a fair observation. But I hope you take my "defence"/explanation of our unabashed practice in the spirit it was given - a (hopefully) objective explanation of a people thrown into modernity, but having grown up in poverty, adversity, and scarcity.
At least, we (most of us) don't spit openly in public anymore...? And we flush the toilet after use! (I hope!)

Duuuude... that nose-pickin' one though First time I've heard of this! Born and bred here since '64. Methinks you must've bumped into some elderly folk in Chinatown or foreigners, or maybe the ocassional uncouthed individual who are guilty of this LOL
Population of Singapore includes foreign workers etc. The actual numbers of local is only 2mil, approximately 1 genuine Singaporean in every 3.5 people you meet. We don’t dig our noses, the foreign workers from China does!
Interesting statistic, and I guess it's hard to say who picks their noses out in public - I didn't exactly check their passports after noticing them haha

I'm an SPR since 2006 and never seen the nose thing once.
There can sometimes be boorish behaviour but it's never Singaporeans (could be PRC's though).

I promise I don't assume everyone does it, but my wife noticed a few people do it over our 3 days in Singapore in several different areas with many locals such as hawker centers - just speaking on our own experiences!
Because it is humid, i guessed boggy gets formed up easily therefore i guessed it is an immediate response for that uncomfortness.

There are lot of things that shocked me in America.Rude people, homeless ,violence ,going into store and just take whatever they wanted and get away with it, and homeless shit on pavement 🙄🙄I take looking at nose picking over homeless shit on pavement 🙄🙄

Same here, Singapore blows American cities out of the water in terms of safety, cleanliness, public transportation, and many other things.
Please get your facts on your last observation. We are culture here in Singapore and that behaviour is highly committed by minimal workers hired from aboard. At least we don't carry guns or chew like cows constantly with chew gums as they do in the states!
I certainly don't have facts on the last observation besides our own experience, and yes Americans definitely have some negative traits too!

Malay,English,Chinese and Tamil are official and equal languages in S'pore.
Singapore national language is still malay... its just we use a common language call english

@jeny7177: Singapore has 4 official languages. We do learn some of them as mother tongues in school though. The National language is Malay and the working language is English.

I rarely see Singaporeans picking their nose although I often see foreigners picking their nose. At least 40% of the people out there are not Singaporean.
Interesting point, because Singapore is diverse it's hard for me to maybe tell who is a local and who is a foreigner
While there are 4 major religions in Singapore, there are actually more. During officer cadets' commissioning parades, there were always 7 priests from 7 religions to blessed the newly minted officers. I don't know whether there are more now.
On the affordability of Singapore, just think of how your media have misinformed you. It is not cheap, but prices are fair by our income level.
Yeah I don't mean to say it's "cheap", but I had the impression it was going to be one of the more expensive countries I've visited. For example, I've eaten meals at markets in South America that were similar prices to Hawker Centres in Singapore. Interesting to learn about the religious history from you!

Western free media have been misinforming the Western hemisphere about Singapore being the "most expensive" city/country. It is the most expensive because, westerners expect to still have ingredients not common in Asians' diet and the car. For basic items, Singapore is in fact it is cheaper than most, if not all, industrialised European countries and Japan too. In absolute terms, we are no doubt the most expensive country in Southeast Asia. But if you compare the after-tax salary-to-price ratio of goods, Singapore workers' purchasing power is higher than regional counterparts in their own countries.

Singapore is green and clean 🌴🌳🌿🌾🌱🪴 and hot spot for migratory birds from the far north during wintry months. Nose-picking is universal culture, your partner is simply trying to find bone in an egg. 4-day stay gives only superficial impressions and is grossly insuffucient for you to really get to know Singapore and Singaporeans.
Thanks for the comment, I agree that you can't dive incredibly deep into a place and its cultural in 4 days - these were only our impressions and experiences, and we definitely want to visit Singapore again to dive in deeper!

this is so true! I rmbr attending a Maroon 5 concert last year in Nov 2022 and there were westerners in front of me and another one to my left. They werent related but somehow they strike a convo. One asked the other “youre not going back home for christmas?” And the lady replied “NO!!! i’d rather stay in SG because of the heat than enduring the cold!!!” 😂😂 i was so shook by that convo hahahah
When I went to the US I was shocked by the poverty. Homeless people & drug addicts everywhere, dirty streets, dirty & unreliable public transports.. It really looks like a 3rd world country!
I don't blame you, it really is a massive problem here - American cities for the most part are all like this. I would rather visit Singapore any day of the week!

You just come here few days you know nothing. SINGAPORE is a lawful country. Not like a big country with no law they can steal and have daylight robbery and go supermarket without paying as long belong 800 dollars and still get away scot-free. You should do a video about this and share with us .
I might not be an expert on Singapore, but I'm not claiming to be one - I mostly came to learn about the country as a tourist firsthand through my experiences. I do love how crime in Singapore isn't prevalent like how it is in America, and the safety is one of my favorite things about it.
Watch out for those people, especially men who have very long finger nails on their pinky. They will dig nose and ears all day. It's mainly the ah beings and ah seng 😆😆😆
